Jon Favreau officially Directing IRON MAN & Producing THE AVENGERS - & Don Cheadle is stepping in for Terrence Howard!
Hey folks, Harry here - The other day I was reading the New York Times - and came across a paragraph that gave me pause. They were talking about Obama's closing speech in Ohio - that he gave yesterday, and how Obama's chief speechwriter Jon Favreau was hard at work crafting it. Now, I realize there's probably many different Jon Favreau's of the world, but then I thought - well Orson Welles worked with FDR... It is possible. But I wrote Jon to see if he was moonlighting as the best speech writer in politics today - and he confirmed that he was in Bora Bora - and absolutely not the same Jon Favreau writing Obama's speeches.
Well - damn - I think everyone in America that wants to have a better year, should evidently change their name to Jon Favreau - cuz the geek Jon, knocked IRON MAN out of the park, just got his deal for IRON MAN 2 and is Executive Producing THE AVENGERS. And the Obama Jon - well, he's been speechifying real damn good at a word processor.
ANYWAY - here's the latest news from MARVEL. My opinion on the Cheadle/Howard switch? Well - I love both actors, but I wish continuity would have solidified. Don will be fantastic, as he always is, I just wish the switch wasn't an apparent necessity.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. AND JON FAVREAU SUIT UP FOR MARVEL STUDIOS' THE AVENGERS AND IRON MAN 2
As part of his four picture deal with Marvel Studios, Robert Downey Jr. is appearing as Tony Stark in THE AVENGERS motion picture, as well as reprising his starring role as the larger-than-life leading character in IRON MAN 2. Jon Favreau will return to direct the sequel to the blockbuster IRON MAN, which to date has grossed over $578 million worldwide, as well as executive produce THE AVENGERS.
Academy Award® nominee Downey was most recently seen in the summer comedy blockbuster TROPIC THUNDER starring opposite Ben Stiller and Jack Black. Before Iron Man, he was best known for his film roles in KISS KISS BANG BANG, WONDER BOYS and CHAPLIN, the film for which he was nominated for an Oscar®.
In addition to directing the first IRON MAN, Favreau has previously directed ELF, ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE and MADE. He is also well known for writing and starring in SWINGERS. He will next be seen acting in FOUR CHRISTMASES, I LOVE YOU MAN and COUPLES RETREAT.
DON CHEADLE WILL STAR AS RHODEY IN IRON MAN 2
Marvel Studios is pleased today to confirm that an agreement has been finalized with award-winning actor Don Cheadle to take on the role of Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in Marvel's IRON MAN 2 due in theaters on May 7, 2010. In casting Cheadle, Marvel replaces Terrence Howard who appeared in the role of Rhodey in IRON MAN.
Cheadle is also signed on to perform the same role in THE AVENGERS and subsequent installments of the IRON MAN franchise.
"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to new heights," said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.
Cheadle is best known for his Oscar® nominated lead performance in HOTEL RWANDA as well as his role as Basher Tarr in the OCEAN'S franchise, CRASH and SWORDFISH.
Based on Marvel's iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN 2 continues the story of this summer's box office blockbuster IRON MAN, the first feature film produced independently by Marvel Studios. IRON MAN 2 will be produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D'Esposito, Jon Favreau, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Denis Stewart.
In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.
The highly anticipated sequel to IRON MAN will be released in theatres on May 7, 2010 and THE AVENGERS will be released July 15, 2011. Both films will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Favreau is just getting that honorary title on Avengers but he probably won't have much to do with it. I hope Edward Norton returns for Avengers, but it's doubtful.

Don and Robert are both short, unattractive, occasionally annoying but highly gifted and witty actors. Seems like a no brainer.

I'm kind of dissapointed that cheadle wasn't in the 1st iron man as i believe lack of continuity ruins a lot of films(altho i have nothing against howard). however im a big fan of cheadle especially in hotel rhoanda, and the confirmation that a avengers movie will be made excites me alot. for me this is bigger news than this talkback suggests.

