Do we have a four minute long AVATAR trailer coming soon?

Published at:  Nov 16, 2008 9:54:36 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We got some word from a spy calling him/her/itself SuperBlade that there are pics online of a stack of boxed Avatar trailers, with a runtime of 3 mins 57 seconds. But don't take SuperBlade's word for it, check it out below:

Holy shit! Four minutes of Avatar! I wonder what the trailer is... If it's on film, it's not going to be 3-D, right? So, the question is how much of that 4 minutes is footage and how much of it is James Cameron... maybe a behind the scenes type thing, with Cameron explaining the technology and the story all Hitchcock style? Or maybe it really is 4 minutes of finished AVATAR footage. Could we be so lucky?

SuperBlade speculated that this was actually for the upcoming Singapore 3-D expo where Cameron is going to be a guest of honor, but I would imagine if that's the case those would be harddrives with Real D 3-D files, not boxes of film. And typically a film box labeled Teaser A isn't a special one-off.

Harry has alerted me that he has an inquiry into Cameron himself, so look out for a confirmation or denial from the Big C... wait, that's not a good nickname, is it? Either way, we'll update you if we hear any word from Mr. Cameron. If anybody else out there has any info on this pic or the Avatar teasers, please drop a line to either me personally or all the editors.

So what do you think? Fake? If not, when will we get to see this baby? THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL? Your thoughts?

that was a behind the scenes type thing showing the tank and the monumental task of filming the movie. I hope this is the same thing, showing the process of making the 3d movie. Even if it is a fake, which i don't think it is, doesn't change the fact that i still can't wait to see this film. I agree with kgerm, even one picture would please me at this point.

I dropped Harry a line about AVATAR trailer pic

    by badwaldo s revenge

A post containing the link to the set of three photos on a photo hosting site was found on IMDb.com message board at Avatar. Looks like it got deleted by an admin. MarketSaw had highlighted this on its blog http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2008/11/avatar-teaser-material-coming-soon-pics.html
If you wanna see what Avatar 3-D CG *might* look like, check out AMD Cinema 2.0 demonstration at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnihU4zCXe8 (Part 1) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5yVjHaJ0PI (Part 2) using stacks of graphic accelerator cards to render every tiny pixel of a photorealistic human figure. Looks cool, though James Cameron's version could be astoundingly life-like in leaps of petaflop for every pixel as advanced computer graphic technology allows by next summer. Render 'em one by one frame in the large warehouse packed with monolith towers of rendering bots, baby!

i just dont understand the hard core love and hard on this movie has gathered. there hasnt been any single type of footage shown at all and yet some think "this will be awesome and fuck your eyeballs" ? what are they basing this on? because of the director? i mean maybe its because i'm not a so called movie geek but until footage is shown, i just dont get how anyone can have any opinion, good or bad. now if there was a bunch of art or even stills released then okay but all i've seen is one picture from a crew tshirt that may or may not be a character from the movie. maybe i'm just a minority in that i dont care who's involved with a movie. i just care whether or not the trailers interest me in seeing it, whether its james cameron or uwe boll. i can understand the excitment if you're a cameron fan because he hasnt made an actual movies in 12yrs but to already have a pre-conceived notion based on nothing but who wrote and directed it? damn. now cue those who cant stand people having a differing opinion and will start to whine. :)

AVATAR will be a leap in SFX on the same level as KING KONG, STAR WARS, and JURASSIC PARK. I don't care how cynical you are, it doesn't matter how much it is hyped, people will remember what theater they were in and who they were with when they first saw AVATAR.

So, this would be PERFECT time to remind them that there is a guy called James Cameroon and he is coming back. He's coming off Titanic, the biggest movie ever... he deserves the biggest hype, EVER.

This is the man who directed Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2, and the biggest movie of all time, and this is his first movie in 12 years, after spending the whole time developing new technology that has guys like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas freaking out. And on top of that, it is an entirely new creation that is not a remake, a sequel, a comic book or television adaptation, or a re-imagining of a classic story. I would buy a $16 ticket to any movie playing, just to see a trailer for this thing in 3-D imax.

I mean, honestly, what can he pull out of the bag thats going to be able to wow fanboys now? Photorealistic CG? Not impressive...However, a photorealistic, can't tell the fucking difference CG human character...But, well, that wasn't in the script, so I guess it might just be a bunch of cartoon aliens running about. Which isn't exciting enough to get me up and out of bed. But yeah, with this directors pedigree, I'm realllly curious.

