Doomsday has to be the dullest supervillain this side of Darth Maul. All he does is hit stuff. I bet Lex and Brainiac and Mxyzptlk all made the masturbation gesture when they heard Doomsday got to kill Superman.
Still, dude’s got a following, I guess, and tonight he brings his rocky fists to tonight’s “Smallville,” the last new one, I gather, we’ll see for a while. A preview:
The next new “Smallville” after tonight will give us our first live-action look at The Legion of Superheroes. Let’s hope their uniforms look a little less Xanadu than those of the “Smallville” version of the Justice League.

I've never been a fan of Smallville post season4. Season 5, 6, and 7 were almost painful to watch. Especially the episode where Jimmy Olsen became a wackass Secret Agent? Lame. But its a guilty pleasure of mine, and I make sure to catch the episodes I can. I mean, its Superman! With that being said, I must say that this season has made major improvements. The actress playing Tess, Lex's female limosouine driver and closest confidant in the Superman/Justice League cartoons, is a really good. She brings some fierce acting to the table. She's a good replacement for Lex. This season has been better than most, with some awkward episodes. The chick that played Maxima was HORRIBLE. You can't just pick out some random anorexic redheaded (probably dyed) model, throw a fashionable spacesuit on her and call her Maxima Intergalactic Warrior. Lame. But yea, I'm really looking forward to seeing the Legion of Superheroes and how the whole Doomsday (still way too early though) plays out. Its def. gotten better.

I've been recording alot of stuff on my tv recorder thingee over the last few months....and when you see different shows more frequently than once-a-week, and start comparing the shows you watch with each other...you begin to know which shows are compelling (in that you want to see again) and which are just becoming poor....Supernatural - good show; Heroes - becoming very irritating; Dexter - suberb; Fringe - I'm sorry but what was the fuss about? Its a very poor show; but Smallville (for all its cheesiness) isn't a bad show...it is entertaining...and I want to watch the next episodes...even though sometimes they get things wrong (supes with no cape, Chloe being super-hacker)...the fact it has lasted so long is testament to its quality (because if the show was pants (sucked), it would be off the air)...and all these guys who say "Is smallville still on?" are obviously in the minority cos Yes, it is still on and has been for the last 8 years...while Pushing Daisies and Terminator, and Heroes are all near execution....and Journeyman, Six feet Under, and teen-fare Mutant X and OC have died...fact is...it is a solid show...it won't win 'The Wire' like praise...it won't get Emmys..but it has endured and that is due to its story writers and cast and crew...you can't mock a show like this...it's earned some respect...Shows that do not produce results are killed quickly (Bionic woman)...shows that do - are kept going...Smallville must be doing something right...

somehow, by removing Lex, the show has improved. This season has been amazing. Give it a chance, watch the old episodes that have aired this season. And Darth Maul was the only good thing about episode 4 you fucking twit.

Is entertaining shit, but full of hits and misses. Last weeks ep was great, the week before was shite.. and this seems to be the pattern. I think there has probably been a maximum run of about 4 good episodes before a shit one showed up. But this season has been better without the painful Lana story. That shit really dragged it down. I used to think she was really hot when I started watching. By the time she left, I couldn't stand the sight of the bitch.

but ended up catching an ep a few weeks ago and got back into it. It actually HAS gotten better. Dropping Lana and starting to write plots that are not entirely retarded and remotely resemble Superman have done wonders for the show. This season should have happened around 4 years ago. Still not sold on Doomsday, but hey at least they are doing a halfway decent job of it and are writing out alot of the fuckups the previous writers did and putting it back on track as something remembling Superman.

the show need to change the name now that the focus is on Metropolis...Thankfully they got rid of Rosenbaum and Kreuk-Did we REALLY need Lex around all the time? And having Clark moon over Lana Lang was incredibly dull and pointless- not to mention WHO would pass on Cloe for her?!?!?!?

