Nov. 19, 2008, 12:35 p.m. CST
i own both a ps3 and a 360. i like them both. but the nxe is integrated far better into the xbox than the xmb is, especially in regards to things like not corrupting your littlebigplanet saves. likewise, right now im playing gears of war 2, and you're playing resistance 2.

I remember when games were just games. At their best, they had either a kick ass storyline or kick ass gameplay and interactivity. But now, we have Miis and Avatars and Online Co-Play and all this other bullshit we really don't need. I will forever swear by SNES and PS1 RPG's. Anything after that not named Silent Hill can fuck off. This next generation of gaming is just too dense to even begin to navigate. Absolutely ridiculous when people at the local Gamestop spend more time arguing over one series or another, or which system has a superior processor. It's HORSESHIT.

Nov. 19, 2008, 12:46 p.m. CST
I see this as more of a needed change than an advancement over the competition. The XMB is is simplistic yet easy to organize and maneuver. This is a great update for the 360 but in now way is it "better" than the XMB. And Sony isn't BLOCKING anything, (sensationalist much?) the license for MS had expired on those distributions. Honestly, why would Sony refuse money?

it's because of Blu-ray this is a now a very major competitor for them. Instant HD Streaming. With this around people do not need to by blu ray players or movies.

You are a perfect example of a tool. Used to regurgitate targeted information. Yes all the companies haven't been the prettiest bedfellows but to point to rootkit, like a silly broken record is retarded. It was one division Sony BMG, they hired third party companies to create security, and the issue affected 100 titles (between XCP and media max). But to use it as an indicator for all their businesses departments is just plain FUD. Like their games division. The software has always been inhouse.
Nov. 19, 2008, 12:58 p.m. CST
No, it isn't. Why do you think the Sony pushed for the PS3 to be apart of the DNLA. Non proprietary hard drive. Wider support for media extensions. Divx connect? http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/09/sony-pictures-televisions-serving-up-content-to-divx-certified/ Sony doesn't care. They are not the only people involved in blu ray or have the most to gain and no matter what format their media ends up in, they still get paid. People cannot seem to wrap the idea around their heads that DD is still a long ways off and out of any Major Company out there, Sony is afraid the least. They will make money out of it.

I'm with Sony again. Don't get me wrong i had some amazing gaming experiences on the old 360 while it worked like Halo and crackdown but there's only so many system fuck ups you can take and the noise of the actual unit when watching a DVD meant i basically couldn't watch one after the kids were in bed because you have to turn the volume up way too loud to get over the industrial noise! or watch it with subtitles on as i often did! a next gen machine actually forcing me to read subtitles! lol!<P>wish i had one back for Gears 2 but i can't say i miss red ring watching!

Seriously, it was time for an update to the XBox live experience. I own one and a PS3 as well. Both systems have their merits, but I have to admit I am reaching for that PS3 controller a lot more lately with the increase in Blu-Ray releases and better games for the Sony. As for Sony blocking Netflix from renting their content on the 360, well it totally makes sense. Generate some exclusivity, at least with newer titles and until they get people familiar with the PS Store dowload proccess. Then start releasing older titles on the 360. Anyway, them there's my 2 cents worth o nothin

if you think that studios will bypass bluray for digital download of 1080p files, well thats just your hard luck for being dumb, i know i'll be seeing films like seven samurai and star wars and Lord of the rings in 1080 way before you downloaders ever do, ..and from what i heard netflix on xbox checks your internet connection and determines what quality of video you can access...

Was sick to death of having nothing to play on it and I'm sick of hearing people say otherwise. The fact is, everything worth playing on PS3 is also on 360 and it's nearly always a better port on Microsoft's box. The "exclusives" have all been one trick ponys; played once never to grace the disc drive again. The exclusive software is utter dreck, Resistance 2 is a major disappointment and after playing Killzone at the London Games Festival I can confidently say that they've done the impossible; managed to make a game as dull as the original.<br><br>But we're talking NXE here...very slick. I'm liking the new look a lot more than the blades which, at times, seemed sluggish and slow. Still unsure about the Avatars though, they seem a little over-featured and I felt a bit of a tool putting mine together.

Well you Americans are WAAAAY ahead of the UK in terms of bandwidth allocation then. I have 10mbs cable broadband and would have a hard time streaming HD files. I am also one of the lucky ones as most people who use a phone line can only get speeds of 2-5mbs. Added to the fact that the "fair usage policy" on most people's internet connection is far from fucking fair, I can't see netfilx making much money over here. If I Download more than 750mb between the hours of 16:00 and 22:00 I am capped to 1mb, fucking rip off. What's the story for internet connections over in the USA?

You sound like a fifteen year-old fanboy; are you? What precisely is wrong with the online play? Its free and runs well. I own both systems and share my love almost equally. Xbox has a horrible disc drive and a slimming number of exclusive titles, though it still has a greater variety on offer and is improved with the new interface. In terms of hardware and software, the PS3 is slick and rarely falters. I would say it needs better third party support, but now that (excluding Bethesda) it is generally the platform which is developed for, this is less of an issue.<BR>...and gears 2 IS better than resistence, but the latter has a better multiplayer. <BR>Time for this geek to sign out and go back to Dexter.

some of the titles, which are anybody's guess, are confirmed HD (like The Thing) but it's HD in resolution but the compression codec leaves something to be desired. the majority are not and to be honest the choice of movies streaming from netflix are paltry and most of them simply suck. even an hd download from xbox live or psn doesn't compare to the bitstream of a BluRay.... Check out the final scene of Speed Racer on all services and tell me that BluRay isn't superior.<p> Which is why I own a 360 for gaming, and a PS3 for bluray, and the odd 3 or 4 titles that are exclusive that are worth getting (LBP, MGS4, Gran Turismo and uhhhh.... shit)

for music and movies. The video player on PS3 is superior to Xbox's in every respect. Enhanced black levels, jump to any spot in seconds accurate to the second, even chapters are available now (with more options than Xbox). I had the Xbox for a good solid 4 months, so yeah, I can make the proper comparison as a media player. <p> As a game system, I don't think they're that different from one another. As for interface, I liked the Xbox's old interface a bit more, because it seems more responsive and more intuitive. All in all, love my PS3, but don't really play a lot of games on it.

Nov. 19, 2008, 3:31 p.m. CST
nope, wrong. I've probably been gaming since your were an itch in your daddy's pants. I think besides die-hard ps3 fanboys, its been failry obvious for most of this year that Sony's light is fading. They completely botched this gen. I love the ps3, its a dope machine. But anyone who thinks it's line-up or online capabilites even come close to what the 360 has offererd from the beginning is either self-delusional or just loyal to a fault.

I'm liking it. The avatars are fun and will add a lot to the social games coming as part of 'prime time'. I also dig Miis, but never have anything to do with them on the Wii because most of the games I dig over there don't utilize them. Here, there will be activities that actually use them. Rare did a good job on them, they're fun. As for the UI, it's just plain -better-. I'm also digging the Netflix. No, it isn't blu-ray awesome, but it's two things blu-ray isn't: immediate and FREE. I was paying for XBL and Netflix anyway, this just instantly added literally hundreds of dollars worth of value to my 360 overnight. And no, I'm not a damn plant, I'm not even a huge fan of Mickeysoft, but I call 'em like I see 'em and this is a home run that only looks to get better with time.
Nov. 19, 2008, 3:39 p.m. CST
One thing many here seem to be forgetting is that this Christmas is a death knell for the PS3. So far, they've been selling as blu-ray units. You can now score a blu-ray player at any Wal-Mart for $198. That effectively kills what I think will be the vast majority of PS3 sales. The 360 has much more appeal to gamers with a vastly superior list of titles, a better online experience, and now a killer new UI. The Wii is now plentiful out in stores, and that still prints money. The PS3? What, Resistance 2? Will that really move consoles? Yeah, say so-long to your overpriced movie player, it's going the way of the Dreamcast within a year.
Nov. 19, 2008, 3:47 p.m. CST
PS3 isn't the lead SKU for development by a longshot. It's an absolute nightmare to develop on; costly and time consuming. It's why games nearly always look better on 360. That said, even GriD, made on PS3 hardware, has a 15% performance edge on 360. Of course, you're just echoing the usual propoganda.<br><br>PS3's a lame duck console.

Nov. 19, 2008, 4:08 p.m. CST
First of all, the Wii, which has the worst review scores in general for software and looks like ass on a 1080p 46 inch set, is the winner. So we're fighting for lucrative second place between 360 and PS3.<p> I also was infuriated with MS for years and my first Xbox had a dead DVD drive which pissed me off to no end discovering that even though it was known they have high failure rates, it would cost me 100 bucks to replace. My current 360 has disc read errors and its my second, the first having RROD.<p> For the record, I love my PS3 as a piece of hardware. It feels more stable and decently built than the 360. I also find certain games need its controller - I much much prefer Bionic Commando or Mirror's Edge on Ps3. But shooters, not so much. The 360 controller is the best FPS controller made thus far.<p> Ultimately however it comes down to exclusives and DLC and - online play.<p> I got into the Resistance 2 beta and the one time I tried to play I couldn't find a single person online to play. Not a one. I have two people in my friends list on PS3, and like 100 on Xbox Live. Hardly anyone uses a headset on the PS3 and the games tend to be laggier, which means that people don't play together as well, which means they don't form instant gaming friendships. The fact is, online play on PS3 is nowhere near as robust or seamless or well done as it is on Live.<p> And then there are the exclusives. Again, the only ones worth it are MGS4 which is well and truly done and whose online component is a nightmare. LBP, which is a work of gaming genius but is collapsing due to Sony's online moderation policies and poor server quality, and uhhh maybe Uncharted, which is a good game but nothing worth raving about.<p> the simple fact is that for adult gamers, the 360 has the most titles, the most exclusives, more DLC, and generally the titles being developed first for 360 run smoother on them.<p> Sad but true. I own both consoles and love my ps3 as a bluray and am not getting rid of it any time soon and look forward to white knight story.<p> But as an owner of both, and a Microsoft hater, I have to admit that I would recommend to anyone asking to get a 360 for Xmas if they are buying games for anyone over the age of 14 (in which case I'd tell them Wii)
Nov. 19, 2008, 4:18 p.m. CST
Because I have actual PEOPLE that come over to my place to chill or whatever, and it's basically a total party machine. Every fucking person in the house watches someone play it once and then they're like, I gots to get my turn. I never had that with the 360 or the PS.

Netflix = awesome New Desktop = awesome Avatars = better than Wii, but still suck I know what I look like, so why the hell do I want to look at a crappy digital representation of myself... Plus I'm older than 10 years old, so that feature does absolutely nothing for me. I don't like how it doesn't default to the My Xbox, and instead always loads the damn Spotlight page first. If I bought the system and I'm paying for the service, why should I be forced to look at advertising, at least TiVo sticks it down at the bottom of my lists! And oh yeah, Avatars still suck.
Nov. 19, 2008, 4:30 p.m. CST
as far as i've read (and i am under no false pretences about my knowledge of the medium; it is little) on a few games sites, the playstation was initially difficult to develop for, but that isn't as much a problem now, given the time to become accustomed to it. i was just offering my thoughts: i like both consoles. as it is, your point about being the lead platform to develop on is probably right. i play games to enjoy myself and as such will play on any platform to open myself up to as many as possible. propaganda? calm down mate.

Before you send it back to Microsoft, try this: wrap the xbox in a blanket, insulate it, make it nice and hot in there, and leave the xbox running for 45 mins to an hour, then turn it off, wait a few mins, then start it back up. One of the most common problems with the XBOX is the soldering on some of the connections - it gets brittle and chips off. This remelts some of the soldering and tends to fix the red eye. Just something to try.

While its true this may create a temporary fix it ussually doesnt last more than 8-10 hrs and there have been numerous reports that M$ can sometimes tell, which will negate your warranty. This means you may be risking years with your 360 for a day. Totally not worth it.