  • There hasn't been a Quantum leap in computing power lately. It's been the same incremental but rapid progression of more and more complex C.G.I. that there has been for many years now.
Avatar's U.S.P. is it's 3D. Sorry but anyone who thinks there is going to be a completely 100% photorealistic Alien World is probably going to be disappointed.
What they WILL likely see is a C.G. (no doubt extremely well done but not revolutionary) Alien World in 3D and THAT is the difference. The 3D not the effects themselves. I've seen enough of Avatar design concepts to realise he's got some nice bioluminescent Aliens but he had some nice Bioluminescent Aliens in the Abyss.
Cameron had best dial the hype DOWN or have a mindblowing trailer.
Because if Avatar is merely a showcase for New (but welcome) 3D technology then it's in trouble. It needs to be FIRST and FOREMOST a fucking amazing Movie. Until I see otherwise a tech demo simply isn't enough.

it's NOT how cool the sfx tech will be, it's about WHO the man behind the wheel guiding the tech is.

semi truck jumping off the road and onto the water duct, ripley in loader calling the queen "bitch", one bullet shatters t1000 into million pieces, arnold standing still from night to daylight, arnold trying to get his horse off the a 50 story building and onto a pool down below, arnold in harrier jet, heck, arnold in every second of cameron's movies!

of when Final Fantasy Spirits Within came out. It was supposed to be this revolutionary CGI movie, and while it was very well made, it also had a lot of weaknesses, and was a dud at the box office. diehard4 lifted the bridge scene from end of true lies & t-800 bullet barraging t-1000 while he's in driver's seat. ditto the matrix from with the harrier jet and bridge scene(replace lee curtis & arnold with morpheus & neo). the concept of aliens vs marines have been copied to death. avp lifted that 'round smooth cut on steels caused by heatbeam' idea from t800's 1st appearance in t2. and i'm sure some of you notice some other scenes in other films. meanwhile, remind me of one scene cameron has lifted from another movie.

this guy is much imitated and borrow from no one. that is exactly why avatar will f*ck you eyeballs.

    Cameron's been away

    by g100

Away from this kind of Movie for quite some time. And though he has some amazing films in his resume so did Spielberg and Lucas.
And ***SPOILER*** I KNOW the basic plot for Avatar and it isn't radically new I'm afraid. Think Apocalypto with Aliens and you're not too far off. So the plot alone won't make it amazing and the Director won't automatically make it amazing (*cough* Lucas, Spielberg *cough*) and finally the Tech won't automatically make it amazing. The Tech might make it Startling if the 3D is very good but it's not enough by itself.
Cameron HAS to return to Aliens T2 form on this one. The costs have and will be staggering and it needs to be a genuine rock solid incredible Movie that smashes at the Box Office. Not a curiosity amusement park ride. And that's not guaranteed but it IS possible.
I remain hopefull no more than that. But if there is nothing astonishing from the actual Movie on this upcoming trailer, merely a 4 minute "infomercial" on the 3D, then it's not a good sign.
It COULD be amazing but there are no guarantees and the Hype is nothing but blind faith in Cameron and the Technology until we see some of the actual Movie itself to judge how fucked our eyeballs may or may not be.
Because if all we hear for months and months and months is "no footage!" because it can't be appreciated in anything other than 3D then it's pretty fucking clear the Movie is in trouble and can't stand alone without the 3D Tech propping it up.

    @G100:
no guarantee the script you read is the one used to shoot. no guarantee that a script that read bad translate into worse movie(batman begins leaked script is reviewed unfavorably in the net). and lastly, pardon me if i may be so frank since we dont know each other, but i trust cameron's taste in a good script than in yours. ;) and yes, my faiht is blind on this one, but for good reason.

The astounding lack of vision of talkbackers

    by turdontherun

Did someone up above claim that Avatar won't be visually grounbreaking because some gimmicky Final Fantasy movie from years back wasn't? wtf has that got to do with Avatar? That's an absurd thing to say and a complete misunderstanding of what the content/intent of Avatar is and what its use of CG is going to be. This is no mere tech exercise - all this carping and negativity about 3D being a gimmick (it isn't)and the CG not being photoreal (it will be) is all a load of bollocks and completely besides the point -first and foremost this movie will just simply be great storytelling, with engaging characters, astounding action sequences and a strong story. Just like all Cameron's work. That's what I'm looking forward to - the kind of great, perfectly crafted storytelling that you can just get lost in and that sticks with you long after the tech lustre has faded - the kind that big Jim C does so well, and that his inferior imitators like Michael Bay, et al. can not do (and that guys like Spielberg seem to have lost the knack for). We've been missing that in genre film making for a while (LOTR and The Dark Knight being obvious exceptions). The visual effects and 3D only support the experience, and Cameron has made a point of saying so in interviews. Make no mistake, this movie will play extraordinarily well even in 2D or at home. The groundbreaking tech is just the icing on the cake. As for all this talk of over-hype -who gives a flying fuck? If you allow yourself to be taken in by that sort of thing, or if you let that define your movie going experience, then you only have yourself to blame. A movie will live and die on its own merits, and that is all.