As much as I'm already enjoying the initial films, the true excitement in the fan community is that this is all leading to "The Avengers." We've already replaced the original Jim Rhodes just one movie in. How long will it be before Edward Norton is replaced (or drops out) as Bruce Banner? Each of the major stars cast in each film is going to ask for a ridiculous amount of money when it comes time to make "The Avengers," which will have to be an ensemble piece. They won't be top dog. Imagine that set, with all those egos together in one place making demands. We'll be lucky if any of the orignial actors appear in that film.

Audiences are surprisingly forgiving about changes in casting. We bitch and moan, but almost always turn a blind eye to some degree or another.
In the X-Men films, Ellen Page was the 3rd Kitty Pryde. Ed Norton Replaced Eric Bana as the Hulk. Various actors have donned the cowl & capes of Batman and Superman.
This is just business. Audiences mostly turn their brains off and go with the flow. Unless, of course, they're the whiny bitch types who have to pick every nit regarding "Mannequin" Skywalker or Greedo.
It's a shame that Howard won't be in Iron Man 2. I've really dug every performance of his since his role as Spaceman in "Sunset Park." He's a versatile actor to be sure. Then again, so is Cheadle, who has not nearly received as much critical acclaim as he deserves.
Regardless, it is what it is. I'm just glad to see that Marvel is willing do some of the more ambitious films like Avengers. Long overdue. -
I'd say the deal is for an Iron Man trilogy and an Avengers movie. No way a 20 second cameo would be seen as a movie. Also, hope to hell Favreau's got that Justin Theroux hauling ass on the script cause it's less than two years away. Seems to me like they're rushing it.

It has not been finalized. As is typical of films these days, Norton is still under contract for any potential sequels and such. It's not totally impossible. It's up to the suits.

Glad to see Favreau doing his thing. Cheadle will do a great job as Rhodey, I'm sure, though I would've preferred character continuity.

Iron Man broke the Richard Donner Superman template that the Spider-films followed, and I'm very amped about Avengers. I still say they need to go LotR on this: Get a director who's really into the project, and a cast that can actually work together.

I feel Howard was too much of a leading man-type. Had they made his James Rhodes character that much stronger and interesting, he might have taken the spotlight from RDJ's Stark. Cheadle seems to be more of a supporting actor type, and thus may fit that supporting role better while allowing his character to grow and not upend the focus on Tony Stark.

Keeping Favs in the loop helps the large-scale continuity. I read Terence Howard wanted more $$, but getting Cheadle for the roll was a masterstroke.

Howard's a great actor but his character in Iron Man? A little flat, to be honest.
Cheadle, on the other hand, has never anything less than great in everything i've seen him in. the way i sees it, Iron Man was a great first flick but if they'd had Cheadle in the role the first time, it would have been even stronger... -

...than continuity. It can be slightly jarring to not have the same actor in a sequel (see Maggie G in Dark Knight who didn't connect with the broader arc, much as she is 10 times the actress Katie Holmes is), but Cheadle will be better. Howard was just too damn fey and effeminate; I'm no gay-basher but it didn't go with the character.
However, the serious problem with IM2 is that it's being rushed. They're not taking the time to develop it, write it, re-write it, and plan it out to perfection. It's all about product now, having a product ASAP to cash in on previous success. In their extremely tight schedule, they're going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, just as with X3 and those awful Batman sequels.
You don't want a huge cast in an Iron Man movie - the inclusion of War Machine is fine, but you don't want an expanded role for Sam Jackson's Nick Fury or any of the SHIELD/Avengers fluff. Keep the focus on Tony Stark, on who he is and what he wants, as opposed to teaming him up with a crapload of other people and diluting the formula in a lame JLA-type feature. -
They have to establish Thor and Captain America before The Avengers comes out!

