Paramount kept cranking out the theatrical shorts without the Fleischers until August 1957. The next disc could potentially hold the 36 shorts released between 1944 and 1948. At this two-disc-per-volume pace we should get a total of six or seven volumes before the theatrical shorts are exhausted. And even then, there are the 200 original King Features Popeye cartoons aired on TV in 1961 and 1962.

Unless I did the math wrong, Home Movies: The Complete Series saves us no money over the individual season sets. So the two new extras – a canvas book bag and a clapper – better be worth the extra $4 or so they’re charging. Whether you buy the seasons separately or in the new megaset, know that the series itself – semi-improvised in the fashion of “Dr. Katz” and “The Life and Adventures of Tim” – is brilliant and well worth the money.

“Reaper” began life with a terrific pilot, the best of The CW’s sophomore year, but the balance of the show’s first season never recaptured the big funny found in that first episode. The rest remained watchable – thanks largely to a horny succubus, a couple of guys from The State playing gay rogue demons, and “Twin Peaks” standout Ray Wise’s winning, avuncular portrayal of Satan -- but falls short of the classic status for which I originally believed it destined.

To anticipate the question, “Reaper” begins its second season on the CW early next year.

Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series is controversial because it’s currently the only way fans can get hold of the series’ fourth and final season. Which bites if you’ve already bought seasons one through three separately.

New series megasets continue to rain onto store shelves as Chrismas approaches. The math:

Batman: The Complete Animated Series
Volume One: $37.99
Volume Two: $37.99
Volume Three: $35.99
Volume Four: $34.99
Sold separately: $146.96
New Megaset: $75.99
Net savings: $70.99

Get Smart: The Complete Series
Season One: $16.99
Season Two: $49.00
Season Three: $50.99
Season Four: $42.94
Season Five: $35.95
Sold separately: $195.87
New Megaset: $139.99
Net savings: $55.88

The Wild Wild West
Season One: $28.99
Season Two: $28.99
Season Three: $35.99
Season Four: $34.99
Sold separately: $128.96
New Megaset: $90.99
Net savings: $37.97

Herc’s Popular Pricing Pantry

“Carnivale” is momentarily 60% off. That means $23.99/Season
.

“The Greatest American Hero” for $11/Season?? The new Two-For-One TV-On DVD Sale makes such a thing feasible.

The same sale allows one to pick up both animated Hellboy movies for $5.25/Each!!

Oh, and please give Reaper a little bit more credit!

    by derlanghaarige

It's not just constantly funny and entertaining, the writers were also smart enough to avoid some popular mistakes of other shows! They built up story arcs without scaring the casual viewer away or - maybe the smartest move - they let the love interest find out what's going on after 2/3 of Season 1!

    M*A*S*H Slimsets...

    by film_fanatic_in_the_original_black_and_w

Now I'm confused. I just bought the first two seasons of these slimsets at Wal-Mart over a week ago, but yet according Amazon, they're not even released until next week? What's the deal with that?

  • I thought the Beast transfer looked better, this was a funnier story though and as always having Futurama back is a treat.

    Reaper...

    by gislef_crow

While it never became a classic/classic, it was still better than 9/10ths of what was on last year. It was (and hopefully still will be) written by people who know how to run a story arc without having their characters act like idiots, and to slowly develop a mythology for the series without either a) stretching out the basic issues ad infinitum, or b) answering everything in one season. It had some flaws (the green card subplot with Ben sucked royally: they still don't seem to know what to do with him), and you kinda wonder why Sam's younger brother did a Chuck Cunningham (maybe it was deliberate?). It's got a good supporting cast (Christine Willes!, the aforementioned Tony and Steve). They already moved beyond the "soul of the week" concept: they keep item, but it's a prod to tell the real stories, not the stories themselves. And it actually has something to say about heaven and hell, good and evil. In a way that Supernatural is just getting into.

    by skimn

I liked it, but gave up on the soul of the week concept. Too soon! Quit before Tony and Steve and their plot against Satan came onboard. I'll have to play catchup with the second half of the season. I have to give the network kudos for a 2nd season. And it's nice to see what folk like Ron (Tremors, City Slickers) Underwood are up to nowadays.

