Hey folks, Harry here... nearly 3 weeks out from BNAT 10. I think this has actually been the most stressful of all BNATs that I've ever put together. Reasons for that will make themselves evident later. Ahem.
But I've just gotten over the biggest hump in pulling off this AMAZING BUTT-NUMB-A-THON and my stress levels have returned to my normal Buddha levels. But I then realized - OH COOL! Now is the time to do the call out for the fabulous BUTT-NUMB-A-THON GOODIE BAGS!!!!
If you have a great cool product that you want to put in front of approximately 220 of the most gossipy, geeky, 24/7 talk to everyone that will listen internet saavy meta-geeks... Well this is where you pony up. In the past we've given away full game systems, full high def home entertainment systems, crazy caffienated beverages, bubble gum, toys, books, cds, movies, blu-ray, hd-dvd, foreign films, indie films, porn... all manners of coolosity. We've had tiny little fezs for everyone to wear. We've had so many cool items - it's really amazing. SO... How does your amazing company become part of BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 10. The TENTH EDITION of this most exclusive and mysterious event in human history?
Simple - Drop me an email here telling me what you propose to give out: HK at AintItCool.Com - the turn around on this is pretty quick as every item needs to be shipped and accounted for, meaning it has to be at THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE on SOUTH LAMAR by no later than December 11th, 2008. Because on December 12th - the annual BAGGING DAY tradition gets underway.

The main reason for this quick note is to make sure that everyone gets their tickets in advance. We have posted them for sal on the Alamo Drafthouse webstie here:

If you are not on Harry's personal guest list or the Alamo guest list, you will need to purchase a ticket for BNAT. BNAT and all the trimmings is funded almost exclusively through ticket revenue, so please do your part. Also, please help us out by purchasing the tickets in advance. If you wait to pay at the door, it's a hassle for the staff, may delay the start of the event AND you run the risk of getting assigned really crappy seats.
One last thing, please make sure that you are a confirmed attendee before purchasing a ticket. The attendees are listed on AICN here:

I know its going to be cool, but different BNAT's are not always as predictably geeky as some might think. Im sure a lot of people are already expecting an early screening of Watchmen, after Snyder screened 300, but there is no guarantee. Now it would be quite a coup if Harry got Star Trek, you know it should be in somewhat a workable capacity, but who knows. Maybe a Where The Wild Things are promo? Gotta have some sort of foreign film screening, but since I suck at keeping up with the foreign films coming out, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe Harry Potter? Could they do that? I know some version of it screened already, who knows. Then there is the impossibly cool, impossible to predict list of flicks that cover the gamut of cool, to weird, to just plain disturbing, older stuff and classic prints that no one could foresee. One day I will try and make it to this film meca, but a wife, a job, and a new kid make that tough. We shall see, have fun all those who are going!

i agree with the idea about Where the Wild Things are...maybe spike will showcase "his" cut. is it a coincidence the site gets an interview around the same time Harry is putting together the lineup? probably. But if BNAT gets to see Spike's original cut i will slit my wrists. thats a promise.

As a veteran BNAT attendee, I can dispell a couple of guesses and agree with a couple of others. I'd say "Watchmen" is an almost certainty due to Harry's relationship with Zack Snyder and the fact that you can't really spoil the story: the graphic novel has been around forever. "Star Trek" is whole other matter. There's no way they're going to let us spoil the entire story all over the internet 9 months early; plus Harry wouldn't have flown to NY to see 25 minutes if he knew he would see the entire film in a few weeks. I'd say "Valykrie" is a near certainty due to site hype and advance trailers shown at Fantastic Fest. That means Tom may show up in person for a Q & A. "Fanboys" showed at Fantastic Fest, so no. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons" and "Gran Turino" are strong possibilites. The wildcard I expect to see is Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" which is totally possible; it's finished and ready to show and Harry is good buddies with Jackson. "Firday the 13th" or "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" would make good midnight premieres, but I'm not sure about those. I would bet good money that footage from James Cameron's "Avatar" will make its debut at BNAT (which makes me think a 3-D feature film could follow). "The Spirit"? It's possible, but hasn't gotten much site hype. The one I was hoping for was "The Wolfman," but recent stories about a problem plagued set and an unhappy cast and crew have kind of deflated the general excitement. Anyone else want to guess?