I think even in the comics they've given his some intelligence and emotion (which Superman uses to outsmart him). So in fairness, making this Doomsday a Hyde-type with a more solid Krypton backstory isn't too bad for Smallville. The Chloe-memory thing will almost certainly be temporary. And the Tess sitch has been a major misfire. She's as evil as Lex but with no motivation for being evil. She'll kill a man with a poison flower one week, and tell Clark (apparently sincerely) she wants him to trust her the next for her altruistic reasons. She smiles and takes Oliver's gift dress one week, and kicks him out of the bed the next. She's got no motivation: whatever else they mangled with Lex on the show in the later part of the run (like falling in love with Perfect Lana (tm)), you had the father/son backstory angst and the attempts to do good. Tess, she's just convenient continuing-villain with occasional temporary personality changes if they need her to be a bit good to fill in a plot point.

I was watching the Superman Animated clip and WB should of abandoned the animation style after Batman. Ecspecially because they are trying to skew older. Why is it we get much better animation in video game cut scenes than we do in Animated Movies. I know it has something to do with the straight to video budgets.

...but not for this show. I don't know if it will be the last season, but to my surprise, it is working. Lois (actress and character) kicks Lana's Street Fighter ass. The Davis/Doomsday character is doing great with the whole Jekyl/Hyde thing. Chloe is awesome. Jimmy is Jimmy. And Tom Welling, although he may not have much of a career after this, does a great job all the way. I thought Lex was great, but so far this season has been much better than I thought it would be. I can't wait for tonight and the future Legion episodes.

Maybe I got spoiled by Smallville, since it actually spent time with Clark Kent. The Spiderman movies that were about Peter Parker worked. Iron Man about Tony Stark. Superman Returns was about Superman, and Lois Lane. Clark Kent was treated like a clown in that movie, which is why it was an incomplete success. Buffoonish Clark in Supes 1, 2, was an outgrowth of Clark's struggle to do the right thing and keept those near to him safe. Smallville successfully reveals Clark to be motivated by Love, Truth, Justice and the American Way.
All that said, I cut the show out of the rotation last season. But I remember it fondly, from once upon a time. -
I too will watch the occasional episode of Smallville. The new cast and setting is working, albeit somewhat contrived. I hope they end the show properly with a big budget two hour finale, even if it has a few more seasons left in it. Also, put Clark in glasses already.

This is what's going to happen. Davis turns into Doomsday, Clark shows up and gets the ever lovin' shit kicked out of him. Doomsday continues his rampage, until Chloe confronts him. And we get awesome dialog that will go something like this. Chloe: Davis I know you're in there, please stop (Boo-Hoo). Doomsday: No worry, Hulk no hurt Betty. Doomsday turns back into Davis and everyone agrees that he's to dangerous to bet set free. So he either kills himself or gets sent to the Phantom Zone. Ta-Dah the end.

They still are in High School? What is it, a special needs school? All kidding aside, I always thought they should have done 4 years of "Smallville" and then have Clark go to college and call it "Metropolis". You would have moved beyond the entire Superboy problem, you could have had an entirely new cast of characters, and you could of had him meet Lori Lemaris.

Over the past 7 years it's been more than obvious that Herc hates Smallville even though it has had Whedonverse alumni involved. That's usually the trump card for him loving something. But not Smallville, I don't get it. The show barely gets any coverage on this site and when it does Herc just trashes it so why does he even bother. If you don't like the show that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion but for a long running genre show about the world's greatest hero to barely get mentions on a site that celebrates nerdiness and geekdom kind of blows my mind. Not to mention that neither Supernatural or Reaper get any kind of coverage at all. Why is it the coaxial tv column just a column for things one guy likes and not the community of people that visit this site? If Joss sneezes or switches shampoo there is an instant posting. It would be nice to see a little more objective coverage in this column and not just a blitz of information when a season of the Gilmore Girls goes on sale.

