Synopsis and Info Behind "Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists"

------------------------------------------

Here's some major news regarding the upcoming film, "Sinbad: Beyond the
Veil of Mists." As you may know, an company called Pentafour Software &
Exports Ltd. of Bangalore, India is currently in production on a 100%
"motion capture" film. This will be in fact the first full "motion capture"
film ever made. Don't know what "motion capture" is? Motion capture is a
process where the studio uses actual humans
to do the actions of the characters, but instead of having the actor as the
final product, his movements and expressions are captured on computer and
rendered into animated looking characters. The technique has been used
midly in some television shows and commercials, but never to such an
extent.

The big news is that I have the entire plot of the story for ya. No
spoilers, don't worry. The film exists in a mythical kingdom by the ocean
where we meet a princess named Serena (voiced by Jennifer Hale) and Baraka
(Leonard Nemoy). Baraka is dying of malnutrition after a major shipwreck,
so the Princess takes him back to her palace where he meets her father the
kinf, Akron. Just when everyone thinks Baraka is a poor starving fellow, he
turns out to be an evil wizard who had been exiled from an undersea
kingdom. Baraka uses his magical powers to switch places with King Akron
and throwns him in the palace dungeon. The Princess uncovers the truth and
decides to hire Sinbad the sailor (voiced by Brendan Fraser) to travel to
the end of the world to find the ingredients of potion to save her father.

Hope this of good use to you!!!

Stay Tooned,

Sir Moggy of Stay Tooned!

    Qualms about motion capture

    by jab

I don't know if anyone out there would agree with me but I often find motion capture to be a bit unnerving, depending on how it's used. Most motion capture has done well getting the people's _movements_ right, but (as far as I know) what motion capture I've seen in facial expressions leaves something to be desired. Of course the only motion capture I can think of (off the top of my head) are the new Johnny Quest show (I'm not sure if that's still on), which had some snazzy CG bits together with some shitty American animation, and of course the new Voltron show. The issue here is that the people who do the movements often exaggerate their parts, and as well, (and this is especially true with Voltron) their faces look very shitty. Maybe that's just texture issues, I don't know. It will be a while still before you can get me to buy totally CG as live action. Star Wars was nice tho, and Toy Story/Antz/A Bug's Life weren't trying to be something other than animated features. My hopes are currently resting on Final Fantasy, but we can only hope.

    from the land beyond beyond...

Sinbad just isn't the same without Ray Harryhausen. His monsters are the only real reason to watch any of them. Needless to say, the Lou Ferigno take left something to be desired. I met Lou once, and he has an amazingly weak hand grip. He was nice, though, and at least pretended to understand what I was saying.

    Motion Capture again? Groan...

    by biffbolt

I remember my first encounter with motion capture in Bakshi's (godawful) version of _The Lord of the Rings_ (or, at least the first half before he abandoned the project).

Man did I hate it then, though I had friends who admired the effect.

    Regarding Motion Capture

    by zboy

Bakshi's Lord of the Ring was not motion captured, it was rotoscoped (artists painted over the filmed action).
Motion capture is the process of recording motion in 3 dimensions and linking it to a 3D model. As far as motion capturing facial expressions, I recently saw a demo of some new software that did a pretty good job of capturing facial movements. With about 50-100 sensors on the actors face, it looked far better than any facial capture system I've ever seen. It still isn't perfect, though, so hopefully there will be some animators on hand to tweak the flaws that are inevitably associated with any kind of motion capture.
For the record, though, I'm of the opinion that well-done animation ALWAYS looks better than motion capture. MoCap tends to always have subtle imperfections that interfere with the reason for using MoCap in the first place. Not only that, but MoCap is just dull. Think of it this way: you see people walking every single day. When you see a 3D-rendered, motion captured character performing the same old human walk you see every day, it's boring. When that same character is animated, the subtleties of good animation make something as simple as a walk much more interesting. I bet most animators would agree here, but that's a whole other topic altogether. Bottom line: motion capture is an evolving tool that isn't quite there yet, but even if the day comes when MoCap is as perfect as it can be, good animation is always better...

    Sinbad project

    by pilot

Regarding the Sinbad film. News on this project has been few and far between. I'm particularly interested since I worked on it and have heard practically nothing since. I can tell you that the production illustrations were beautifully rendered and would be worth the price of a coffee table book if they were published. The script is fun, it's a popcorn film.

    Blue Planet

    by thekellysisters

I remember reading, from an AICN user no less, that Blue Planet, a movie that I have been waiting for for a while, was done with motion capture. Am I wrong? Is it not done so? Is anyone else looking forward to it?

Sinbad has been around for a LONG time...

    by irie

...and like Blue Planet, will probably be a little flash and no story or character development. YAWN. Not to mention that ALL MOTION CAPTURE SUCKS. It has no character. Why not just ANIMATE it? Motion Capture is the '90's answer to Ralph Bakshi's brand of bad rotoscope. BOring...

    Disney's Sinbad

    by prince of movies

I heard a rumor that a thirteen year old teen has written a screenplay to Sinbad and it's really good from what I've heard! This story is about a poor young man named Sinbad who owns a talioring shop in Baghdad. Sinbad dreams of becoming the greatest sailor that ever sailed the 7 seas. One day, a huge ship pulls in to Baghdad to get some money from the king and send to another city. The captain of the ship is evil and is sheming to assinate the king. His bumbling brother, Red,(Or something like that), goes otu and kidnaps the princess. Sinbad decides to sneak off and join the crew. The captain accepts him and lets him board. When he gets on, the crew throws him in to a room where the princess is held. The two meet and decide to get off the ship. Sinbad finds a box of dynimite and decides to lighte it. He manages to light it somehow (can't remember)the explosion causes the ship to sink. The crew takes a lifeboat with the princess and head to an island where they find out that it's Traesure Islan. Sinbad lands on the same island but a different side of it. There he meets Davy Jones who is the so-called comic relief. He's sort of like the genie but not voiced by Robin Williams. I think he'll be voiced by Ryan Williams. Finding out that the crew is on the island he builds a raft while the crew is getting some treasure. The captain finds the mythical Sword of the Sea and goes back to Baghdad to kill the king. Sinbad quietly follows them along with Davy Jones. When they get to Baghdad, they hold the princess for ransom. If the king gives his kingdom to them he'll let his daughter go. Sinbad manages to get in to the castle and the king gives up his kingdom. Sinbad sneaks up behind the captain and sneka the Sword off of him. He feels Sinbad taking it off and thus results in a huge sword fight between the two. (not saying the end of the fight) The princess and Sinbad marry and he is given a ship of his own. The two sail and go on many adventures after that. How does that sound for a 13 yaer old movie writer? They say this movie will be the best from Disney in next decade if made of course. Movie has not been put in to production. Remember this is just a rumor!!!!! I hope it happens.

    Disney's Sinbad More Info.

    by prince of movies

I forgot to mention this. The Sinbad from Disney will NOT be motion capture! It will be jujst like Disney. Animation with backgrounds. I also heard that the ship sinking while using that new Deep Canvas will be the most awesome part in the movie. It reminds me of Titanic but...better!!!
