I seem to remember comparing Jude Law's look to that of a riverboat gambler or Doc Holliday, and sending a little love to Nicol "Merlin" Williamson's portrayal of Holmes (with Robert Duvall [!] as Watson) in the 7% Solution.

It looks as though Robert Downey Jr. is going for a House sort of look for Sherlock Holmes... gaunt, unshaven, dressed pretty well but kind of rumpled. It's just funny because House is such a direct homage to Sherlock Holmes that it feels like this is coming full circle.

Downey vs Ritchie? Sorry, but as good as Downey always is this has talentless bovver-boy Guy Ritchie at the helm. This is gonna suck big time. I like Law's look in this and he only ever works in supporting roles i find and i love Downey so i'm hoping for a good movie but i don't think for a second that come November 20 next year that's what we'll get.

    Cocaine Holmes

    by jcrash

Could work is the play up the cocaine addicted aspect. He most often used cocaine in a seven-percent solution—sometimes habitually—especially when he lacked stimulating cases, despite his disapproval of the use of opium. Downey can play an addict in his sleep, and he's witty and sharp enough to pull this off. I think it has potential despite Guy's over-stylization sensibilities. Rocknrolla looks like trash tho(in that Shoot-em Up, Smokin' Aces kind of way), and has probably the stupidest name I've heard for a movie in a long time.

    by iammrmonkey!

The guy can play intelligent, charming types in his sleep. He's already proved he can do a great English accent and he's even got the drug-filled past to fall back on.If anything, you should not be buying Guy "I Can Only Do Modern Day British Gangster Movies" Richie as the director. If he pulls off a good Sherlock Holmes movie, I'll break all of the Madonna albums in my local music shop for him.

    The deerstalker cap...

    by vlad the inhaler

... is only worn by Holmes when traveling in rural areas or the countryside. Otherwise, when in the city, he dresses as a Victorian-era gentleman would -- suit & tie; overcoat; hat. By the way, the deerstalker was never identified as such by Conan Doyle; it was from a Sidney Paget illustration that William Gillette took the idea for his Sherlock Holmes stage show. (The "Sherlockian" curved pipe was also Gillette's contribution -- he found it too hard to say his dialogue with a straight pipe clenched between his teeth.)

And I don't buy Downey as Holmes either, no more so than I do Guy Ritchie as the filmmaker to bring the great detective back to the screen.

    Holmes isn't a medical doctor

    by judderman

Watson is. Holmes was only ever interested in crime. He's deeply into forensics, but that's it. Holmes was BASED on a medical doctor, Joseph Bell, but is not one himself. The grubbiness actually suits his character; Holmes is meant to be slovenly in his habits, because he's so inwardly focused.

Downey doesn't "feel like Holmes". But he's genius so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. This is the first flick with Jude Law in it that I'm looking forward to since Gattaca! I cannot stand him, but I have to admit, he looks pretty bad-ass as Watson. Guy Ritchies the worry here. If this stinks, his career is over.

    Who is Moriarty in this?

    by grand moff toht

Does anyone know? And why is Holmes 5 feet tall? And why does it appear no one working on this film has given a glance to the Sidney Paget drawings that accompanied the stories when first published? The makers of the Brett series literally brought some of those classic illustriations to vivid life on the TV episodes. There's really no need to make any more Sherlock Holmes after Jeremy Brett. Nothing else can compare, either to his interpretation or to the episodes which were so faithful to the original stories. Definitely not this revisionist-looking shite. Also a nod to Basil Rathbone, who perfectly embodied Holmes even if he was stuck in silly B movies with a bumbling Watson. Ultimately, this new production seems rather... unnecessary. Irrelevant.

There is no Moriarty apparently. The main badguy seems to be played by Mark Strong (up and coming British actor who's been receiving lots of good reviews for his work in Body Of Lies and Rock'N'Rolla.) I believe his character's name will be Lord Blackwood although it's always possible that it could be an alias for Moriarty i guess.

adapted from a graphic novel that isn't even out yet?

    by notgeorgekaplan

ok, so whenever someone says "this doesn't look anything like sherlock holmes" he get's the reply "this is not based on the actual novels be conan doyle but on the graphic novel by lionel wigram". since now i have never questioned this explanation but today i tried to google this graphic novel only to find out, that it hasn't even been released yet and seems to be only written as a tool to get the movie out. and this from a guy whose sole writing credits ist this holmes script? i'm not even sure what i'm trying to say here. maybe it's just to explain to myself, that this is in fact NOT a comic book adaptation but a mere re-invention of holmes by guy ritchie and the only holmes vibe i get so far from ist is jude laws dr. watson.

    by mrmajestic

As much as I have learned to love RDJ since Kiss Kiss Bang Bang he won't be able to hold a candle next to Brett's Holmes. As smart as Downey must be and can act he simply can't compare to Jeremy Brett's fiery intellect that seemed to shoot out of his eyes like lasers. Heck even when it comes to being messed up wasn't Jeremy Brett bi-polar?

    Brett and Rathbone...

    by jazzdownunder

..ca't hold a candle against Clive Merrison and the BBC Radio dramatisation of the complete Sherlock Holmes stories. They of course had the benefit of the images all being in the listener's head. Just as the BBC Radio adaption of The Lord of the Rings was definitive of that work (with Ian Holmes as Frodo no less, who of course appeared as BILBO in the movie).

All the best movies are on the radio.

    :)

(that being said, PJ's LOTR was awesome, and being quite familiar with the CHARACTERs of Holmes and Watson, as opposed to being hung up on ILLUSTRATIONS of those characters, I am very comfortable with RDJ and Law in these roles, especially Law)

    by drath

Personally I'd love to seem them try to capture the traditional Sherlock Holmes with modern production values rather than something that's almost not Sherlock Holmes. I know that's not sexy enough for those with a taste for scandal, but jeesh, NOTHING is sacred anymore.

I cycle thru Brompton Cemetary every day and watched them build their set there, the made 2 fake shinx either side of an entrance down to the crypts and built a fake stone slab and a wooden winch over it, they closed it all for filming though so couldnt get any snaps.
