I agree. I've enjoyed South Park this season, but it's missing the bite that usually elevates it. I enjoy a good guinea pig joke as much as everyone--and I was laughing pretty hard at the utter stupidity of last week's pigs-in-costumes. But in an election season as contentious as this and with the economy in turmoil, South Park has been strangely quiet. Let's hope tonight they go for the jugular. I'm an Obama supporter, but I'd love to see them go for him...it has been strangely lacking.

    by dr sauch

I can't fucking stand that show. It is seriously the most self-important garbage on television. They had the balls to make fun of Family Guy. Why, because Family Guy is irreverent and doesn't feel the need to felate the Daily Show-watching Onion-reading pretentious crowd? Let me say, I am an Obama-voting, tax-and-spend liberal, and I hate, hate, hate South Park and everything that those arrogant bastards stand for.

But yeah it clearly hasn't been one of the better seasons so far.
TBH they don't usually tackle real Politics much and seem far more comfortable with social and cultural satire. I certainly can't remember THAT much about Bush for example. Still, could be good I suppose.

They attacked Family Guy because the show has just become non sequitor references that have become lazy writing because there are no plots. They were upset with Family Guy because they make easy jokes rather than developing a story. They were pretty clear about that, and I couldn't agree more. I may laugh at Family Guy and think it's "funny", but I under no circumstances think the show is well written. That's the difference. Can't wait to see what they do tonight. And come on, Cartman, out of nowhere just coughing up underwear is a pretty ridiculous image this season.

Heavy Metal titties, the American Tail tribute, Canadian strike song, Randy trying to whack off to doodle porn, the pioneer village, Guniea bees... the absolute best had to be using Cartman as a metaphor for cancer. Matt and Trey had a great opportunity for sharp political satire, and all we get is "nothing's really going to change under Obama" and "it's not the end of the world that we elected him?" They could have done so much more. Maybe they will in the future.

airing an older South Park before the new one every week is such a terrible idea. It only has the effect of highlighting the glaring drop in quality, poignancy, and humor in the new ones as opposed to the old ones. I laughed my ass of at the crime fighter episode, which I've seen a thousand times, meanwhile I managed maybe one smirk from the new episode.

yeah, and for eight years liberals did nothing but compare Bush to Hitler, Satan, and/or the lochness monster. Point is, there's always over reaction on either side and that's the safest possible thing to "parody". There were SO many places they could have gone, they could have really reclaimed their status as "edgy" and "controversial" and not just by showing a man get raped, I mean by saying something relevant and challenging. And beyond all that, the shit just isn't very funny anymore. There's something about how they're writing these episodes and the difference is stark when you compare it to earlier seasons. In the end, my first priority with SP is that it's funny ,the second is that it's poignant. Recently, it's been neither. And why does every episode have to be a parody of a movie that came out between 1 and 7 years ago?

    by sometimes i guess

have you noticed that South Park has gone the way of Family Guy? The plots are ludicrous for ludicrous' sake with really no point to them at the end of the day. They draw up some ridiculous and overblown situation, which is fine, but at the end of the day they aren't saying anything. Like with this, I thought maybe they were trying to say that both McCain and Obama are establishment candidates and either way the people will get robbed blind, and this whole election, just like every one, is a big dog and pony show. Now that would have been saying something. But then I realized, no, they're just trying to make fun of Oceans 11. Lame. Fucking lame.

What a letdown! The best idea they could come up with to cap off this insane election season was a lame Ocean's 11 parody? I've been sticking up for South Park when people slag it in the TB's, but there's nothing to defend in this flaccid episode.
And the dead grandmother joke was WAY over the line.

  • Admittedly some of the supporters (on both sides) sections weren't too bad and raised a smile (extreme caricatures usually do) and Randy certainly had his moments, BUT the Oceans "parody" was 100% pure unfunny shit. Utterly pointless and craptacular.
Dead grandmother is a desperate attempt for some free publicity and a manufactured "shock" "outrage" headline or 2. And all the more pathetic for it. If you're going to try and shock (even if only for a headline or 2) have a fucking point or something to say at least.

    by gotilk

are like those people that used to say "rap isn't music". Like it needed to be. As if all things created and put on a CD needed to be music or fit the common description. As if the genre even wanted those people's approval.

So it doesn't have any big "stories" (usually)? Big deal, it's still funny. So is South Park. Love them both. I wouldn't say this one was memorable, but the last few have been damn funny. I was really hoping they would have shown Palin killing them all and taking the diamond right after her confession of love for Obama. And she should have worn Wolf carcasses while shooting them all from a helicopter. But I loved the British accent. The ending was just a bit weak.

