Is WONDER WOMAN Zeroing In On Her Director??

Published at:  Nov 11, 2008 11:55:16 AM CST

Merrick here...

This should've been posted yesterday, but anything that could get in the way...well...got in the way.

In short: IESB is reporting that a particular director's name is "circling" the long-in-development WONDER WOMAN movie project. It's not clear at this time if said director is actually attached to the project already, or simply one on a rabble of candidates who may be under consideration.

Said director's name? McG.

Given that TERMINATOR SALVATION is a Warners film and WONDER WOMAN is as well, this kind of migration/attachment makes sense in many political ways. And, given the surprising okayness of recently leaked TERMINATOR SALVATION footage, maybe this news isn't as icky as it might once have seemed.

Of course, I haven't seen TERMINATOR SALVATION, so what do I know?

Read more details...

HERE!!!

This news comes shortly after the revelation that Beyonce wants to play Wonder Woman (HERE) and has already met with Warners & DC towards this end.

    by david cloverfield

crawling around in a WW costume. She looks hot in a skimpy outfit, and that's all I expect from WW. (Not to mention this casting choice alone would negate all the feminist bullshit connected to Wonder Woman, and turn the character into a sex object, like she should be) I say go for it WB. On a more serious note, I like McG (and the fact he refuses to change name for the whiney masses of bitches). This is good news.

    by turd furgeson

Seriously, she sounds so labored when she's trying to speak and use proper grammar.. She's way too ghetto to pull this off. If Jada Pinkett Smith was a foot taller, she would be perfect if they wanted to go the route of having a black lead in the role. Hell, even Rihanna, if she wanted to act, could do it, but not beyonce. Unless shes been working with a language coach like OJ did when he wanted to be a sportscaster..

It's very rare to find a tall, naturally raven haired, blue-eyed beauty, with great big natual breasts, who can act. I've got zero problem with a woman of mixed race, as long as she has big ole titties and can act, I'll be happy. Of course a talented director is even more important than the casting ofthe lead role.

    by keith maniac

I remember when i was a nipper and Chris Reeve was cast as Superman. There has never been a complaint i've ever heard or read about that choice. Despite the fact that the old Wonder Woman tv show contains enough cheese to clog up the Suez canal, the casting of Lynda Carter was right on the money. They used to track people down, no matter how long it took, who i used to assume came from glass cases that said "break glass in case of need of Superman, Wonder Woman look-a-like". The choices made now are just shite and baffling, more shite than anything.

    by andtheflesh

I'm not even going to complain about remakes or reboots (what the fuck is the difference?). My issue is that EVERY fucking character must now be black.

I Am Legend - White guy becomes Will Smith

    iRobot - Ditto

Karate Kid - White skinned Italian magically transforms into Will Smith's kid

Wonder Woman - White big breasted brunette turns into Black big breasted pop star

Iron Man - Nick Fury is no longer a white bad ass, he's Shaft.

Hitchhiker's Guide - Ford Prefect goes from a snarky white dude to wacky black dude.

And look, I'm not opposed to a lot of this shit but come on when will it stop?! Are we going to start taking traditionally black characters and turn them white? Is a reboot of Shaft with Vin Diesel as the lead in the works? How bout Candyman, starring Javier Bardem? Kevin Spacy as Martin Luther King in "I Have a Dream"? Simon Pegg as Barack Obama in "Yes, We Can!"?

    Typical WB

    by booster gold lives

Marvel decides to create a game plan, a cohesive universe, with single-character films with solid talent both in front of and behind the camera (so far), leading up to a fanboy culmination film adaptation of "The Avengers."

WB decides that since superheroes are kewl and they can't get a handle on anyone except Superman and Batman, they'll toss everyone they have left into a poorly-thought-out "Justice League" movie. Until, of course, that falls apart for all the obvious reasons (the strike helped, of course), which gives them a reason to rethink their plan and come up with something that emulates and possibly improves upon Marvel's plan...until "The Dark Knight" comes out and makes them think that dark superheroes are kewl. And since they don't have a handle on anyone but Batman by now...well, wash, rinse, repeat.

In other words, this will suck.

    by drath

Has the look you want for Wonder Woman in my view. Remember her riding bare back on the white horse on the beach?! Geez, I thought for a second we were getting a Wonder Woman screen test. Okay, she has an accent, which she'd have to drop for at least the parts where she's pretending to be Diana Prince, so maybe she has to be dubbed to satisfy the suits, but I'd take that waaaaay before Beyonce--who'd be a much better fit for Cheetah. Sorry but Wonder Woman SHOULD have a Greek-ish Mediterranean ethnicity and not be African American. I'd take a Middle Eastern actress too, but African and (far east) Asian American is really pushing it in the wrong direction. Having Beyonce play Wonder Woman is right up there with having a white guy play Black Panther. It's not the same as making Catwoman or King Pin black, it's worse. Lucy Lawless is no doubt too old to play the role now, but jeez are they really not getting it right with their female heroes. Who'd a thunk Supergirl would look so good compared to the Elektra and Catwoman efforts? I don't think Wonder Woman should suffer the same.

