Three images of the GODZILLA 2000 MILLENIUM redesign!!! You're gonna dig this!

Published at:  Jul 03, 1999 9:22:43 AM CDT

Well, the paranthetical Gojira has sent in the following scoop... though upon further research, I found that the images come from WWW.MONSTERZERO.ORG, so great work there guys! As for these images... Right this second I can see Glen shaking in a puddle of juice... A certain Storm in Houston has a gleeful smile... and I'm a happy boy in Minneapolis. BTW.. Lots of cool people up here in the land of the viking. Also... this convention seems to be populated with a large amount of scantly clad babes. Thus debunking that lame, "Fangirls are dogs" dung that floats around way too often.

Hiya Harry,

Just a quick thing I thought you might be interested in.

The new Godzilla movie from Toho is titled "Godzilla 2000 Millenium" and features a brand new creature. It ignores the previous two decades
of Godzilla films and will act as a direct sequel to the remake of the original Godzilla. Toho have stated that the new Godzilla is more fierce and
vicious than any Godzilla we have seen before, The films adversary for Godzilla is at this stage only confirmed as being a saucer-shaped
UFO, but speculation among the G-community due to off-the record comments made by several Toho employees points towards there being
an actual monster for the new G to fight (rumours state that it will be semi-transparant). Hope you like the new look, I certainly do!

Keep it cool,

(Gojira)

Look! A Godzilla that still looks like the original we know and love, but is obviously even more of a bad-ass! Now that wasn't so tough, was it? If we could only get a Godzilla vs. Gamera film... Now that would be heaven.

    Intentional Camp

    by alessan

Looks like whoever is out to do this film is trying to be intentionally campy. Never works. Let's leave the giant-monster genre in the fifties and sixties, where it belongs. It was lousy sci-fi to begin with, and I personally love movies too much to spend two straight hours laughing at them.

    Japanese film techniques

    by gary2012

The Japanese aren't really trying to make this movie campy, they just haven't changed their monster movie making techniques much. The suits and miniatures all look a hell of a lot better, but they are still just rubber suits an models. They have still been making Godzilla movies in Japan. If you have seen any of the more recent ones you can tell that they aren't making them intentionally campy. Personally I think that this update just looks a hell of alot better than the stupid looking design used in last years American piece of garbage. Not only didn't it look at all like Godzilla, but I think that it just looked BAD. I just loath the day they release Independence Day 2: Another Unnecessary Waste of Millions of Dollars.

A cool IMPROVEMENT to the original design. I love it! Not like a total crappy makeover by some two directors who will do anything for a blockbuster. Didn't they make a deal with Fox to come out with six summer blockbuster movies? Whatever happened to that deal? I hope it got torn up. But I digress...excellent work from Tojo & company.

This is like my "Phantom Menace"!!!

    by rodzilla

Everyone who reads my namesake has likely and correctly deduced that I'm a Godilla fan whose childhood was colored by images of tremendous Kaiju duking it out on TV on lazy Saturday afternoons. I love the new design. It's a combination of the old and new, and is sure to please the true fans of the genre. The dorsal fins look like knives sprouting from his back!!! They've never looked better! It's true that Toho has never completely changed the way they make these films to conform to modern effects standards, and true fans bless them for it. That would be like the rock group the Ramones changing its style every couple of years to keep up with the trends. A certian number of younger, spoiled AICN readers will never "get" this genre, and that's okay. I feel sorry for them that they can't enjoy the purity and wonderment of these films. I only wish that someone would pick this film up for international distribution, but I doubt Toho is even interested in that. I'll have to wait a year or so for good bootlegs to become available, or years for crappy, pan & scan, poorly dubbed American versions. Still, the introduction of a new Godzilla is a big event for Kaiju fans, and I'm going to start saving my money now to pick up some of the imported Bandai toys to add to my collection. Thanks for following this story, Harry! Keep up the good work!

It's great to see Godzilla back to basics. These movies should always be made in Japan. Last year's blockbuster took the fun out of the classic rubber-suited actor stomping on miniature buildings and vehicles. The Americanized Godzilla film sucked all the charm out of the big guy. At least now he's back where he belongs.

