Ms. H Takes On THE SPIRIT!!

Merrick here...
Ms. H got a look at Frank Miller's SPIRIT adaptation, which hits theaters on Christmas Day. Hearing some lackluster word on this one - Ms. H's message pretty much supports those assessments. ANd, yes, I know the blue highlight box around the review is ginormous...can't seem to shrink it down for some reason.
Saw The Spirit and thought I'd give you some feedback. It's been a while since I've been so ambivalent about a film. I loved Sin City - the whole look/feel/atmosphere so I was extremely excited when the lights dimmed and The Spirit started. Damn. Some of the dialogue is apalling - I don't know if it's Macht's delivery but within the first few minutes I was cringing in my seat. OK, I said to myself, relax, it looks quite atmospheric - the bad guy is causing havoc and our intrepdid hero will go to the rescue. Until The Spirit started running/jumping from building to building. OK, OK, I know the guy has risen from the dead and has unique abilities but the effects were plain sloppy. When you see the sequence you'll know what I'm talking about. Macht is very nice eye candy (ladies, he takes off his shirt a few times and let's just say - wrooorwwww) But I digress. Samuel chews the scenery as Octopus - I don't know yet if it's in a good way or a bad way. At least it looks as if he enjoyed himself, especially when strutting around in a Nazi uniform. Eva Mendes vamps her way through the film (at least a Hollywood star who has curves and doesn't look like a lollipop), and the same goes for Scarlett who plays a henchperson of the bad guy. SPOILERS She's supposed to be brainy etc etc but cat lovers turn your head since she ends up doing a horrible experiment on a little kitten which ends up as mush ... with eyeballs being the only part left, slowly rolling in the drain. Octopus has cloned henchmen who are seemingly indestructible and extremely jolly all the time, despite getting shot/impaled/disposed of by The Spirit and one of them getting driven over by a touchy Scarlett - you get the picture. Through some weird experiment one gets 'remade' as a foot with a head on top of it. I kid you not. And the darn thing keeps jumping up and down on the table in front of a rather bemused Octopus going 'wheeeee' until it falls into a blender and ends up as a vampire smoothy. SPOILERS END I must confess I don't know the graphic novels so I cannot compare the film to them. The Spirit has to deal with the siren call of Lorelei who wants him to cross over into the next world (that's the impression I get - not sure if it's the same in the novels), as well as the women he seduces in this world. Final impressions: some elements of the film I really liked, but equally, there were other things which made me want to slap someone for having wasted the opportunity with bad, bad dialogue, sloppy effects and a general blahness in the character. I honestly don't know what the reaction of fans of the graphic novels will be so, rather judge for yourself. If you use this, call me Ms H.

Sounds like the word of mouth that kept me from seeing the Avengers way back. Not that that movie is everyone's cup of tea but I liked it well enough. This could still be mind numbingly awful though.

I don't care about The Spirit, but Frank Miller has contributed some great comics/graphic novels to us....too bad to see him fall short with his passion project.

    I never read the Spirit...

...but this doesn't sound like the Will Eisner I know. There's adapting, and there's appropriating. Why not make an original character, instead of name-checking the Shakespeare of graphic novels and then making vampire margheritas?

    One trick pony

by My friends call me Killjoy

Miller just goes round and round like a record on this hard boiled, highly stylized bullshit. It's nice as a change of pace (like Sin City the movie), but as a recurring motif in one's's boring.

    None of this shit ...

    by DennisMM

happens in the comic. "The Spirit" sometimes had fantasy or science-fiction elements, but it was not about black Nazis in fur coats or women turning kittens into mush. Neither did The Spirit run around seducing women; they went after him. Neither did he have special abilities like jumping between buildings and sliding down nearly vertical cables, having "come back from the dead." If he had any special ability it would be his ability to stand a brutal beating. Except for the earliest installments, "The Spirit" was an often light-hearted but very human and genuine adventure strip. (It was NOT a graphic novel; it appeared in a comic-book-sized Sunday newspaper insert known as "The Spirit Section." The stories were largely standalone. Repeat, NOT a graphic novel.)

    Blame that hack Robert Rodriguez.....