Are you actually in Microsofts pocket or just too lazy to do anything but go to xbox.com for your research. This whole games thing is just embarassing, either get someone with some integrity or drop the whole thing. I mean Ive seen reveiws on here based on ad's jesus you make the guys at Game Informer look like Pauline Kael.

So in order to use Netflix, do I also have to subscribe to XBox Live? Can I buy the cheapest Netflix package ($6.99) and still watch as many movies a month as I want on my X-Box? What's the cheapest X-Box Live package I can buy?

I just don't look at the things I grew up with as disposable. My memory is so sharp, I can remember where I was during every scene in the RPG's of my teens and preteens. Suikoden 1, at the Qlon Caves. It was summer vacation. I woke up early one morning, the front porch surrounded by fog. I basked in the glow of the cold summer morning, then went inside to retrieve the Star Dragon Sword that would defeat Neclord, and I did it with an incredibly diverse cast of characters in my party. Compare that to today's games. An example: Halo 3. I came home from my shitty job to shoot things up and talk shit to my friends online. There may have been special things going on in my life, but I didn't notice, because to be self aware or at the very least aware of your surroundings or the world at large is to be 'emo' or 'lame'. The day I can't escape to the past when everything was richer and more rewarding, is the day I don't want to live any more. I still have my SNES and PS1 hooked up. They are treasures, reminders of the days the likes of which I will never gaze on again. Cultivated innocence. Uncoveted by the dark gimme-gimme xanax masses who go to sleep every morning as soon as they wake up. If you can't understand that, I don't want to know you.

Wow, nice graphics and wide open spaces don't make up for a game that has maybe 3 or 4 different types of missions. How many times can I kill someone, blow something up, or take something before I pass out from sheer boredom? <P></p> Cool news about HL though. Where the fuck is Episode 3?

Kinda like a paying a fee to the post office for the privilege delivery of your Netflix movies. Great stuff, eh?

previously (around 7:00AM) i entered code after code and it was invalid. Now that I have returned from work and entered another *sigh* code the damn thing actually streams...and fast.<p>Just one minor/major gripe;not enough selection to choose from and with Sony/MGM witholding their film library, it's even more of a bummer. but Iv'e been streaming my own film collection that I have converted to Divx, from my purchased DVDs anyway.<p>Great idea and long overdue Microsoft.
Nov. 19, 2008, 5:45 p.m. CST
XBOX won the war, sorry. They brought out a powerful machine, have a large library, with a price point about $100-$200 less then SONY's machine, which, as good as it may be, is LUDICROUSLY expensive, with a tiny library, and the only perk being a blueray player which are coming down in cost anyway. SONY basically blew the farm through hubris and lost the war.

Usually the episodes are their own little "movie", and so when you select a TV show to watch, a list will show up with each episode and you can run right down the list and click the play button beside each one. It's pretty cool. I started watching The Office that way. <p></p> Right now, I am watching the HD version of 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' and when it measures my internet connection, I managed to get 3 of 4 bars full so the quality is better than SD-DVD, but the sound is only in ProLogic. What's the deal with that?
Nov. 19, 2008, 5:47 p.m. CST
An underpowered console with a huge shortage of games and in most cases they're rated E-T. I just don't get the hype.NXE is an interesting idea, but the Mii ripoff Avatars does not make the upgrade original as it's hyped to be.
Nov. 19, 2008, 5:47 p.m. CST
I guess I could look it up. But feeling lazy. Also, is there a list somewhere where I can see the titles available for streaming (HD or otherwise) or do I have to sign up before I see that?

Try NewEgg but whatever you do: DO NOT GO THROUGH THE XBOX360 AND GIVE MS YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER. It took me almost an hour to get it removed from their servers - you have to actually call to speak to a human. It's pretty lame. Just buy a 1 year subscription card from an outlet/NewEgg... I think the Netflix subscription you'll need is @ $9.99

But anyone who says the PS3 has a small game lineup obviously has never looked at whats available for the system. To some people, the 360 is better and to others, the PS3, and I think it all comes down to preference. It's amazing, though, how long the 360 fanboys have been waiting for the PS3 to die. Sony beat the 360 most of this year and if they were to lower the price again, they would again.<BR><BR> Of course, whether or not Sony are smart enough to do that is up for debate. Releasing the system at $600 was a stupid idea in the first place and you'd think they'd see the success of their last price drop and do it again, now that they're back in third. But, whatever, I don't own stock so it's not my problem.<BR><BR> I will say, though, that I can count the number of 360 exclusives that I'd like to play that I'm missing by owning a PS3 on one hand and have three fingers left over. The Sony first party exclusives are so much better than the Microsoft ones. But, once again, that's a matter of preference.<BR><BR> I will say, though, that this article is proof that one area where there can be no dispute as to the strength of Microsoft is in public relations. If Resistance 2 was hyped up the same way that Gears of War 2 was, then every kid on earth would own it. Microsoft excel at hyping up their products, something Sony really need to learn how to do properly.

I am armed with knowledge now. I understand that their HD choices suck, but how many SD streaming movies do they have available? And how does their streaming SD look on a 42 inch plasma. I know it's not going to knock my socks off. But is it at least presentable?

... and Asians and Africans and Canadians and (etc)... <p> Honestly how they can give everyone this update but only include the Netflix and other Media additions to North America is shocking! If they have copyright issues with Netflix in Europe then why not make a deal instead with LOVEFiLM over here? Whilst USA has a huge selection of film and TV we get a handful of over priced music vids that you can see on the Internet or TV for free and maybe twenty film titles. <p> Very, very poor show.

I downloaded the update this morning and tested out one of the videos. The one with Lebron James. It started playing almost immediately and it looked pretty good so I thought it would be fine. However, after about 20 seconds or so it paused and started buffering then it played for about 10 more seconds and did the same thing again. Played for 10 seconds pause buffer repeat. the video is only about 4 minutes long. After about 5 minutes it looks like it only played about half way through. Just terrible. On the other hand, Netflix through the 360 was seamless. Watch about 15 minutes of a 20 minute video with absolutely no issues whats so ever. What ever they are doing Microsoft needs to copy it...
Nov. 19, 2008, 7:47 p.m. CST
I think that the move by Microsoft is really a poor one. Wii is GEARED for family fun. 360 and PS3 are for GAMERS, and I think Sony gets that. I not only prefer Sony's menu system, but thoroughly admire it's simplistic beauty. It is stylish, sophisticated, and screams "I am the wave of the future." True, the 360's menu system was in desperate need of an overhaul, but to try and go the way of the Wii? I think it could end up backfiring on Microsoft. As a hardcore gamer, I don't want to turn on my system and see some cutsie-pie little kid bullshit. I want to see high-tech, bullet hole ridden, half-naked-chick-aiming-a-big-f@cking-gun-at-my-ass sweetness. Is that too much too ask?
Nov. 19, 2008, 7:59 p.m. CST
I really don't think that's too much to ask.

man i don't give a fuck if my console boots up into a care bears front end as long as it has the best games with the most dlc and the most robust online system for play. and sadly, as much as i hate to admit it, MS has it this generation. PS3 sells less every month in third place, has a smaller base than 360, is more expensive to develop for, has no dedicated servers for gaming, is going apeshit crazy with its Little Big Planet moderation, and has narrowed down its must have exclusives to a slender slender pick.<p> And look, yes, the PS3 is harder to develop for - which is why MGS4 is the single greatest visual accomplishment of this generation in console gaming - but don't expect any publisher to ever put that much money again into a single console exclusive for PS3. Which in my mind is a tragedy, yes. But Sony's poor marketing, bad business decisions have doomed the PS3 to third place. In fact there's no going back. It's already over. 360 sales last month were twice that of the PS3. There are stacks of discounted MGS4 in Akihabara in Tokyo, and even Amazon was selling the supposedly limited edition grey MGS4 playstation again.<p> Now if you can name one exclusive title for me that's going to make the PS3 surpass the 360 please do so.
Nov. 19, 2008, 8:36 p.m. CST
dude, how do you patch your games?<p> the NXE lets you install games to the HD for faster performance and less noise... And yes it is faster overall, but accessing features like friends lists and so on easily probably doesnt matter to someone who doesnt use Live.<p> But seriously, you're not even willing to give games a try without plugging in your headset? No AI on earth can match real players.
Nov. 19, 2008, 8:39 p.m. CST
I have a 46 inch 1080p set.<P> Season one of 30 rock in HD looked as good as a broadcast transmission on my TWC HD. The Thing looked comparable to HD on demand cable.<P> The SD movies don't fare so well, you can see compression artifacts. It isn't as good as an upscaled DVD. But it's comparable to digital SD cable, to be honest<p> The thing is, the list of titles isn't that great, honestly. And I think this licensing deal blindsided some studios who didn't know what was going on. I expect great indie films to end up here but not many majors... The high quantity of Starz exclusives makes me think it must be tied into them somehow and whatever library they have access to.<P> But it's definitely a cool feature.

... seriously, the only people who still don't understand how much a piece of shit the PS3 is are the very same Sony Zombies who like taking it up the ass from Sony every chance they can get.<br><br>And Sony is such a dick, they don't have the common courtesy to give a reach-around as they anally rape their idiotically loyal customers.<br><br>PS3 has nothing. Nothing. They have one good game, and another decent game. Resistance 2 sucks as much as Resistance did.<br><br>The 360 has SERIES of games that set records for most sold and they're only on ONE console. We're talking Halo and Gears for the record breakers, but also games like Mass Effect and Fable II for ground-breaking gaming experiences.<br><br>The Wii outsells them both because it's cheap, and kids love it. The Wii also doesn't discriminate against 51% of the world's population. Yes, I'm talking about chicks. Just like with the DS Lite, the Wii is the only console that has games for girls of all ages. The 360 has some kids games, but only a very small amount, and none of them geared towards chicks. The Wii does. This is why the Wii outsells. If you're a family with a little girl, you buy her a Wii. Also, it's fun. Not being able to download DLC for Rock Band is totally not cool, but the next Wii will have a hard drive to fix that issue.<br><br>The facts are, Sony Zombies, that you bought the lame duck console that no one likes to design top-notch games for, and you're always so willing to take Sony's unlubed dick up your asses, that when they do things like drop backwards compatibility for the PS2 on ALL of their new machines, you keep on taking it like the dumb little zombies you are. Also gotta love the shitty composite cables they pack with that over-priced doorstop, meaning you have to schil out another 50 bucks for decent HDMI or component cables to get HD. <br><br>Keep on taking it. Play sub-par games. Tell yourself you enjoy them. Me, I'll play my Gears, and Halo Recon, and then the one I'm really waiting for, Mass Effect 2, and FINAL FANTASY XIII, and you can play some other piece of shit game that's overhyped by lands with a thud (hmm... like just about every single Sony-only game to come out for the PS3).<br><br>Enjoy the dick in your ass, Sony Zombie Bitches!!!