This is beyonce saying. if obama can become president, then its about time black actors stood up and said we want more action roles. Lynda Carter is the definitive wonder woman. Beyonce looks hot when she is fit. But her acting roles were so dull and boring and I think Beyonce possibly see herself as the female will smith. I would love to see the actress who plyed solange do it. There is something wrong with beyonce doing it. I am not racist by any means. Who is going to play steve trevor? jay-z! could be terence howard. They will have to change the costume. Will beyonce pick up the phone and demand that Oprah play the Queen of paradise island. by orbots commander

Even in the realm of comics, WW's source material was pretty lame. The only way to make a Wonder Woman movie is to radically alter the character. Wonder Woman also has no rogues gallery to speak of. Honestly, WB is better off putting a Wonder Woman movie on the back burner, but what do I know? At best, the movie will be a Charlie's Angels type camp-fest with a pop music soundtrack with McG at the helm. I say give it to McG and let him play in that sandbox; maybe that'll keep him away from messing up better material.

Ok, you're obviously showing your true colors. and please, don't tell me you voted for Obama, and that some of 'best friends' are black.
Except for Sam Jackson's Nick Fury (that's actually in the comics) all the other 'blackwash' characters were just badly misCAST, that's all. Making them 'Black' wouldn't matter as long as it's the right person. As for Woman Woman, technically it wouldn't work with a black actress if they set it during WWII. I wouldn't care if she was Black, White, Green and etc, as long as it's the right casting. Beyonce would be JUST WRONG for that role. Period! And not because she's black, because she can't act!

I betcha Paradise Island looks like Naboo from Episode I. And the Cheetah ends up being a Kryptoni..er, Amazon and they get into EXTREME Matrix-style fights! And WW's suit has to be in a can. Can't forget the can.

    Save us again Harry! Please!!!!!

And insert your "DC movies to be more grimDARK" joke here.

Seriously, no, just no. And this isn't a race thing. Face it...A-listers just to have A-listers + betraying the source material = angry comic geeks. Or did we forget CINO? (Apparently we did, and this extended to DC AND Marvel, the latter of which still basically let Halle Berry be the star of X3. She gets to lead the team, for God's sake!)

BTW, just in case you don't believe my earlier "not racist" comment, this is why I equally despise the rumors of Johnny Depp to Nolan Batman. And even though I don't like him, I do have to admit though that he has some talent. (maybe that is another reason...if Depp is in Batman and does a good job, how do I hate him? ;-)) B. Knowles...not so much. She did help bury the Austin Powers franchise, indeed. Though to be honest, the first movie was the only really good one, after that was it generally became Just Another Juvenile Humor Film and a caricature of its former self with the catchphrases and all.

Between this, Keanu as Plastic Man rumors, JLA clusterfucks, GL Jack Black rumors...I guess we know who to REALLY thank for the better Batman movies of the 2000s. (hint: Chris Nolan, JUST Chris Nolan) Otherwise this IS still WB we're talking about. Marvel is going to KILL them in the theaters, as they are doing a lot of things right now with this Avengers plan. Now they need to fire Quesada and Bendis so I can like their books again.

And just so you know, I voted for Obama...BECAUSE HE IS A DEMOCRAT AND OFFERED BETTER SOLUTIONS TO CHANGE THE LAST 8 YEARS AROUND.

Also, the Green Lantern and Nick Fury things worked because John Stewart and Ultimates Nick Fury are canon. They aren't gratuitous changes just to be more PC.

...I remember reading an article where he was saying how difficult it was writing the WW script because unlike other superheroes, there are very few to zero well known WW storylines, the origin story is fairly vague and there's really no reason to her becoming a superhero. Whedon knows how to do powerful women who, whilst sexy, don't come across like some guys wet dream. As I said before, starting with Spy Who Shagged Me, it became a toilet-humored, catchphrase-laden parody of its former self (Heather Graham was hot, though).

    Black Actors in "White Roles"

    by continentalop

Casting Black People in White Roles

With all do respect to those complaining about it, I find it a completely bogus issue. How many remakes and reboots have their been in the last couple of years, and how many of those did they recast the role with someone who was black? And even then, how many of those recast roles involved the lead role and not some token supporting character? Not that many I bet. Andtheflesh at 9:41:02 listed 6 movies with black characters (and some of those movies were released in 2004 & 2005). Lets look at those six movies:
I am Legend and I, Robot: Both starred WILL SMITH, megastar, and both were based on books. I am Legend was filmed twice before, but they were done so under different titles (The Last Man on Earth and Omega Man) and I don’t think anyone can say that Vincent Price and Charleston Heston owns the part so much you could never cast someone else in the role. Otherwise, I don’t think race was the big reason why they cast a black actor but the fact he is WILL SMITH, mega-star. Those films were probably written for white actors in mind but they wanted to go with WILL SMITH, mega-star, for box office. Damn liberals.

Karate Kid: Maybe the reason they recast the Karate Kid with a black kid is that he just so happens to be mega star WILL SMITH’s son. Hell, I don’t see that as affirmative action as much as I see it as Hollywood nepotism at its worse.