Oh, I love the day when I was 5 and I went "I wanna see Godzilla. Hehe." Then I watched it. Then I bought it. Then I bought about 10 other ones, and all the toys, and I awaited the new Godzilla. It sucked(Devlin and Emmerich should burn in Hell), but now, in my early teenage years, although filled with angst, I know life is worth living, because there will be a new, REAL Godzilla movie. Haha, and I also just got a Destroy All Monsters shirt...life is beautiful.

I don't know how you can consider yourself a film fan and not remember the greatest film of last summer GODZILLA from some AMERICAN filmmakers. Maybe your longterm memory is fried from all of the illegal drugs that you have smoking instead of selling to school children, which I assume would be the only way some one like you could make a living. by goodgulf

Hmmm...a debate about who ripped off whom, and both studios are owned by the Japanese! Way to go! You managed to turn this discussion into the strangest argument I've every been seen. I loved the original Godzilla when I was a kid. I've gotten spoiled by American films by the likes of Willis O'Brian and Ray Harryhausen, that proved that stop-motion could still have creatures with "personality" if done with skill and love. The so-called "American" version of Godzilla was awful. But I've seen plenty of Japanese Godzilla sequels that aren't exactly award winners. This new incarnation of Godzilla looks amazingly like the original Godzilla. More fierce and powerful, instead of the cute national hero that Godzilla became over the years. So who ripped off who? Nobody. The Japanese are just getting back to basics.

    Cool return to originall studio...

    by brian a thomas

It is great to see Toho (sp?) doing more Godzilla movies. They have alwayse done them best.
Personally, I didn't have a problem with the new Godzilla design used by Devlin and Emmerich, its just that the story, acting and directing was so poor that it made for a terrible movie. We had to expect a newer, sleeker Godzilla when the Americanized him, and the design itself was okay. It wasn't classic Godzilla, but had they made a better story I think the design would have worked. Especially if they had gotten the chamelion type effect to work...

Now to Humonguloust. Dude, everyone knows which Godzilla movie you are refering to, and while I susspect you are just trying to cause a fuss, I'll play your game. Godzilla, the new one by Devlin and Emmerich is a rip off of the original Japanese movies.
Let us go through the Godzilla's as best as I can without having an up to date source... Could somebody update me on the correct order, dates, and fill in the missing parts.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Created in JAPAN in 1954 (yes 1954 not 44), released in the US with scenes staring Raymond Burr added ("yes!") in 1956. All the following have their US release dates, as I don't have their original Japan release date. The original Japanese version without the Burr added scenes is many times better. It's like the nariation on Blade Runner, it's okay, but better without it. Anyhow this is the first Godzilla movie where he is reborn by a nuke and he wreks Tokyo.
Godzilla Raids Again. Created in Japan, released in the US in 1959. This time he attacks Osaka fighting Angorous.
Godzilla vs. Mothra. Created in Japan, released in the US in 1964. Staring our favorite "Peanut Sisters."
Godzilla Vs the Sea Monster. Created in Japan (seeing a pattern yet humonguloust?), released in the US in 1966. This is where Godzilla became a good guy, movies basicly suck until he becomes a good guy again.
Son of Godzilla. Japan created, US release in 1966.
Godzilla vs Monster Zero. Created in Japan, released in US in 1969.
Godzillas Revenge. Japan created, US release in 1969... more or less Gvs Sea Monster and Son of G rehashed...
Godzilla on Monster Island. Japan created, released in US 1972.
Godzilla vs Smog Monster. Japan created, released in US 1972.
Godzilla vs Cosmic Monster... aka Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Japan created, US release 1974.
Godzilla vs Megalon. Japan created, US release 1976.
Godzilla 1985. Japan created, US release, 1985. Burr is called in again...
Godzilla vs Biollante. Created where humonguloust? That's right in Japan. US release is 1989.
Godzilla vs Ghidora. Japan created, US release 1991.

That is the last I know of that are avaiable on video in the US. After that, if I remember right, Godzilla becomes a bad guy again, and the movies are good again, unfotunetly Sony has so far blocked the new ones from coming out over here.
Please fill free to fill in any holes in the above...