...who the fuck would listen to that fuck and allow Frank Miller to direct? Uhhhhh yeah. Take advice from a talentless hack like Rodriguez, open the door for Frank to direct and here's what you get folks-- THE SPIRIT!!

    by DennisMM

He did not come back from the dead, but he was presumed dead after having been put into a sort of brief suspended animation by a strange villain's scheme. They put him into a crypt and most everyone thought he was dead. Then he put on the mask and started running around as The Spirit because he found it convenient for everyone to *still* think Denny Colt was dead. The mask didn't fool many people, though.

which will not be fucking anyone's eyeballs in 2009. It won't even be dry humping them....

  • Frank Miller swears his love for Will Eisner ... but this movie has little to do with Eisner except for character names. It DOES have everything to do with Frank Miller and his ego. I have Eisner's Spirit Archives. Do you Frank? Didja open or refer to them once when you started your homage to .. Eisner? I'm not sure what Miller is up to with this film. I thought the big F-U he gives to his publisher and fans by the abysmal work he did on DK2 and does on All-Star Batman was so nobody would ask him to write Batman ever again. I guess he's doing this Spirit movie so nobody asks him to direct again.

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 2:23 p.m. CST

should have just done sin city 2...

    by Charlie_Allnut

And I think the look of Sin City and 300 worked for those specific movies but should not be transplanted onto other films. It was original then but its not now...its just copycat sloppy filmmaking like all the "bullet time" rip offs after The Matrix came out.

...he could be a director. Seriously what the fuck? Frank let Hollywood suck his cock and then he got a hard for fucking all the actresses in his movie. i honestly believe thats the only reason he made this movie. To fuck eva mendes, which he obviously did cause they were making googly eyes at eachother at the comic con panel in NYC earlier this year that I attended.

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 2:44 p.m. CST

    Comic book

    by Thunderbolt Ross

I've read a few of The Spirit comic books, though it was quite a few years ago. My impression from the trailer is the movie is nothing like those books I read.<p>Frank Miller used to be fantastic. I don't like to be one of those "their earlier stuff is better" types but in this case it's too true. I still thinkThe Dark Knight Returns saved comics (temporarily at least), and though flawed is the best superhero comic of its era.(Yes better than Watchmen which is beautifully crafted but lacks kineticism, a pillar - hell, THE pillar - of superhero comics)

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 3:32 p.m. CST

    Can't say I'm surprised!

    by the milf lover

it's like reading Frank Miller losing his mind over 300 pages! I know most people hate it, and I understand why, the story is pretty bad, but I enjoyed it for the insanity and the stupidity it displayed, plus it had some really cool ideas like the Flash powering cities by running in a wheel like a hamster, and the daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman. All-Star Goddamn Batman is indeed atrocious garbage, I agree with that one.

That any time there's a talkback for Rodriguez, Tarantino, or anything Frank Miller-related, there's nothing but ill-informed, arbitrary complaining, and then I go look at the talkback for that Valkyrie movie, and everyone "CAN'T WAIT" to see it. An irrelevant comparison, maybe, but the Spirit looks awesome, and Valkyrie looks like a boring piece of redundant shit. I don't know what drives the tastes of most of the people on here. All Star Batman and Robin is FUN AS HELL TO READ! I do not understand what's not to like about it. "What are you retarded? I'm the goddamn Batman!" I can't imagine any good reason not to enjoy reading that. You complainers are fucking stupid, and your bizarre standards are robbing you of pleasure.

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 5:06 p.m. CST

    This is a surprise ?

    by m_prevette

OK...Miller can't write for shit, has anyone actually READ Sin City? It's laughable, like what a 12 year old thinks pulp crime fiction is. TDK Returns, All Star Batman, the list goes on. Even the Sin City movie was soon as Frodo started hopping around the screen like a hamster on LSD, I cut the shit was that bad yeah. So why are people surprised that The Spirit sucks? Look at the has NOTHING TO DO WITH WILL EISNER...Frank just pissed all over his "idol". Miller is a hack-level writer and since he's just filtering The Spirit through Sin City CGI green screen overkill, it's obvious he has no talent as a filmmaker, either. WHY WHY the green screen? Just shoot the damn thing in New York or closed. Geez.