And it's a damn Shame that the Director. Who presents himself as a person who befriends others like a brother, can't stand up and fight for Terence to see him reprise his role. I love Don as an actor too, but I'm not cool with this. Not one bit! I think about all those Dinner for 5 episodes with Fav's and how he seemed around the other guest at the table. Why isn't there a video of him saying something about this or better yet a video with him and Terence in the same room talking about it. After Jon made Iron Man he came out and he thanked the fans for the support, he showed up at random showings with Robert Downey Jr. to shake peoples hands and ask them what they thought of the film. That is the Jon I'm hoping is real. That Jon should be awful upset about this choice and he should be doing everything he can to see Terence return. Again I like Don, but this reaks man. It really does. Jon we remember when you were overweight in Rudy, and a bit player before everything was "So Money"
You've come into you own and it's a Thrill for us as well to see you finally Doing it. You seem to be one of us "A True Geek". Marvel would be foolish to cut you out. Use some of that power and the Fan's wishes to keep the players in game. Maybe Don can come in as another character, but Howard he is Rhodey. Take it back, Marvel/Fav. Take back what you said about Howard... -
As much as I love the cameos and such, the story needs to focus on Stark. And rushed productions rarely turns out well.
The best they can hope for is mediocrity that's supported by great acting. -

and Cheadle could care less. He's gonna get paid to play a part that he's not perfect for at all, no matter his acting pedigree. Howard fit the physical profile of Rhodey perfectly, no matter if some of his scenes were trimmed or deemed unecessary for the first film. This is Favreau's mess. He should give Howard a back-end deal with less pay and abort Cheadle ASAP to save this 'now fucked' film sequel.

I liked Howard as Rhodey. Cheadle is a solid performer, hopefully he'll handle this well. It is too early to tell what they're going to do with these properties. One has cause to be hopeful, but these things have a way of going through a difficult process. I try to prepare myself for alarming reports in the future.

He's playing ball. He was obviously told that Iron Man 2 is coming out May, 2010 and he can either film it or fuck off. From what i've read, he wanted to delay it a year to work on the script. But he didn't want to lose the gig. So, hopefully he can get it together and do justice to the first one. And who the fuck knows why Howards been replaced? Maybe he walked? Maybe he's an asshole that no one wanted to work with again? Yes, it's a shame, but he didn't impress me in the first one. Cheadle will be fine. Anyway, it's called Ironman, not Jim Rhodes. If Downey was getting replaced then it'd be a different story.

He understands how to adapt a comic book for screen because he proved it with the first one. I just hope that they (Marvel) allow him to do it his way. I'm a little disappointed by this. I'm sure Cheadle will do fine because he's a gifted actor, but Howard just fits the role so much better.
Chiwetel Ejiofor would have been a much better choice, but probably isn't "high profile" enough for the suits to have even considered him. -
has changed an actor. Even though I have nothing against Maggie in TDK, I was used to Katie for the role. I think it was a cruise thing why she didn't return. Not because she was busy doing some stupid money flic or her kid.
I think Tom read the script and didn't like a few things. 1. This would probably be bigger then any movie Cruise has done, 2. Christian Bale/kissing plus Heath Ledger, and Aaron Echart, all dudes that would like to rub on her box, 3. She dies in the film. Fucked in the head Cruise/Scientology BS of taking shit to seriously.
Don Cheadle is great and will do fine but Howard was perfect and again the one I got used to.

And they didn't even bother to tell him when his option wasn't picked up for the second Hulk film, he had to read about the "franchise reboot" and the recasting at the same time as everyone else. He also said that while he wasn't so worried about it himself, he felt kinda bad for his co-stars Sam Elliot and Jennifer Connolly, with them being dumped the same way.

I'm too lazy to pull up a pic of teh Avengers #1, but of course Cap, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk are the big four. We haven't seen Captain America yet onscreen and I don't know how he won't be goofy...Thor may even be harder to pull off. A guy in cool armor and a big green guy were actually the easiest.

Is what it's all about. You can have The Avengers movie work as long as the people making it know how to portray the story as a movie. It's the difference between Spider-Man (a comic book adaptation) and Spider-Man 2 (a movie). I'm not the only one who preferred the latter.

I really knew nothing about Iron Man prior to the movie. I knew he was a rich dude in the suit with no super powers. I did not know of the Avengers. I am not a comic book guy but love the movies. Who do the Avengers fight in comic books?

