Uber-Writer Bryan Fuller: If ABC Mows DAISIES, I’ll ‘Definitely’ Return To HEROES!!

Published at:  Nov 07, 2008 1:13:37 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Bryan Fuller, who wrote the best episodes of NBC's “Heroes” during its first, best season, tells EW.com he’s returning to “Heroes” if “Pushing Daisies” doesn’t get a midseason pickup:

"I am exclusive to Daisies through the delivery of the 13th episode of our 13-episode order, which will be mid-January," says Fuller. "If Daisies isn't picked up by then, I will definitely be going back to play with my friends at Heroes."

ABC's hilarious “Daisies,” which lost a ton of viewers during the long strike-spawned hiatus separating its first and second seasons, seems a long-shot for a full-season order.

Fuller created “Daisies” as well as “Dead Like Me” and “Wonderfalls,” and his departure from "Heroes" late in season one seems to exactly correlate to the point at which “Heroes” lost its creative way.

With lead writers Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander having recently departed “Heroes,” it’s likely Fuller will have a bigger role than ever in helping creator Tim Kring steer the superhero drama.

If Fuller returns then that's great but I truly think Heroes is finding its way slowly back to greatness. I've enjoyed the last few episodes far more than the entire second season and, as long as things continue getting better, I have high hopes that Heroes will remain on my TiVo. And I don't even have a TiVo.

I like PUSHING DAISIES. Reminds me of a Time Burton movie. Very different than everything else on television. Much rather that than another reality tv crapfest. And, I've said it before. HEROES had a subpar season last year for many reasons. The Hiro sidetrek in feudal Japan was a big part of it. Nothing really happened in the show last season to evolve the show anywhere. And that's the point in these hour long dramas. You have to evolve things to the next season to keep people interested. Also, I think the break in the show, and the whole strike thing hurt too. My point. Season three is much better than season two. If people will only revisit the show, I think the viewership will go back up to close to what it was in season one. Rather trying to revamp the show, I think the producers need to focus on trying to get people interested again. Maybe another 'Save the Cheerleader, Save the World' campaign.

Heroes was a fucking stretch even in the first season. Weak characters doing stupid shit while viewers scream at their television. For every cool thing to happen, we have to put up with just so much bullshit. Pushing Daisies, on the other hand, is so filled with jokes (visual and dialogue) each ep has to be re-watched.

Heroes is trash... but trash can be fun

    by doublearon

It's sort of the enjoyable kind of trash. I reconciled it as Desperate Housewives for geeks. It's given to stunt-driven story. Something that shouldn't happen or is unexpected HAS to happen EVERY episode. To the writers it's fair game to completely throw away any past episodes, plausibility, consistency of character, basic logic and story cohesion to achieve that goal.
If you're okay with that, you can enjoy. I've learned not to expect anything with resonance to happen on the show anymore and not to expect the characters to have any connection to who they were in any previous episode. Instead, it's just trashy stuff to watch and get a little kick out of it if your bored.
On a more negative note, I find it to contain the most irresponsible images of violence of an prime-time TV show EVER, considering the audience and the lack of anything meaningful behind it.
Also, love this news. She's probably my favorite actress from 24 and Lost is one of my favorite shows, so... yeah, love it.

    by _maltheus_

I'd rather that Daisies gets another season. But then I do miss looking forward to Heroes. The question is, how much can Fuller do in for a universe where Sylar's a dutiful son of Petrelli, Claire's blood can heal anyone, and let's not forget that stupid Mohinderfly? Unless they're going to give him a hatchet (and he uses it mercilessly), there may not be much he can do.

    by tvguy4566

When ABC Mows Daisies, not if? From my understanding, Pushing Daisies has filmed their 13 episode commitment or close to it and still haven't been picked up for the back 9. Typically when you go this far into production of the the first 13 episodes with no full season commitment, there will be no full season commitment. Pushing Daisies is all but gone.

Heroes was terribly flawed from the start

    by frozenhamster

I gave the show a whole season to wow me, and other than Company Man it failed to do that every week. It was a flawed show to begin with. Too many characters, almost none of which were developed beyond creating a mystery around them.

The difference between Lost and Heroes is that on Lost I care what's going to happen to each of the characters, even if I hate some of them. With Heroes I really never did care if they all died or survived or defeated Sylar or anything.

The flaws only seemed to grow deeper as the season progressed, and once I saw the dreadful finale I understood that the show had nowhere to go creatively.

    Reply to Talkback

  • That's the primary reason IMO why the ratings cratered (they lost 55% of their season 1 audience when the season 2 premiere's ratings came in). The WGA strike - the toxic gift that keeps on giving.

Getting Fuller on board isn't enough

    by veritasses

unless he's given complete control. And I mean 100%, absolute, complete control of everything from the story and production to the hiring and firing. In other words, get rid of Kring or render him powerless. I hate ragging on Kring all the time but he's done an Abysmal job. And you can't completely cure the disease by only "fixing" a part of the problem (firing the writers last week). A good writer restricted by dumb ideas can only do so much. A great show is made with the help from a great team. And Heroes has a long way to go before it can win back the trust of the viewers. Daises is a well made, superior show but I can understand why it doesn't have mass appeal. Though, it's the kind of rare series that someone should consider adapting into a feature film.