There's always a musical. This year it'll likely be a vintage one. There's always something pseudo-pornographic, so bring some blindfolds and earplugs for the kiddies. There'll be at least one black-and-white classic. There'll be a "Torture" film at about 4 in the morning, and I don't mean like "Hostel". I mean like something REALLY bad and psychotronic that will test everyone's will to live. Subtitled, long and slow paced lesbian vampire films are fun at this sleep-deprived time, or midget porn with Garry Oldman. There will be at least a couple of foreign films. What else? If you've been before, help me out here--

Sorry, Harry. But I had to. I don't think TREK or WATCHMEN stand a chance, but MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D and a vintage 3-D flick are guarantees. BENJAMIN BUTTONS is also pretty much a given, and expect some exclusive footage/and or teaser for THE HOBBIT.

All I know is what I've heard from a couple of sources that shall go unnamed that were involved in the production that one of the producers (and to their credit they didn't name which one) was such a monsterous and monumental asshole that he basically made everyone within his grasp in the cast and on the crew miserable to the extent that they just wanted to get the film overwith and go home. This apparently wasn't where things started in preproduction when everone was very excited about the project. Now, this doesn't mean the finished film will be bad. I'm hoping it will be great, and I can't wait to buy a Wolfman replica cane. I'm also not part of the film industry or in any way part of the film, so feel free to just take what I said as heresay. All i know is that some of the journalists sent to report on the film came back less excited after talking with people on the set.

Snyder promised that he would be bringing "Watchmen" in 2008 when he premiered 300 there, and Abrams promised he'd show STAR TREK this year when CLOVERFIELD wasn't done in time for 2007.
Of course, that was before TREK got pushed back to be a summer release, but they could still want to use BNAT to build buzz. They have an event with a nine-year piracy-free history, and a crowd that can keep secrets (how long did we hold up the SALOME I-III ruse?). If we get neither, I'm sure it will still be awesome. -

I would say Watchmen is gonna happen, just because as stated above it can't be ruined, which is also the reason I could see Harry Potter showing up.
All that being said I don't think Star Trek will be there. As for building buzz? This site does not have the ability to make or break a film with a budget. A no-budget indie it could def. help, but nothing that cost more than $3-4 million to make. Just look at Grindhouse (or any of a bunch of other examples) that had so many articles about the films that if the site had the ability to make a film it would have.
Plus I think the Star Trek movie is going to be a mistake. Not necessarily that they are making one, but they are making one that costs so much. There is an effort to cross over to a much larger audience which alienates the hard-core fans (by ignoring or outright changing established continuity). Star Trek is huge to the fans, meh to most. I would be shocked if Star Trek makes 200 million domestic, and would guess somewhere in the 130 range. -
With it being BNAT "X", I'm guessing that piece of shit "X" Man movie WOLVERINE will screen with Hugh "I'm here while Australia tanks in America" Jackman IN PERSON. Just a guess.

FilmFan311 has some good points there. Still, there's been very little buzz about it on the site and the general feelings about X-MEN 3 from Harry and others at AICN is pretty poor. With "Star Trek," 433 is right, Snyder DID INDEED promise to bring it to BNAT, but that was when is was going to open two weeks later. There are always wildcard BNAT attendees that nobody knows, and it's hardly plausible to keep a plot secret that long. There are likely even magazines that would PAY for spoilers like that. So many films got pushed to Summer 2009 because the writers stike nearly killed the films geared for that season. HARRY POTTER is another one of those films, but I don't see that as a BNAT film. "Coraline," however, is a possibility. I do know that Harry is really under a lot of stress this year getting it all together and he promises this will be the BNAT to end all BNATs. In fact, the biggest problem this year seems like WHAT NOT to include, as so many films want a presence at the Alamo. I've been told that we could have filled the entire 24 hours with exclusive footage and presentations from stuff nobody has ever seen yet, but that's not what BNAT is about. It's about the love of film.

This is off-topic, but I just spoke with one of my best friends, Gordon Jones (AKA Flesh Gordon on the site), and he had his 40th birthday party at the Alamo Wednesday night. They wanted to show his favorite movie, "Raiders of the Lost Ark," so Harry called the offices at Paramount. Steven Speilberg ended up sending his own personal print of the film to show along with Indina Jones dvd boxed sets and hardback books for EVERYONE at the party. How cool is that? I want to send out a big thanks to Steven Speilberg for his generous help; he couldn't have done it for a better human being. And Happy 40th to Gordon!