I never saw the first season when it aired, caught it on DVD and started watching part way into Season 2. But as someone who - right, wrong, indifferent but certainly inexplicably a lot of times - has watched the show continuously since then, I can't help but be excited by this new season.
After a weak season 4 (which was extremely disappointing after what is still the show's best season finale in season 3), they bounced back a little in season 5 only to begin to lose it in season 6 and fall off the rails in season 7. It's not that the show hasn't had good ideas (amongst bad ones, admittedly) throughout. It's that the writing has often not supported those ideas well. Season 7 was the prime example of that.
I wasn't looking that forward to season 8 but I couldn't deny that there was an excitement about it coming into the proceedings that hadn't been around in years. AlMiles were finally jettisoned and they kicked the two biggest crutches of the show out from under them: Lex and Lana.
The loss of Rosenbaum was inconceivable. Oh, it was high time for Lex to be out of the picture in order to push Clark's destiny forward, but Rosenbaum consistently brought so much to the table (as did his on-screen father John Glover) that you couldn't help but think that this would irreparably wound the show. Clark's counterpoint was gone, as was someone who always upped the game of the other acting playing opposite him in a scene.
With Lana, conversely, Kristin Kreuk was saddled with perhaps one of the worst written characters in the history of television. I feel bad for her - aside from the experience she got to garner as an actress - because she never had a consistent character to play and her character was a significant detriment to the entire proceedings. The fact that AlMiles had such a hard-on for Lana and threw her onto the highest of high pillars never let the character be real and someone you could identify with or rally behind. She was the worst in damsels-in-distress and when they finally started to give her meatier things to do the Dark Lana direction rang so hollow. I don't blame Kreuk; I blame the writing.
But Lex and Lana being gone is exactly what this show needed. It forced them to stop relying on old tropes, recycling confrontations and conversations over and over again. And with AlMiles gone, the writers have felt unleashed to finally carry on the altered premise of the show that was introduced in Season 4: Clark accepting and embracing his destiny.
Now, season 8 didn't start out perfectly. The writing felt like kids in a candy store. Again, the ideas were solid but the writing felt way too schlocky comic booky. I was very ready to throw in the towel and move on. And then, almost immediately, it changed. The show is far removed from the setting of the first few seasons, which would only be natural after so many years. It finally feels as if it is maturing and advancing.
I thought the Doomsday arc was one of the dumbest ideas when it was announced, and yet with Sam Witwer in the role and the deft writing the show has made it work and makes you care about the character. With the episode 'Identity' a few weeks ago, we were finally introduced to Superman in the Smallville universe. Not necessarily Clark in the tights but the public was given a teaser and Clark (finally!) saw himself as a symbol of hope for the masses. The people now know a man in blue and red is out there helping and protecting.
Now, I'd hardly ever call Smallville a bastion of excellent television writing. But if you gave up on the show long ago, give it another look. I think you'll be surprised by this season. -

the show used to bother me with all of its "superman" hints that went no where, but this year it feels like its all adding up, like there actual momentum to change as opposed to the usual format of freak of the week, person who doesn't know clark's secret get knocked out unconscience, clark saves the day, followed by a scene involving clark moping int he farm house about being differentnow if they would just turn him into superman already, give us a season 9 that actually has him as superman, hell even have him leave at the end of this year, advance season 9 5-6 years down the road and have clark come back as superman..the time leap might help people of metrolopis not rmembering clark without glassesjust a thought, then again what do i know?

The problem is, Smallville has usually comes to some sort of conclusion at the end of every episode. (Minus the season ending cliff hangers and 2 parters). I really think they should leave characters in peril at the end of every episode and make it one flowing story.

...and to MonkeyManReturns, Six Feet Under didn't "die" as Ball decided to stop the show letting it end, by choice, at 5 seasons. And that last episode still remains the single greatest thing I have ever seen on 'television'.As for Smallville, Playhouse pretty much captured my take...used to be I wouldn't miss the show and we'd all hook up and watch on my brother's system (my cable doesn't issue WB in hi-def, those assholes!) but now I'll actually forget sometimes to watch which doesn't mean I hate it but does mean it's not such a huge priority any longer.This is the last season though so for the haters, you'll get your wish come the end of Spring.