    See ya

    Correction to above...

    by brian a thomas

I meant to say that the movies basicly sucked when he became a good guy until he became a BAD guy again... not sucked from when he was good until he was good again... hehe... typing to fast.

Anyhow the short of it is, and is sucks it didn't keep my original readable formating, that with the exception of one Godzilla movie, all the others for the last 35 years have been made in Japan, shown in Japan first, and then brough to the US. Some of the latter ones haven't been seen here yet... So I hold no hope of seeing Godzilla 2000. :(
What I would really like to see is them release the movies on DVD in their original Japanese versions, with subtitles, and an English track just in case I don't want to read subtitles. This does make a problem with the original Godzilla whith the Burr added scenes, though with a dual layer you could pick which version the good one, or the one with Burr...

    See ya,

I have to hand it to our buddy Humonguloust. Not only does he go on and on with racist comments- he's got quite the vendetta against Japanese film; lord only knows why-, but he's also deeply out of touch with the reality of AMERICA's youth...we're not all Doom-playing, Marilyn Manson listening drug dealers. And I'll vouch for Dr. Strangelove here- not a single one of your generalizations fits him. He's an intelligent kid who, in thirteen years, has learned the stupidity of behavior like that which you've displayed. So go watch your little movies like the obsessive loser you are. by rodzilla

I'm no kid at 32 years old, and if I'm a geek, then so be it. There are worse things in this world to be. I was just a bit shocked by Humonguloust's ethnocentrism, which I too interpreted as racism. However, if he was alive in 1954, then perhaps ( if he's older than I thought) he lived through WWII and might have a different view of the Japanese than we do today. Here are the facts regarding the creation of Godzilla: The Japanese were obviously inspired by a successful American science fiction film called "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms," which had effects by Ray Harryhausen ( a true pioneer!). It was released in 1953, and the original Toho "Godzilla" was released the next year. Additional scenes were added with American movie star, Raymond Burr, and the film was dubbed and shortened for American audiences. "Godzilla" was extemely successful and many sequels followed. Yes, some of them are REALLY bad ( ex. "Son of Godzilla," "Godzilla's Revenge"). There have been 22 JAPANESE Godzilla films in all. The American Tri-Star/ Sony film is based on the character from the Japanese movies! The last Japanese film was "Godzilla Vs. Destroyah," which was released in 1995. Even "Godzilla 1985" was a Japanese film, which again added footage of an aging Raymond Burr for the American release. Just for the record, my favorite Godzilla movie is 1993's "Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla," which is the ONLY Janpanese film that has NOT received some type of American release. I know most of this information is common knowledge to most readers of AICN, but I noticed there was quite a bit of misinformation out there, so I'm doing my part to correct it. I'm pretty versed on this subject, so if ANYBODY wants to know anything about the Godzilla series, just email me. Peace. ( Back to my Marilyn Manson and pot smoking now.) Just kidding. Really.

While I still have a sinking suspicion that you are all having a laugh at my expense, and that all this stuff you guys are saying about older Japanese Godzilla films is just stuff you are making up, I have to admit that maybe I made a mistake. I didn't mean to be racist, I just really didn't know they had films in Japan. I'm really not a racist, I just dislike people from other countries. They are different. You know what I mean? Sure you do. We all feel that way. Anyway, I'm really not much of a film fan, so I guess I shouldn't shoot my mouth off like that. In truth, I've only seen about a couple of dozen films, and most of them were X-treme Porno movies. You know the kind. Real kinky stuff. Man, that stuff is brilliant. Really makes ya' think, you know? "Rocks my World" as all you kids like to say while listening to your New Wave Music. Please don't be angry with me. I just wanted to make friends with some nice people. But not too nice. I hate those people. But anyway. Anyone ever see that movie with that big shark? I'm pretty sure that was American. But hey, I could be wrong. Let me know if that is a remake of a Sudanese film or something.

