AICN Bat-Manga Give Away!

Published at:  Nov 07, 2008 9:54:00 AM CST

Casa de AICN Anime found itself with an extra copy of Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan on hand.

In 1966, the Adam West Batman show began airing on Japanese TV. In response, Shonen Gahosha's now-defunct Shonen King commissioned 8 Man (aka Tobor: The Eighth Man) co-creator, and uncredited artist on the Speed Racer manga (according to Manga: The complete Guide) Jiro Kuwata to produce a Batman manga. Chip Kidd, Geoff Spear and Saul Ferris have now collected and photographed this never reprinted, largely forgotten pop marvel.

In honor of this triumph of resurrected ephemera, AICN Anime will be giving away a copy of the book to best scan or photo of a piece of ephemera from your personal collection. Take picture of an old comic, magazine, poster, circular or any object that really was not produced with the intention of lasting throughout the years. It doesn't have to be Batman related. Send it, along with your postal address, to animecontest@gmail.com with the subject line "Bat-Manga."

A winner will be selected at midnight GMT-5 December 1st. Residents of the continental United States only please.

I am reading Bat-Manga right now!

    by thebiglebowsky

Some interesting characters, like Clayface and Lord Death Man, but the stories are really simplistic. Bah, it's all in good fun! And it's funny to see the Batcycle being called "the Bat-sidecar" and being equiped with machine-guns, and Robin's sidecar with wings that allows it to fly, and a laser beam that cuts through trees "like butter"!... Goofy fun and plenty of nifty looking japanese toy packaging!

I got f'ed by a publicity person who was supposed to do fulfillment once, but that was a straight give-away. Whenever there has been some participatory aspect, I've made sure to announce the winners and see that the prizes got mailed out.

    Why only US entries ?

    by robinp

Seems unfair & excusive when you consider the world wide traffic on the site.

In this particular case, it's a function of having to mail the prize out myself and not having the time/will to deal with international shipping. Sorry.

    Canada likes comics, too :(

Surely it can't cost too much more to send mail to your neighbours to the North? Oh well, good luck to all.

I haven't had the time to pick a winner yet (it's a tough decision). The winner should be up this week, and I'm hoping to get the prize mailed on on Saturday.

No - I have no formed opinion
    on WOLVERINE beyond the fact
that odds are high that I
won't like it given the Critic
climate on the film and the
    reader response I'm seeing in
    my email box.

    Screening a film for
me is no guarantee of a
    positive review - I hated
    FIGHTING, came home to write
it up - but just hated
    thinking about that piece of
shit. But at the same time, I
    knew writing a full review
    hating on the film would
    actually encourage more people
to seek it out to see if it is
as bad as I would've said it
was - and that film wasn't
    just terrible, it was a
    goddamn borefest.