Ouch. I suppose that you want to tickle the asses of 220 hand-selected "friends." G'job! It just seems that there used to be a time when AICN didn't cater to studio big wigs (directors, producers, actors, etc...)...or even the readers themselves. Now, Harry is out begging for free gift "donations" to be placed in "gift" bags of people -- for what reason? I suppose that Harry will promise to write up some good reviews of those products? Remember HD-DVD (*cough cough*). I really wish that you would get back to your roots, Harry. You've gone from being a very sloppy but ultra-cool independent film/TV blog......to a very sloppy, low quality "credible" review site. I think I preferred the good ol' days when you weren't afraid to say what you thought. :-(

Gordon is busy right now putting the final touches on the top secret BNAT X poster. You're right of course, Mr. Goddman, but I doubt Mr. Spielberg will use his influence on an artist like Mr. Jones. Instead, all of those Indiana Jones boxed sets likely included satellite tracking devices so Speilberg will know exactly where every AICN member lives. Right now destructive lasers from outer space satellites are pointed directly at each house, so I expect the reviews of his next film will be pretty good.

I don't see the gift bags as "catering" to anyone. Most of the stuff that I got in mine a few years back was hardly anything that was BIG BRAND NAME HERE or DON'T FORGET THIS WHEN IT COMES OUT, etc. It was all extremely fun (and funny) off-kilter things that remind me everytime I see them of what the whole experience was. Of course there was the uber-cool Starscream Transformer figure that I got, but after how many years, was I not going to see Transformers anyways?The site is very credible, always interesting, and despite what you think about the HD-DVD thing, I don't feel like anything has ever been pushed on us. It's just been about the greatest things we can all geek out about, and if red is the color of your geek flag, fly that fucker.

I think it's a full house this year, and I doubt there'll be much opening up. I'll be there, but I may not get in either. I didn't think I was going to be able to afford to go this year, so I was late with my application. I have heard that there is a possibility of more people getting to see the second half of the show. See, this is the first year it's happening at the Alamo South Lamar, a functioning multi-screen theater that will be showing movies all day Saturday. I've heard whispers that they may start reeling the films into a second theater at midnight after regular screenings have stopped for the day allowing as many as 250 more people to come in then and see the rest of the show. Now, I haven't spoken to Tim League or any of the good folks at the Alamo, so I don't if this is feasible or will really happen, but it's something to think about.

Actually I wasn't talking about cancellations standby list, which would probably be done on the day of BNAT & if I don't get an email I will be trying that, I meant the standby list for Austin people that Harry mentioned in the original post saying who got in this year. He said "Now - if you don't see your name below - and you submitted from the Austin Area - take hope. The theater audience capacity is still being determined - along with the various "Guests and Film Professionals" that are bringing films - sometime over the next month - the standby folks will be chosen from the Austin Submissions - sometime prior to locking the Yearbook... so you may be included in there. You will be notified via email - along with a site announcement. "
Now maybe there were a ton of "Guests and Film Professionals" who got all the spots and there won't be a Austin standby list, but I am going to keep clinging to the hope of getting an email. I figure that the yearbooks must be going to print soon so I guess I will go back to crossing my fingers and hoping to get an email. I have had a crap year and so has my partner and BNAT is the one thing that could turn this year around. -
At least we're together in this. Here in Louisville the unemployment rate is above the national average and the local government is canceling funding for everything due to a $20 million deficit. The arts got the shaft. Concert promoters have written our city off. Major parks are closing. Even public libraries are closing on the weekends. I've been unemployed for nearly 8 months and my unemployment just ran out. I've been doing part time stuff and trying to make my own business oportunities, but no one wants to hire or spend money right now. McDonalds or WalMart might be my only choice pretty soon. I may have to move soon, but as bad as it is, I have family here who depend on me and don't want me to leave. It was almost depressing reading Quint's Holiday Guide this year (a series I usually enjoy) because most of us can't think about cool geek gifts or Blu-ray players this year. I'm right there with both of you; I hope you get in and I hope this next year is better for you.

I was just regetting my whinning. I've been trying to keep my chin up, as I believe looking and acting successful generally leads to success while whinning usually leads to nothing. I've been struggling to keep postive this month and a couple of times I've lost that battle. But I'll be back and better than ever. The only real failure is giving up.