    MORE Columbo!!

    by wcme

Wow! I had thought that the remaining later tv movies had been abandoned! YES! These werent as good as the classics, but we are a content away from KNIGHT RIDER 2008 standards for later elements of a classic series. Does this mean the final season of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA is at last going to be released? and while I am at it, Why not THE ROPERS and THREES A CROWD. LOL! (Seriously, I am sure you all have a top 5 that still isnt on dvd, mine are BATMAN, GREEN HORNET, SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, BIONIC WOMAN, and, of all things, the 60's Marvel comics cartoons like THOR AND IRON MAN. I did manage to get gold with the remastered 67 SPIDERMAN classic cartoons, so why not? I guess as a sn alternate, the H/B FANTASTIC FOUR from the 60's.)

    WILD, WILD WEST

    by thegreatwhatzit

Never mind the shitty Will Smith movie. The original series was bizarre (in a good way)...a hybrid of traditional Western, Jules Verne, pulp and Norman Saunders graphics. Very addictive; I hope someone else, in the next half century, develops a worthy (movie) adaptation.

    Reaper, Soul of the Week

    by gislef_crow

Well, they're still hunting souls most weekends, but it's usually a supplement to something else. Like in "Hungry For Fame" when they capture the soul, and use it to convince Jamie Kennedy's schmuck he shouldn't make a deal with the Devil. "Greg, Schmeg" is the first and only one without an escaped soul. But it eventually becomes more like the B plot.

    at all costs.
The packaging is so horrid that 13 of 20 discs were floating free in the box.
HIT also removed the cool extras found in the first three sets and replaced them with bunk poster of Fraggle Rock.

I am excited about- Batman: The Animated Series, Spin City, and (don't laugh) America's Test Kitchen. Mainly Batman but good to see that Spin City is getting individual seasons on DVD instead of lame "Best of" compilation DVDs. America's Test Kitchen is on PBS. Check it out sometime. Very educational and it will make you hungry. G'nite.

I got no idea. So far nothing has been announced. Nobody even knows why they release it in Germany first. It's probably because it's even more popular than Spongebob over here and Super RTL, the channel that airs the show in Germany, even made a deal to distribute exclusive merchandising, but if it will ever be released in Germany? Sorry, no idea so far.

Kim Possible is an amazingly creative, entertaining show -- why Disney releases some of the most incidental dreck to DVD, but completely ignores a series that was extremely popular for several years is beyond me. You CAN get the first season from itunes, but not on DVD. Makes NO sense to me whatsoever.

    Amen brother!

    by derlanghaarige

Sometimes I feel that Disney even was ashamed of it and didn't realized KPs potential. It has lots of fans of all ages all over the world, but has always been treated like a midseason replacement or something. Yes, they renewed it for one more year after it got cancelled in 2005, but imagine what would have happened if they would have promoted it like High School Musical! (Or maybe just like Phineas & Ferb!) Well, maybe they make another movie or two. Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle are now working for Nickelodeon, but they stated in a chat that they were allowed to work on a KP movie, if Disney shows interest.

i agree. i have the 1st two seasons of WWW but really think they should have put the wild wild west movies on the last one. (or did they? wer'nt they like two of them-possibly 3?) the mind forgets. i mean, hell they put that time tunnel movie onto the time tunnel series so.....also agree on the choices of green hornet (bruce lee tie-in) and the bionic shows. problem with the bionics is there were several cross-over eps between six and bionic so how would you do that as far as releasing season DVDs? Not all that fired up for Batman TOS for some reason. Also i really need to pick up those 15.00 Angel/Buffy sets at Wal-mart cause i have a weird feeling that their not going to restock those when there gone. Also Circuit Cities are being phased out. Does anyone know when their measly 10-30% offs will go to like 50-60% on all the crap they have left? Picked up the 2 disc-Blade Runner for like 12.00 yesterday but headged on Alien Resurrection (as i have the first three) even though it was only like 7-8 bucks. didn't want to spend 20.00 in one day. (sorry, Josh Whedon)