Just go play your damn video game and calm the hell down. Stop being such stereotypical hater / fanboy / geek / Comic Book Guys. What the fuck do you care if someone likes 360 and you don't?
Nov. 19, 2008, 10:34 p.m. CST
I don't consider myself a fanboy, and own or have owned pretty much all the video game systems from sms and nes right up until this generation. (i.e. I don't own a 360 or ps3). But for some reason the way microsoft handled the transition from the original xbox to xbox 360 really rubbed me the wrong way. Every system I've owned from 1988 to now has either: 1. continued to work perfectly, 2. been supported through backards compatibility in newer systems, or 3. has been readly availible even to this day in good working order for cheap. The Microsoft XBOX I bought in 2002 started acting up in 2007 and right about then, XBOX stopped making them availible, and further, did not make xbox 360 fully backwards compatible. Nor do they make replacement components availible for repair. At least with the PS2, Sony had created the PStwo system, and ensured that in one way or another you'd still be able to play your PS2 games for years to come.. It may seem silly, but I find myself wary of buying a 360 until such a day as MS makes a way to play original XBOX games (all of them) readily availble (PC softward emulation?)
Nov. 19, 2008, 10:38 p.m. CST

Nov. 19, 2008, 10:41 p.m. CST
... you haven't been keeping up with much, have you?<br><br>There isn't a game that isn't worth playing from the XBox that you can't play (or maybe download off of Live) on the 360.<br><br>The list for backwards compatible games can be found on the website, and it's pretty massive. Check it out.<br><br>Don't buy a PS3, though, because all of the new PS3's have had the backwards compatibility completely removed.<br><br>Yet another example of how Sony buttfucks their loyal Zombies.
Nov. 19, 2008, 10:42 p.m. CST
Answer me that.
Nov. 19, 2008, 10:57 p.m. CST
oh, yeah, I knew about the ps3 compatibility being removed, and wasn't too keen on that either.. I just mean that I can still walk into alot of places and find a pstwo to buy, but not so much with xbox1. I'll have to check that compatibility list again, I'll admit the last time I checked it was some months ago.. but at that time I recall about half of my ~40 games not being present, which seemed kind of dismal.. (heh, and that's not counting crap like Sneak King)
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:01 p.m. CST
hmm.. perhaps I am looking at a bad list then? the one I found at xbox.com says it was last updated a year ago.. http://www.xbox.com/ en-US/games/backwardcompatibility gameslist.htm
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:07 p.m. CST
I checked wikipedia too.. stuff like enclave or lok:defiance, or midtown madness, to name 3 off the top of my head, seem to be absent. anyhow - was really only a minor niggle.. at this point for a variety of reasons I'll probably skip this generation alltogether and come back to it in time for the xbox720, ps4, and nintendo wiii or whatever silly names they come with.

by Sick Fixx
You don't have to worry about backwards compatibility.
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:13 p.m. CST
... there are some misses to be sure... for MS, it was an issue of units sold, because it's all emulator software... it's not like the PS2, which had the the PS2 drive and the PS1 drive in the same casing... also, if you're looking for a cheap XBox, head to GameStop where they're on sale right now for like $40.00.<br><br>Yeah, they're used, but they come with the 30 day warranty and don't have any of the issues the original 360's had (since corrected).<br><br>As it is, by sitting out this round, yes you will probably have more time to do things like meet women and have sex and such, but man, you're missing some of the most mind-blowing gaming experiences out there, only to be found on the 360.<br><br>PS - MS will also get the jump on Sony AGAIN, as the next XBox is due out at least two years before the next PS. Whether that's in 3 years, or 4 or 5, who knows, but Sony will once again be behind the lead dog.
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:13 p.m. CST
oh, I hold on to my old systems.. I'm such a video game nerd that I actually have to have them all hooked up.. so I've got about 14 systems routed through a variety of a/v switches to a few tv's throughout the house. I just meant specifically for the xbox, I thought it was a shame that once the dvd rom drive or hard disk fails, your choices for continued play are limited in some ways. sure I can buy a 'like new' refurbished drive online from some site (and in fact that's what I'm leaning towards doing) but it bugs me that microsoft doesn't simply make these parts availible for reasonable prices. I could send the system to microsoft to be repaired too.. but anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that is also a crapshoot as far as effectiveness.
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:18 p.m. CST
I guess that's the price to pay for the sophisticated technology of today's systems.. sure they're more complicated than the old ones.. but that also means that gone are the days of 'fixing' your system by sticking a brush in the cart slot, or even blowing on it. (and yeah I know that long term that does more harm than good). I'm sure some years down the road it will all be emulatable on PC and I'll be happy again.
Nov. 19, 2008, 11:27 p.m. CST
It reeks of the suits looking at Wii hardware sales and thinking 'wow this market is bigger than we thought we need more baby shit STAT'. Now that serious PC gaming is for all intents dead it's always sad to see other non-baby gaming outlet cave to the pressure.
Nov. 20, 2008, 12:39 a.m. CST
But all that other shit with the new avatars and crap is completely useless.
Nov. 20, 2008, 12:39 a.m. CST
holy shit, i remember thexder! game arts side scrolling transforming mecha shooter.<p> Anyways, I was so pissed at MS when my Xbox DVD drive died. Infuriated beyond belief. To call their customer support and have them admit that yes a number of them shipped with defective drives and all I could do is suck it up and pay a large fee to fix was so infuriating. I vowed to never do it again.<p> But then, I was at E3, and I felt the controller and i was amazed at how good it felt. And I saw some under wraps titles coming, actually playable. And I had a great day where me a buddy landed a huge deal so to celebrate as we lived on both coasts we got 360s to play games online together (as we both use Macs).<p> The system has totally won me over, even though I had the red ring of death. It even has more obscure JRPGS than the PS3 now. There's something about how the friends list and online gaming that works on 360 that is pretty much bulletproof.<p> I still have my PS2 hooked up and it probably stands as the console I got more out of than any other.. But Sony have stunned me with its continued missteps and inability to shore up developer support. Because that's what it all comes down to... What games are available. Go to metacritic and list the top games for 360 and do the same for PS3. There are more exclusives for 360 worth buying the console for.<p> I will continue to enjoy my PS3 as a BluRay player, I earnestly think it's worth it for cinema lovers. It reminds me of when Laserdiscs were for the hardcore movie lover. But as it stands I own four PS3 games and over 25 360 games.<p> I like the Wii in theory, but the fact remains that it has more poorly reviewed games than any other console.

I'll defend the PS3 a bit since no one seems to around here. As if the PS3 were a republican or something...Has anyone tried Valkyria Chronicles for PS3? That game is AWESOME. The art, the music, everything is just fucking great. Stop ripping on the big black machine, it's a good system with semi-ok online capabilities. Out of the box you get wifi, bluray, easily upgradable HDD (something I still hate XBOX for), remote play fuctionality (granted M$ doesn't have a handheld on the market...yet...), and the promise of God of War 3, GT5, Naughty Dog games etc etc, and a sleek AND QUIET machine. I love my 360 too, don't get me wrong, but PS3 gets way more hate than it deserves.
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:02 a.m. CST
They are both nice for different reasons. If I was purely a gamer and I had to chose one, I would chose the 360 in a heartbeat. But I'm a movie freak and I love Blu-Ray, so I gots to have that as well. There are a few nice PS3 exclusives, Uncharted most definitely. I still need to play LBP but I have a ways to go before I finish Fallout 3 (best game of the year) and a few others first. And yeah, overall PS3 has much better hardware and is a better media player.
Nov. 20, 2008, 2:21 a.m. CST
Sure, it seems faster, quieter & is a heck of a lot more interesting to navigate. BUT the avatar stuff is really basic, will they add more to it?
Nov. 20, 2008, 2:25 a.m. CST
"Microsoft has always been way far ahead of, say, Sony in terms of navigation"<br><br>BWa HAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHA HAHA!!!!!! Sure Merrick... they're so far ahead that they completely changed their original layout which was getting to bloated to deliver a poor man's XMB with this new Experience... You're full of shit!
Nov. 20, 2008, 3:09 a.m. CST
And completely out of nowhere too! Whatsamatter? Paranoia getting to some of you? I'm a happy PS3 owner. Got me a 60GB with backwards compatability, works rather well but they need to fix all those little issues, for example Silent Hill on PSOne has a very BIG problem that makes it impossible to play with the sound on. SOny should get off it's ass and fix that, otherwise all the PS2 games I'm getting on sale are wonderful!<br><br>And please stop deluding yourselves about Digital Distribution. If anything this new NXE and Netflix only further solidifies what a pain in the ass it is. For one, Netflix ain't available anywhere outside of the US. For 2, the selection is pretty crappy, and with Sony's movies gone it's even mroe half assed. And 3, let me get this straight... so I pay for Netflixx alright, so far so good... but now you're telling me I've gotta pay Microsoft for a Gold account too??? Fuck paying them to play games in the first place when I get precisely the same experience for entirely free on the PS3 and PC minus 1 bell and 1 whistle which will very likely come with the next update anyway... And please tell me, will Microsoft also save me money on my bandwidth charges too??? What? So I've got to pay EVEN more for a faster connection and mroe bandwidth??? And even if someone wanted to what if there's no infrastructure to even offer that kind of service until the next generation arrives??? Really, please tell me why I can't just take a 5 min walk to the rental shop beside my house and pick up a DVD or a blu-ray and maybe even finish watching it in about the same amount of time it takes to buffer through DD? ANd what if I want to own the movie... can't tae it to someone else's house? Can't move it around as I like? Have to put up with all these shit restrictions and no extras? You DD shills can go fuck yourselves! I'm going to go buy a blu-ray disc and stick it into my PS3 and enjoy the fuck out of it, then I'm going to go online and play a game for free after that with my friends because what a surprise I simply can! And I don't have to pay an extra cent! Plus I can pop up the PS3 browser and got to HULU or some other DivX site and stream something and I don't mind as it's also free! Hell maybe I'll even use the Sony online movie store on PSN and fly to another country and watch it streaming over my PSP just because I can to spite you! Hey, how'd HD-DVD holding up for you guys? Lots of sales on those I hear, must be wonderful! Can't wait for Dark Knight!<br><br>ANd as for games on PS3, I hear all this no games thoughts but imagine that I've got all these great games, MGS4, Uncharted, Ratchet, and all these other games the 360 has too, and maybe I'm not looking closely enough or have been skipping the broken ones because I haven't yet discovered anything that you pixel counters managed to find that makes my experience less than optimal... AH well Killzone 2 will be here and everyone loves that, and it looks awesome and desptie that I don't play online that much I think I'm gonna have fun, cuz hey I got all that bandwidth to spare that downloading movies would've taken up... Anyway, the DD advocates are right about one thing, DD is indeed the future... but why should we care? We'll all be old and half blind or hard of hearing or dead by then... but maybe Microsoft will be happy to sell us LIVE glasses and hearing aids to thsoe still living and you can subscribe for it on top of the other services available out of your retirement pensions. Anyway I wouldn't have minded owning a 360, wouldn't subscribe to LIVE though but at least for the games and I'd propr it up next to my PS3 and Wii, but I'm not so addicted to gaming that I'm going to waste money on a shittily built console that's guaranteed to fail and guaranteed to screw me once the warranty runs out, sounds like it's getting awfully close to that time too. Let's hope for your sakes Microsoft is still feeling generous to update those replacement clauses!<br><br>Anyway back on topic we're talking about the NXE here and it looks better, but the avatars otherwise fuck up what should be a more hardcore console to appeal to hardcore gamers. ANd the style just looks as if I'm passing billboards while driving on the highway so it's also kinda irritating, I'll stick with the XMB and Sony's sleekness, they've got style I'll tell ya nd I prefer the PSN store and thumbnails, hell I prefer the Wii's channels to this... But I believe the NXE also includes and option to pop up the ol blades for whoever prefers it right? ANyway the insecure xboys can go back to fellating each other and high fiving themselves over saving money for goign with the cheaper console although they'll just end up paying more than that once the disc drives fail and subscribing to LIVE and upgrading their internet bandwidth unless they're somhow leeching off somewhere in their college dorms or their parents.<br><br>Hey Merrick, will AICN games also deliver another one of these when HOME comes to PS3? That way there's equal opportunity for everyone to bitch and whine about what's on the other console they don't own!

I played it at the London Games Festival and it's as boring and linear as the original on PS2. It's incredibly drab with a color pallete that goes from grey to brown and back again. However, that's only if you can avoid having a serizure from the overuse of the shaky cam which comes on everytime you move fast, throw a grenade or generally aim.<br><br>And don't bore us with Home, how long has that been on the cards? Since forever, a lot like the majority of PS3 "exclsuives" which always seem to be complete crap or have ZERO replay value.<br><br>To quote Boogie Nights - "If it looks like shit, and it sounds like shit; it must be shit".

I don't really like competitive play on consoles. I prefer to just do my own thing.<br><br> I play MMOs on my PC when I want to play with/against other players. Formerly WoW, currently Warhammer.