I like Cameron and I am looking forward to this movie. I can't agree though that Cameron has "never" borrowed from anyone. There's a bit of 2001 in "The Abyss" such as Ed Harris's face during his descent- similar to Bowman's. I am not saying it's a cheap ripoff like other filmmakers but I just saying he is obviously influenced.

I am looking forward to Avatar because it sounds like an Ursula K. Le Guin novel and the 3D will I think help immerse you in the story similar to the journey of Sam Worthington's character Jake.

I never said the script was bad

    by g100

Try again. I said it wasn't radically NEW. What I read could be excellent IF handled correctly but it could just as easily tip over into a predictable morality tale so it's a story that NEEDS a Director at the top of his game to do so.
And you'll pardon me but I saw what happened to Lucas and Spielberg lately despite some of the greatest back catalogue in Movies and it WASN'T pretty. So I won't be quite so certain Cameron will automatically make another Aliens until I see far more proof.
My point about the 3D Tech is that, by itself, it isn't enough. Not that it's necessarily a gimmick. (after all the 3D could work be astounding and Avatar could still be a Mediocre Movie.)
This HAS to be all about the story and Movie first. The Tech MUST be a servant NOT the master. Pixar's managed to do that pretty well so it's not impossible.
And until I see images then all this talk of photoreal C.G. has been heard for fucking years and remains talk. We aren't talking about a few Dinosaurs or creatures placed into real world footage, we're talking about an ENTIRE WORLD in C.G. and an Alien World at that. Talk is cheap but if the trailer has proof I'll begin to believe some of this ferocious Hype.

    And another thing....

    by turdontherun

What's this about the plot not being radical enough? I suppose it isn't if you look at things in such superficial terms, because most plots, unless they're some bizarre charlie kaufmann-esque thing, aren't. most genre film are 'derivative' and cannibalise or are reminiscent of many sources - at least on the surface. you could say the abyss is just the day the earth stood still crossed with close encounters underwater, that terminator is just an old outer limits episode, aliens use parts of starship troopers (the novel)/the forever war, and that strange days (which cameron wrote) is just michael powell's peeping tom with a futuristic slant. moving away from cameron, the matrix is derivative of ghost in the shell, and raiders of the lost ark is just Bond crossed with 30's serials. But this tells you nothing about the movies themselves -its all about execution and the specifics of what the director/writer puts into it - how all the themes/ story elements come together. and Avatar is topical, superbly executed, and consistent with Cameron's past works in these regards. I'm going to stick my neck out and say that it will be his best movie ever - it certainly has the potential to be. I have no reservations about this film whatsoever - he has never dropped the ball in my eyes, and with so much riding on his 'comeback', I don't think he's going to start now. Unlike Spielberg, who coasts on his talents unless really engaged or with something to prove, Cameron seems to have a perpetually hungry personality. He is constantly driven to push the boundaries. I think he will step up even his outstanding form a level with Avatar.

what plot is "radically new" in any cameron's movie? a killer robot from the future? a spy who lies? men vs aliens?

the details is more important than plot. more importantly this guy knows story structure. whether you like the plot of his weaker films or not, the structure is always tight. this is not something you can always say about spielberg's and lucas's films. the story is what i bank the most for in avatar. sure, they can leak you images, phot-real CG, but without context, wihtout seeing it in motion on the big screen, what's the point? anything look like ass in youtube size screen.

    by pipergates

  • I thought True Lies was somewhat enjoyable if unremarkable spy hokum and Titanic unbelievably overrated melodrama dressed up as spectacle. But that's my opinion, I'm entitled to it, and even saying that much Cameron STILL has a superb track record with Terminator, T2 and Aliens. The Abyss I really liked but it ain't up there with those three.
I already made the point that the Story is one that is heavily dependent on the Director's skill for it's success or failure.
Though If you really think Cameron can do no wrong then there is not much point engaging further as by that definition no matter what anyone else may think of Avatar if you maintain a "Cameron can do no wrong" view then Avatar by that very definition will be another of Cameron's triumphs in your eyes regardless of how it is seen objectively by the rest of the world.
I'll wait till I see proof or something approaching proof. Proof not Hype. Not talk. Not past glories.
And far from being hostile to the idea I think it's about fucking time someone had the balls to do a REAL Alien planet Movie so no-one will be happier than me if he succeeds.
But! I repeat, BUT fdor those who do not think Cameron incapable of error it's NOT a certainty that Cameron is an unstoppable force of Cinema anymore than Lucas was after SW.
    We'll see, won't we ?

    by the milf lover

you answer me with "a complete misunderstanding of what the content/intent of Avatar is and what its use of CG is going to be. Just like all Cameron's work"to which you later add "and Avatar is topical, superbly executed, and consistent with Cameron's past works in these regards"
such a response means you've either seen Avatar to be able to give me such bold statements, or you're just blindly kissing Cameron's ass without really knowing anything about Avatar.
I know the man's resume. It is filled with some great movies, a few overrated ones, and a giant overblown piece of shit by the name of Titanic. But I did like the Dark Angel series that he kinda came up with and let others turn into an enjoyable but ultimately silly show.
I'm not saying Avatar wont be a great, groundbreaking movie. I hope it is. But it could also fail. What I'm saying we've heard many times before about how amazing something will be, only to have it be a huge letdown.