Wonder Woman: This is only a rumor, just as it was a rumor that Will Smith was going to be Captain America or Chris Rock was going to be Robin in Tim Burton’s series. So you are bringing up something that isn’t even an issue yet.
Nick Fury in Iron Man: Well they cast Samuel L. Jackson because the character of Nick Fury in the Ultimate Universe was based on Samuel L. Jackson, so I guess you should blame Marvel Comics for that and not the filmmakers.
And Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: I don’t know, maybe the producer’s thought he was pretty funny? Plus isn’t Ford Prefect an alien? Isn’t it just as ridiculous to assume he is white?
Besides these films, I randomly looked up eight remakes, reboots or tv shows adapted into movies that were released this year on imdb, and of those eight only two had recast with black actors, but only in a supporting role for both films: Death Race (turned Chicago Joe from a Italian Gangster into a black gang-banger, but they also recast Frankenstein from an American into a Limey) and Prom Night (they had some black people in the movie, while the originally movie was all white people). I should add that of those eight films, two of the remakes – Shutter and One Missed Call – recast the movie from Asian to white Americans. Damn affirmative action.
As you can see, all of the complaining about movies being remade with black actors in roles identified as white is really making something big about nothing. The worry shouldn’t be about blacks somehow stealing white roles, but about bad casting in remakes in general (Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet or Topher Grace as venom comes to mind) Plus, I have yet to see them take a truly iconic character and make him black: no black Bond, no black Batman, no black Sherlock Holmes, nothing. The closest thing to that is Wild, Wild West, which was a disaster I admit, but once again I think the reason they went with a black actor wasn’t so much do to the color of his skin as it had to do with the fact that he is WILL SMITH, mega-star.

McG and Beyonce sounds Similar to Pitof and Halle Berry

    by adrian marcato

Take a visual commercial director and a black woman in a comic book character role seen primarily as 'white', maybe jazz it up, you know for those MTV kids, and start printing the money...until no one sees it. I'll admit, Beyonce has a bigger fan base than Halle Berry, and McG is arguably a better film director than Pitof, but Beyonce is still a bad actress pending 'Cadillac Records' and McG is still a bad director pending 'Terminator: Salvation'. Neither has a credit that lends hope or credibility here. Suggestion: Make Wonder Woman like she is portrayed in the DC comic... because its the character that should sell the film over the actor or director, and this movie would quickly turn into the 'that's different' approach that plagued Catwoman, and keep people disinterested, hoping for a true wonder woman film. Warner has put itself on a block of delusion with 'the Dark Knight' in stating that they will take the 'dark edged' approach to all their heroes...this news doesn't fall in line with their previous statements. My guess is that McG is just a name constantly thrown around in any action or superhero project...and he always seems to get shelved...remember superman? And remember Will Smith being touted as a possible Superman candidate? Neither of those materialized and neither will this project.

Remember "The Batman" and how it caused us not to have any non-Batman Bat-characters on Justice League Unlimited cause "people would get confused?" Well now they're not shy about using different versions of the same characters, now are they? And if this WW rumor is true, they'd just screw the Justice League pooch that they supposedly have such a hard-on for. (so much that they were willing to rush it out, and BEFORE Nolan's Batman saga is over AND before another Superman!)

Outside of the real of really special directors of this stuff - Whedon, Singer, etc. - McG is an incredibly good choice.

    by oisin5199

I have absolutely no faith in DC movies right now. Once Nolan leaves the fold, WB is screwed. Charlie's Angels was decent fun, but really a hack film. If you're approaching this movie as a 'remake' of the 70s show like Charlie's Angels was, then maybe McG is a decent choice. But if you're actually wanting to launch one of the most recognizable comic characters in history into the film world, especially to prepare for a Justice League film, this is NOT the way to go. And the Beyonce thing is just ridiculous and hopefully will never happen. Sarah Palin is more likely casting. I just wish the idiots at WB had actually listened to Joss, so we could have gotten a nuanced portrayal of the Amazonian goddess (and no, there's no connection with the Amazon river), directed by someone who at least understands what feminism is, rather than a cheesy, cheesecake director like McG. Too bad there are not more female action directors out there.

huh? Whedon had completed a script and the studio just wanted to keep tweaking it, while at the same time buying up another WW script from some first timers that they had no intention of making. Whedon saw the writing on the wall and said, no thanks. I loved the idea that Whedon had about Diana being an innocent who suddenly has to cope with and understand violence, as she does when she gets shot for the first time. WW is a particular kind of fish out of water story, which could have a really interesting feminist resonance, where a woman who is super strong and royalty has to somehow adjust herself to a patriarachal society who doesn't value her strength. There's a reason why female superheroes haven't worked in Hollywood. Because they usually devolve into male misogynist fantasies like 'Super Ex-Girlfriend.' Whedon could have made it work and avoided those cliches while still making Diana sexy.

If McG is going to direct, he might as well pull from the resources of the hit show he executive produces: CHUCK. Sarah Lancaster is a bombshell (and does in fact look quite a bit like Lynda Carter), and has the "wisdom" thing down with playing Chuck's caring, wisdom dispensing older sister. I think this would be a good way to go with WW casting. Anyone else?

