Trailer for Dario Argento's GIALLO unfurls upon the pixelly screen before you!

Published at:  Nov 13, 2008 12:35:21 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm very giddy about this one. I don't know if it is just that Argento is directing a movie titled after the genre that he introduced me to, or if it is just that there's a new giallo from Dario. Whatever it is, this trailer which played at AFM titillates my eye and ear glands causing my mouth to water in anticipation! Yes sir, I'll take two tickets immediately!

I've seen DTV trailers that have better titles, voice overs, and music. It looks like more torture porn to me. Pass.

Ha ha what;s with the trailer voice guy?

    by ironthorman

It just doesn't fit for some reason. It sounds like the trailer voice for a buddy cop comedy, then your seeing this dramatic shit. I dunno maybe just me.

    by frankenfickle

were there any really dark scenes they could have shown? like, did they not have any scenes that were just total black, no light at all? that's what i like. not this "i think i may have seen something" bush league garbage.

    Saw it yesterday...

...and as big fans of Argento, this doesn't inspire confidence. It seems as though Dario died in the late eighties and someone with precious little talent has been impersonating him ever since (though Argento may have returned from the dead to helm Non Ho Sonno, then returned to his eternal slumber, leaving his impersonator to carry on) - we'll try and keep an open mind about this one, but we're getting a Trauma-like vibe about it...

    Oh, Dario...

    by charlie & tex

The pipe & slippers are calling. Apart from Non Ho Sono, he's gone about 20 years without a decent movie to show for. It's depressing, really.

    An almost comically bad trailer

But I've always liked Argento's films. And I'm willing to believe that this one is probably pretty entertaining. I'dl take a chance on it.

Fuck this piece of crap. It looked like a cheaply done run of the mill thriller with direct to DVD quality. I'll just go watch Profondo Rosso again, back when Argento was still innovating and talented.

Same shit is in the Friday the 13th Remake... I wonder if the girl with the missing sister agrees to meet the Killer after he contacts her somehow. Just like the guy did in The Vanishing- Both the French and American version. Using the Taxi Cab as Bait/Trap- That shit is lifted from Bones. Then you have the two Partners/Detectives hunting the clue giving killer guy down. Oh shit son!!! That's mutherfuckin Se7en right there!!!! I guess one of them is killed though cause Well shit it's just that Kong Jack Wannabe and the Weres My Sister Bitch at some point. Damn Dario... What happened Bru??? Your balls drop?

Even fans of Argento's "classic" work (which isn't that hot to begin with) have to admit that the man just recycles the same old goddamn shit again and again. (Let's have crazy rock music all of a sudden!) Mother of Tears was awful, this will be too.

    Argento....

    by macheesmo3

has great films: Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, Inferno, Two flys on Grey Velvet, Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Good films: Opera,Phenomenon,Trauma,Cat O' Nine Tails
and bad films: Do You Like Hitchcock?, The Card Player, Stendhal Syndrome , Phantom of the Opera

The sad thing is they get worse the newer they tend to get ( haven't seen Mother of Tears yet)

    Looks... dark.

    by subtlety

seriously, it looks like they had to choose between Brody and the lighting technician. Not a bad thing, though; hopefully it means that Argento's getting his eye for atmosphere back. After the decent but very uneven and --worst of all-- cheap-looking "Mother of Tears" this looks like Argento may be interested in making a real movie again.
His gaillos can sometimes lean toward a kind of mean-spirited torture porn with some arty flourishes, so I hope this one has a little more going for it than gore. As far as Im concerned, great Argento isn't about the gore, its about the atmosphere. But this one looks like he might have remembered that. More than anything else, it looks like the guy's finally TRYING again. The last 2 decades of films from Argento just seem like he hardly even cares anymore. Back in the day, even something as stupid as "Inferno" is filled with great stylistic choices (colors, camera work, music) which elevate it beyond its goofy nonsensical script. With "Mother of Tears" it seemed like he was still finding his creative legs again ... great stuff strewn amid laughably amateurish camera work and baffling production. There are some genuinely great, unsettling bits such as the death of Michael and the collapsing world around the characters... but then the climax looks like it was thrown together using rehearsal footage over someone's lunch break. Like someone said, "Don't worry, when we build the real set and light it properly, this'll look much better" but then they forgot and just used the mock-up.
Still, I, for one, actually felt like with "Mother of Tears" I could feel his heart back in it, at least sporadically. Now, by calling the thing "Gaillo" its starting to sound like he's imagining it as a career-defining capstone. Which means maybe he's finally got his ambition back after years of coasting. Plus, no Argento script credit! And real actors! That's gotta give it a little boost.