The fact alone that this isn't a remake, sequel, prequel, re-imaging, adaptation, interpretation, or even companion piece but an honest to god Original Concept is enough to have me in the line. It's been so long I was starting to worry there will be no such things as movies in 2025. So if it's actually GOOD then my money was well spent. by turdontherun

First of all, I would say I know everything about Avatar that its possible to know without being part of the production, the industry, or James Cameron himself - ie. I've read the treatment from 1995(as I'm sure some others have), seen every article or interview with Cameron that he's done so far, or even read anything tangentially related to the technology being used. I'm also well acquainted with anything he's done in the past and the type of filmmaker/ personality he is. I know in a fair amount of detail what the film is about and what its intentions are (I am unclear if everybody else does or they just know its a sci fi movie in 3D, some vague plot, and little more). So, of course, its just my opinion, but grounded in fact, and based on my personal feelings towards his work. no, I am not kissing his ass, but if I'll be honest, he has never let me down - and that includes Titanic, which I guarantee the main reason it gets trashed here, and of course this doesn't necessarily go for everyone, is simply because its a period film, with romance/melodrama aspects, and not a genre film. you know damn well that's sometimes the depth of thinking/ critical analysis on this site. but that is merely subjective. The point is, Cameron isn't someone who just churns them out, such as Spielberg. He puts everything he has into his films, and since I rate all his past works quite highly, and barring a huge dip in form or extreme rustiness from his long absence behind the camera, this sort of suggest by definition that Avatar will be at worst damn good and at best, revelatory. I reckon all of his small output has been fairly consistent - there have been no significant dips or troughs IMO unlike people such as, for example, Spielberg or Ridley Scott(which of course doesn't mean that he has some films that aren't better than others). so no, he is not beyond reproach, incapable of error (obviously his movie have flaws the same as everybody else), or his films blindly accepted by me, but I just can not see this going tits up, particularly when the story is as solid as any of his others and the time and work invested lengthy and painstaking.

    Hype is not the technology...

    by onezeroone

but James Cameroon, who first and foremost is a writer director who has great stories to tell and knows how to tell great stories in a way that makes them awesome stories.
Remember Phantom Menance? Hype wasn't the new technology to make realistic and highly lush detailed worlds, but the the Saga it was suppsoed to tell. Only time wil ltell if JC does a Lucas, but then, Lucas been resting on his SW laurels while James has done original one offs like True Lies and Titanic.
And ricalite... Avatar may not be new Star Wars... but know what, new Star Wars *sucked* big time. How many kids of today are into Star Wars like the ones who were when originals came out?
More than anything else.. as many pointed out, how many original non-sequel, non-comic or TV or book based movies are you looking forward to? Original Oscar baits are also hard to come by, most are adaptations nowadays. Am hyped to see an original creative work, technology... they won't even have an I-max where I'll see it, so won't matter to me.

You guys spoofing all over your keyboard in anticipation are pathetic - have you learned nothing from Phantom Menace, or King Kong? are much better than gladiator, indiana jones4, the matrix sequels, 3 new star wars films. those films were made later and by just as big a name as cameron's.

i'm not saying he can't do no wrong, just that so far... he has not. even his weaker films are head and shoulder stronger than other big name directors' recent outings. that alone gives me reason to believe.

you want to see proof? like what, a promo shot? an alien world's design? without context anything is meaningless. the only solid proof will be the finished film itself.

    by jimbocop

Cameron's given so much to the genre, that any movie he makes would be an event and that's before he throws a brand new type of visual medium into the mix. Titanic and True Lies are the weakest entries on his CV (that's including "Pirahnas 2") and you know you'll still be glued to them if you find them on TV. There's only 3 things for sure about AVATAR: 1) The production design alone will be worth your $10 2) It will be about ½hour too long 3) The inevitable director's cut 4 disc blu-ray will be awesome. That is all.

I personally thought the 10 bucks I paid for watching the Final Fantasy movie at the theater was the best spent money ever. I left the cinema on a high, hoping more chapters would be made about A. Ross and the fellas. The problem with that movie was, the target crowd for that are guys that never go to the movies, but download and rip them. It probably did well on DVD though, but that really was a movie best seen on a big screen with a great sound-system.

is because he's a fucking genius who's films deliver EVERY time. True Lies and Titanic are "weak" in comparison to Terminator, T2, Aliens or The Abyss. 99% of the talentless shitheads that call themselves "directors" would gladly hand over their left nut to have one of their "weak" films also be the highest grossing film of all time. You may not like it, but a billion box office bucks worth of other people did. He's spent a decade developing technology for this film. It is the first film since Fight Club that I am REALLY fucking excited to see. Avatar... Fucking your eyeballs... December 2009.