When it comes to Scarlett Johannson, I must disagree. Her entry into the public eye was in response to an exceptional, vulnerable, honest performance in Lost in Translation, and the only problem is that aside from Woody Allen, everyone she's worked with has asked her to repeat it. Over the next few years, as she outgrows the cute college girl roles, we'll see just how far her range extends. My guess is that in the parts that don't rush her for an action beat or a punchline, she'll continue to surprise audiences, all the while building on her already considerable craft as an actor. In the meantime, check out Vicki Christina Barcelona.

    by MattmanReturns

You're full of shit. Everyone loves Dark Knight Returns and Year One because those were and still are great fucking comic books. I just read them again recently and loved them just as much, if not more so, than when I first read them. The bottom line is Dark Knight Strikes Again and the Goddamn Batman SUCK. I would love for them to be good, I really would. They aren't.

Hate it when people bash movies before seeing them, but...

    by Skulboy

Nothing shown so far even resembles Eisner. Eisner SPIRIT fans are going to hate this and the average Joes who have never heard of The Spirit aren't going to give a shit. This has BOMB written all over it.

Fuck off with the "graphic novel" shit.

    by TheGoddamnSiege

The Spirit has been appearing in COMIC BOOKS since 1940. The character got his start in Sunday news strips for Christ's sake. I can understand referring to something like 300, which was published in hardcover form from the start, as a graphic novel. But people these days are overusing the fucking term waayyyyyy too much. Next we'll hear of a Robert Rodriguez-directed ARCHIE, "based on the long-running series of graphic novels from Archie Press."

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 6:17 p.m. CST

    not to go there siege,

Archie graphic novels were the shit, man

    by terry1978

Remember that one volume where Reggie was anally fucking Midge and Moose burst into the Riverdale locker room and bludgeoned Reggie with a pipe, all while Dilton Doiley stood outside the room keeping watch and whistling?

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 6:22 p.m. CST

    I missed that one terry1978

    by the milf lover

but I really enjoyed the one where Veronica manipulates Archie into killing Betty's parents and then he end up framing Jughead for it..

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 6:33 p.m. CST

    which makes me think

    by the milf lover

they should totally do a big budget movie with the Archie gang as superheroes: Archie as Pureheart, Reggie as Evilheart, Jughead as Captain Hero, Betty as Superteen... (yes, these are real, from the sixties)

    by Circean6

That Miller who was one of the loudest proponants about creator rights has hacked Eisner's masterwork. Anyone who took Eisner's classes at SVA could tell you that this is simply NOT what the man would have wanted. There may very well be some truth to Miller being a coked-up skrull...

    by JMFabianoRPL

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 9:56 p.m. CST

    Is this a joke?

    by Odkin

Nothing could be as bad as the reviewer describes. Nothing. If it's even CLOSE to being that bad, then Miller's desecration of Eisner's memory should be considered a crime against humanity and he should be stripped of his Union card. Then blinded. Then pissed on.

  • Nov. 13, 2008, 9:59 p.m. CST

    Man. Well, that sucks.

Hopefully the good news from this is that Frank will go back to shunning Hollywood like he used to. And making great comics, like he used to.

I believe in Frank. If it's a car wreck, I'll still watch.

    by JDanielP

That's the thing about Frank Miller. When he's on, he's REALLY on. And when he's off, he's REALLY off. Despite DK2 and ALL STAR BATMAN, I'm guessing that Miller STILL has a surprise or two left in him,...even if this movie isn't one of them.

  • Nov. 14, 2008, 7:33 a.m. CST

I still think this looks exceptionally entertaining.

    by myspoonistoobig

I'm tired of people bagging on it. If you saw the movie and you have legitimate complaints about the potential ineptitude of the direction or performances fine, but if you just want to whine that it looks like Sin City and that Frank Miller is old, fuck you.

Frank Miller's life as a story arch

    by stvnhthr

Frank has the chops to be great, but something went wrong. Perhaps were watching his own fall From grace story arch and soon he'll wake up confused and disoriented in Hell's Kitchen and become Born Again. Imagine a reenergized Miller fighting to regain his former glory in the comic industry. That would be cool. Get straight, get well, and get working Frank. We love you man!
