The Remake Of George Romero's THE CRAZIES Now Has A Lead...

Timothy Olyphant, so promising in DEADWOOD and so devoid of gravity in everything else, has signed on to play the lead in a remake of George Romero's THE CRAZIES (a project previously covered HERE).
The story revolves around the inhabitants of a small Kansas town who are beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a secret biological weapon into the water supply. Olyphant is playing the town's sheriff.

What an unmitigated disaster that piece of shit was. Really, just one of the most painful film experiences of my life. I don't approve.

He was neither big as a house, nor impressive at all. In fact, all it did was stand there devoid of any expression and occasionally shit around. And yet Romewise was impressed, for some reason, though other buggits were not.

Racism, sexism, ageism, PCism, there is a lot problems in Hollywood, but the one that I think is the worst and the most under-reported is nepotism.
How does a director who shot only a couple TV episodes before making a 100+ million dollar bomb keep getting Hollywood films to make? Maybe, just maybe, it is do to the fact that Michael Eisner is his dad.

Swearengen that is. Olyphant's Bullock was ok, but he sure as shit wasn't the reason everybody watched the fuckin' show. Tell me about Ian McShane being in some upcoming movies and I might fuckin' care.

Saying Olyphant was lame in DIE HARD 4 is rather stating the obvious but what worries me far more in this story is the choice of director. SAHARA was ok for what it was (park your brain at the door entertainment) but it was also bland, slick, and forgettable - everything that the original CRAZIES wasn't. A movie like this demands the raw touch of a Romero, or at least an interesting spin (like the bible bashing zealot in THE MIST, which has a reasonably similar premise). If this director is going to successfully remake THE CRAZIES then he's going to have to get far crazier than his previous resume suggests he can.

I can even fuck up a 70 year old punchline with a typo...I thought Olyphant was good in Go, Hitman though....bad, bad choice.

I mean, he could have really sucked in that role. Pissed off computer hacker tries to bring down the government with his hacker cronies? Seriously, he could have gone down as the lamest villain ever. The fact that most DIE HARD fans didn’t walk out of the movie complaining about how low-rent the villain was compared to the other films… I think is a testament to how decent he was.
Furthermore, considering the role essentially consisted of him standing in front of a bank of computer monitors talking to McClane on a radio for most of the film... I think he did a more than acceptable job.
He was also great in DEADWOOD.
Yup, I think it's fair to say I give Olyphant a solid 7/10 on the SCALES OF TOLERANCE! -
The 'tache acted better than the person behind it. If you can't see how he paled in comparison to William Sanderson, Brad Dourif a al then YOU'RE the insane one. I mean, it's not like his role required a hell of a lot...just look angry and constipated all the time, and STILL he botched it. Think what Seth Bullock could have been with an actor of the same quality as his fellow cast members. The only reason why Olyphant got away with what he did was because the writers wrote specifically with his unique...talents in mind. Which is to say they didn't give him more than three lines at a time.

...Go. Not much else. Yeah, he always seemed a bit over his head in Deadwood but he did have to play the one straight man to a thousand scoundrels so I give him some credit. Also, he had some good scenes with Swearengen, like the one where they tangle and end up falling off the balcony.

But he isn't so god awful that he'll fuck up this production. At least he is serviceable. I mean, it isn't like we are casting Vincent Gallo or Christ Tucker or Eli Roth in the lead.
No, if this is going to suck it is because of the script or the director, or both. -

To the point where I don't remember who's actually in the movie until I watch the credits. That being said, I thought he was alright in Hitman.

...psych. jesus, i feel like I could come up with some stories about what a douche kevin smith is! though tim o. was totally overwhelmed by the level of talent on deadwood, he was PERFECTLY cast as a prick-ly do-gooder with anger issues. he also apparently does morning-zoo sports for some l.a. radio station -- usually, a job description of an asshole, but i've always enjoyed his sense of humor about his career, at least as conveyed in his interviews. so, ok -- i'm sure he'll be s(t)olid as the sheriff in the crazies remake. you know, the one who gets shot in the doorway as major ryder says "Jesus! Christ!". oh. whoops. spoiler alert....

if they maintain the deep social satire that made the first film so interesting. I actually think remaking this movie is a good idea. The original is a far from perfect ultra-low budget exploitation movie, yet it works on a certain level as a cynical comment on America's culture of violence. With a smart script set in the crazy ass violent world of today, it could be brilliant. Of course, we all know it'll probably be shit.

You can choose to interpret it however you like, but if you read what I wrote in context, "decent" and "more than acceptable" are indeed compliments.

The only thing that (barely) stops him from killing everyone is his conscience and sense of duty. Otherwise, he is batshit insane in that show. Supposed to show the paper thin line between law and lawlessness, I'm sure. Played his part very fucking well.
And don't compare him with Al because everyone knows THAT was the best role in the thing. Kudos to Ian McShane for creating a timeless classic with his performance. -
Not a lot of people seemed to remember Crazies when 28 Days Later came out. Obvious genesis for that film.

...Olyphant actually kept pace with McShane in Deadwood and projected his own aura of batshit badassery. It looked like any moment he would just snap and unload on anybody within firing distance.

I saw the original two years back and it's a very interesting film, but one of those movies that's actually HARMED by it's (very) low budget because the subject deserved something more epic