But to me anyone who posts on A.I.C.N (or wherever else) that because he likes a movie from a movie director so much that he wouldn't mind sucking his dick and swallow his cum, well, to me that reads as a love-ode to sperm and dicks in general, so I threw Boll and Sommers in the mix, as after all, this is A.I.C.N. you posted that wild fantasy of yours in. Anyhoo, maybe uncle Harry can get you in contact with James and set up that special meeting for you. If Cameron refuses because you're not his type, try Joel Schumacher, he loves 14 year old kids and certainly won't say no to your offer.

This is only perceived as "overhyped"...

    by doctorwho?

...by people like us who actually know about it. The vast majority of people who go to movies have no clue about this film being made and what Cameron is trying to do.
Actually neither do many of the posters here who seem to think it is going to be another CG movie. This is going to seamlessly blend and combine a few different technologies in order to create something new...not to mention the augmentaion of the very theatres we see it in.
True Lies hold up great and I forgot how well Cameron does action. However edits his action scenes is impeccable.

If the technology is groundbreaking and we've got a director who knows exactly what he wants to do with it (and he usually gets his way), how do you know we won't see something we haven't seen before?Sounds like folks are concentrating too much on what may or may not be the quality of the CGI versus what Cameron intends to do with it. Given the guy's penchant for huge set pieces and so forth, I'm willing to bet we'll see something surprising.

    by dannyglovers_dickblood

...how people have already decided this is an amazing film. I've never seen such bullshit hype before in my life. Even with Phantom Menace there was not nearly as much certainty. People were saying they HOPE its as good as the originals. Here people don't even have to see a frame of footage, they are just absolute this is genius work. That is fucking stupid in my opinion.

Well, I certainly haven't already decided that AVATAR is an amazing film. However, I am interested in seeing what it is that Cameron has planned. Considering everything we've read on what he intends to do with the technology, I would think that most folks would want to catch a glimpse of what he's been up to. I think the "hype" is as simple as that.

The reason why people only had "hope" that Phantom Menace would be as good as the originals is because they didn't have confidence in Lucas. Cameron has earned more faith and good will towards his films than Lucas did. Plus Cameron isn't plundering the past. So that, and the fact other filmmakers are stating Avatar will be groundbreaking all lead me to believe that Avatar will be genius. But you are correct in that we won't know until we see it. The problem is, we STILL have to wait 13 months to find out!

This is the only movie (except for The Road) that I give a shit about in 2009. The Watchmen will be decent, but probably ruined by the totally changed ending that won't make any sense in relation to the comic. This is a fucking James Cameron movie we're talking about here! At the very least it will be a good blockbuster. And that's at the least. So we're in for some fun definitely.

Can I just say though, that when people bang on about Cameron only making "original" films they IS WRONG. "Battle Beyond the Stars" REMAKE. "Pirahna 2" SEQUEL. "The Terminator" STORY RIPPED OFF HARLAN ELLISON AND HE HAD TO ADMIT IT. "Rambo: Firsr Blood II" SEQUEL. "Aliens" SEQUEL. "The Abyss" OKAY. YOU GOT ME. "T2" SEQUEL. "True Lies" REMAKE. "Titanic" REMAKE. That is all.

Alien/s: The two films are nothing alike. T2: was a sequel to his own film. True Lies: was a french film from which he took inspiration. Titanic: A "remake" of an actual event. So Apollo 13 is a remake? You failed to mention Strange Days, which had one of the most original concepts of the 90's. But ultimately, his films "feel" original, even if the concept is not. Because he's a great storyteller and creates interesting characters.

i love how you clueless nutcases are dissing on this film. just because it's considered "weaker" to his other films doesnt make it a weak film. the film proves that cameron is funnier than the farrelys, apatow, stiller and sandler combined. has arnold ever been funnier and cooler at the same time? did you see the horse sequence? the harrier jet sequence? the bridge sequence? the first matrix, mission impossible 3, die hard 4, these movies have sequences lifted straight from true lies. you think a "weak" film can be that much imitated?

It's understandable that you don't like Star Wars because of the endless merchandising, its gotten totally out of hand since 1997. BTW Raiders came out in 81, 4 years after Star Wars. Raiders is a masterpiece but, remember, it's Lucas' baby too. The best thing I ever read about Raiders was a review from Time when the film originally opened: "Yet so strong is the imagery, so compelling the pace, so sharply defined are the characters, that one leaves the Lost Ark with the feeling that, like the best films of childhood, it will take up permanent residence in memory."