...for all the Sony plants.<p> How many great games have I played on my 360 in just the last month? Fable II, Fallout 3, Gears 2, Dead Space, Guitar Hero World Tour, Left 4 Dead!<p> NXE is ok once used to it...but bring Netflix to Oz!
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:22 a.m. CST
I kind of like the idea of the avatars, but it's such a total, direct rip off of the Miis. Miis are more fun, though, since you can take a pair of eyebrows and put them anywhere, so you could make them look like antennas and make your guy into a bug-man. If they were more realistic, it'd be harder to say "Yeah that looks like me", I guess, but I still kind of wish they would've used a more original look.
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:43 a.m. CST
They were late to the game. Why? Well Sony's style of running their gaming business was make games and make more games. That's about it. When Sony realized that online game could catching on. They made a half assed attempt with the PS2's network adapter, but by then it was too late on the PS2 front. It never caught on. MS knew exactly how to capture the online market and ran away with it. Meanwhile Sony was playing catch up and still is to this day. There simplistic style of running a game company has caught up and bit them in the ass!

Units sold in U.S. Wii 16.31 Million XBox 360 13.36 Million PS3 6.40 Million oooohhh DEAD LAST!!!! I guess having a Blu Ray player and free Online service can't make up for the fact that most of the games SUUUUCK!! Wasn't hating on Sony until they decided to cut their movies off.. talk about hate!
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:57 a.m. CST
I think MS did say they were talking to Lovefilm. One problem though is that Netflix (I think) includes downloads to pc as part of the subscription, whereas for Lovefilm we have to pay extra per film - as long as that's the case there wouldn't be much benefit connecting the Xbox to Lovefilm.

That new NXE is soooo cool!! Seems like Microsoft knows how to make a 3 year old console new again. Oh, and the games this year... Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Halo 3 coming soon.. great exclusives. Speaking of exclusives, can't wait for the Metal Gear Solid port. And since I have a Blu Ray player, don't need to overwork my game system to watch movies. Eat my ass.

Still don't understand why Sony would cut their movies from Netflix streaming. Watching them from PC's was ok, but watching them from an XBox is not? How greedy can one corporation be? Johnno you condone this? Haven't we seen enough greed in the last few weeks? No bailout for the auto companies... stop paying for Lucas movies.. and don't buy a PS3!!!!

MGS4, which many blast for being more like a movie than a game... getting no love from self-confessed 'movie geeks'???<P> MGS4 is better than any game I've played on any console this year [yeah, got X360 too, but am not much into online gaming, so don't use it much]

You are the biggest 360 fanboy I have ever seen. It spills out to the other sites I have seen you on? Why do I doubt you ever owned a PS3? This talkback has alot of ignorant comments and BS. first of all Fiscal Year 08 PS3 - 9.24 million Xbox 360 - 8.7 million Fiscal Year 09 PS3 - 2.43 million Xbox 360 - 2.20 million yeahh How many in exclusives? Well I can only list what I have played 1. LittleBigPlanet 2. Resistance 2 3. Motorstorm 2 4. Uncharted 5. Ratchet & clank tools of destruction 6. Metal Gear Solid 4 7. Wipeout HD 8. Warhawk 9. Valkyria chronicles 10. Hot shots Golf out of bounds 11. Naruto ultimate ninja storm (if you are a fan) 12. Pixeljunk eden (really addictive) 13. Pixeljunk Monsters (semi addictive) 14. Heavenly Sword 15. Folklore (its hate it or love it) 16. GT5P 17. Disgaea 3 18. Siren 19. R&C Q4B (only if you liked T4D) 20. socom (once you get past server issues.) Some people might enjoy the orignal resistance and motorstorm, not my cup of tea but they have their own fans. and watch_the_world_burn , you sound like a plant yourself throwing MP titles into the mix just to pad your list. Fable 2, left 4 dead and gears 2 are the exclusives. And they go up against PS3 exclusives like LBP, resistance 2, Valkyrie chronicles, naruto ultimate ninja storm, motorstorm 2, and socom. For people bragging about how the PS3 has no games to play and the 360 has all these games I can't help but notice that it tends to be a habit that people throw in a handful of MP titles for good measure.

Is that there just seems to be a better quality of people who play it. I was discussing this, actually, with my friend who owns all three systems and he agreed with me on this. When you see PS3 owners, they tend to intelligently defend their system. They admit the mistakes Sony has made, but they also bring up how happy the games that are available for the PS3 make them. Sometimes, they're upset that when an exclusive becomes multi-platform, but most of them, myself included, don't care, as long as we still get to play it. Yes, I know Dead Space is awesome on the 360. How do I know it? Because I've got it on my PS3.<BR><BR> Then, you have 360 fanboys like TheAllSeeingAss and Expert here, who are just "Sony sucks! Suck my cock! 360 owns! PS3 has no games! It's $600!!" They'll tell lies and spread rumors. They'll call names. They'll overhype the most mediocre of games just because it's an exclusive (*cough* Halo 3 *cough*), but if something that was previously exclusive to them becomes multi-platform, suddenly it's crap. An example of this is Bioshock, which they touted as the greatest FPS ever, until the PS3 version was announced, and then suddenly, the game was "just okay." Same thing for Oblivion.<BR><BR> I realized I didn't want to be playing X-Box Live with people who resembled a Dane Cook audience (I also refuse to pay for an online service, so that was another factor). Every 360 owner I know has told me horror stories of having to play Call of Duty 4 against people like Expert_40. Yet, when I play it on my PS3, I've only had pleasant experiences. I think we can look at the comments made on this thread, alone, to see that the 360 fanboys are usually obnoxious knuckledraggers. TheAllSeeingEye has probably never even held a PS3 controller in his hands, but he likes to say that he sold his in order to turn people off from buying a system. Does he work for Microsoft? Does he have stock in them? No, he's just being a douche. Why would you want to play with someone like him?<BR><BR>Oh, and as for Home, as one of the BETA testers, 1.0 goes live today in closed BETA. Only a week or two until it's opened up to the public.
Nov. 20, 2008, 7:42 a.m. CST
with 360 fanboys, look at Expert_40's post where he brags about how great it is that the next X-Box system is coming pretty soon. Yeah, that'll be great when your 360's are obsolete, like Microsoft did to the original X-box. It'll be great to spend $200-400 on your system, only to have to spend another $400-500 in three years! Yeah!<BR><BR> Way to sell your system!
Nov. 20, 2008, 7:59 a.m. CST
Ckuouka, I must agree. Sony and the PS3 are in no way perfect but then again the slandeer and FUD that they have to contend with is not in the least bit objective.

As an artist with an interest in visual entertainment (of all kinds), I simply could NOT believe my eyes and the experience of GEARS 2. I was floored. Though unusual (for me), I was compelled to stay up all night and "finish" the campaign, after playing 2 to 3 hours each day. The game continued to amaze me...and it is ABSOLUTELY worth the purchase price of an Xbox 360, without question. Personally, I feel that the "art design" is on par with anything I've ever seen in entertainment. Seriously. Beyond the first couple of chapters, considering the confines of modern day video game technology,...yes, very much so. Wow. Simply, wow. Pound for pound, nothing else equals the entertainment value I've discovered in GEARS OF WAR 2. As great as the hours have been in watching and RE-watching THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS,...I simply get more for my money in the continued experience of GEARS OF WAR 2. An amazing game and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for anyone with the slightest interest. --After what I've seen and experienced with the game, I'm even looking forward to the movie. :-D

Oh no, is Sony in last place??? Now I must go home and weep... Because I'm certain it will stop working now... Oh wait, wrong console... As for games sucking, I'm sure enjoying them so I guess I have bad taste? Ironically, most of them are on the 360 too... so what does that suggest?<br><br>Oh boo hoo... Sony took their movies away... a sure sign that Digital Distribution is going to be sooo convenient... Whatever will you do??? As for this whole Netflixx thing, like I give a fuck what MS or Sony do to each other... From what I hear it's a licensing issue and once Netflixx coughs up the royalties, you'll have your movies again, so don't cry... but that's what that fancy blu-ray player is for, so why don't you hand over your cash to Sony through that avenue? It probably makes you feel all dirty doesn't it?<br><br>And oh, I can believe Microsoft is doing a great job of making your 3-year old console new again! Once that warranty's up, you're gonna need a whole new one! Fantastic! Sure beats waiting 3 months for a refurb! But hey MGS4 will be worth it, so keep telling yourself that and hang in there! And it sure must be nice to have a separate blu-ray player, as blu-ray discs have good protection so you don't have to risk your films getting fucked up by your 360's DVD drive...<br><br> And couldn't you have put all of this into one post? Or did you have to log back onto Live between posts with your new avatar into your little group thing with your other avatar friends in order to come up with all that rhetoric? I hear LIVE is famous for that and your last two posts to me suggest you were saving your best arguments for last... And we're supposed to take economic advice from you too? Perhaps the US wouldn't be in a recession if they managed to build good electronics instead of knowingly shoving shit out in the market thinking they'd just work it out later and stupid customers like you don't keep paying to buy the same damaged goods over and over. I'd be surprised if you even made it through the election... Now go home and give yourself a nice headshot, I hear it's what a lot of Wall Street people are doing and that's an achievement you can proudly display on your gamertag!
Nov. 20, 2008, 8:17 a.m. CST
It is a dman shame that AICN ignored MGS4 while trumpting about Halo 3... I guess because no one had a PS3, but it's a crying shame that a site like this ignored the best movie/game experience ever made... for someone like me who enjoys both films and games, it was heaven! But I've always been a big MGS fan since the PSOne title.
Nov. 20, 2008, 8:26 a.m. CST
I just wanted to add that in the options menu, you should take advantage of the ability to adjust the darkness level. Some people may lighten the video, in hopes of giving themselves an advantage (in gameplay). But for myself, I consider the "experience" more important...and I adjust it in a way that enhances that experience, as if I was watching a movie. And if looks freakin' sweet on the LCD television, in HD.
Nov. 20, 2008, 8:51 a.m. CST
I own an XBOX. I preferred the old Live design and am a little annoyed by the added cute factor, but otherwise it's mostly a new paint job for the previous version. It does now have a "copy game to the hard drive" feature I hear. That's new, ain't it?
Nov. 20, 2008, 9:08 a.m. CST
The reason why I say the PS3 is shit is simple. It IS shit. All of the games you've mentioned with the exception of two, are shit. The online service is shit. The lack of exclusive games worth owning is also shit. But hey, consumers also vote with their cash which is why PS3 fails to sell anywhere near the same volume of software that 360 and Wii does. It's why developers refuse to give it any real support beyond shoddy ports and why all of the old Playstation exclusives now find themselves on XBOX. Sorry to break your heart chuckles.
Nov. 20, 2008, 9:14 a.m. CST
I think you'll find it was the PS3 fanboys calling Bioshock a crap game until it was announced for their favourtie platform; not the other way around. Personally, I thought it was nice that idiots like yourself would finally be able to play a real game since you're incapable of owning another games console. It's just a shame that the PS3 version is an epic failure in comparison to its 360 counterpart. Will you be getting Bioshock 2? I doubt it.<br><br>Getting jealous over the plethora of great 360 exclusives isn't very becoming.

