Lo, CLASH OF THE TITANS Casting Hath Begun(eth)!!

Published at:  Nov 06, 2008 9:30:50 AM CST

Merrick here...

Sam Worthington is in talks to become Perseus in Louis Leterrier's CLASH OF THE TITANS remake. The role was played by Harry Hamlin in director Desmond Davis' 1981 progenitor.

Worthington's become quite the Genre Boy these days, having recently filmed TERMINATOR SALVATION and James Cameron's AVATAR (whose previously rumored IMAX 3D release is now official, by the way).

Worthington's CLASH casting comes as Tarsem Singh is closing in on THE TUDORS' Henry Cavill to play the lead in WAR OF THE GODS (obviously unrelated to the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA episode of the same name).

The projects have different plots, but each film will be made for under $100 million because the visual effects will be accomplished using the greenscreen techniques that made "300" so visually arresting.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

And, yes, I know my headline really doesn't really work too well at all. (shrugs)...

so don't screw this remake up! I want Calibos, Charon, Kraken and Medusa, I want the prolific gore and nudity of the original (in what was a PG release!), a nod to the original music, and for all the 'monsters' to be based off their original Harryhausen designs! And Zeus had better still have that bitchin' action figure collection with playsets!

I have a lot of affection for the original, as I must have watched it ten zillion times on Showtime back in the early days of cable. I hope the designs don't stray too far from the original. The kraken should still look like Ymir 3000. I hope Medusa isn't too messed with either, let alone the mood in that scene. Actually, there are a lot of great moments in the film, it just drags between them. (Although I didn;t notice that when i was 7. I guess I'm less patient now than then.)

That I actually think deserves a remake. Don't get me wrong, I love the original and think Harryhausen did a great job with his claymation, but it looks soooo fake now (I saw it when i was a kid so i guess it was more believable). Anyway, an updated look with CGI will be awesome...but the casting needs to be perfect.

don't say Harryhausen and claymation in the same sentence. Those armatures are minature works of art, not to be confused with Wallace and Gromit...Rewatched the Harryhausen Chronicles recently and loved when after giving Ray his honorary Oscar, Tom Hanks said, in effect, "Some say Citizen Kane, some say Gone With The Wind, but for me the best movie of all time is Jason And The Argonauts.." God bless your geek heart Mr. Hanks.

    by skimn

Ray's swansong. His work was wonderful. It was the pacing, and acting that slowed things down, and the concession to add the R2D2 like Bubo was maddening. But compare the stop motion work of the same period, such as the TaunTauns and Imperial Walkers in Empire, or moreso, the dragon in Dragonslayer (with the innovative go-motion devices to add camera blur), and it appeared the students were surpassing the master.

    by royston lodge

The "300" style (funny, since it was Sky Captain that really got this bandwagon rolling) works great for comic book movies like, oh, say, 300. After all, you're working from source material that's highly stylized in the first place, so there's all sorts of technical liberties you can take with the motion picture. But Clash of the Titans "should" be a "realistic" looking fantasy film, like Lord of the Rings, shouldn't it?

I would prefer them to be made with practical effects w/ a little cgi thrown in, with FILM cameras which are on cranes and such and not fucking handheld, wide shots, real fucking locations, real fucking actors, and real sense of imagination instead of lazy CGI, green screen, video camera bullshit. Yeah, this remake should NOT use green-screen and NOT be shot like "300". I really liked the photography of "300", but dammmit...this is "Clash of the Titans"...treat it like "Lord of the Rings"! Build sets, shoot in real locations and of course, use WETA! Can you imagine what WETA could do? OMG! I hope they stick with Ray's designs, in some way. Im not a supporter of remakes, but holy shit this could rule, if done right. Make it rated R too =)

It should be epic, not constrained to a studio. But, honestly, it's nothing without Harryhausen's passion.