    ATN: Humonguloust Japanise films

    by brian a thomas

If you were alive in 1954, there is no way you couldn't know they had films, great films, in Japan. Just look at Akira Kurosawa, who is one of the greatest film makers of all time. Without Akira we wouldn't have Star Wars (heavely inspired by, The Hidden Fortress, 1958), the Magnificent Seven (Which is nothing more the The Seven Samuai, 1954 done as a western), the 1964 "The Outrage" is actually a remake of the 1951 Rashomon, and his Shakespear adaptations (RAN '85 and Thrown of Blood '57) are amount the best in the world. That is probably the most famouse Japanese film maker. From the modern era there is John Woo, who from '78 to '93 was making movies in Japan, then he came to the US to make Broken Arrow and Face/Off to mention a few. Does it need to be mentioned that most all of Bruce Lee's movies were not made in or by American's? There are many many more, those are the bigger ones that jump to mind... Oh and where would The Matrix be without the John Woo and Japanise animiation (such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell and the newer Princes Mok...[don't know how to even try to spell the last name]) styles?
Then there are other foreign films which you undoutably love. La Fem Nikita (French), the Professional (French produced and directed, made in NY), and The Fifth Element (again French produced and directed, even though some think of it as American). All those old Clint Eastwood westerns, those Spagetti Westerns, made in Italy by Italians...
Not liking foreingers is a form of raceism BTW... Also I doubt many of us here do drugs or listen to freaks like Manson (who is a rip off of Alice Cooper who did it far better ages ago). Myself I am 30, born and raised in Ohio, with my family having been here for so long we have yet to find a nationality outside of the US... Most of us here are most likely in the upper 20's to upper 30's, not the drug and/or Manson type demographic.

    another $.02 on Godzilla Millenium

    by ashura

As long as he's got that gleeful attitude as he's stomping all over the place, this should be entertaining... a little bit campy, but that's what makes the G-films fun. They have this weird attitude to 'em that is uniquely Godzilla... of course G98 didn't have that feel to it at all, except for the traditional sinking of the Japanese freighter. But, after the rest of the movie, I felt like that old guy in the hospital, whimpering "Gojira... Gojira!" I hope this new Godzilla movie retains the feel of the old ones... (thinking of a scene in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah right now... when the WW2 veteran and Godzilla share a moment together, some memories, and some tears... [even Godzilla gets sentimental once in a while] and then Godzilla roasts the building the old guy is in.) But, I shouldn't be worried. It's in good hands. Of course, anyone's hands BUT Devlin/Emmerich's hands are good hands....

And on a side note: Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson are entertainers who are campy fun in their own ways (the latter of the two having also been born and raised in Ohio, and also happens to be 30, for those of you who seek to distance yourselves from "freaks" like him.) I'll take my shock rock and Japanese monster movies over drugs any day.

Uh, dude, John Woo wasn't making movies in Japan. He was making them in Hong Kong. Same for Bruce Lee. They're Chinese, not "Japanise" (sic).

And there's nothing wrong with disliking foreign people or whatever as long as you don't act out on those beliefs in a negative fashion. Well, at least here in America anyway.

    by debaser

I laughed my ass off when i read your post. I laughed even harder at the humorless dipshits who followed with long boring essays on the history of Japanese monster movies. Dont take everything so seriously boys. Do you have any sense of humor at all? Christ, you guys acted like he just took a shit in your grandma's mouth! If you were pissed at his comments, then you should also be pissed that he got a rise out of you and exposed you as class A dicks.

This is sad. Oh well, I'm gone.

    by rodzilla

This is my last post. I'm not going to check AICN anymore. I've got better things to do. Debasser's comments directed at me and others are the last straw. He is obviously a fucking waste of of good skin defending another fucking asshole who has nothing better to do than post sarcastic humor to show off his "brilliant, dry wit," even though it has nothing to do with the topic. I'm sorry to everyone else out there who was hoping that we could find a civil tone for AICN. I can't help this. There are too many sarcastic, vemon-filled losers like Debasser out there to make this worth the time it takes to use talkback. I know every one of those shitheads will take this opportunity to have a good laugh, but I don't care. I'm gone. Good luck, Harry. Sorry.