...as the above poster said, it is mind-blowing from an artistic point of view. <p> and it is a much more of a succesful interactive movie than MGS4 was - purely because the balance of gameplay and watching cut scenes is perfect. <p> Gameplay wise its nothing new - but its not really meant to be. As an epic blockbuster video-game movie it is unrivalled though.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but they've taken every navigation element from the old Blades and put them where the old Guide was. So now, just hit your big green X on the controller and you can quickly switch through friends list, music player, etc much faster than you ever could- and you can avoid the whole new dashboard this way as well. This also allows you to select and start a new game, even an Arcade title, while playing another game. You no longer have to quit the current game and dig through the dashboard- this quick launching is an excellent feature. And just because Nintendo had Miis first, I don't see how this is different than any other chat service or Internet forum that allows Avatars. Overall I really applaud this new "experience", considering it improves on my existing hardware in every way and it was free.
Nov. 20, 2008, 9:59 a.m. CST
I have all 3 systems. I also have a Game Cube, PS2, X-Box, PS, N64, Super Nintendo, NES, Genesis, and a few of the hand-held systems. I have the PS3 because I am not a 'brand hater' like so many of you shit-talkers seem to be. Rather, I enjoy playing a huge variety of games. And, let's face it, EVERY one of those systems has games for it that no other system has. Period. Sure, one could argue the various pluses that come out of each system, such as the Wii's unique and family entertaining game play. Or the 360's generally superior graphics. Or the PS3's built in Blu-Ray player and standard wireless remotes. You could also point out there flaws. Like the Wii's limeted marketability due to both it's design and graphics capability. Or 360's horrible failure rate. Or the PS3's lack of software and higher price point. But my question is: Why? I mean, what's the point? If you TRULY love games, then why would you want to limit yourself to just one system? That's flat-out stupid, I don't care what reason you can come up with. Real gamers want to be able to play ANY game they damn-well feel like, and not be limited over some petty brand-name bullshit.
Nov. 20, 2008, 10:12 a.m. CST
I have both, PS3 is great as a bluray player and for the odd exclusive, that's it. 360, especially with this new update (the netflix thing is fucking awesome and the library will expand exponentially, it's only day 2 bros, and streaming regular DVD is definitely real quick, haven't tried HD yet) The games are better, the online is MUCH better (for the cost of a single game a year) it's just better. PS3 is okay.
Nov. 20, 2008, 10:44 a.m. CST
I love how PS3's FREE online service (for anyone who has a PS3) is the greatest thing ever and M$ is a bunch of assholes for making us pay for thiers. But when it comes to M$ giving Netflix service (to anyone who has Netflix) for free its all about how the selection sucks and how its not true HD, blah blah blah. I have Netflix already and this is just a nice little gift from Uncle Bill. Thanks Bill.

Ok merrick, i love that you have aicn games but seriously, you need to hire me, or some other gamers to write more articles...you post an article every three months and the first one you chose to post is about NXE? Granted, its good, makes the xbox feel like a whole new system but seriously we've had one of the most abundant months in gaming history..left 4 dead, gears of war, mirrors edge, fable, the list can go on and on...if you want your games articles to be taken seriously you need to deliver actual news...though the netflix portion really plays to the aicn audience...im a gamer and a movie nerd I enjoy your articles on games and movies or I wouldnt be here 6 times a day when I should be working, but the game articles seem half assed and just become flame bate for ps3 vs xbox fanboys rather that discussion about games that we love

I'll enjoy playing superior games, with superior online service (I tell everyone who wants to buy a PS3 when it comes to online gaming that you get what you pay for, which is apt).<br><br>Also, think about it this way, for the 50 dollars we spend on a far superior online gaming experience, that's $50 you idiots have to spend for some decent component cables or an HDMI cable because Sony enjoys fucking you in the ass so much that they package their doorstop with composite cables that are standard definition and 20 year-old tech!<br><br>Again... Bioshock was AWESOME on the 360. Not so much on the PS3. MSG4, when it comes out on the 360, will be far better than it was on the PS3. We have the Halo Series, the Gear Series, the Mass Effect Series, and yes, Oblivion is the most awesome of the awesome and it was better on the 360.<br><br>You stay classy, Sony Zombies!!!
Nov. 20, 2008, 11:43 a.m. CST
Why would anyone going forward buy a PS3? Want a Bluray player...the sell them cheaper now. Want the best games....360 has them. Want the best online service... Xbox Live is the place to be. Want to stream movies... NXE does it. Want the most DLC... Market place has it. Want to save money... 360 is less $. Am I missing something? Sony is on thier way to becoming the next Atari.
Nov. 20, 2008, 12:12 p.m. CST
... you're either an idiot, or a Sony Zombie... because you wasted your time and money in not using the 3 year warranty MS handed out for all of the older 360's.<br><br>As for the failure rate of the 360, while it is high for the first year and half of the system, it's still lower than the all-time high of 1 in 3. Xbox has said that they will be releasing new Avatar items periodically the next 6 months. I dont know if they will free, purchases or a little bit of both. They also said there will be unlockable content (think achievments) so we should be seeing Halo Recon tshirts and such.
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:05 p.m. CST
Really, consumers vote with their wallets huh? So they're buying the 360 because it's got a better online service huh? Well last time I checked, the Wii was kicking the 360's ass that they revised their target goal from 'we're gonna be #1" to "We're gonna sell more units than Sony in this generation." So by your logic, the Wii must have a superior online service to the 360, amirite??? You're talking out of your ass. The only thing that is shit is Microsoft's crappy hardware. And I find nothing to feel proud about to pay $50 a year just for the luxury of a cross game invite... Otherwise the online on PS3 works, I go online, I play, no problems, friends list is there, done! I honestly wouldn't know what else is really that much more necessary, but I'm not much into online...<br><br>Other than that you idiots, for every game one console has there is a comparable game on the other... Xbox space marine WWII army shooter is the same as PS3 space marine WWII army shooter, they both have you shooting at shit, I can't even really tell the difference as far as the gameplay mechanics go... you shoot shit, the end. Of course you got some that look prettier, and so far the PS3 leads, but other than that, it's the same unless you're that anal idiot who cares about what shape the crosshairs ought to be...<br><br> Anyway all this talk about a superior online service or superior games is bullshit and just a matter of taste or a pointless opinion.<br><br> Face it, some of you for some reason are so addicted to having some additional features in your online thingamajing that you're willing to shell out 50 damn dollars for it, the rest couldn't give a shit about those little trinkets and simply want to get online and shoot shit then go do something else and would rather not waste the money on some unnecessary luxuries so a free service with the essentials is more than welcome. For every stupid comparison one may make there's another counter-argument. Take a look at the shit lowman is selling you, I can just as easily go: "Want a blu-ray player and game machine all in one, PS3 is the only way to go, 360 doesn't have that and only has a failed format which would've cost just as much to get. Want wireless built in and controllers that are wireless with lit ion batteries that are rechargable and an HDD in the box? PS3! a 360 will cost you a lot more to upgrade to all that shit. Want to use remote play with your PSP to play PSOne games and other PSN games on the go? 360 doesn't have any such feature, upgrading your 360 to get everything the PS3 does, including playing online will cost you a LOT more. PS3 also has a movie streaming service and it has all of Sony's films, something the 360 doesn't have, and you'd end up paying two bills, one for LIVE and another for Netflixx with a shittier selection. Want to play Killzone 2, MGS4, UnCharted, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank etc. etc. etc. can't do that on 360! Want a better avatar system that is realistic and actually has better customization and other cool shit in a virtual wrld, that's not 360, that's PS3!" See? I can market things too! Holy shit!<br><br>Anyway you know what... there's nothing wrong with the 360's games, additional features or even the online which you can choose to use or not (I wouldn't). However there is simply no excuse for knowingly wasting money on a piece of shit that's guaranteed to fuck up in some way. Were it not for the 360's hardware issues, I'd own one, not for online, but for the single player stuff not available on PS3. I'd buy an Xbox 1 before I throw away money on the 360. Hell I don't mind waiting for Microsoft's next entry providing it fucking works and I'm convinced they won't completely abandon support for their previous outings just because a new kid is on the block. And looking at all the decisions that Microsoft has made so far: To knowingly release shitty hardware on the market in a desperate bid to beat Sony. TO gimp the 360 by having an HDD-less model thus fucking developers over by necessitating that the games keep the HDD-less system in mind. By supporting HD-DVD and bullshitting everyone that it was gonna win, then abandoning ship and now tryig to trick us into believing that DD is gonna take over next week (Oddly enough it's Sony that doing more DD stuff than MS on the PSN). For still insisting I fork over $50 when the PS3 let's me play for free. If MS wants to do something comparable, they can offer a free service on 360 comparable to the PS3 as the silver and let others like Allseeingeye pay $50 for the extra online shit that supposedly makes it sooooo great! Plus the one game I really saw as a must own this generation was MGS4 as I'm a fanboy for the franchise and it is exclusive to Sony. Everyone else can wish and hope and pray to their deities that it gets ported to the 360 but until it happens, it's a pipe dream, and I find it highly amusing whenever 360 jerks love to tell PS3 owners how we only get watered down ports and they themselves don't mind, nay, demand getting a port of a PS3 game watered down, no hi def audio, multiple DVD discs, reduction of graphics, whatever... cut out whatever you want just so long as there's a green 360 game box that has MGS4 on the cover! It's ironic hypocracy at it's best!<br><br> Ahhh... remember the days when 360 was the true gamer's console that only cared about games and not like that shitty HDMI equipped schizophrenic Sony machine that wants to do all kinds of multimedia shit... Movies? Pffft... who needs those? We only care about games motherfucker! Whereever did those purists go? What happened boys? Remember those days when they told us that blu-ray would fail, and that MGS4 and Killzone 2 would look nowhere near those early trailers? Funny... I don't hear much of that anymore... guess all that blu-ray cell processor talk was just smoke and mirrors huh? Sony was just bullshitting us with 'potential' right? Yeah... Now all you're left with is "We're cheaper" and some vague allusions to a supposedly better online service that's worth $50? Well I just want to add friends to a list and go online, play and leave... that's it, and Sony provides that fine, no problems whatsoever, so what is so special on the 360 that I've got to pay 50 annually for when I can spend that on a whole new game? Sure it isn't much if you break it down to how many cent that is a day, hell I could also divide the PS3's price by 365 and it wouldn't seem so bad either now would it? Why nto 'jump in' there too if that logic works for you?
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:21 p.m. CST
You seem really concerned about $50. Hell I pay the 8 bucks a month so I really pay 96 bucks and I would pay double that for what it gets me. Hell I would pay you $50 bucks to shut the fuck up. Are you really that broke?
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:23 p.m. CST
You want people to get a 360 and a standalone blu-ray player... and save money??? Gee, doing the math it seems to come close to the same, except it's far more efficient to buy one box that plays both games and blu-ray movies, and it'll be a box that is profile 2.0 that can update through firmware far into the future for whatever BD-Live features are necessary, being 1 box instead of 2 means it takes up less space, and best of all, it's one of the most reliable and reviewed multimedia machines on the market. Much better than the 360's notorious hardware and an outdated stand alone blu-ray player. Plus online is free and it streams movies too. Netflixx isn't free on the 360, from what I hear you need a gold account too just to use it. So for someone like me who'd never pay for online gaming, this Netflixx feature is useless...
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:29 p.m. CST
But why pay $50 when I get what I want for free? But hey, will you really pay me $50 to shut up??? Awesome!!! Please mail it to me right away... I mean I was gonna leave sometime anyway, and it wouldn't cost you a thing, but now that I know you're a sucker who willing to drop that kind of dough money for something I would've done anyway, I think I'll stick around until you make good on that offer! Put your money where your mouth is lowman! I'll even upgrade my services to say something nice about you, that's definately something Sony wouldn't do!
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:35 p.m. CST
Why would I buy a bluray player? So I can just go by all of my movies again in a few years when they release the next media. Thats why I have Netflex in the first place, so I dont have to buy a new discs. As far as the $50 bucks, I will just send it to Uncle Bill instead and get me some GTA IV DLC. Obama will be sending everybody some cash soon anyway.
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:51 p.m. CST
Okay, I got set-up with NXE immediately: no muss, no fuss. I re-activated my Netflix account, which had been dormant for almost a year, immediately. You need an Xbox Live Gold account and a 1-at-a-time Unlimited Netflix account to DL streaming movies. Cost? $38 for an XBL Gold 13 month subscription from Amazon and $8.99/ month for Netflix. I accessed my Netflix queue with no delays and was able to immediately view movies in my queue. My only complaint: some movies aren't in the correct aspect ratio: "Once Upon a Time in America", a 1:85:1 ratio film, was full-screen, and "Rushmore", originally 2:35:1, was 1:85:1. ("Ratatouille" was correct at 2:35:1, however) When I last looked, it seemed like you could DL all the James Bond films, but I didn't actually try, 'cause I didn't want to buy them. (Not when I can get them in the mail as part of my regular, by-mail Netflix account) I DL'ed GTA IV to my HD and it works perfectly! It's quiet as the grave, which is where the PS3 will be after this X-mas...
Nov. 20, 2008, 1:58 p.m. CST
Yes! Brand new character and story. No price yet, but we have a date! Oh and when I said "full-screen" when talking about the aspect ratio for "Once Upon a Time in America", I meant 4:3, not 1:85:1...
Nov. 20, 2008, 2:02 p.m. CST
Seriously? This said despite the 360 having multiple problems that certain people like to ignore: DVD only (with HD-DVD being a dead technology) - Games like MGS4 are impossible to do on 360 without putting it on 4-5 discs. This isn't something that's going to be LESS of a problem for the system. The games are getting bigger, not smaller. Hardware that's lagging more and more behind Sony - has anyone compared Mirror's Edge on 360 to Sony? DMC4? GTA4? Bioshock's creators *couldn't* put everything into it on 360 that they wanted, so it comes to PS3 as DLC. The only reason why 360 had an advantage in the first place was twofold: time and architecture. They had a year and a half advantage, which is an eternity in this business, and the PS3 was a BASTARD to make games for. I guess they've figured it out, though, because the rule is quickly becoming that games look better on PS3. 360's wireless adapter vs. PS3's built-in wireless - Could someone tell me why the 360's adapter is $100, when, being a Microsoft product, it would be easier to make the system compatible with the adapters on the market rather than creating a proprietary tech? Oh, right, more money. Online - The big myth: "Live is light years beyond PSN! And the interface is SO much better!" If you own both, you know how wrong this is. The amount of online problems on 360 and PS3 are the same: minimal. The interface of the XMB has always seemed more fluid than the blade system, but that could be personal preference. The big difference, yes, is the price. On 360, I'm paying for the privilege of online play. On PS3, I get the same experience for free. Yes, Live had certain features before Sony did, but Sony is catching up on those. The ideas I had impressed upon me about Live ended up being the same experience I had on PSN. And I paid for it. Yes, this always comes up: Inferior Hardware - As in not just Red Rings, but the system burning rings into the discs, games freezing, crashing, etc. This virutally never happens with my PS3. I think I've had a game freeze twice on that. It happens about once a week on my 360, on a good week. The only improvements they've made on this front is actually taking responsibility, and not denying that it happens. The failure rate is still astronomical. Microsoft's actually taking care of a problem reactively! They aren't fixing it before the systems burn up, but they let you send it in! YAY! It seems that the only real advantage that 360 has over PS3 is in Microsoft's specialty: paying for advantages. They pay for exclusivity, they pay for massive advertising above and beyond the other two systems. They're keeping their advantage because of their willingness to dig deep, not because of any inherent advantage in the system or the games, because those advantages are smoke and mirrors. I like both systems. I play both systems. I can't wait for Left 4 Dead to get here. But I don't hold any starry-eyed misconceptions. PS3 is the better system. Hell, the price difference isn't even a deal breaker any more. $50? Wow. I wouldn't even care this much about such a dumb topic to argue about if people didn't follow so blindly on any of the systems. Fuck 360, fuck PS3, play the fucking games and shut up.
Nov. 20, 2008, 2:41 p.m. CST
I knew the NXE would be useful to me - may not have sold without the hype. Sony Zombiedom, here I come...
Nov. 20, 2008, 3:38 p.m. CST
Is it just me, or do the fanboys on both sides seem totally ignorant and lame? Who cares, it's great you think your system is better but really I couldn't give 2 shits about what you have to say. I have an Xbox 360, never have had a problem with it ever since I got it in 2006. I enjoy it, and I am really liking the NXE. I can't speak for PS3, since I never played one, but I like my 360 just fine but I'm not going to get into a fight about it. Both systems are great and both have their flaws. Arguing which is better obviously isn't going to work, because everyone who has a 360 will say that's the best, and everyone who has a PS3 will say that's the best.
Nov. 20, 2008, 3:39 p.m. CST
... is either an idiot, a Sony Plant, or a Sony Zombie.<br><br>Because that worthless (free) service isn't half as good as Live, nor do they have a tenth of the stuff available that Live does.<br><br>Again, you idiot moron Sony Zombies... you get what you pay for... which is just about $0.00.<br><br>Unless you count the price for your overpriced brick, the extra $50.00 you have to spend on a decent HDMI cable or component cables, and then all of the games you convince yourselves don't suck, like Resistance 2.<br><br>HAHAHAHAHA!!!<br><br>Oh, and Johnno sucks Sony's cock after he takes their big dick up his ass for buying shitty games like Resistance 2 and Haze. Hahahaha!!!