Your senses will feel like they were beast fucked from Cameron's cinematic cock.

I want someone to video tape people walking out of the IMAX 3D version and posting it on line. They're all gonna be basket cases. They will look like zombies. They won't even be able to drive home.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Sorry but no.
Nobody gets a free fucking ride. Until ANY poster can tell me they have SEEN even a frame of Avatar this is still all just so much amusing hype.
For the record I haven't said it will be shit, mediocre, pretty good or awesome. BECAUSE WE SIMPLY DON'T FUCKING KNOW YET.
I HOPE it will be amazing but I'm not stupid enough to be certain about it without any proof.
"But he's made some great Movies in the past ?" Yeah, SOME. But if you think Titanic was worth 11 Oscars and it's only one or two people who thought it was ludicrously overrated then you truly are well ensconsed in a bubble of Cameron worship. (The Brits actually had a poll which voted it the WORST Movie of all time but what would they know about period drama ?) But what about Aliens ? Yeah, no question one of the truly great science fiction Movies ever made. But take away the Giger design and Stan Winston and what do you have ? Not to mention the fact that it's ALIEN that is the most groundbreaking and gamechanging Moviewise. Which brings me too...
"You just don't understand the Technology or what Cameron intends, this isn't just a C.G. Movie."
Yeah right. Clearly, having reservations means you couldn't possibly grasp that Cameron is trying to introduce a paradigm shift that links into the whole idea of Avatar. To take the viewer of the Movie INto another level of Movie experience by plunging the viewer into the 3D world of the Aliens thus enabling a completely new level of immersion and (tying in with the plot of the Movie) EMPATHY with the Aliens. And having the IMPACT of a New Alien World again truly floor the viewer by this transition into an equally new (you could say "alien") 3D experience for the average Moviegoer.
It's the same paradigm shift that Wizard of Oz went for by switching to color for Oz. The same paradigm shift that some very clever plot twists achieve (6th sense, usual suspects etc.) causing a re-evaluation of all that has gone before. The same paradigm shift that you see in such beautifull little Movies like "The Navigator" when they emerge from 14th century England into the 20th Century (and we are shocked into viewing our current world in a hugely different light) And the same paradigm shift that is achieved in Apocalypto (which is also why I fucking mentioned it) when we see the Conquistadors as something truly startling (like that natives do) after being immersed in a culture that is Historically totally alien to us.
So thanks for the patronizing bullshit, nut no thanks. I know full well what Cameron is TRYING to do and I genuinely admire not only the fact that this is an original Movie but the IDEA behind this Movie and the PURPOSE of the Technology of the 3D.
Problem is it's going to live or die on it's C.G. and design. Yeah, I of course know it isn't a wholly C.G. Movie and I know the radical new way the Movie has been shot to include the human actors and director in a fully immersive 3D C.G. World along with the great pains he seems to be taking to ground the C.G. in "physical" actions and scenes. But there is unquestionably a HUGE amount of C.G. in this Movie.
So that C.G. is going to have to blow people away. It's going to have to be fucking amazong. No two ways about that.
IF (worst case scenario) Avatar ends up looking like a far higher more detailed rendering of Abyss type Aliens with a few Alien plants and trees then it's only the 3D Tech that will be fucking anyones eyeballs briefly NOT the Movie.
BUT if Cameron has truly taken on the task of an ENTIRE Alien World with living breathing Aliens that are more lifelike than anything we have ever seen before AND he pulls it off with a Movie that achieves it's paradigm shift Technically and Emotionally then I'lll be the first to lavish gushing praise on the guy and conider my eyeballs AND mind well and truly fucked.
So again despite ALL the Hype evident her and despite all the Cameron worship, I'll wait till I see PROOF before I get so amusingly excitable about Avatar. Not words. Proof.

other than praise or shitcan flicks we haven't seen? Yes, well done, you're correct, no one has seen Avatar. And yes, the CG will be innovative. But, correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't story and character be placed above CG? It's kind of important to the success of a film. As for the british taste in films, its worth SHIT! A recent poll listed The Dark Knight, Return of the King, Sin City and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the Top 20 of ALL TIME! And Empire Strikes Back was number 1. They are a fucking joke. by dirtsandwich

WHY? Because it might suck horse cock. The characters might be blah, that "who gives a shit" feeling. That's not what I'm talking about. I personally think the story will be strong, not fantastic but it's the presentation that's going to make to creme your pants.

I'm confident that the photo realistic performance capture in HD 3D will be like nothing seen before. Even JC said early on that he didn't know how good the movie would be but that you would see some truly mind blowing things on screen.

JC is giving us 2 things and trying to keep cinema from tanking. A new fresh original story, a space epic which are few and between. Sunshine was blah!, Also creating hardware and techniques for filming movies that will pave the way for others. This movie is and will continue to break down doors. This is a serious kick to the sack for home theaters. You will not be able to come close to the IMAX 3D experience at home. I don't care what kind of set up you have. 3D will arrive at home but not for a while and to where it's affordable.