Frodo: Get Netflix and watch all the Smallville you can handle. It's cheaper than buying the DVDs and you can watch them at your own pace. Hell, you can even stream stuff via your XBox or your TiVo now.
Continentalop: No, they're not in high school anymore and haven't been for a while. However, they never went to college either. Chlow and Clark just seemed to get jobs as reporters at The Daily Planet with no credentials whatsoever.
Darth Nader: I wondered the same thing about the mind wipe. Does she remember being Oracle-esque? Does she know who Green Arrow is? The rest of the League? I'd think maybe all of that is gone as fruit of the poison tree, but maybe they'll clear it up for us tonight since Oliver appears to be around. -
Yeah, she's back tonight and for four more episodes after that, but then that's it so the series should end much stronger. And thank Rao that Doomsday looks like an actual monster instead having Sam Witwer with NEXT GEN makeup shit stuck on his face.

in the same way Venom initially worked before marvel started whoring him, as well as many other relentless killing machine villains that have graced many a franchise. The reason it works, is because for once, you get to see the hero really get put through the ringer. Get his ass kicked, so hard that he *runs* for the first time ever. And the villains relentless, mindless pursuit of the hero stirs up feelings like the original Halloween. It's a unique type of fear, the mysterious entity that seems unstoppable and never stops pursuing you no matter what you do to it. Smart scheming villains are great, but the juggernaut killing machine can be pretty entralling if done correctly. And by done correctly, I mean quality suffering for the protagonist.

They've got him fighting all of Superman's enemies before he becomes Superman! Even the ones that don't show up until well after he puts on the big blue suit. They're throwing out all of the character's continuity. It's like a Superman Elseworld. "What if Clark Kent runs into everyone before he puts on the super suit?" Answer: Superman is flying around the world in his new suit with nothing to do in the last episode. And he gets bored. Me too.

Eh, at least they (maybe) got the look right. Sure, it doesn't exactly mesh all that well for CGI characters, but all CG characters on TV has always been a tad dodgy. You'd figure by 2008 it'd look at least better when Voyager did it with Species 8417

I'm still a few weeks behind on my Smallville viewing, but I've been watching every SOA as it airs. Freakin' incredible show with amazingly nuanced characters. And what a jaw dropper last night. As soon as I realized what they were doing, I was practically yelling, no! at the screen. Wow. Can't wait for the coming beatdown. Anyone else think the guy playing Jax could step in for Ledger as the Joker?

I thought dropping Lex would be the deathblow to the show, but replacing him with that hot piece of trim and now an authentic version of Doomsday really kicks all kinds of ass. Have to give Smallville its props. Fantastic season thus far.

Yes this show has obviously become an Elseworlds. At least since about Season 5. JLU members shouldn't be forming their groups with their aliases this early. And villains like Brainiac (which has met with young Clark in some tellings) has had way too much contact this early to ever fit in with the larger general Supes mythology/continuity. And Clark should definitely not be at the Daily Planet before Perry White and definitely shouldn't but there this long before donning the suit. Although I don't really think the term Elseworld applies. This is probably Earth 33.1 or something. J/k or maybe not.

WB could just using it as a testing ground for what might work on the big screen. Personally I got sick of Smallville when they introduced Lois as a one trick pony, having an obligatory bikini scene every frigging episode is not building character. As well as simply trying to cram as much mythology into a show which could have built it's own far more easily and interestingly. Meeting superheroes before they become superheroes is very cool. Watching them become superheroes before the big S is lame. Introducing them as long term characters also gets rid of any novelty value and for the want of another word devalues what Superman represents to characters like this ie the first superhero.

Just another example of what an epic fail Superman Returns was. I don't even watch Smallville but I'll check this out tonight just to see Doomsday not because I think he's an awesome villain, but because it's nice to see somebody pit a real monster of a villain against Superman in live action again.

I thought it made Doomsday look more impressive by just showing glimpses in shadows instead of full-on, brightly-lit shots. Besides, this obviously wasn't the big showdown between Clark and Doomsday, so it was better to tease the audience a little.
And yes, waiting until January for new episodes sucks, but at least we get the Legion of Super-Heroes as the first new episode of 2009. Fingers crossed for the Time Trapper as the villain!

I didn't realise Clark met and fought every villain before he even became Superman. Why didn't the writers just move onto "Metropolis" as has been suggested for years now? The show has become a joke. How many times can they work Kryptonite into a story baffles me.