Apparently, I come off as racist...

    by andtheflesh

...when in all actuality I suppose I'm just a purist. And even then I can let a lot of things slide. My biggest problems with most of the films I listed have less to do with the race of the actor but with the actor specifically. Will Smith was not cast well in iRobot or I Am Legend not so much because the characters were originally white but because they were originally intelligent, low key, and respectable people. Neither of them would watch Shrek, collect "vintage" 2006 sneakers, or go hunting in a fucking diablo.

My apologies on the Nick Fury issue, I stopped reading superhero comics before the Ultimate universe came into being so my fondest memories of Nick Fury come from when he was essentially Solid Snake.

Regardless of all that, Wonder Woman is fucking white. Period. Without changing her entire backstory there's no way to make her black.

I think that some characters are have become such icons that to radically alter their appearance is wrong. We talkbakers complain endlessly about nipples on Batman and yet apparently some of us would have no issue if he were black?

Finally, I voted Obama and no, I have no black friends. I live in Maine for fuck sakes, statistics are against me. Especially so when you consider that the vast majority of ALL people are intolerable.

That casting of Anakin was horrible...but the bad casting was also met with equal amounts of bad writing and equally bad directing. It was a perfect storm of incompetence!!!As far as hot people, and seeing them in films, I can watch free internet porn for that, which includes full frontal nudity and full penetration sex. However, when I see a real Hollywood movie, I want quality in acting, writing and direction because although I am paying for a ticket or a DVD, I certainly am not going to get full frontal nudity and penetration sex out of a Hollywood made film, and even if I did, as I said before, I could still get that for free on the net watching porn!!!

I did not accuse you of racism, but if it seems like I implied it I am sorry. However, my complaint was more with the fact that many people are making a big deal over nothing. The problem with I am Legend and I, Robot wasn’t that they cast a black man in the lead is that they made them star vehicles, changing the part to fit WILL SMITH, megastar, and his perceived strengths. It is the same thing they did with Keanu Reeves in “Constantine”, Arnold in “Running Man”, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” series, and Angelie Jolie in “Wanted”.
Personally, I think many superheroes in the modern era work better if they are portrayed by a black person or other minority. Two that come to mind right away is the Punisher and Ben Grimm, the Thing. As I have written elsewhere, Ben Grimm is former gang member who escapes the slums on a football scholarship and then joins the armed forces for a career. Sounds like he could be black man to me.
I will say that there are occasions where the race of the character is very important to me and I believe that he can only be white, or black if we are talking about the Black Panther. I already posted something about how Captain America has to be white over at the Captain America TB and I won’t repeat my arguments here. However, I will say that I can see going in two directions regarding Wonder Woman: if the movie is set in the 40’, she should be white (but not necessarily Greek, remember the Amazons were in Greek myths but they themselves were not Greeks); if it is set in the modern era, I think she should be a mixed race person to make her appear more exotic. But first and foremost cast someone who can act and who I can believe is an Amazon warrior.

She's italian, which is close enough to greece. Fuck, she's passed as Spanish and French before. And she's built like a fuck machine and would look tasty in the outfit. And really, thats all we really care about with WW isn't it? No one actually gives a shit about the character. As for Whedon, apparently he took two years to write a story outline. Thats how little there is to do with the character. At the same time as Whedons departure, Joel "Cuntface" Silver bought a spec script from 2 guys who set it during WW2. He bought it not to film it, but to take it off the market! Then hired those same 2 guys to write a new script. Whedon also said that he couldn't believe the lack of support and enthusiasm from the studio. My opinion is that they should let Miller make Justice League and use that as a launching pad if any particular character that stands out. Rant over.

Instead of going on a tirade on 'BLACK' actors in 'WHITE' Roles. I just called you out, that's out.Anyway, whatever your opinion, no one really wants to see a Wonder Woman movie, and whoever they cast (unlike Marvel Movies) it will be stunt casting. But the big problem, IMO, is that Wonder Woman is a bit of a mess of a character. Her origins are weird (amazon child, made of clay?), her powers are hard to explain, and even her costume doesn't make much sense (amazon wrapped in the American flag?). She simply doesn't have the simple, iconic origins of Superman, Batman, Hulk, and others, that make their stories so much easier to tell on the big screen.

    Wonder Woman Thoughts

    by continentalop

1 – Cast an Unknown: I don’t see the point in throwing around all of these big names. Cast this like they did the original Superman movie and get an unknown so you don’t have to fork over truckloads of money to a name. As an added bonus, you can probably sign them for a multiple film deal before they get big and with any luck they will be typecast so they will always be available for sequels. Besides, the star of the movie is the character of Wonder Woman, people will show up no matter who the lead is as long as the movie is good and she is a convincing Wonder Woman.

2 – Get the Right Actress: The lead doesn’t have to have a name, but she should fit the part. We should stop worrying so much about her ethnicity and more about her physique. Wonder Woman shouldn’t just be a pretty face or even a model she should be an Amazon. Find someone tall, with a great, athletic build, not just a good-looking woman. She should stand out from all other women and she should look like she could kick most guys’ ass, even if she didn’t have any powers.