I liked 'Sunny' a lot the first season, but have now come to the conclusion that they suffer from 'unexeperienced actor shouting syndrom'. There is just too much shouting, just because it is easiest refuge for somebody who doesn't know comedic acting. Hopefully they will tone it down a lot, because the show has shitloads of potential.

...And the episode poked fun at both Obama and McCain supporters -- c'mon, guys, open your eyes. The only criticism I have about the episode is that they should have had Biden, Cindy McCain, Todd Palin and Joe the Plumber as the other four co-conspirators... And while the Ocean's 11 subplot was just kinda silly, kudos to them for showing the diehard Obama and McCain supporters their idiocy. When all the Obama zombies are done chanting "Yes We Can", "Hope", "Change", they're going realize that it's nothing but platitudes and empty promises. Likewise, the McCain doomsayers are going to realize that their guy wasn't gonna do much better. Only difference between the two is that one's a big-government liberal and the other's a big-government conservative.

I'm a making a note here: Huge Success! But really, finally, a decent genuinely satirical episode. It's sad they still felt the need to make use a popular movie to do it (they are falling back on movie plots A LOT)it was still a really solid episode. Possibly the only one this season. And for the record, the Indy episode sucked. Huge.

    Finally, a good episode

    by _maltheus_

I loved it. My favorite part was Randy telling off his boss because an Obama victory means that "everything has changed." Politics aside, this messiah complex, cult of personality thing Obama has going on is only going to disappoint a lot of people when reality is forced to intrude. I think they really captured the insanity on both sides real well, without coming across as preachy. In other words, it was a classic episode. A nice change from that crappy two-parter from last week.

it doesn't matter if Oceans 11 isn't topical, thats not the point. It wasn't arbitrary like maybe the Cloverfield eps were but instead a perfect template for the type of story they wanted to tell. by ace of knaves

I love IASIP dearly, never miss an episode, but the fact is nothing on television makes me laugh out loud more consistently than The Office. IASIP is 'edgier" or whatever, that doesnt make it funnier. The key is that the office no matter how outlandish the situations and characters, really sells you that this is really happpening, IASIP just always seems like youre watching gifted comedians doing improv, desperately trying to keep your attention in some sweaty nightclub, so theyre always turned up to 10. The Office is pure naturalistic, grating hilarity. end of story. On the subjest os last nite's SP, brilliant considering its head spinning up-to-the-last-minute topicality, they must have been writing and animating that shit the previous morning, for that i salute them

    U-Stu, you're changing your argument

    by mrd

"Exercising your freedom of speech" is not the same as "speaking your mind". Freedom of speech was especially meant to protect political speech, and you CAN excercise it as a matter of patriotism, but you can also exercise it to say how much you hate the country. Or does somehow saying "I hate the country" make you a patriot, too? As for your cowardice remark, that's just insulting to thousands of people who are content in their views but don't feel the need to push them on others. Different people have different temperments. That's not cowardice.

    Always Sunny in Philadelphia

    by badmrwonka

here is my plea that I e-mailed to Herc a while back. never heard back...

    Herc,

My name's Will, but I lurk and comment in the talkbacks as BadMrWonka. I've been around forever, and I love the site and what you guys do.

I know that throughout most every talkback, you are inundated with requests for talkbacks for other shows that don't have one. Obviously, not every show can have a talkback, and although there are some shows that deservedly have one because of their geek appeal, there are others that might have similar geek appeal but not enough popularity. And some shows, like SNL and The Office, deservedly have a standing talkback just because they generate so much hilarious discussion, and people love to argue over funny moments, etc.

So I understand there is not one set of criteria for which shows get talkbacks, and I'm sure there are a host of behind the scenes housekeeping issues which contribute to the process as well. I know that some shows without talkbacks also have lots of discussions in The Zone as well. That said, I feel compelled to plead the case for a talkback for my current favorite show on television, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Instead of a long and rambling diatribe on why I think it's so funny and creative, since that's always going to be subjective, I thought I would just hit some bullet points as to why this show would be perfect for a talkback.

-The talkbackers love it, and it's on Thursday nights along with The Office. I know SO MANY people who watch The Office and then look forward to the 10pm It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia afterwards on FX. It's like the heydey of great Thursday night TV that NBC had back in the day!

-Much like The Office, the show has really embraced online content, viral marketing, blogs, etc. in order to broaden its fan base, and make sure every bit of hilarity gets an outlet somewhere. AICN is a big part of that community, and I'm sure if there were a weekly talkback, reaching out to some of the creators for an interview or contest or what have you, would be that much easier. I wrote a funny little post for a friend's website about the show, and it was actually seen by one of the cast members, who took the time to write me and tell me she thought it was funny. That's pretty damn cool.