The overabundance of comedy episodes broke the flow of the mythology, and now that they've gotten back on track with the main storyline, other problems arise. This new chick that took over as Ruby (Genevieve Cortese)fucking sucks. She can't act, and the role has been butchered. She's no longer the strong character that Katie Cassidy portrayed. And not really hinting at Sam going evil after setting it up, is beyond disappointing. This far in, and after Dean has been rescued from hell....THEY SHOULD NOT BE HAVING "DUDE" CONVERSATIONS TO THE EXTENT THEY ARE.

However, if he goes evil, what good does it do being at his house? Wouldn't it be better to give his Kryptonite stash to Oliver and J'onn J'onzz? That way, if need be, it's in the hands of someone who knows what to do with it. Instead it is always underfoot where Clark can, every second week, find himself on the brink of death when he knocks it off a bookshelf or it falls out of a drawer.

On this show, absolutely. Every time you turn around there's Clark vomiting in his mouth if he's even five feet away from a pebble of the goddamm stuff--and everyone's got some, just like a pet rock. Much like the Kryptonite Freak of the Week, every time you think they've moved past a certain crutch, there it is again. Therefore, more beer.

Manhunter probably has ways to get Clark undercontrol on hand, and I'm sure Queen has his own stock of kryptonite as well. That specific rock though was intended for his parents, Pete, Chloe, basically anyone (mortals) that knew his secret.

When you write an episode of hourlong dramatic TV, we'll talk. 22 episodes is fucking hard enough. And look at Season 4 of Lost. Their best season yet and the episode count was dramatically cut. How about Mad Men? Less episodes = better quality.

Here you can enjoy my Personal Smallville Trivia Top Ten.
1. A friend was over-exuberant when the show premiered and subsequently turned me off from it before I had ever seen an episode. The best example of this phenomenon is the night he called me and said only, "Tonight. Johnny Pneumonic. 12:30. Let’s go." And I still haven't seen that movie.
2. Okay, so I finally caught an episode of Smallville during Season One. Ironically, in retrospect, it was one of the worst episodes of the series. I thought, "I was right. There's no way I'm watching this cheese fest."
3. Then, I saw a preview for the Christopher Reeve episode in Season Two. I had to watch that to pay my respects to the man. I saw a show far removed from the other episode I'd seen. This one even used snippets of John Williams's music. I was a fan from that point forward.
4. I bought the Smallville Talon Mix soundtrack. This helped me to learn some new, hip songs and years later surprise myself by singing along with my younger, hip friends when they played "Island in the Sun.” I played the CD for my toddler, and she loved it. "Everything" was my favorite song for a while.
5. In 2004, the year I reconnected with my brother, we watched Smallville together. He came in on me watching an episode, so I hesitantly put in the first disk to start him from the beginning. He loved the good and bad of it -- the relationship between Clark and Lex and the metaphors for how we define power was especially exciting. Encouraging Jonathan to hug his son was excruciating. The nurse telling Jonathan that he and his wife had lost their baby and then promptly walking off screen... priceless. And the best line of the series? "Lex! I thought you were dead!" Big smiles.
6. The first time an audience full of people saw me in my underwear, I was my Superman boxers. A friend saw my member peaking out of my fly. That was embarrassing.
7. Thanksgiving, 2004 - My brother and I were going to watch some Smallville, and he called a girl to come over. We watched the show until we were getting slap happy tired, and I picked her up and carried her to bed. She became my girlfriend. Our four-year anniversary is this week.
8. In September, 2006, both of our cars were out of commission. Smallville Season Five came out on DVD, but we had no wheels. So, we walked to the store. We walked four miles, through some rain, and under the toll road, to buy fucking Smallville Season Five. In a stroke of madness, we also purchased bikes so we could ride home.
9. Tom Welling's birthday is April 26th, the same as my brothers. One year for my birthday, he hand crafted a metal shield with an S in it and put it on a necklace. It's hanging above me now.

