Trailer for Danny Boyle's amazing SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE hits the internet!

Published at:  Nov 02, 2008 2:50:00 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This trailer hit a couple days ago, so apologies for the delay time getting his posted. I can only blame the evil spirits that invaded AICN on All Hallows Eve.

I saw Danny Boyle's latest film, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, a couple weeks ago now and I'm still reeling from it. It's an amazingly emotional movie that'll hit you square in the chest. One of the pleasures of the experience for me was going in knowing nothing about it other than 1) Danny Boyle and 2) the title.

So, if you're the type that is sold just on Danny Boyle's name alone, then I would suggest avoiding the trailer if you can and just going in cold. But the trailer isn't all that spoilery, so no harm in giving it a view.

Hopefully I'll have my review written up soon. In the meantime, here's the trailer over at YahooMovies:

    by supertoyslast

Considering that Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions and Sunshine are completely different from each other it seems quite strange to compare them to each other. No doubt Slumdog will be something different again. Although I do find it strange that the main point of comparison for a film is completely different types of film by the same director. Why not other films in the same genre or by the same writer? Is the director now considered to be the sole creative force behind a film?

All I'd heard about it before was that it was about an indian kid going on who wants to be a millionaire and I wasnt that bothered. But the whole aspect of him knowing the answers because of moments in his life as if he were destined to win is a much more interesting concept.

... Many years ago, I bumped into him at a really nice restaurant when I was having dinner with my friends. We said Hi and he walked over, talked with us and asked us what he should do next with his movies etc and we were starstruck at his down-to-earth nature, his humility and his attitude. Kudos to him for taking on this role with Danny Boyle. This movie looks really amazing.

Sunshine, 28DL and Millions without substance?

    by yo mom's goat

Amy Chasing... c'mon now. Maybe you didn't LIKE the films, but to say they were without substance.

Then again, film is so subjective. What do I know? Except that I cry like a girl everytime I watch Millions, have a spiritual experience everytime I watch Sunshine and get inspired to immediate social activism everytime I watch 28 Days Later.

My book? Danny Boyle is a legitimate genius. And I'm not a film nerd. I'm just a guy who likes movies like Aliens and Tombstone and Die Hard.

This can't open soon enough. Eyes watered up just watching the trailer.

    by cobbio

I bet this'll be a good film, but that trailer, especially the music, was horribly cloying and overblown. Jesus, can I get a little less smashing of my face with cheesy, predictable melodrama?
I'm a fan of Danny Boyle, don't get me wrong. He's done a lot of good work. The trailer is what made me cringe. If I didn't know this film was directed by Boyle, I would've stopped the trailer as soon as that horrible music pitched into cheesy overdrive.
Hopefully the next trailer for this film won't make me cringe.

    by garbageman33

Saw this at the Toronto Film Festival. The first half is, indeed, amazing. But once they become adults, it veers into melodrama. Plus, the child actors are so damn good you kinda don't want to see them grow up. I'd say the best comparison is City of God. But not nearly as good. Oh, and Danny Boyle seems to be a pretty awesome guy. I saw him at two more movies during the festival. Not in the roped off reserved seats. With the rest of the ticket-buying public. I thought that was really cool.

    by echobase

It was a BAFTA preview a couple of days ago.
The film's a beauty! Not only it looks absolutely amazing, but it's also a lovely love story... yes, you head me right... A love story, or rather a fairy tale!
The structure of the film is the most interesting part of it. The fluidy through which it flows from flashbacks to present time is something I have rarely seen...
and finally 5 star ratings to all actors, especially the little boys.
One of my favourite films of the year

    by chaplinatemyshoe

The camera and editing are the stars. The writing and acting are just alright. I think it's only comparable to City of God in that it is similarly kinetic and does a great job of capturing atmosphere. But City of God's writing and story were light years ahead of Slumdog. Not dissing this film, I just think highly of City of God. Oh, and I really, really hope that someone is smart enough to actually give Irfan Khan something to do in a movie. The dude is just waiting to knock one out of the park if someone gives him the material do it.