I agree, but at the same time...ugh. We're doing the same thing we did the last two seasons FLASHBACK EPS. And while they give meat to characters, it gets old. They shouldn't kill everyone off if they want them around. And this is a gimmick to do that. Bah! I say.

I did enjoy the last two eps though, but once again...what crap did we have to trudge through to get there? Season 1 was great from start to finish.

But Season 3 is having the same exact issues 2 did.

Come on guys...we know you can do better. Hopefully the shake up will work and give us some decent writing again.

Fuller isn't bluffing or dealing from a position of strength. PD gained less than a million viewers, if memory serves, on the night of the Obama infomercial. ABC had to have been disappointed that it wasn't more than that; a lot more. If only for people who may have grown weary of all the politicking they saw.

    by _maltheus_

Well not bluffing perhaps, since Daisies is doing quite poorly, but it certainly doesn't hurt that fans of one of NBCs biggest shows are crying out to get Fuller back. ABC seems to at least be sympathetic to Daisies and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some of their execs are fans or at least see Emmy potential in it. If they're on the fence, they might be willing to renew Daisies just to deny NBC from strengthening Heroes. I think the game is more important than the bottom line to these guys. It's a long shot, but I don't think it's totally unrealistic.

We'll see if the 6.7m viewers holds for the next episode.

    by pennsy

Because before that, PD drew in reverse order, going back to the premiere, 5.7m, 6,1m, 5.5m and 6.3m for season 2, episode 1. That averages out to less than 6 million per episode. Then you have the Country Music Association awards pre-empting it next week. E!'s Kristin dos Santos does confirm that the 13th episode was supposed to be a 2-parter, but was changed at ABC's behest. In other words, a stand-alone episode that 'covers all bases'. That can be interpreted 2 ways - as a springboard for what would be the final 9 eps of season two - or a series finale.

    Oh wow. I'm choked

    by buffywrestling

Look at all of you supporting Daisies. I admit that I thought the majoirty of the posts would be of the "Fuller? I hardly even knew her!"...wait.

okay, what I meant to say was that I honestly thought that I would hear more people saying, "Fuck the flower show; Heroes yeah!" type of posts but I am honestly glimmered that I see so many people in pain that Pushing Daisies might be going away.

What do you mean pain doesn't equal love? Who raised you?

Oh! And republicans getting along with democrats, joining together in the same thread. This show has healing powers.

I signed that petition thingy. I felt a bit naughty. Then I wrote a well phrased letter to ABC. And I swore to myself I would never relive the Firefly debacle where I actually purchased a postcard and spent *money* to send it to them. Those souless exec fucks.

    Dirty. so dirty....

David Tennant needs to appear on Daisies...

    by lynxpro

...as the Pie Maker's long lost brother. The lead actor and Tennant look like they could be brothers. And considering how Daisies took some early elements from Torchwood, I kinda thought the similar appearance was deliberate.

and Daisies needs to move to SciFi...

    by lynxpro

That show is too small and too quirky to be on a broadcast network these days. It should be paired up with *Eureka* on SciFi on the same night.

Fuller's talents were far better utilized on heroes

    by citizen sane

What would it matter if ABC mows
    Daisies off of the air
We all know, the show now blows
    and Heroes is beyond repair
Though his intent was good, Fuller should go ahead and quit,
Because in Hollywood, apparently nobody gives a...

    this is good news...but

    by bacci40

it means that most likely pushing daisies is dead...which is sad...guess there just isnt an audience for a real cutting edge show...but a fuller return to heroes means that quality returns to that show...and that is good

I am going to miss Olive

    by buffywrestling

and Emerson. I so wanted her to jump him and lick his bald head. Then he could give her one of his, "What is wrong with you?" looks and she helps him find L'il GumShoe then they marry and spin off their own show that lasts forever.

Conundrum - Seven Days way better than these

SciFi is running the show Seven Days now - that's a good show, Sci Fi and fun and and humorous. These other shows are big steaming piles of bad TV.

    Daises going the same way

    by tomdolan04

as Journeyman. Sucks. Heroes is your typical 'trying to be cool to the demographics' whereas Pushing Daises (and JM) just do their own thing. A kind of 'you dont have to like me' charm that is unforced and lovely.

When will these networks (UK and US) learn that you don't have to be a mainstream super smash in the ratings to keep going and be worthwhile. The mainstream are a fickle bunch and could leave the show for the 'next big thing' at any given moment, whereas people who care about the show will keep with it week in week in, buy the boxsets and merchandise. Surely that makes more business sense?

Sure I torrent stuff, but the shows I like (Daises) I make a concerted effort to buy on shiny DVD in nice packing in show of appreciation and support definitely.

    Liking Heroes again

    by mooli_mooli

I know the exact point when I started getting excited about this series of heroes again - it was when Hiro did his time+space schtick to avoid stabbing Ando, but they didn't lay it all out on a plate until the next episode. I left the previous episode thinking that it *had* to have been deliberately contrived and unconvincing, and it wasn't just shitty writing... and astonishingly I was right in this instance! Also, best not too think too hard about these things, or you might notice Hiro left a real sword in a rack in a costume shop where a prop sword should be. Some poor sap's going to find that reaaally funny later...