I had a geekgasm watching this episode, "Prey." The beginning moments were the quiet fruition of seven seasons of solid character development.
A few stinker episodes and story arcs aside, this series has been built on a foundation of character, especially in the parallel evolution of Clark, Lex, and Chloe. Now that Lex, Lionel, the Kents, and Lana are gone, we see Clark more isolated and establishing himself as an adult. More and more, through costume choices, dialog, and Tom Welling's presence and delivery, he has become Superman. All he needs are the suit and the power of flight, which the series will end with. He's really come into his own with the character. It's been a wonderfully slow and logical progression that simply can't be accomplished in any other media like it can in long-run serial television. There isn't a cheesy "moment" or "event" when he decides to become Superman. It's been built up with great skill and purpose from Season One through everything that has happened to him. His relationships, his decisions, and his mistakes have shaped him to be the hero we're expecting. I applaud the show.
These accolades come from watching Clark in the beginning of “Prey.” He's listening to the police scanner and responding to calls. We get an amazing downward aerial shot of the streets of Metropolis as his red and blue streak travels about the city. We're treated to a couple of Richard-Donner-Superman "first night" moments, when Clark is rescuing people not because they're tied to this episode's plot line, but because he's a hero and they need rescuing. I was giddy. Without fanfare or advertising, Smallville has introduced Superman in a very real way.
Chloe and Clark's relationship continues to sparkle. Allison Mack is a treasure, and I frankly can't wait to see where her career goes once she's free of the show. She brings so much depth and subtlety to her scenes that she often covers the writers' butts. She can make the cheesiest moments feel genuine.
My favorite dialog was between Clark and John Jones regarding keeping his identity secret. I'm very curious to see how the writers are going to handle the transition from anonymous hero to globally-known Superman without anyone realizing that it's Clark, especially now that he's established in Metropolis and *gasp!* without his glasses.
Of course, we all just sort of accept it in every other incarnation, so in a way we can't apply logic only to Smallville. Still, I have a feeling that they have something clever and deeply character-based up their sleeves, or at least some kind of gimmick we weren't expecting.
Other shows have come and gone, some with better writing or more relevance, but you've hung in there, Smallville. Here's hoping you end with dignity. My dream is this season ending the series, with the final shot being Clark opening his shirt to reveal the S for the first time, and maybe him taking off. Okay, maybe even Tom Welling's turn to fly above the planet and smile at the camera. *happy sigh*

They have to have "dude" conversations. It's their characters. I agree that they've had a few too many "just for laughs" episodes, but I'd rather they do too many of those as opposed to too many season-mythology eps or too many "serious" eps. Interesting issue considering the X-Files connections that the show has. Some X-Files fans wanted nothing but the alien mythology story. Others preferred non-mythology one-shots. Also interesting considering the Angel connections. The bulk of this season's lighter-hearted episodes seem to have been influenced by producer Ben Edlund, known for producing Angel and creating The Tick.

...but it's displaying more of a second creative wind in its EIGHTH season than Heroes has managed less than halfway through its third. Seriously, the show has been damn good this year. I thought the loss of Rosenbaum's Lex and Glover's Lionel would cripple the show, but it's been displaying more forward momentum towards Clark's destiny in these past two months than the last two seasons combined. The testy Clark/Lois attraction has been handled nicely, although the reappearance of Lana will no doubt toss some cold water on that (gotta admit, though..Kreuk with that short, shaggy hairdo was pretty smokin'). I've never read about Doomsday in the comics, but his brief appearance here was pretty well-handled by TV-budget standards, and Sam Witwer's performance all season long has been outstanding. Honestly, there are a lot worse shows to be bitching about. Smallville still delivers the goods.

I usually prefer the comedic standalone eps, but with what they set up with the season opener, the overabundance of those episodes, as well as how their handling the characters has really killed any sense of urgency. The writing just isn't up to par with season three.

this is for the comic nerds...so doomsday adapts and evolves to any threat at incredible speeds. thats his basic power ... he evolves. So make a superman story when there is a big complicated murder mystery.. and then reveal the mastermind behind to be doomsday.. he evolved past basic strength, and in a few short years evolved to also superior intelligence. he would better superman in every way. (it would be fun to figure out where to go from there. i have a few ideas.)