Final parting comments in this thread...

    by brian a thomas

    Last post in this thread...
First to Popeye Doyle and everyone. I know John Woo and Lee were making movies in Hong Kong. In the original post there was a paragraph break, and I am sorry I didn't make it more clear I was jumping to another foreign film example. Also sorry for the spelling errors.
To Radzilla, don't leave just becouse Debaser seems to think that humongubust was joking. That he called us di**s, just shows the maturity level of himself and humongubust all the more.
Now then, I see that somebody said that all but the last real Godzilla movie was released here. Please fill in my holes and where I may get them... And is this in the original with subtitiles, or some bad dub?

    Thanks.

this is what im talking about....

    by debaser

OK, now I'm gonna clarify things. Do you actually believe that there is anybody who thinks Godzilla was NOT Japanese? That's pretty absurd considering that when most people think "Godzilla", one of the first things to pop into one's head is the image of hundreds of Japanese people running and screaming and bad dubbing and that's the "mainstream" idea of what Godzilla is about. This "stereotyped" image of Godzilla existed long before that horrible piece of shit hit the screen last summer. What humongulous said was funny because it is so absurd it is laughable. I've read his posts before and I always tend to laugh at them because I think they are funny. I find it sad that I had to waste the time to type this just to explain why something is funny. I said what I said because it seemed you guys were taking things a little too seriously, and if you plan on never coming back to this site, then I rest my case. Thank you for proving my point.

Now there are a few stupid folk out d'ere:)

    by djmute

Now now we can't blame some of these folk for being led so far down the hilarious path good 'ol Humo decided to lead them down. Debaser says that are we really to believe that there are people out there that really don't have a clue and think that the whole Godzilla film franchise (that word makes me think of McDonalds for some reason....franchise that is) wasn't a Jap related thingy?
    to that I say, YES!
Example: I was in the movie rental type store the other day looking for a good chinese tragedy type drama (we all now the chinese know about how cruel life can be) and over hear a guy recommend to his two girlfriends (the guy was pimp'n to the full)that they watch the new Psycho movie to which one of the girls (the dumber of the two obviously....blonde, go figure)replied "whats that about?".
This is then where the "pimp" and the "smart girl (brunette)" say that its a remake of the original Psycho, that B&W one to which they got a blank half glazed over look from the blonde. "You know the house and the crazy guy/ shower scene and senil mother?" they continue. "Yeah, um...I would know it if I see it again." the dumb girl replied.
SO theres my point Debaser! Chew on that one your ignorant, venom filled name problably starting with a "K" mean guy!
    do your research!

    by debaser

I guess I should restate my view.
OK, AICN isnt what you would call a "casual" fan's site, much less a place where people like the one in your story would come to. I was simply saying that given the nature of the fanbase we see here, I personally find it really hard to believe that a person who genuinely did not know Godzilla was a Japanese thing would even be at AICN. God,I feel like Edward Norton in The People vs. Larry Flynt with humonguloust as Flynt.

Brian Thomas, in your post you said, "From the modern era there is John Woo, who from '78 to '93 was making movies in Japan, then he came to the US to make Broken Arrow and Face/Off to mention a few." Paragraph break or not, you said Woo was making movies in Japan.

Now, if you meant on location in Japan, that's another story. :)

    But I'm just nitpicking.

"Original" Godzilla: The emperor has no clothes!

    by frank rizzo

Take away the cheesy-assed FX and the original Godzilla movies still had....uh...what DID they have exactly?? A deep, involving plot with wry, insightful social commentary? COME ON, people--all Godzilla movies are about a lizard that tears shit up! Nothing more, nothing less! Enjoy them, but please spare us all the blathering about what a work of genius the originals are, and how terrible awful the new one is. The plot has always been secondary in ANY Godzilla movie, so as not to distract from the tearing-shit-up aspect. The only thing different is that the new Godzilla has far, far better FX. OK, the old Godzilla spews fire and has mutant adversaries, I'll give you that. But please--no more pretending that the originals' FX were any better than a Power Rangers episode, or that the old-style man in a rubber suit had more "personality".