  • That would be another one of my points you see.
Many people are clearly basing a lot of this faith in Avatar in the Technology deployed. My repsponse being the Technology HAS to include mindblowing C.G. if the Technology is truly the gamechanger here. So where is it ?
I've already said (twice I think) the basic plot outline (story) COULD be very good indeed IF handled correctly but it could also topple into a fairly trite "human exploitation" black and white morality tale if Cameron is not carefull.
But lets face it we know far, FAR less about how the characters are portrayed and minutia of the plot than we do about the Technology. Yet some here are making some pretty fucking incredible and certain predictions for Avatar regardless.
I cetainly don't think Titanic is the worst Movie of all time myself, however it's up there as one of the most overrated in my book and that's hardly an unusual opinion either.
I don't mind speculation as I have added some myself along with what seems (to me anyway) to be Camerons aim for all this technology but we REALLY don't know a fucking thing about this yet. One or two concept sketches and a script treatment (that may or may not be accurate) ain't enough for this level of Hype and certaintly and blind faith in my book.
    But we'll see, won't we.

    by dirtsandwich

his doesn't look like that. He said that. I'm sure they are somewhat similar.

What do you mean by where is it?

JC and his brother and some PACE dude invented these cameras. Also the photo realistic performance capture is an improvement over anything else. It hasn't been done like this before. Even Battle Angel will look better then Avatar because of even more improvements and corrected mistakes learned from this go around. IMAX is inventing both a quieter camera and going all digital. And keep in mind that the only 3D teasers, trailers of Avatar will be watchable before a 3D film.

The Day the Earth Stood Still could show a teaser but Earth/Still is not 3D. Bloodly Valentine will be 3D. And some of these might not be IMAX. So the they will have to pick which movie to place it with to really capture a true taste for it in IMAX 3D. I highly doubt that they are going to give you glasses just for a trailer, if the movie is 2D.

Cameron can fuck our eyeballs all he wants...

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

but if he doesn't have story and character then it will just be a fucking 2 1/2 hour showreel. We all saw The Phantom Menace. The movie sucked ass but it sure was purty to look at. I'm certain Avatar won't have the same issue, purely because I have faith in his storytelling ability. But IMO, Cameron hasn't spent 10 years of creating technology to "save cinema" or anything grandiose such as that. He's done it to aid his storytelling. He believes 3D will do that, so he's worked on the technology. Ultimately, its the story and characters we connect with. Everything else is an aid to serve that purpose. Hopefully, in 2009, Avatar will be fucking not only our eyeballs, but our minds and hearts as well! Hurry the fuck up December 2009!

    by sackratte

if the pic is real this are of course teasers. I bet Cameron did something like the T2 promo with Arnie. A complete new scene where we can see an Avatar in action for example... nothing which will be in the final movie like the 'building a Terminator' scene of T2.

I would do it exactly like this!

Those examples of The Wizard Of Oz Apocalypto etc are not paradigm shifts in anything...merely different approaches within the medium.
What Cameron is shooting for here is to widen the parameters...to actually fuck with the medium itself and expand the medium a little wider.
It's more akin to when IMAX first came out...it was about advancing the technology in order to serve the story better.

    by dirtsandwich

that without a good story it's just eye candy, but JC is smarter then that. Look at the colorful characters and dialogue in Aliens and The Abyss.

Everything I've read including the 80 page treatment that he said he has modified anyways, points to a killer story. I have issues but they are most about what will the world be like in 100 years, when this story takes place. I don't think we'll be disappointed. I think it include a love story, this could go either way. Totally chesseball sap fest, or totally cool with a lot of heart, which will play to the motive for Jake to fight for the Nav'i. There's no reason to believe that this movie will have any less of a story then any other JC film. Maybe even more so.

This will be a game changer,

    by dirtsandwich

movies won't be the same. Even disaster brainwashed Roland Emmerich will have to convert over to this type of 3D. Some studios might demand certain types to be filmed like Avatar. Like adventure films, pissing off directors because they won't know what the fuck they are doing.