They actually made Doomsday interesting. Seriously, Smallville is a show I watch religiously, hating myself all the way through until the action climax where some kind of cool Superman or Green Arrow thing happens and I forgive the usually bad acting and teeniness and just smile. But Sam Witwer is a great actor, and they took Doomsday and gave him an interesting backstory that actually made him more thematically significant than just a big thing that likes to hurt things.
All of Superman's enemies are in some way his opposite, right? At least the big ones, Lex Luthor, Bizarro, Brainiac. So Witwer Doomsday is the same deal, again in a new way. He was orphaned on earth, raised as a human, etcetera, trying to be a decent guy, except that his destiny is to tear shit up instead of saving everybody. In fact, I wish he'd been along the whole time, and we'd been like, how does this guy fit into the Superman story(like I still ask with Chloe), and then after eight seasons somebody flips the switch. Yeah, that would have been way cooler, if in fact impossible to pull off on a TV series that might be cancelled at any minute, but anyway now I'm just blabbering. -

Last night's episode was one of the best in 8 seasons. The chemistry between Clark and Lois was spot on. At this point, I'd rather see a Smallville movie than another possibly bad Superman movie. It's just a shame it took this long to really get that honest chemistry between characters on the show. I definitely think the Lois and Clark angle will make this year's and possibly the last season be one of the best.

WTF was up with that goofy hairstyle? It's the type of style that can only be appreciated in Hollywood, I guess, just like Scientology. I never cared much for Lana's character, but I at least found her hot. Not so much in last night's ep, while at the same time Lois was looking better than ever (and I never use to be into her).
I wasn't suppose to be watching this season, cause it sounded like it was gonna be the shittiest one yet, but I agree with others in that it has gotten better. I'm not sure I'm cool with Chloe going back to not knowing Clark's secret, unless they quickly reveal it again. That smile of hers was pretty cool at the end though. -
Was there a legal reason for them not letting him fly yet? Or even a decent story reason (considering he was floating out of bed in S1 and could fly when evil).

Never missed an episode..This last season is great...Kudos to the new Show runners. Ratings are improving. So.....I suspect another season. CW canceled the Graysons. So why change a winning team: Supernatural/Smallville!!

I watch smallville i've watched it from the start and tonights was proper shit. This season so far has been bollocks 10 episodes later and lana pops up who really does fuck all for the story other than delay lois and clarke having some sexy time.
Then you got the 10 episodes of wheres lex ? oh there he is watching TV, LAME. Wasted 10 episodes of the season on nothing. The joke of the season is that in under an episode he rebuilds and the gets his FOS infested with brainiac black mold of doom.
I'll still watch it but its just a fucking mess. Just got to add the costume for doomsday was pants too hence why they had to shoot it in almost pitch black. -

talented writers could deliver more scripts or longer ones-why not take the scripts and break the shows down into 2parts? Ever been in script meeting and heard- we love it, but its a bit long, tighten it up...End result of longer seasons? Better character development, better audience retention

I am honestly enjoying Smallville more this year than I did last season, which was mediocre at best, with the exception of Lex killing Lionel in "Descent", which ruled. I am looking forward to the rest if the season, with the Legion showing up and the Persuader. This season has been a Superman fanboy's dream!

Lex killing Lionel in "Descent" didn't rule. Killing off the show's best character, and the series strongest actor, didn't rule. What did rule however, was Lex's confrontation with Clark later on in that same episode.

First of all, just because you're talented doesn't mean you're a f'n workhorse. Second, if you add to the staff you risk creating an even greater disparity between the tones of individual episodes. Third, when showrunners tell you to "tighten up" the script, it's generally because you're going on too long, not because you're running out of time to tell your story. "Tighten it up" is not code for "make it shorter", it means TIGHTEN IT UP. Longer seasons = burned out writers, burned out viewers, inconsistent season arcs... You have this bizarre and frankly wrong from everything I've experienced notion that given more time, a writer will develop a character more and the audience will be more devoted. Well, given more time more EVENTS will happen to him/her, but events happening does not = character development. And again I'll point to Lost Season 4 and Mad Men for your retention point. Fans of both shows are DROOLING for the next season. Ask any Lost fan if there are filler episodes and they'll give you a resounding, "Yes!". But that's EVERY show. Every hourlong drama that's ever been on the air with a season episode count of 20+ has had filler. Imagine the filler if you had the numbers you're talking...