    Rodzilla: What an breast-feeding ignoramus.

    by frank rizzo

By the way, Humonguloust's posts were damn funny, only a retard or a young child would take them seriously! Which category applies to you, Rodzilla? I bet you watch "Airplane" or "Naked Gun" and get irritated because they are so darn unrealistic. To read a post that says Godzilla ISNT Japanese and you take it seriously? (snicker snicker) Does ANYONE not know Godzilla is a Japanese creation? Debaser's comments were dead on accurate and they weren't even directed at you--but you took it personally and went off to hide under mama's dress to sulk and pout. What a jackass.

the new resdesign is too cool! Although I think ignoring all previous films (again) is a mistake. Too bad this isnt the Godzilla Jr from Godzilla vs Destroyah. It would have been a logical choice. But oh well, I'm not making the movie. As long as it is out of Dean and Rolands' hands...bring it on!

Why are they letting the Japanese make the sequel to such a great American movie? And on another note, what is this Camera movie that I've heard mentioned? Are you talking about 8mm? What does that have to do with Godzilla? Well at least ID4 2 won't get ruined like Godzilla is.

FACT - Japanese made half-assed Godzilla films which were fun. FACT - American remake of Japanese fun was shit beyond comprehension. Do I make myself clear? Fucking rednecks.

    That;'s it...

    by rick deckard

Y'now, I've been giving the 'talk back' feature on this site so much time to improve itself, saying, 'oh, every opinion needs to be stated' in so many words, but this is it. I am going on the record as to 'choose to ignore' this feature because of all the chances I've given it to help improve the community that views it, absolutely nothing has come out of it. I have seen time and time again the irrelevent facts from bookstores and state college film courses again and again and I truly do wonder if there is a soul left in this medium? Does no one have the ability to laugh at a joke anymore? As a hard-up filmmaker myself, I continually deal with the issue of speach and expression contrasting with my desires to make a comfortable living, and I continually return to the answer, 'do what you want, not what they want to hear'. This is really harder than most of you think it is. As I am a avid believer that freedom comes with a price, I accept that this feature must live on, however I personally have lost hope and belief that there is an original thinking, creating being that makes their mark here. I am truly sorry, but I had to say this... regretfully.

    by debaser

I checked my e mail today and came across a message from a Mr. Craig Willmore, who informed me that he was going to send my email address to spammers and he was nice enough to make sure that I get over 100 spams a day. Why, you ask? Simple. Because I "had the audacity to support a cock sucking piece of shit like humorloguist" (sic). You know what, I dont care if you disagree with my opinions, as that is what free discussion is all about, but keep it on the message board. I dont care if you E mail me and call me names (boo hoo) but thats just stupid. I also want to point out that I am not the only one who knew humonguloust was joking. All I did was state an opinion and tried to back it up. You dont see me spamming people nor am I running away with my tail between my legs like a certain 'zilla who shall remain nameless. Asshole though I may be, at least I've kept it civil.

    Star Wars Rules!

    by megaman

I don't get all this sarcastic humor going on about how these so-called "Japanese" used to make Godzilla films before Roland and Emerson came up with him last year. It doesn't make sense. If you're going to be funny, come up with something where there's a punchline. Why is everyone attacking "Humongopoliosis" for defending the good old american craft of film-making? This page is for film lovers, I mean real film lovers. I love films. Everyone who posts here should be serious about how good film is and why it is really great that there are films. My hat is off to Mister "Humongrotesquerie", or whaterver he is called, for taking a stand about something, even though I don't understand what it is. For the record, I am going to be eighty-nine this December and I don't recollect any "Japanese" person ever being involved in the actual making of a film, although it is my understanding that some "Japanese" have been accidentally filmed in the background in some documentaries and televised news reports.

    by knowitall

I admit that Emmerich and Devlin did not make a great film with their version of Godzilla, but the film is not that bad, and the monster was not that bad either. The problem with the film was it's look, too much rain and nightime scenes (no doubt to hide special effects) and the story was predictable and the characters were cardboard cut-outs but the scene with the monster on the bridge was a triumph of special effects. The Japanes versions have their charm, but it's a FREAKING GUY IN A RUBBER SUIT!