Plus she should probably cast a younger woman. Besides the fact that it will help the entire “fish out of water” angle so many seem to love, it will also allow you to make a number of sequels without worrying that she will get to old for the part after awhile.

3 – Use the Corny Stuff: Most people will tell you to avoid the “cheesier” or “cornier” elements of Wonder Woman mythos, I say don’t. Bask in them. It will be what separates you from all the other super-hero movies. So feel free use her old secret identity of Diana Prince or the Invisible Jet. That doesn’t mean you can’t give it a “logical” explanation. For example, you could say that Invisible Jet was created because Steve Trevor’s plane was totaled in the crash, and the Amazons were incapable of repairing it, so they beseeched Hephaestus to build them their own plane, which he did, but out of mystical aether.

4 – Feel Free to make it a Little Kinky: Have you ever read the first eight years of Wonder Woman? William Moulton Marston had practically every issue be about submission, domination, tying someone up, spanking and cat fights. Don’t be afraid to slip a little sex in there.

5 – WWII Connection: Personally, I think the movie would be better if it was based in WII, since that would give a better explanation as to why she wears an American flag costume (she isn’t a patriot but she does want us to know she is fighting on our side against the Axis), but if the studios refuse to green-light a period piece at least make sure there is a connection to WWII. You could say that Queen Hyppolyta was the original Wonder Woman, having gone to Man’s World to fight the forces of Ares during WWII (hence the costume). Now it is her daughter’s turn and so she bequeaths her old costume to her.

6 – Take It Seriously: While earlier I mentioned they should use the corny stuff and have fun with it, at the same time they should also try to make a good movie and not look at this as some piece of camp that is beneath them. As long as you don’t act condescending to the audience or the source material, you might actually make a film that people will see.

Whoever makes Wonder Woman needs to CARE.
It can't be about people who are looking to get their name in the ring for franchise/tentpole movies. It can't be about just tossing out names of A-list people who can or can't carry or open a movie. This is Wonder Woman. She was about integrity. She was about bringing peace.

The person they choose should look somewhat like Lynda Carter and be able to pull of beautiful-but-not-a-slutty-sexpot and smart and be able to pull off integrity.

really Chromedome is right - get an unknown actress - but she should look similar to the way Phil Jiminez or Adam Hughes pencil WW. But bring in Warren Ellis, Geoff Johns, others to help with story ideas. For some reason I'm thinking that a WW movie covering several decades with an off-the-wall SF storyline (think Grant Morrison when he's writing really well) might work. Don't worry about Diana Prince, Paradise Island, or even Amazons, if it doesn't help the story.

I refuse to see a lot of the films that come out now because most tv series are better than the majority of block buster movies these days, hour for hour, minute for minute. Case in point, "Eagle Eye"--what a waste of time, and a waste of my ticket money??? The film was an over budgeted rehash of War Games, Die Hard 4, 2001's Hal...the mad computer story, and XXX: State Of The Union...and a not very good mix of those films, at that.As a result, I will not support Hollywood putting out this kind of garbage, from Spiderman 3, to Speed Racer, I'd rather go without it, or wait and rent the DVD...and if it is a bad film, I warn everyone I know about it, and if I find a good or great film, I tell as many people as possible to rent or buy it. Better that than being burned like I was with Eagle Eye!!!

But I've yet to hear it from any of you bigoted bozos. Also, Beyonce is a black hole of charmlessness (no pun intended), and she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. So she shouldn't get the role for that reason. On the other hand, if there's one major comic character more outmoded than Superman, Wonder Woman is it. The thing about Wonder Woman is...

    by continentalop

I know some people find her roots in Greek Mythology and her connection to the Amazon’s make her seem convoluted, but actually all of William Marston’s use of the Greek myths makes Wonder Woman an easier film to write, since she practically already follows Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces outline.

She starts out in her Ordinary World (Paradise Island), has the Call to Adventure (Steve Trevor’s plane crash), the Refusal of the Call (her mother refuses to let her be involved in the contest to see who goes to Man’s World), Meets the Mentor and is Given Supernatural Aid (her mother, Queen Hyppolyta, will advise her and give her the Lasso of Truth and the Invisible Jet), Crosses the First Threshold (flies back to Man’s World with Steve Trevor), goes on the Road of Trials where she meets Test, Allies and Enemies (in the comic book, she had to learn how to operate in our world, while meeting allies like Etta Candy and enemies such as gangsters and spies), she Approaches the Inmost Cave (whomever the villain is in the movie, this will be that person’s lair), faces the Supreme Ordeal (in the old comics it would have been her bracelets being bound together by a man, rendering her powerless), and than go through the Reward, The Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return with the Elixir phase (each of these depending on the plot or storyline, up until the defeat of the foes master plot and the acceptance of Steve Trevor’s love).

Normally I think writer’s obsession with following classic mythological structure has become way overdone, but this is one time were I think it would be appropriate.

The reason she shoudnt be black is that she is the daughter of Hippolyta who is the daughter of Ares. As they are part of greek mythology it is unlikley she would be black, it is also unlikley she had blue eyes so linda Carter was also wrong.