  • Nov 17, 2008 3:26:56 PM CST

NO they are paradigm shifts in storytelling

    by g100

And the Wizard of Oz tried to match that with it's shift from BW to color. (Navigator did the same too I think) Which, when color was introduced in Movies, WAS a massive paradigm shift equall to talkies.
I've already outlined how Avatar is most likely to try and align the technical paradigm shift with the story. Whether he succeeds or not depends on his skill with the story and characters.
And "where is it ?" refers to the C.G (or C.G.I) (or indeed ANYTHING of the actuall Movie) Because 3D or not it's still going to have to be mindblowing even when viewed in the 2D format. Sure it's going to have less impact than it's true 3D form but weak 3 Dimensional C.G. is still weak C.G. and likewise mindblowing 3D C.G. will still be be fairly easy to spot as amazing when viewed in the 2D form.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Yes. Cameron wants the idiom to evolve. And of course, make a good movie in the process.
These are things that transcend any storytelling devices (no matter how cool) seen in Sixth Sense or Apocalypto.

    by g100

If you're point is, this is a worthy Technology in general that Movies should be taking and directors supporting, then I agree and point you to my first post where I acknowledged as much when I said the Technology was new but welcome.
So yeah, bring on the 3D by all means. But this is a HUGE opportunity to USE the 3D in concert with the storytelling to make the impact THAT much greater (since the 3D tech is almost completely new to the general public) and it's why Cameron is doing Avatar and not any other Movie first in the format. (IMO)

The only reason to dislike Cameron

    by skimn

He gave Tom Arnold the notion he could be a movie star.True Lies did weave from cool Bond stuff, to weak comedy (I'd call it Bill Paxtons worse role in his career), to good comedy, to doomsday thriller, romantic comedy, hostage drama and back again. But with all the current talk of Bond/Bourne fight scenes, look at the men's room fight in True Lies. It is brilliant. And Jamie Lee in a little black dress? Priceless.I agree with the poster that said Cameron puts the bucks on the screen. And he is always pushing the envelope in tech and effects. CGI wouldn't be where it is today without The Abyss and T2 paving the way.

    2) Everyone is focused on the 3D eye-fucking that might happen with "Avatar." This works for me, because no one's discussing the story. A trailer will arrive, I have no doubt, but I'm more interested in the drama than the visuals. Am I going to be moved and floored by Cameron's story?

    OK changing the subject... Terminator

    by murdermostfowl

Anyone see the latest Terminator Episode? I thought though there was some hamfisted dialog, the key plot point was brilliant.
The writing on that show is so far beyond face value.

SPOILERS don't read any further You have been warned.

I didn't catch on to who the younger guy was even after we see the birthmarks, it was soon after when they were looking eye to eye that I realized it. I loved it.. the confusion of that scene all brought to clarity in a glance.
Then in the end Charles Fisher was so devious that not only was he an awesome lier, he willingly and easily uses his own past self as a scapegoat. brilliant ending.

This show isn't shakespeare, and it's not BSG, but I am routinely surprised at how solid the writing is and how much sincere plot depth we're getting from a show that at first looked like it could easily slide through endless action sequences like 24, or have ridiculous plot delay devices like lost or prison break.

Anyone else have any comments? :)

Cameron is needed ladies and gentlemen

    by johnno

What Avatar promises is an event that makes theatres relevant again, and for that to happen theatres must offer an experience you can't get at home through your fancy HDTVs and digital surround sound. It'll make renting and illegal downloading seem lke a joke, and the only logical next step is 3D, and eventually 3D without the requirement for glasses but with depth of field right up there on the screen! 3D is the future and the industry seems to be pinning its hopes on Avatar to take us there. And simply on that aone I'm excited! Given Cameron's reputation we can safely assume that the story and characters will be solid enough. There's no point going over that, the biggest draw is indeed the 3D and digital trickery. That's what's got us so excited and we can't wait to witness this for ourselves! So stop trying to ruin the hope bandwagoning party! It's fun to get prematurely excited about things, if you're not interested then go find a thread about something you're interested in and hang out there.

JC will become the second coming

    by dirtsandwich

to the theater executives. He will be the leader for them in battling a sagging industry. It doesn't matter that Avatar will or will not be a fantastically told story. It'll be the movie to set the stage for other film makers to go ok, lets do this. It's a perfect movie to show and push the limits of what can be done. And is the project JC wants to see on screen. Not some cookie cutter, formulaic, Roland Emmerich bore flic.

JC will be the hero like Goldblum was in ID4. No one knew how to combat the aliens. Well no one knows how to compete with home theater and piracy. JC does. So even if this type of story doesn't attract the masses and doesn't make billions, it'll attract the entire film industry. And that's more important. Because a large percentage of movies in the near future will have dazzling presentations like Avatar that home theaters can't deliver. Avatar will coast on the techno side at the Oscars and maybe in other catagories, like editing, sound, score (James Horner I hope), screenplay, director, acting etc. And maybe even Avatar will create a new category at the Oscars . And the "best eyeball fuck" goes to...Avatar.

Eventually home theater will catch on with the whole 3D thing. It's already out there. There's just not enough material and consumer sales for a production company to release it's movie in 3D. Like Monster House, Journey/Earth, or U2-3D.

They'll have to sell a Blu-Ray 3D player. That's if by then Blu-Ray is the leading format. Something new is always around the corner. So it'll be a awhile for it to all come together.