have they added HDMI as a default on every 360 console now? last i heard you only got that with the Elite model. mine only came with component but i bought it over a year ago so have they now made every version of the console HDMI? if so thats cool. to those saying PS3 is retarded because you gotta pay an extra 50$ to get the HDMI cable you're forgetting one thing...it also comes with a USB cable, its 2 for 1 baby :P
Nov. 20, 2008, 4:01 p.m. CST
ok.. when is the mod to get around this coming out?
Nov. 20, 2008, 4:37 p.m. CST
So what if the Wii is beating both consoles? - we're not talking about the Wii here but the simple fact you need to mention it reeks of desperation. You're just looking for a point to make in an argument you know you cannot win. You can try and twist it round in your tiny mind but whatever way you look at it, Sony come dead last in any competition. Hardware sales? Last. Software sales? Last. Developers favourite? Last. Profitable? Last. Cost? Last. See a pattern there? <br><br> But since you're eager to talk about online services let's do that. I've played games on PSN and the functionality is worse than shit. In fact, the only people who even remotely think it's a great service are the zombies who have to talk up everything that Sony does; even when it's shit. Every game I've played has been laggy as hell and after sampling Resistance 2, (go look up mediocre in a dictionary and you'll find Resistance), I've decided that they NEED to charge for a service to enable some kind of reliable, universal system that all games can adopt. Their friends system is also crappy. Some games have no voice chat or ridiculous requirements to enable it; Unreal 3 requires you to stop playing to push the D-Pad to talk. Genius!!! The adage "you get what you pay for" is true and yes, consumers do vote with their wallets. That's why there's 11 Million+ paying subscribers to Microsoft's service. The only reason Sony don't charge for their service is because they can't; it's awful.<br><br>But hey, let's not overlook your other gem of insight, this time regarding shooters. To quote you "Xbox space marine WWII army shooter is the same as PS3 space marine WWII army shooter" - Really? That's why all of 360's exclusive shooters have wiped the floor, critically, with Sony's best efforts? Resistance 2 vs Gears of War 2? or Halo 3? Please..try harder.<br><br> Oh and you're deluding yourself if you think for an instant that Killzone 2 looks just like the 2005 E3 render. What am I saying?, we know you're delusional. The game does look nice, I'll give it that. It's just a shame that it's as shitty as the original on PS2.
Nov. 20, 2008, 4:51 p.m. CST
hdmi is standard now, yes. and since hd-dvd is dead it doesn't really matter that much, i tried my 360 through component and vga and hdmi and component is fine since there are so few games that even touch 1080p.
Nov. 20, 2008, 4:55 p.m. CST
since I own both machines I notice the zombies are pretty quiet. Look man, I'm sorry you got screwed spending $400... Again, the PS3 is a helluva BluRay player and if developers could afford to make exclusives for it there would be some amazing games. But it just isn't happening. The 360 is, period, the best games machine on the market. And I fucking hate Microsoft.
Nov. 20, 2008, 5 p.m. CST
Johnno has been the most accurate person here. He states facts, the 360 fanboys throw insults. Whatever. <BR><BR> First, yeah, we're getting Bioshock 2. That's why the teaser trailer for it debuted on the PS3 version. Probably come out for both systems same day.<BR><BR> Anyway, tired of arguing with you losers. Go enjoy all the massive exclusives you have, which I would think you'd be too busy playing to be arguing on a website, but, what do I know? I'm obviously just a zombie. Nevermind the fact that I didn't experience a single bit of lag while playing 60 player online during Resistance 2. Nevermind that I'm actually loading up the 1.00 version of Home as I type this. Nope, I obviously don't know anything if I don't buy into Microsoft's hype machine, so why bother arguing?<BR><BR>If you people are really so concerned as to who ends up in second place this generation, have at it. I'm going to start up Valkyria Chronicles. Strange...I don't recall there being a 360 version. But I thought we had no games. Huh...
Nov. 20, 2008, 5:09 p.m. CST
what shall we rip off today? Microsoft's best products are the ones they developed WITHOUT trying to copy someone else - that includes the DirectXbox, which Nintendo continue to shit all over and sell to markets the others can only dream about breaking into. <p> I guess they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - or at least I'm sure that's the company line, anyway...
Nov. 20, 2008, 5:29 p.m. CST
Wow. Home 1.0 Beta. I'm soooo jealous. A virtual den of mindless zombies where they can all talk about all the great games they have on PS3. Consider me jealous.<br><br> Ohh..Valkyria Chronicles..consider me double jealous :P Lol. What will I play in my extensive list of AAA titles that can beat that? Er....everything :D<br><br> Johnno doesn't know his arse from his elbow. His "points" are the usual crap that Zombies spew based totally on wishful thinking. At least the 360 owners here have addressed your rubbish but you have yet to address the points made to you. I wonder why. Oh that's right, you're in a tizzy to go play Haze.
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:08 p.m. CST
That includes 360, wii, and ps3. I gotta say the XBox 360 just blows them all away in terms of quality games, online experience (wii's is especially horrible), and overall hardware. The PS3 only has 3 good exclusive games (MGS4, Uncharted, and Little Big Planet). 95% of multi-platform games run better on the 360 than the PS3 (ie: Sports games) due to the PS3 having framerate and lighting shadows issues. Xbox 360 is just more fun to play and has WAY more exclusive games. The arcade alone is worth it. The PS3 is a good blu-ray player and MGS4 is awesome, but that's about the only reason to get a PS3. The wii is for little kids and is fun to play when drunk. Wii bowling and Smash Bros. are the only games really worth playing on it. I rarely ever play any other system besides 360 and only turn on my PS3 to watch movies.
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:48 p.m. CST
Been waiting for this update for months if for no other reason than the ability to watch Netflix on-demand. Watched that old Flash Gordon movie from the 80's last night with no problem. Tonight launching Netflix just freezes the Xbox. Several for reboots just produce the same result. I'm also very disappointed that several of the 'watch now' titles aren't available for viewing on the Xbox. Not sure I would have paid for the unlimited Netflix membership or Xbox Live Gold had I known what I know now.
Nov. 20, 2008, 6:49 p.m. CST
Alright, I don't have a PS3, or a 360, as I sit at home content with my PC (and the occasional drunk Wii-gallivant with some mates). Why don't I have a PS3? Simply because I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for Sony to come up with some good games to convince me that buying a PS3 is worth it. But, sadly, at the moment, it just doesn't look to be happening. Aside from MGS4, there is not a single exclusive on the PS3 that appeals to me more than the plethora of 360 exclusives. And as far as LBP goes, I'm sorry, but I still see this as a game for creators, and not players (a notion which is further emphasised by the news that Sony is hacking and slashing at the user-created content!) I'm fucking certainly not going to play Haze or Resistance, because, as a staunch supporter of the PS2, I've tried many-a-FPS using the sony control scheme, and it just doesn't feel right. Every day I inch closer and closer to buying a 360, but the Sony fanboy within me just manages to fight off the urge. ONLY JUST. So to all the PS3 defenders out there who chose the defend the GAMING section of the PS3 GAMING CONSOLE, may I just say: sell it to me! Because I'm having an incredibly hard time coming up with anything positive, game-wise.