I'm probably preaching to the choir of a different religion, but

    by amy chasing

I'll explain my previous statement. To me Sunshine was all audio/visual spectacle let down by bad story (I found the crew, science and ending all unbelievable). 28 Days Later was a zombie flik - a good zombie flik, but still just a zombie flik (not the second coming as some people make out). I liked Millions. It was cute but the ending was confused (how and why were all the people lined up outside their front door at midnight?) and ultimately just another family flik with, again, some nice audio/visuals to boot.

Oh Danny Boy...le, the fans, the fans are stalling.

They say you're great, but of that I'm yet to see.

Trainspotting was cool, but not exactly memorable.

I hope Slumdog is as great as they say it's meant to be.

Um, right. As for best films of 2007. Well it wasn't exactly as good as this year, but there was still No Country For Old Men, Ratatouille, 3:10 To Yuma, Atonement, & Hot Fuzz. All of which I enjoyed easily more than *bloody* Sunshine.

    Re: Amy Chasing

    by chaplinatemyshoe

I actually have similar issues with Danny Boyle features. I think he has major third act issues in nearly all his movies. I think Trainspotting is probably one of the ten most overrated movies of the 90s. I thought Millions was great until the ending veered off into what felt like a promo for saving the children of Africa. Sunshine and 28 Days Later would good features that veered of into poor ones at the end. Slumdog Millionaire just doesn't have the same issues. It is not a great movie, but it's a very good one. I think I can safely say it's the best movie Boyle's ever made.

    well, ok, Trainspotting was memorable-ish...

    by amy chasing

But mainly because the posters found their way onto every university campus in England and so the film pretty much single-handedly saved the British film industry that year.

The point of the endings to 28 DAYS and SUNSHINE...

    by chishu_ryu

(spoilers) ...was that amid the more obvious genre threat of "virus-infected zombies" or a dying sun, the humans were the biggest threat to themselves. In 28 Days it was the rogue Army unit with the insane megalomaniac commander, and in Sunshine, it was the insane megalomaniac commander of Icarus I. It's like classic Kubrick. In the end, humans, complex fucked-up creatures that we are, our own worst enemies.

Slumdog, Boyle's take on another film genre...

    by chishu_ryu

It seems like Mr. Boyle has been making his own versions of popular movie genres, like the zombie movie or space sci-fi, so looks like Slumdog Millionaire is his version of a Bollywood flick...fun...

    Sure Chishu_Ryu, but

    by amy chasing

the execution of those endings was nothing special for 28 Days and nonsensical for Sunshine.

As for being like classic Kubrick (bit of a tautology there)... I'm afraid you're going to have to elaborate.

    Chasing Amy

    by chishu_ryu

I guess the most literal comparison of Boyle's film to a Kubrick film would be Dr. Strangelove, where the main adversary amid all the kookiness is the delusional Army general who feels his purity of essence is at stake. The point, I guess, of a lot of those Kubrick films, like The Killing, Lolita, Barry Lyndon, 2001, Eyes Wide Shut, that no matter how well we lay our plans down or create a flawless operating system, in the end, we are imperfect human beings, and some way or another, it's all going to come crashing down. Again, the idea of us being our own monkey wrench thrown into the well-oiled gears.

Ok, I see what you mean. I wouldn't say it's the point of 2001, but it's A point of it.

Phew, for a moment there I thought you might be comparing Boyle's film-making skills to Kubrick. Boyle's good. He's certainly not _that_ good.

    by cobbio

I basically agree with Amy Chasing about Boyle. He's done some impressive work, but to me has never hit one out of the park.
I enjoyed "Trainspotting" and "28 Days Later," but as a science fiction fan, I was hugely disappointed by "Sunshine." The actors and visuals were impressive, but for such a large-scale, earth-is-dying buildup, the movie got silly and by the end made no sense at all. If you're going to make science fiction, make science fiction. Don't venture into supernatural lala land and expect me to stay interested. I thought Boyle hugely missed the mark with it.
But I'm hoping "Slumdog Millionaire" is a more complete film.