have done a pretty decent job transitioning from the utter mess left over by the previous show runners. They've fixed a lot of the structural problems with the series and moved the character and overall story arcs in the right direction. There are still some issues with dialog, sub plots etc and they still has a lot to prove and it falls far short of being a great show, but it's actually become something I think I'll watch weekly. At least for now.

ok, so maybe 52 week season is over kill I'll give you that...but 36? NO, in general we get 23 eps a season, with hiatus for sports, special events, repeats over holiday weeks they stretch the TV season from out for 8 months- oct-may that's roughly 36 weeks..now going into a season a well staffed writers team COULD produce 36 well wriiten scripts for neary ANY show without too much trouble or given the dynamic of current programing they could certainly flesh out a number of scripts into longer episodes-not ever crime should needs to be wrapped up in an hour....some programming- effects heavy shows and comedies might have a more difficult time....thought, in the end i think a longer season- certainly one with out interruption, would make for more for a more loyal audience....

come on your argument is filler shows? generally they are the result of 1 budget issues- producers wanting a show that will be cheap to film, 2 time constraint- writers needing to come up with an episode quickly 3 actor availability-needing to work around somebodies shooting schedule...again better planing and the foreknowledge that they need to deliver x number of episodes-hell drop the episode # and call it hours, that alone would improve story telling- of the show each year...hell the freedom of not being constrained to coming up with 22 shows that HAVE to be wrapped up in 30 or 60 minutes?

...I finally got around to watching this ep. First of all, where's Pete? Nobody even mentioned his absence... also, how about Chloe's dad, isn't he still alive and living in Smallville? What about the General? I would have loved to see Michael Ironside return as Lois' dad, to be there for his niece's big day. And finally, if all this damage went down at the Kent Farm, why weren't the casualties taken to the Smallville Medical Center instead of the much-farther-away Met. General? The answer to these questions and so many more: lazy writing. Though I am looking forward to the Legion episode in '09. Maybe Clark will ask them for a flight ring, to which they'll respond, "you don't need a ring to fly! You're Superman!" Ah, to dream...

While I agree that John Glover was the glue to that show for the longest time, he had to die to advance Lex's storyline. Without Lex killing his dad, his transition to utter badass villain wouldn't have rang as true, IMO. No doubt about the final moment @ Lionel's funeral. It really showed the first true Superman-Lex standoff on Smallville.

Eight years and at long last Smallville is building real momentum towards Clark becoming Superman. It's finally turning into a show my wife and I are really excited about tuning in each to see how something new will unfold. The sucky thing is that just as soon as he does become Superman, BANG! I am enjoying seeing this incarnation of the D.C. universe unfold this year. Granted, in years past I was usually left feeling under whelmed. Anyone remember what the show did to Mxyzptlk. But this season has been quite different and I am enjoying it. So my hat’s off to the new producers and the writing team I guess. Hopefully a solid spin-off is in the works. “Justice League” would be cool. Just saying.

Again, giving a story more time doesn't make it better, it just makes it longer. Again, you're going to get more disparity between individual episodes. You don't get a more devoted audience by giving them more to watch. Are you completely ignoring what I said about Lost and Mad Men? How about the Sopranos, which had on average 13 episodes per season? Or Deadwood? And would you say those fans weren't devoted? And that point you make at the end of the filler response: well, then, I guess you're calling for the complete overhaul of how episodic TV runs, aren't you? That's how episodic TV operates. You have 30-60 minutes to tell a story, sometimes 120 if you write a two-parter. You have an average of 22 episodes to write. You know why that is? Because in the 50+ years that TV has been around, that's what WORKS. In fact, I would say that TV is going in the direction OPPOSITE to your proposal. It looks like the smart money is on SHORTER seasons. Is that because TV writers/showrunners are stupid? No, it's because they know that compacting the season makes the writing crisper and the fans hungrier for more.