Not that I give a shit, but I just read on Yahoo's home page about how much more Energy the PS3 eats compared to the 360 or a stand alone Bluray player. Just funny cuase now the greenies will start hating on you too. Ha!

It's not a question of technical capability or reach of broadband. It's about reliability, tangibility, sharing and all sorts of other things that us "geeks" don't undertand, not being very social creatures, in the main. HINT: Music has far lower technical demands than video for distribution in this way. Does anyone honestly know of any household that has stopped buying CD's completely and only ever listens to streamed music? If not, why not? If not, what makes you think video content will be any different? Every time some new "breakthrough" in streaming/download services is proffered (BY THOSE HOPING TO SKIM SOME $$'$ OFF YOUR HIDES IN THE PROCESS) some people (usually those who are in desperate need of A Clue) think it's the death knell for discs. Those people should remember that - for crying out loud - not only did streaming/downloading fail to kill the CD (sure it had *some* impact) but that DIGITAL failed to kill ANALOG! Despite everyone predicting (and indeed subsequently ANNOUNCing) the death of vinyl at the murderous hands of CD, only to have to back track in recent years. Vinyl not only didn't die, it's actually COMING BACK! Of course it doesn't bother me that those people are wrong, except that it's embarrasing to have to admit being of the same species as those idiot primates that seem intent on ignoring the gift of THOUGHT that evolution endowed them with and toss themselves mewing and baaing over the cliffs behind every pied piper that whistles up a merry tune to lead them on a sad dance. Rant ends.
Nov. 20, 2008, 8:48 p.m. CST
i'm sorry, i work in the music industry, and the CD is on its deathbed. I'm going by hard numbers that execs at major labels see. I prefer discs of all kinds, and hate it when everyone says "screw bluray streaming movies will be here someday". I don't want streaming movies, ever. I want to own the damn thing and play it when and how and where I feel like doing so. Digital distribution of games is inevitable because developers are sick of being chained to publishers who they feel interfere and eat up too much money. And with a system like Steam, piracy is very very hard to pull off due to online authentication.
Nov. 20, 2008, 10:23 p.m. CST
The NXE is now loaded onto my 360. I messed around with a little bit and now that it's there I don't much care anymore.
Nov. 20, 2008, 10:39 p.m. CST
That is some bullshit. It's called 'making money', Sony. Or, in your terms, punish the traitors who didn't buy the Sony hardware. It's like these dumbasses in Congress who want to say "use it or lose it" to the oil companies about their offshore leases. Yes, the offshore leases that the oil companies PAY FOR even when they don't use them b/c there ain't no oil in them thar waters. Just collect the revenue, you friggin' idiots. You're still gonna spend way more than you take in and continue screwing over the population at large (and future generations) but don't be complete morons!
Nov. 21, 2008, 1:29 a.m. CST
A minute ago you were telling everyone how swell it was to get a 360 and a standalone player that was cheaper than the PS3 as if it were a selling point. As for buying all your movies again, it becomes more and mroe apparent that you'd rather spend money on useless endevors. I have a bunch of DVDs, but I'm not bothering to replace them all with blu-ray. PS3 upscales DVDs through HDMI. I'm only buying new films on blu-ray and at the most I might re-buy very few like the Matrix on blu-ray. Otherwise I can't fathom why an yone, unless they have money to burn, would bother to replace their entire DVD collection... this ain't like the days when you couldn't stick your old VHS cassettes into your DVD player. Blu-ray players play and upscale DVD.
Nov. 21, 2008, 1:30 a.m. CST
I don't own Resistence or Haze, not into shooters, hell Killzone 2 is the first shooter I'm actually looking forward to since the original Doom. And again you're up there trumpting LIVE but offer not even one example of why. What makes it better? Explain! What is so necessray to have on LIVE that I'm not getting on PSN for free? So far no one here has even listed one necessary feature that's only available on LIVE that can't be brushed off with a 'm'eh.' Cross game invites??? Whoop de doo... And I spent nowhere near $50 for HD cables. It was about $25. And you can get HDMI cables for a lot cheaper from elsewhere. Again, do any of you that actually own an Xbox actually spend your money wisely? No wonder America's in a recession... And hey since we're totalling numbers with external extras, I'd love to know what you think of the final price of a 360 with an HDD, wireless, and HD-DVD, oh wait, sorry, another stand alone blu-ray player... You ought to love how Microsoft gives you all these cost effective choices... hell didn't this whole NXE update require them to make some HDD deals because those with the HDD-less 360s wouldn' be able to store the new NXE??? They're a real forward thinking company!
Nov. 21, 2008, 1:41 a.m. CST
Now it's "so what about the Wii?" Nice to see that you're on board with Microsoft's shifted focus from being #1 to #2. I bet you're also into posting "SECOND!" on every AICN talkback once you get the chance! Yeah Sony's in last place, pretty great when you've got a 1 year head start with 0 competition to brag about against a latecomer with a mroe expensive pricetag. Using that criteria I think I could win a race with Hussien Bolt too! But alright, you can list that as an achievement while it lasts. So that explains hardware sales... as for software sales, ditto, same reason, more people own a 360 than a PS3. The 360's shooters have wiped the floor with the PS3 ones because a) More people own 360s and b) Microsoft sure knows how to spend money on marketing which is something Sony is indeed sucking at. As for developer's favourite? That's changing, I hear more favorable stuff said about the PS3 nowadays than early on, so your point here is inefficient. Profitable? Considering it's selling at a loss, even if Sony sold more consoles than Microsoft that would account up to an EVEN LARGER LOSS than what they're in now so your point has absolutely no value, especially considering this was for the sake of blu-ray and having achieved that goal, money is watering to them from elsewhere at the cost of its games division. So for Sony as a whole, mission accomplished...<br><br> And how the hell can 'cost' even be considered a point, much less one affixed with the placement of 'last.' Wha? Are you just saying you don't like it? By what criteria is that even making sense? Again the Wii now costs more than a cheaper Xbox 360. So people would rather buy a more expensive underpowered console than your favourite thing in the world. Cost so far ought to be considered with the value, in that space the 360 loses because with all its bells and whistles it costs more! So in that vein, it's comparable to LIVE. You love the extra shit on LIVE enough to pay annually for it. And I love the extra hardware in the PS3 enough to pay for it. And I'd still save more money than you would throughout this generation! But sure let's talk about online services. I don't find it shit at all. Friends list works for me, add friends, find friends, play with them... I've never experienced any of this game breaking lag you mention at all, maybe its your shit connection or maybe you ought to turn your 360 off too so it's not downloading or streaming shit while you're trying to play. It's not a PS3, so remember not to leave it on to often or else you-know-what will happen... I don't use voice chat, I've heard enough horror stories about what that's like on LIVE. And you and your other X-friends in here also clearly display your eloquence. God help me if you didn't have to type... Besides, Voice chat and all that shit is optional to developers, and it seems Sony is going about insisting that developers include that stuff like Voice chat and trophies and other features as a standard in games as of the start of next year as part of their TOS. And they're doing it without having to charge me a cent for it so getting together a universal set of requirements for PS3 games doesn't need some fancy pay-for-it infrastructure. As for these 11 million customers paying for LIVE, of course they do! They've got no friggin' choice if they want to play online and only own a 360 or really want to play a 360 exclusive online!<br><br>As for Killzone 2, sure I could believe you... or I could easily follow the opinions of the entire consensus of gaming websites and users out there that tell me an entirely different story that completely contradicts you, but I guess we'll see. I never really played the first one for more than 5 mins at someone's place before I had to leave. Not much of an FPS guy...<br><br>And as for all these wonderful points you guys have made that've 'yet to be addressed' let's see:<br>1. PSN is shit<br>2. PS3 games are shit<br>3. XMB is shit<br>4. Sony is shit<br>5. Blu-ray is shit, downloading FTW<br>6. Whaaah no Sony movies on Netflixx, whaaaah!<br>7. LOL, we're cheaper<br>8. Sony sucks cock and so apparently do I<br><br>Wow, I must say I really am stumped... I'm absolutely at a loss on how to address these grotesque vaguries... each one a research paper and essay unto themselves... you win boys, you win, add a billion more points to your gamerscore for each of those defining examples!

I think you'll find I didn't. Nor did I say XMB was shit. I love my BluRay movies. I think XMB does its job.<br><br> I do however with the opinions that their games are shit; true. That PSN is shit; true. That you suck cock; very apparent.<br><br> You were the one trying your hardest to shift attention from Sony by talking about MS being second to Wii. You know what? That's fine, I can actually cope with that; I don't care so your "point" is meaningless. Apparently though, you can't cope with Sony being dead last. Get used to it because they're never leaving that position this gen. Oh but wait, you think it's OK that their games suck and that they've priced themselves out of the market for gamers because they've got BluRay out there and they're raking money in from that. WRONG. Sony's profits are down somewhere in the region of 72% as a company. Any gains they've made with PS3 have been wiped out. They've actually shut down 1st party studios and projects to SAVE MONEY. But hey, don't let actual facts stop you from making things up to try and prove a point will you?<br><br> I think you'll find that if Sony had a machine that had a range of good games, good developer support and plenty of things in the pipeline people would think differently; even people in here. Sadly, Sony don't have any of those - they have at best 3 games out currently worth taking the time to play and their list of developers grows smaller by the day. It's their own fault too. Arrogance has led them here, expecting everyone to just buy their product. Kaz Hirai's answer to the critics of the launch price tag was "get another job" - :O. Price is always an issue and now Sony have said they're not going to cut prices their position will be further weakened and developers see that. Even that title of supreme exclusivity, Final Fantasy, has found its way to 360; unimaginable 2 years ago. Let me guess though, that doesn't bother you because "you never cared for Final Fantasy anyway" - that's the usual retort by fanboys ever since the announcement. Lol. Let me guess, you didn't really care about Tekken either which is now coming to 360? The problem is, despite having a legion of idiots who buy anything they put in front of them. PS3 and its games just don't sell well enough. Look at the absolutely bank breaking low sales volumes of PS3 AAA titles. MGS4 shipped, (not sold), 4 million copies - should have been 8 million, no question. Resistance 2 is absolutely getting its ass kicked by reviewers and low sales. Let's compare that to sales of 360's AAA titles of 7 - 8 million units each and general 9/10 scores across the board; this isn't even a competition. Oh but wait, MS have a better PR section don't they; it's not that the games are actually better? :) I guess the same PR company makes people buy more copies of things like GTA4 on 360 too, of course it's nothing to do with the exclusive DLC<br><br> I think you'll find the consensus of opinion is against you here Johnno. The verdict in this talkback alone pretty much gives you a sampling of general. And as for your lame argument that "11 million people have no choice" but to subscribe to live is laughable.

Seriously. The Xbox 360 is worth the purchase price just to play THAT game, alone.
Nov. 21, 2008, 7:27 a.m. CST
I never said that people should buy a 360 and a stand alone Bluray player. What I said was the people who were buying a PS3 as a Bluray player now have a cheaper alternitive. The PS3's biggest advantage was the Bluray player and now it's not that big of a deal now that Walmart has them for @ $200. And thats great that the PS3 upscales your DVD's but will the next great media format player play your Bluray and/or DVD's?