-The show really is unique. It started off as a very small show with a shoestring budget. It wasn't commissioned and marketed on the scale that a lot of shows are. FX just took a chance with it, and on the strength of its first hilarious season, they were able to land Danny DeVito for the second season. Great DVD sales mean that it's gonna hopefully be around for a while. It's a really odd mixture of Office-like character interaction, Reno 911-like improvisation, and South Park-like irreverence and depravity. Since The Office and South Park both have talkbacks, why not give one to the bastard lovechild of the two?

-If you create a new talkback based in part on clamoring from the talkbackers, you will be everyone's hero!

OK, that's all. I hope you'll consider giving this hilarious show a talkback. It will make the world a better place, fix the economy and save the rain forests.

    by eppdude

With the early poling, I'm sure much of the show was done before the election results even came in.
I'm sure they just added the stuff in at the beginning from Obama and McCain's speeches.
The rest could have already been done because Obama was all but a sure thing.

    by tallboy66

It was just pure absurdity and a pop-culture satire, mostly about Oceans 11-- which was great and bizarre. Kind of like how everyone said that Team American was a political satire, but it was just a huge Bruckhimer bash. I agree with you whole heartedly. But I'm afraid your plea will go without action. The current season is halfway through, and unless Joss Whedon is involved in any way, shape, or form, Sunny will go "non-TB'd" around here, at least by Herc.BTW, you did know that FX ordered, I believe, three more seasons following this year. And do you find it odd to watch knowing that in real life Caitlin and Mac have just married...? It adds a weird vibe to watch them treat Dee like a total shit, knowing that.

    by anakin whoopass

Whatever you think of the episode, the speed of recreating and animating the speeches, down to backgrounds and clothing as it really appeared, is impressive. As for the rest, I think most the story would have been the same with characters and campaign logos switched around. They have to deliver the episode by 10 AM to Comedy Central

    by tallboy66

10 AM Wednesday - lets say the speeches happen at midnight 12 AM, which was probably the final stuff they were holding onto - which gives them about 10 hrs to animate and record dialouge - which in South Park production time is, like, a breeze.

many people here. I think what most of you wanted was some brutal political satire (which has not been in short supply this year)- mostly targeting Obama (not coincidentally, those who hate the show seem to be largely Pro-O), and yet it is precisely this inability to disconnect from an ended election, the inability to step back from the partisan hyperbole, that the show was mocking.

What ? A straight COPY is now "skewering" ??? Riiiiiight

    by g100

Jeesus get a fucking grip. At least the cloverfield Episode strayed into PARODY once in a while.
It pointed out again and again how ludicrous the idea of someone clinging desperately to a cam is when ubelievably catastrophic and dangerous shit is happening around you.
It also made the point that being STARTLED (the clue was in the fucking title) or merely surprised by something is different from genuine horror. The guinea pigs were highlighting that almost ANYTHING can be horrific if it mutilates and destroys on a grand scale just by the framing of it in a movie.
And it ended with the ultimate punchline of a "found footage". film. There was no tape in the cam.
Course that doesn't mean it was a brilliant Episode (it wasn't) but at least it was TRYING.
See that means it was making POINTS not just blindly copying the style of something like the totally random Oceans section was.
The Oceans bit was shit. Simple as that.
The supporters bit was FAR better and the Episode would have been pretty damn good if it was just about the supporters.
And the Grandmother reference wasn't just pointless but STUPID. There was a perfect place in the Episode to put in a reference to faking someones death. Ike would have deleted all the files and accidently deleted the Grandmothers then said "oops." Would it have been any funnier ? Not much but it would have made more fucking sense than a Random Bomb threat line insertion.
And for fucks sake! a Bomb Threat !! and they DIDN'T think of having their Obama say "my friend Bill Ayres phoned a Bomb threat in ?????" Fucking obvious chance for a gag missed.
Let me be clear though, as horribly patchy as this season has been South Park is still (when it's good) far better than Family Guy or The Simpsons.
I pretty much gave up on Family guy not long ago and haven't watched the Simpsons in years.
And if you DIDN'T think that there was some Bizzarre convoluted plot coming as soon as Obama walked into the Hotel room after the Election then you simply don't know South Park very well.
So it's not that a strange plot twist was unexpected, just that it was shit.
It could have been Obama removing a "Black suit" and turning out to be... (take your pick) and McCain doing the same. OR Obama and McCain could have been Robots controlled by... (again take your pick) OR Aliens or 1000 other possibilities. But a copy of Oceans ??? Yeah that's REAL fucking funny dude.
you want Funny Election Parodies The Simpsons Kang and Kodos and Futuramas "A head in the Polls" are still Golden.

I enjoyed it more before the suits shoehorned Danny DeVito into the cast, but it's still the funniest show on TV right now. I imagine FX must have thought that the show needed a "name", but the cast of relative unknowns makes the show. The less DeVito appears the better.