Because she's been that way in comics since the 1940s, frankly. Certain fictional characters are the way they are with only so much room for interp - Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, even Dracula (c'mon, Blacula was the height of silliness in that '70s era, even if it was the great Williams Marshall)). And my big issue is a stupid bitch of no talent in music, acting or anything like Beyonce, propped up first by her father and then that cretin Jay-Z who thinks it okay to tell his audience that street life lessons are on par with a geunine education in whatever field/area you desire. Fuck him and hand him an exploding cigar. He's a dick. Period. But getting back to that which you questioned: Yeah. I think Wonder Woman should have a look that makes sense in relationship to decades of the comics. Again, I bring up the Will Smith as James West, one of WB pictures great fuckups and why they did not create franchise (of course add no clue about the West-Gordon . relationship and awful script and shithole direction, too). Comic-adventure-fiction icons are such for a reason. Sure you can do a black/asian/indian whatever Sherlock Holmes, but it's not Holmes. It's not. Obviously, we agree on Bitchonsay's lack of genuine talent, though. And I don't think Superman or WW have to be "outmoded." Depends if you're an ultra-cynic or not when it comes to your heroes/heroines. At middle-age, I'm not. My little boy probably helps with that. Also, thanks for your usual fine sense of fair play and reason.

If you think that's important to the character, fine. That's a legitimate reason then, at least subjectively. You are officially the only person here with one.Personally I think, since her origin has been changed more than once in the comics, as long as you can tell the story sincerely, it's fine. Not that I'm saying they'd really need to deviate - this is a liberally-interpreted comic book version of an ancient myth. I mean really: "No! She cannot be BLACK! Can't you see? The superhero Wonder Woman's mythological Amazonian mother's FATHER was Ares - a Greek God! She must be white, of course ... Plus light skin goes better with her invisible jet fighter!" You know? Maybe you're "right" but it's a helluva weird point to insist on, all things considered.

And crankyoldguy, I respect tradition to a point, but I don't really see "this is is how she's always been" being a real argument in this case. Would you reject a brown-eyed actress playing her, since Wonder Woman has "always" had blue eyes? What if her hair was short? What if they cast her as she should look according to some of the posters here who clamor for "accuracy" - Mediterranean, or even Middle-Eastern?

I hope I am not included in your list of people whose opinion about Wonder Woman's race you find ridiculous and stupid. While I did mention a preference (if set in WWII she should be white and if it is set in modern era, she should be someone who is mixed race) I did add that first and foremost they should get someone who can act and who makes a believable Amazon warrior. However, I probably should elaborate on why I preferred those races for her.

If it is set in WWII, I feel if she is any other race than white it will unfortunately be to distracting to the main story, and lead into unintentionally territory. It would be hard for a black Wonder Woman in the 1940’s not to be met with scorn, ridicule and suspicion, and I think this would cause the movie to veer off, becoming more of a film about America’s discriminatory past and less of a superhero movie.

For the modern era I mentioned that I thought she should be someone of mixed race because she would look more exotic. I should also have added I think this would help push her into more of a post-race character, as someone who sees the identity politics of the modern world as ridiculous and childish. She would the first Barack Obama era hero.

While I personally would prefer the tall, white brunette version of Wonder Woman since this is the character I am used too, I can live with them casting someone of any race as her, as long as she fits the part.

Oh, and as for the idea of Wonder Woman being a character no one cares about, I guess you didn’t go out for Halloween.

Why not just use Megan Gale for both roles? She's got the exact right look, and she's a relative unknown (in the USA anyway) which could be a plus for the studio. The only thing I'm not sure about is her acting ability, I've never seen her act before. But if she nailed the audition as well as they said she did, she can't be too bad!

In terms of "mixed race" Megan Gale is a mixture of British and Polynesian. I also heard Christina Milian tried out for WW in the Justice League movie, or was lobbying for the part. A lot of names would lobby for this part, for whatever personal reasons (whether they love the character or are jumping on the bandwagon). Although I don't see how far you can get without a script or director. And WB can't afford to compromise on just stunt casting a name at the expense of the character. And a primary appeal for WW would be women/girls too, not just fanboys (who I think will see it if it's a good movie).

Isn't it funny how all you can do about a double post is ... post again?Maybe I should have been more nuanced, but I was just annoyed at the more facile posts along the lines of "Why don't we just make all white characters black then? Phooey!" I can see your objection if it's based in WWII, however it was never my assumption it would be a WWII movie - I don't think it will be. Obviously this objection of yours differs quite a bit from the typical knee jerk reaction, since yours is about the context and how the person's color would affect that. Not at all the opinion of someone who's just got "hung up on color" as I alluded to, so I don't know why you'd even think that.As for no one caring about Wonder Woman, I didn't say that. I said the character was outmoded. As far as Halloween goes, there are precious few iconic characters for females to dress up as, especially comic book nerd women. Anyway I would object to someone dressing up as Wonder Woman on Halloween for the simple reason that it's not in the spirit of the day unless you dress as something at least vaguely scary. Like ... a BLACK Wonder Woman, maybe?

