Quint needs suggestions for the annual Holiday Shopping Guide!!!

Published at:  Nov 04, 2008 8:20:25 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It’s that time of year again… the leaves are changing color… not here, in Texas, but elsewhere, I’m sure… the cold weather is just starting and since it’s a couple of days after Halloween now every department store, grocery store, mall and pharmacy are filled to the brim with Christmas shit.

Useless Christmas shit, more than not.

For the last... what? Five years? I think five years… anyway, for a long while I’ve been spending my Novembers searching the internet for the best geek shit and compiling them all into a series of massive articles that are posted right on Thanksgiving Day, the day before Black Friday. It’s my annual Holiday Shopping Guide, but I can’t do it alone.

I need you folks to email me your ideas. I’m open to everything. DVDs, electronics, toys, models, action figures, geek furniture of all sorts, clothes, video games, art, books, any kind of collectibles, crazy shit for my “For The Super Rich Only” category... I need your thoughts and suggestions. I'm looking for what you're personally drooling for this year with a special interest in the really unique ideas.

And if you work for a company with something you really think is right for the Guide, I'm also interested in hearing from you. Any and all suggestions! Now's the time!

Here’s a link to last year’s Guide so you guys can see what I’m going for.

I look forward to your suggestions!

-Quint

Make your Own Latex Monster Mask or go 3D CGI

    by dracula_wants_the_amulet

Monster Makers dot com Mask Makers kit. It has everything you need to sculpt paint and make a wearable latex mask. It comes with a book on how to sculpt it as well...

Basic Mask Makers Kit pick the $195 version. Don't get the $175 one you wont be able to make a mold or build a wall for the 2 part mold with the EM217 clay.
    http://tinyurl.com/5uujvg

Go Deluxe and you get an air brush! Cost for the Deluxe is $395

    Zbrush 3.1
    http://tinyurl.com/563vpt

The same tool ILM, Weta, Gentle Giant Studios, and Electronic Arts use to sculpt characters for films toys and games.

All of the digital Monsters in the Mist movie were made with it. Just about every Gentle Giant bust is made with it, and the best part of all is the price.

$595 dollars is all you need to enter this world of digital sculpting. compared to other programs that retail for 3 grand, and those programs don't even offer the intuitive level of digital sculptery that Zbrush does.

The community forum is full of generous helpful users, and theres tons of guides, tips and tricks and lessons, so you can learn the program quicker.

If you ever had a passing interest in Digital Characters.

This is the first program you should learn if you want to make them. Even better you don't need a Mega Powerful PC to run the program. If it runs Vista and has 2 gigs of Ram or more- You're good to go! No need for a mega expensive graphics card. The program is Ram dependant.

Those are my suggestions. Every year we give out gifts like games and films, and those are cool, but what about a gifts that teach a skill- thats fun, never becomes boring, and may one day lead to a really kick ass job as a creature/character creator... These are those kinds of gifts for the monster and creature fan geeks.

Sideshow collectibles SELLS OUT of pricy stuff. People trading up on cell phones. Restraunts busy. I have yet to see fantastic steals on E-Bay. When I can buy an Alex Ross "Knight Over Gotham" print on E-Bay for less than $500, then the economy will be bad. I just don't see people in such a bind that they are willing to sell their over-priced toys.

    Every year I suggest this

    by quentintarantado

since the start of your holiday guide. oh well, lemme try again. Virgin Galactic is selling tickets for trips to space. Now, it isn't available now, but you can reserve for space (pun intended) when the trips finally start. Cost is $200,000 per person. Check out their website: http://tinyurl.com/5hnvh6
Side bonus: if the mission fails, you become a member of the very exclusive toasted marshmallow club that a few astronauts and even fewer civilians have joined.
here's something a little more conventional: The world's second fastest production car: The Bugatti Veyron which costs $1.3 million with a top speed of 253.81 mph, you can buy here: http://tinyurl.com/4npb4d or the world's fastest (Guinness World Record confirmed) production car, American, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, with a top speed of 256.18 mph, and a price tag of a mere $485,000. Buy American, I guess. Visit it here: http://tinyurl.com/ahz7f

But I think one of the best is the "annoyatron". It's a tiny, concealable device that makes an annoying BEEP sound in VARYING intervals from like 2 to 8 minutes. As soon as they think they've timed it out and can predict when it will beep again, it does it at a different interval, making it almost impossible to pinpoint, location-wise. Huge fun.

    by continentalop

Even though DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD and Angelus Rex have been ripping me a new one, I agree with their assessment that you should make the list a little bit reasonable this year. While luckily I am doing OK right now, Christmas is still two months away and a lot can happen between now and then. Plus, many of my friends and loved ones are struggling right now, so I would love to be able to put something on my list they can actually afford. And if I make a suggestion for a present that fits my earlier comment about keeping fit, I recommend the book "Becoming Batman: the Possibility of a Superhero."

I guess I deserve that zinger for my bad set up to my suggestion. However, the book is an explanation about how one becomes Batman. It explains how much training and working out would be required for, using science to glean cues as to how Bruce Wayne got to where he is. While I am not delusional enough to think I can wear a cape and fight crime, it does motivate me enough to get out of the house and work out again, rejoin martial arts and become more active. That is why I suggested it.

    cheap suggestions

I always make sure to include as much sub-$30 things as I can. Those are the majority of the entries, actually, but part of the fun of the column for me is the window-shopping aspect. There's some really cool expensive shit out there... but never fear, I'm looking for real, tangible gift options. Keep the suggestions coming. The response has been incredible so far!

I remember just being inspired by that Space Ghost desk a few years ago. Mind blowing! Even though I could never afford it.

Don't worry, I never took anything you wrote as being a serious insult or anything, just a little harmless ribbing. As for the working out, I just got done seeing my trainer and puking, so I am going to look at that as a positive accomplishment today.