As for The Matrix I mean it's difficult to accept someone else when you become used to them, regardless of why there was a change. I wasn't ragging on the studio for the actor change. They had no choice and they did handle it fine. But it sucks when there is a change, most of the time.

Every time a topic like this comes up, certain kinds of talkbackers surface to naysay, deliberately ignorant of the fact that some of the best movies ever made had casts in strange clothing. I dunno. I agree RDJ and Jon could and should've demanded Terrence be given his role back for Iron Man 2 and 3 before they signed on, but he has spoken about it and said he's personally offended. He said he did sign a contract with Marvel for a sequel, that they don't seem to want to honor and didn't make any outrageous salary demands. Sure they'd have to pay him a higher salary, but in light of how much Irom Man 1 has made, Marvel can afford it.

who though that Terrence Howard didn't do great in Iron Man? I thought his smoothness was too easily mistaken for indifference. Cheadle can walk that line much more delicately based on his past work. Either way, let's all just wait and see. I'm betting it'll turn out great.
And enough about Jon Favreau becoming a Hollywood Asshole. Recasting a character doesn't mean he's an asshole. Either he had budget constraints that required going to a lower profile actor, or the studio demanded he go with someone else for one reason or another, or he wasn't in love with Howard's performance. I'm betting the latter; I could be wrong, but even if I am, it doesn't change the fact that Howard is out and Cheadle is in. So get over it. You know you're going to go see Iron Man 2 anyways. -

With all apologies to DGDB, Terrence Howard was NOT a great Rhody...he was decent but not amazing (the only people who would call him great in Iron Man are just inherent fans that probably loved him in 'The Brave One' too). The script simply didn't give him much to work with - and unfortunately, Terrence is rather famously difficult on set which led to his being excused from future Favreau projects. Don Cheadle is a good choice and will do well...he may even be better because of his raw energy and enthusiasm.

Go back through all those IM TBs from when it came out when everybody (besides the cooler-than-thou-everything-is-shit types) said the film was the best thing ever. Try to find anybody saying Howard was so lousy or even "just decent"/serviceable/whatever... Nope! But someone mentions an alternative that didn't occur to ANY of you and you're all over it. Not to mention the part couldn't and SHOULDN'T have been played bigger/better - a good actor knows that when they're playing a supporting part even in a single scene they don't chew the stuff themselves. Jesus you guys. Not only are you sucking Cheadle's dick (yeah sure he's great, that's not the point), but you can't do it without shitting on Howard (who's ALSO great)! Can't you hold the concept in your heads that one thing can be good WITHOUT the other thing being crap? I guess not, judging by the Iron Man vs DK simpleton wars. Most of you don't even get that it's two different takes on the same bloody character.
Yet when it DOES come to fanboy casting you can't think your way past "looks like = IS". Too funny that now you're all casting dispersions, and also ready to shit on Favreau so quickly "just in case" after venerating the guy a few weeks or months before. I'm already preparing for the self-protecting Nolan shitstorm, WHATEVER he decides to do with the third Bats film...
And to those who said Chiwetel Ejiofor after seeing Redbelt five minutes ago (not you Bloo) for the role, you fickle types would've said that was the worst thing ever if the last thing you'd seen him in was Kinky Boots. You'd all be wetting your fucking panties! -
(--Partly because of the truth that's in it.) For the record, I loved both "THE DARK KNIGHT" and "IRON MAN" ...as both are excellent. And I, personally, will miss the continuity of Howard in IRON-MAN 2. (Both Howard and Cheadle are talented actors.) --And with THE DARK KNIGHT (as others have said), the recasting of a certain...key role...was a smart move (though an unfortunate evil, at the sacrifice of continuity).