When I used to have only a 360 and a samsung hd upscale dvds always seemed to look better when played on my 360, maybe its my crap hd tv but i couldnt tell the difference between 360 and ps3 with dvd

Well, before work, let me go into each one. You guys are constantly talking about the huge amount of triple-A first party 360 exclusives, but you never actually mention any besides Gears of War 2. Let's not talk about third party games, because most of those are multi-platform. Let's just talk about first party. I hear all sorts of disappoint from Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 owners. Mass Effect, I had fun playing for a bit. Halo 3 is a mediocre FPS, no question about it. The first Gears of War was alright. What other ones are there? There's that racing one, but I hate racing games, so I never played it. Don't give a shit about Banjo Kazooie. What other first party exclusives are you talking about? Perfect Dark Zero? Please.<BR><BR> Over on the PS3 side, I'll come right out and say I hated Resistance 1. I hate Socom. I was a BETA tester for it and I gave up after two days. It was the only PS3 game I've ever played that was plagued by as much lag as AllSeeingEye says. It was shit. Haze, I think did exactly what it set out to do, which was be the PS3's Halo 3. It's a mediocre, overhyped FPS. So, it did it's job. Don't give a shit about Gran Turismo, because I don't like racing games. Heavenly Sword is just alright. So, what does that leave us with?<BR><BR> Well, Uncharted is what Tomb Raider: Underworld wishes it could be. Warhawk is incredibly fun, especially when it's 32 player death matches. It's just fucking insane. Jets shooting at foot soldiers while tanks are trying to knock you out of the air. It's an incredibly experience. Littlebigplanet is so much fucking fun if you like 2D platforming games. I think Sony's advertising of the product has been doing the game a disservice, as it's nowhere near as "kiddie" as they make it. About half-way through, there are some brilliant platforming ideas there, some of which I haven't seen since the old NES days. Plus, the making of your own levels is awesome. There's a big learning curve there, but once you learn what to do, it rules. Siren: Blood Curse is probably the best survival horror game, so far, of this generation. Dead Space is more fun to play, but Siren is way scarier, and Silent Hill: Homecoming doesn't compare to either of those two. The variety of missions, the quality of the graphics, the scare factor. It is an amazing game. Folklore is way better than I thought it would be. The ability to use the powers of every enemy in the game leads to a lot of cool customization, considering the hundreds of different enemies. Resistance 2 won me over, when I played the BETA. The co-op alone makes the game worthwhile. The amount of teamwork required to get past even the first level is something else. Not to mention the 60 player versus mode. No lag, no problems. Just fucking chaos. Have never played Lair, but I'm told once they put in analog control options, it became fun. Wipeout HD is only the second racing game I've ever enjoyed, but I think that has a lot to do with the ability to kill the other racers. Don't give a shit about Hotshots Golf. Ratchet & Clank is another one that I enjoyed more than I thought I would.<BR><BR> Now as for 2009, I don't even know any of the 360 first party exclusives except for some Ninja Gaiden clone and a whole bunch of Halo stuff. For the PS3, you've got White Knight Chronicles (which looks unbelievable), God of War 3, Twisted Metal, Dark Cloud 3, a new game from the makers of Shadow of the Colossus, the Uncharted sequel, Infamous, M.A.G. (which supposedly has 256 people online), Killzone 2, and Heavy Rain, which is probably one of the best looking games ever.<BR><BR> There are some third party exclusives for both systems (dude, if you can't appreciate how amazing Valkyria Chronicles is, just because the main characters aren't steroid-using space marines, I feel bad for you) and a few timed exclusives here and there (Last Remnant, for example), but overall, the third party games are the same. The first party titles, though, Sony is so beyond Microsoft, it's not even funny.<BR><BR> But then again, as Johnno and I have pointed out, your answer to every argument is "Sony sucks," so on with it, I guess.
Nov. 21, 2008, 8:53 a.m. CST
As I pointed out earlier, if you have a good enough P.R. department, you can sell ANYTHING. Microsoft has an amazing P.R. department. Justin Timberlake sells more albums than Celtic Frost by a factor of 5,000/1. Doesn't mean Justin Timberlake is worth listening to.<BR><BR> And as for games like Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy XIII, well, I don't care if they go to 360 AS WELL, because they didn't cancel the PS3 versions. Why didn't they do that? If the 360 is so profitable to make for, why not just make those games exclusives? Because most third parties will not make enough money if they are exclusive to EITHER system. Development costs are so high these days that they can't afford exclusives anymore. They have to reach both markets. I don't care if you get to play Tekken 6, because I get to play it too. I'm not a bitter 360 fanboy who cares about how well the system I bought does. I'm in the "well, if more people get to play it, it's fine" category.<BR><BR>Seriously, this is about videogames. They are supposed to be fun. All I read from you is anger and douchebaggery. I have fun with my PS3 and I barely ever watch blu-ray discs. Instead of trying to attack Sony, maybe you should just concentrate on enjoying the system you do have.
Nov. 21, 2008, 9:01 a.m. CST
If the 360 is such a higher quality product than the PS3, why did it lose almost every month this year in sales UNTIL they dropped the price? Look at the NPD numbers. Up until the price drop, the 360 only beat the PS3 in America in, I believe, April. Otherwise, the PS3 was outselling it. Price drop + better P.R. = better sales. That simple. If Sony lower their price to $299 sometime in the next few months, they'll outsell the 360 again. Guarantee it.
Nov. 21, 2008, 10:04 a.m. CST
..it's lacking when it comes to first party support and not to mention that X360 has the majority of 3rd party support. (IE Left 4 Dead)Sony's machine had everything going for it, but there are not enough exclusives to give them the edge over 360, not to mention 360 has better marketing of their system IMO.<p> And BTW what in the hell happened to the Japanese developers who once pwned the gaming industry? the Americans are kicking their ass with quality stuff like GOW2,Halo2,Mass Effect,Resistance,Dead Space,Fallout,Army of TWO,Etc.<p>The last Asian made game I have was Namco's Soul Calibur 4 and before that, Ninja Gaiden 2.I remember during the 16-32 Bit era, companies like Capcom,Konami,et all dominated the industry, now they are few and far between.Oh wellz, I can always look forward to RE5 and Street Fighter 4.

Not only that we can pit exclusives vs exclusives and unless you are drinking the cool aid you can honelty see that the majority of 360 exclusives are mediocre with the exception of titles like Gears of war, Halo 3, Mass Effect and Fable 2. And We can talk in terms of second party and third party exclusives and it just gets clearer from there. @TheaLLSeeingeye You're really full of it. MGS4 "should" have made 8 million instead of 4? Sony's list of developers is growing smaller. MS title"S" make 8-9 millions EACH. Gta 4 numbers? Lets start with that. GTA4 numbers as far As I can track are 2.1 millon on the PS3 vs 3.4 million on the 360. That couldn't have been because the 360 at the time had an install base that was 2.5 times "larger" on the 360 would it? By that rationale the 360 should have sold 5 million. Which brings us to the subject of MGS4. Which according to konami sold 4.33 units world wide which would have put it ABOVE the sales of MGS3. Quite impressive considering the reported install base of that time was 14 million worldwide. Not only that but the next quarter numbers proved to be the second worst of the year for the PS3. Comparing that to Halo 3 which launched into an install base of 13.4 million and then raised the base by a whopping 4 million within that quarter, says alot more about the install base than it does the actual game. Hell, I care about FF but this is a move that the president insisted on. To try to take a more MP stance for money. They signified that when they redid their tools. Even as such any real FF worth thier salt will get both FFXIII AND FFXIII versus. Which in case you didn't know, most fanboys trying to put a feather in their cap don't, FFXIII versus is still exclusive to the PS3. Resistance 2 getting low reviews? Next thing you are going to say that LBP is a critical mess as well? There are over 8, million+ sellers on the PS3 and of them are exclusive. The arguement that the exclusives do not sell just falls flat on its face. What is worse about that is that you try to inflate Halo 3;s success as if it applies across all 360 titles. That is a lie. The next highest seller is Gears of war at 4.7 million........ and that includes PC sales. For a console that has over 5 million more people in its installed base you would imagine that the titles would sell dramatically higher. That isn't true though the attach rate for the consoles are off by 1 and that is enough to put your comments and others on blast. Also to speak of prices, it is funny how the PS3 ends up outselling the 360 in major territories and then we see a price cut boost sales for the 360. Wait.... does that mean that the price wasn't that reason? Oh it seems so, MS has to pimp the 360 to a different demographic just to give the illusion of an edge. The PS3 was doing fine with the price gap before and that must have scared the suits... and the fanboys got suspiciously silent too. The most ardent of 360 fans are deluded and with the FY 07 AND 08 reports showing the PS3 outselling the 360 worldwide. All I see this as is braying by the 360 fans, hoping that people would think that it is all about quality instead of the year start the 360 had with NO COMPETITION AT ALL. Cry more. It only makes the desperation more obvious.

They've even made a press release to let everyone know that a price drop isn't in their share holders interests. Infact, they've just announced a price INCREASE in the UK.

Picked it up a few days after it came out and made my way through the single player - which was 99% awesome. To anyone else that's played through it, though: was that not the most unsatisfying final boss battle ever?<p> I also like how they gave you unlockables for completing achievements in GoW 1 - nice nod to the people who played the first one.

First of i apologize for getting the BTA4 data wrong. I didn't see T2's report until you mentioned numbers. But I will be careful to point out that with the most up to date numbers, the sales on the PS3 are not a deterrent at all. The only two negative ratio's there would be bioshock, a year late, and rockband, if you are talking about the original the PS3 had an even smaller base at the time and if you are talking about the sequel the 1 month exclusivity that the MS purchased seems to have paid off. But lets dive into the weeks arguement. Resistance: FOM 1st week = 242,258 Todays total = 3.2 million Motorstorm 1st week = 269,059 Todays total = 3.6 million Uncharted 1st week = 136,691 Todays total = 1.96 million Heavenly Sword 1st week = 106,142 Todays total = 1.23 million Ratchet & Clank Future 1st week = 131,382 Todays total = 1.41 million Do you notice a trend? let me point it out for you because the same thing happened last generation between the PS2 and the Xbox and people didn't seem to catch it. The "Killer App" mentality (a term normally used for software and PC titles) edged its way into the console industry riding the coatails of the xbox. But what we see from that is tremendous sales at first then a MASSIVE tapering off of sales and sometimes complete market death until something else spurs interest. The playstation games rarely fall into that. As a matter of fact most of their big sellers fail to sell a million their first month. Titles have legs in their respective market. If you don't believe me......... keep your eyes on the numbers. They seem to have been creating a readable trend yet again in this generation.
Nov. 21, 2008, 6:10 p.m. CST
I gave you a figure for seven weeks of sales from launch for both systems, I'm not a total asshole and want to keep the comparisons fair. I think at the time of Bioshock's launch, 360's user base was around the level of PS3's user base now, if not lower.<br><br>Also worth mentioning is that Resistance 1 couldn't fail to sell well; it was one of a handful of games available at launch and, mediocre as it was, the best shooter on the system for quite a while. Someone wanting an FPS fix was more likely to buy that, even though it was old, instead of say Haze, which was plain awful. Same with Motorstorm.<br><br>Looking at the recent sales trends its undeniable that games sell better on XBOX 360 and that's what developers care about. Who will buy the most games. I'm sorry but sales of 211'000 is pitiful when your customer base is 17 million users strong. LBP should have nailed 1.5 Million at launch. Maybe they didn't advertise it enough but people who own PS3s should at least know about the games coming for it.<br><br>There's an idea amongst a lot of publishers that PS3's sales aren't based on titles to come but the fact that it was the cheapest BR player for 2 years. It'll be interesting to see how those sales cope with the new cheaper stand alone units coming to market.
Nov. 21, 2008, 6:22 p.m. CST
I don't remember seeing adverts for LBP outside of the PSN. To be honest I hated the original resistance. It did more wrong than right and I am not the type of person to settle. I never purchased it. Thankfully R2 is better by leaps and bounds. I think the only PS3 game that really battered down the doors was MGS4. And that title appealed to everyone. I am not to sure that LBP resonated with everyone. I am sure it is going to sell well in the west like sandboxes normally do but I think it could replicate the phenom of MGS4. I don't think MGS4 sold 1.5 at launch. As such its numbers were helped by Japan. LBP (even though cute) is a sandbox without a storyline. Games like that tend not to do well in japan. @Rei-Ginsei Gears was great. The bosses weren't great but they made up for it by haveing great pacing and gameplay.

like years old? or at least months?