    Consider this

    by crankyoldguy

First off, Beyonce is shrill and talentless, period. End of story, children. And enough with the racism crap. That's not what's happening here. One of my son's best friends - his parents are from india - dressed up as a power ranger, his sister, 5 as...tah-dah...Wonder Woman for Halloween. Kids can be whatever they want to be. So the Halloween comment post smacks of sweating paranoia. And consider this: A lot of people are ticked off Green Lantern will be Hal Jordan in the first film, not John Stewart, because Stewart was more prominent of course, in animation. But that's a case where there ARE genuine multiple options since there's more than one Lantern. So are you racist if you want a Hal Jordan Green Lantern film or anti-white if you want a John Stewart film? No, you're not. Hell, I want one w/ both, plus Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner and most of all, Alan Scott, an old, wise Scott at that, so there you go. For me, it all comes down to an interp of the character as I know it and believe is true to the source material. Batman, from every decade, every view from artists/writers is valid. But elementally, Bruce Wayne's a traumatized-as-a-kid rich white guy. That's who he is. And BlackJack, though your post smacks of sarcasm/humor, I will say Will Smith raped my Wild Wild West since that's popular phrasology around here. MIB? Fun? Independence Day? More dopey fun. Even turkeys like I, Robot - watchable. But WWW? A burr in my personal saddle. Also honor is not old news. Not real honor.

my point about her origin is a valid one. she is borne from greek mythology. suppose the other point is that superheroes have very strong iconography, after all they were initially visual not literary characters. I dont go with the whole 'I am legend - irobot' thing cos those characters were human and didnt have a specific iconography attached. Its a doomed character created for propaganda in WWII. Lets leave it be and focus on new international characters.... and blackjackbauer- megan fox wouldnt be my choice, if it were up to me, id scrap the whole idea and start fresh, but please stop the whole 'white image of power' shit- gilscott heron did it with far more style. yeah she was white in the comics. so fucking what? i wouldn't go as far as black jack, but he has a point. a lot of those characters are white because they started way back when they had to be white. as long as they hold on to the spirit of the character, what does it matter? the halle berry Catwoman sucked because it was poorly scripted and directed, not because catwoman was black. nobody complains when Ra's Al Ghul goes from an arabic dude to liam neeson. yeah, he's not one of the "big 3" (whatever the fuck that is), but he was central to the film itself. wonder woman was a greek mythological character, she could have been a variety of skin tones or whatever, but the character was what it was because everything was white back in the day. keep the spirit of the character, a good lookin actress who can convincingly play the strong woman type and deal with the physicality of the role, and I'll be happy.

Missy Peregrym is an amazingly gorgeous woman and would be very nice in the role. She kicks ass on Reaper. If they do go with someone non-Grecian for the role, I hope it is Peregrym.

The McG/Peregrym combo would pave the way for...

    by cletus van damme

...a Supernatural/Reaper crossover. Since McG produces Supernatural, Peregrym is on Reaper, and both are on the same network...stranger things have happened, and it would be cool to see that happen.

Either Lucy Lawless or Eva Green

    by zerocorpse

But of course it won't matter because whoever directs it will just make a big-screen version of the TV show, instead of paying any attention to the source material in the comics. Flying Wonder Woman? Nope. She'll have the stupid plane. The best melee combatant on earth? Nope. She'll be a WHAM SOCK POW cheeseball who does a lot of spin-kicks and uppercuts. I've been pushing for Lucy Lawless, as she's a true WOMAN instead of a girl, and she's got the look and build to do it. I'd accept Eva Green because she's got the tits, the beauty, and the acting chops to pull it off. Anyone else would suck. As for turning WW into a Black woman-- Look, I love Black women. I *prefer* Black women-- but Wonder Woman is GREEK, and should appear as such. Add to that the idea that she's literally mde from mud, and the idea of casting a Black woman becomes not just a bad casting stunt, but a potentially anti-black statement, and you've got the formula for disaster in casting a Black woman. Make any of her foes black. Make her American friends back. Cheetah IS black, now, isn't she? (I haven't kept up with DC over the past four years). Or hey, how about this: Make a movie about any of the Black female superheroes that already exist. A VIXEN movie would kick ass! Storm could have carried her own film (or one with the Black Panther) if they hadn't wasted the role on Halle Berry (bad actress, terrible attitude about her roles, but seriously hot). The thing is that there WAS a "Black Wonder Woman", and she was called Nubia (or Nu'Bia, depending which era you're talking about; Pre or post Crisis). She was trite and cliche in the comics, playing off the "she's my Black sister" angle to draw in Black readers... She was all Black power, rah rah rah, and rather an insulting character. If Beyonce took the role of Wonder Woman, she'd turn her into Nu'Bia, the Black Themyscirian and cheeseball the movie into Halle Berry's Catwoman territory. There are plenty of existing, serious, non-cheesy, non-insulting Black heroes today. We don't need to force Blackness into comics characters who aren't already Black. If they want a Black hero, then make a Black Lightning movie (Or, "Lightning" now, isn't it?) or look at how Marvel is working it out: Rhodey will be War Machine at some point, and with Cheadle on board, they may be making plans to have a spin-off War Machine movie. Betcha it won't be cheesy like Steel, Catwoman, or any of DC's other Black hero movies.

