Jack Black To Play Fox’s GULLIVER!!

Published at:  Nov 05, 2008 9:10:25 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Jack Black will play the title role in Fox’s new version of “Gulliver’s Travels,” based on Jonathan Swift’s 1726 tale of a fellow who finds in distant lands people of improbable size.

Rob Letterman (“Shark Tale”) directs from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller (“Fun With Dick And Jane,” “Yes Man”) and Joe Stillman ("Beavis & Butt-head," "King of the Hill," “Shrek,” "Shrek II"). Shooting starts in March.

Swift's tale has been adapted a zillion other times. Georges Méliès, of "A Trip To The Moon" fame, shot a silent version in 1902. Dave Fleisher, the director behind the theatrical "Superman" and "Popeye" shorts, brought an animated version of the tale to cinemas in 1939. The Japanese came up with 1965's "Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon." Ricahrd Harris played Gulliver in a 1977 live-action/animation hybrid. Ted Danson headlined a 1996 miniseries.

    Predictions:

    by thrillho77

    1. Jack Black plays Gulliver as a lovable, slightly slovenly goof ball, who's a BIT of a screw-up, but has a heart of gold.

    2. Gulliver says, "rip-a-tip-a-too-too" at least once. It may even be his catch phrase.

    3. Kyle Gass cameos as a lilliputian.

    OH DEAR GOD, WHY?!?

    by jmac4ever

When they asked Seth Rogen recently about himself appearing in the long-delayed "Ghostbusters 3", he said something surprisingly honest (I'm paraphrasing):

"Wow, that sounds like a terrible idea, doesn't it?"

Seth has realized, early in his career, that is comic counterparts have ruined themselves by overexposure and "comedy remakes". This is a realization that Jack Black should have come to right after "School of Rock" came out. Since then, it's all been downhill except for "Tropic Thunder" and that didn't make any money (it also provided a sad glimpse into Black's future, but that's for another day).

    by crankyoldguy

re-done as comedy? Yes, Swift's work was satire, but it was not comedy. I like Jack Black a lot in many films, especially the one where he wasn't trying so hard (y'know, with Kate Winslet; Cameron Diaz was her usual awful). And in his over-the-top shtick too at times. But Gulliver? Ugh.

I always hoped that one day...

    by biggusdickus

...some film-maker, Gilliam perhaps, would read Johnathan Swift's work, realise it was a socio-political satire (rather than just a 'big guy in the land of small guys' story) and make the film properlyMuch as I love Jack Black, I don't see this version breaking the mould. The least they could do is include Brobdingnag as well as Lilliput, though. Gulliver's juxtaposition is what makes the tale work. Not having him be the small guy is like reading 'A Clockwork Orange' and skipping the last chapter (like Kubrick did for his movie) - it takes away the whole point of the story.

Jack Black is much better suited to supporting roles, like High Fidelity. And if he's going to star, avoid "From the director of Shark Tale" like the plague. Re-team with Linklater. That worked.

....and the last thing I want to see is a 'comedy' version. Especially with Jack Black. He does dick and fart jokes - I don't see him in a satire that questions society and it's pecularities (war, money, the rich etc). He was the least funny aspect of Tropic Thunder where Tom Cruise ironcically stole the show.

Seriously. It gets right to the hits-you-like-a-ton-of-bricks end of the original story, and it figures out an ingenious, parallelized way to avoid the episodic-ness of the original. Danson, Steenburgen, Henson prods. impress.

    by dr.dirtyd

...Gulliver is very preoccupied with where he will go number 2 while he's with the Lilliput folk, and when he's with the Brobdingnag, when he's small, he's forced to walk around on the handmaidens nipples.
    And there's more...

Gulliver is very funny, and does often boarder on slapstick.

    by timbenzedrine

the flying city that takes him in that have their share of 'scat' humour too. One of the scientists is trying to solve the world hunger problem by extracting the nutritive content of shit (he's descibed as having REALLY bad teeth and breath)Later in the book he encounters the world of the Yahoos, who if I rember correctly choose their leaders based on the amount of feces they smear all over themselves. One section I always wanted to see played closer to the text was when he visited the land where no one dies, but continue to age.(and they don't age gracefully either)The Ted Danson version was a nice "family friendly version" of Swift's novel, and it derserves some credit for going beyond Liliput, where most versions stop. But Danson seemed to "clean cut" for a character like Gulliver, I always envisioned someone like Leeam Neesan(sp?)somebody with ordinary looks to play that part.