Adapting Wonder-Woman for the movies should...

    by leafar the lost

...not be difficult, but somehow Hollywood is making it that way. There are at minimum 20 actresses out there right now that would be prefect for the role, and Beyonce is not one of them. The script practically writes itself. Just adapt what you already have in the comics! The main story would be how WW adapts to life in the 21st century after growing up on an island of Amazons who hate men. They use them for sex to get pregnant, and then kill them. The main villain could be Cheetah, Ares, Circe...it really doesn't matter. If you make a good movie then the people will come to see it. I don't get it...what the fuck is taking so long?

    Beyonce as WW?!? WTF???

    by rkhalloran

WB doesn't seem to give a rat's ass about continuity except for Superman and Batman, do they? Diana is an Amazon from **GREEK** mythology. She's supposed to look literally like a Greek goddess.

Beyonce's a good looking woman, but Greek goddess she ain't.

As far as the "women of color" comment, remember that Lynda Carter is half-Hispanic, so Ms. Knowles can please shut her piehole now...

Wonder -who? Go make me a sandwich!!!

    by darth macchio

Ok...kidding aside but serious. Is it possible to do this material justice. Of course. Is it possible to find a Wonder Woman without perusing the used CD bin at FYE? Of course. Should skin color be the first priority? Of course not. Should skin color (ethinicity) be considered? Of course.Does any of this mean we'll actually get a watchable 'Wonder Woman' much less something that isn't a horrid piece of clammy shit? Doubtful.Oh and I've got perfect/fantasy casting: Sigourney Weaver. She's too old now and she'd never have done it but she'd be perfect. At the end of the day, I've never cared about the character and kinda think her abilities are kinda dumb (invisible plane and a lasso that forces you to tell the truth? wtf? why not an indestructible toaster oven? or a gold & red bandana boomerang that doubles as a submarine?). The conceptual comic-book idea of Wonder Woman is just kinda dumb so whoever does this has a tremendous amount of work cut out for him or herself. It's very possible, and very unlikely.

    Join the CFE movement!!!!

    by jmfabianorpl

If you're upset about this, follow these instructions:

CFE stands for Creativity For Entertainment.

And this is something that has been waning in recent years. Seems most of the projects coming out of mainstream American entertainment has to be remade from an earlier (and usually SUPERIOR) work. It has been frankly disturbing how prevalent this trend is today in movies and television...moreso the former, of course.

Why do they do it? Lack of original ideas? Appeal to the adults who grew up with the originals? Saving money? The (inaccurate) belief that things always need to be reimagined to appeal to younger audiences who hate anything "old"?

Whatever the reason, a stand needs to be made. And hopefully it will begin NOW. I propose that if you believe what I believe, to join this petition to get a couple of standards established:

    1) Remaking older movies or using "hipped"-up versions of classic television shows should be looked upon as a form of PLAGIARISM. Someone does a movie, it's DONE. THAT'S IT.

    2) There should be a time limit on making sequels; i.e. you can only do one within a to-be-determined amount of time.

    3) Exceptions can be made for a character or franchise that lends itself to multiple continuities. (mostly applies to comic book characters, cartoon characters with more than one continuity, etc. However, it must be agreed to have source material available to follow AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE, and/or a source that has worked extensively with the source material.)

Feel free to add others you think should be mentioned.

Then, copy this whole message to an email, and add your name to start a list below and forward it to your other friends, etc. If you get the email by the time we are up to a multiple of 50 signatures (50, then 100, 150, etc. etc.), sign the email AND forward a copy to the major movie studio of your choice, and/or your local or national senator.

We are on the brink in general of possible change in America. I can't see how this couldn't extend to many aspects of life, including the ones we're entertained by.

Thank God this won't be happening. Oh who am I kidding, given the WW news, I bet they have it off the side just waiting to use again. Heck, THIS can be their JLA movie: have Wonder Beyotch from here, the Jud Plato Green Lantern (Jack Black, duh), Will Smith as Superman (DARING AND REVOLUTIONARY~!), Ashton Kutcher as Batman, one of the Jonas Brothers as Robin, Hayden Christensen as The Flash, Keanu Reeves Plastic Man, Steel (Shaquille O'Neal), Wonder Girl (Miley Cyrus), Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone, duh), Hawkman and Hawkgirl (Marc Anthony and Britney Spears), Aquaman (Seth Rogen), Martian Manhunter (George Lopez), Blue Beetle and Booster Gold (Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson), and Catwoman (Halle Berry, who'd end up leading the team...hey it's not the first time she got a role she didn't deserve because she has an Oscar). They would face the Injustice Gang of Mr. Freeze (Arnold version), Cheetah (Paris Hilton), Circe (Madonna), Riddler (Jim Carrey version), Joker (some rap guy, made up to look like the version from The Batman), Nuclear Man from Superman IV, Retarded Bane from B&R, Giganta (Jennifer Lopez), Brainiac (Will Ferrell), Sinestro (Chris Rock), and Lex Luthor (Vin Diesel, and we're going with the Kryptonian version from the "FlyBy" script accordingly). Director unknown, but Joel Schumacher is in negotiations.