Im officially the last geek alive to see it - it finally showed up in that dvd vending machine outside McDonalds.
Movie was fantastic, but started coasting on neutral after Stark escaped from captivity. The opening 'here's who this guy is for all you people who never read a comic book' montage was just brilliantly written.
Terrence Howard is HORRIBLE in this movie. He is the ugliest black woman in Hollywood, and has the voice of a mermaid extra from a Barbie: Mariposa dvd. That character should have been lean, mean and full of piss and vinegar - Jesse Ventura in his prime in blackface would have been a better casting choice, straw hat and ballads about his mammy included. Don Cheadle isn't much of an improvement, but you could cast a feral tomcat in the role and still take par for the hole.
One of my favorite DVD features are the deleted scenes. Its a window into the editing process. Generally, these scenes will ADD to the movie you just watched, but in Iron Man, every single deleted scene I watched, I said to my wife, "yeah I totally see why that was cut." which says something about Favereaughxlxss's skills in the editing room. He finds the fat, and trims it perfectly - and presents you with a fine, lean cutlet of a movie.
But in Iron Man 2,can we just have him built 1 suit and use it? He spent 89% of this movie building flying combat armor with a soldering iron, with little to no explanation why he needed a new design. And if his bat-computer can actually automate the manufacturing process, how about a scene in his warehouse full of ready-to-go iron suits? I always assumed Tony Stark had, at any moment, over 100 suits ready for use. -
I'm RDJr's doppleganger. Look just like him, and since high school (over 25 years ago) I've had to put up with people telling me "Hey, you look like..." So if you need a stand in or stunt double, I'm your guy. You can whip me, beat me, punch me, whatever, because I respect RDJr and enjoyed the first Iron Man. Call me. Ask harry for my email. Don't settle for just a regular old half-good stand in.

Allow me to start where I was so obviously wrong. As laughable as it is now, I was against the casting of Ledger as the Joker and RDJ as Tony Stark. At the time, I just didn't see THE FULL TALENT RANGE of Ledger. And as for RDJ, I felt it was more of a physical presence kind-of-thing, in that the role of Tony Stark requires leadership qualities. But RDJ's performance was amazing...and the IRON MAN suit did the rest. (It was a subtle touch...but it was great that the IRON-suit added a bit more height. So, more kudos to all involved in that process.) --Gripes that I've had with Nolan's vision for Batman are few...but the Bat-suit design continues to be my #1 nit-pick. (Computer touch-up or otherwise, thank god they got rid of the "bra" look the costume once had.) The Bat-suit/costume isn't bad. But I argue, however, that it should be freakin' cool (while maintaining Nolan's functional approach). (This would be so EASY to illustrate...and if I was more computer savy and had the ability to up-load an image, I would do that.) And I realize that if Nolan exaggerates the cape too much,...if Nolan attempts a more visual, artistically-staged approach, we then LOSE the more plausible, life-like interpretation (that Nolan has found success with). And this same rule goes along with choreography, as well. --So, at this point, all I ask of Nolan...is that the Bat-suit gets the attention it deserves. And just maybe...it wouldn't hurt to look at a movie like David Fincher's "SE7EN" ...and consider uses for Batman's awesome silhouette(s) and shadow(s).

Seriously though, Terrence Howard was good, but a bit too light in the loafers to be War Machine. He was too much like Cuba Gooding, Jr. In other words, a pussy! I kept expecting him to yell SHOW ME THE MONEY, TONY! And then rifle through his underwear drawer to see if he wears Hanes. But here's your answer: Replace RDJ with Tom Cruise and Terrence Howard with Cuba Gooding, Jr. And Pepper Potts can be played by Renee Zellwegger. It'll be a Jerry McGuire sequel and an Iron Man sequel all rolled into one! Can you imagine the box office on that? Then all you need to do is replace Sam Jackson with Kurt Russell as Nick Fury... Hell, yes! Nick Fury with a mullet!

C'mon dudes and dudettes....I don't know about all of you comic geeks out there on the internets but....I've been collecting comics for 26 YEARS and have roughly 6,500(a WHOLE basement full)...I'm 31, married with 2 children...my "hobby" has taken a backseat in recent years in lieu of bills and food and housing...BUT I remember a time in the long long ago (the 80's) when I literally DREAMED of the day I could go to my local cinema and purchase a ticket for a Spider-Man movie (I have EVERY issue from '86-'97) or see a matinee of X-Men. Shit, I remember back in '95 or so, when HARRY had a column in the back of a magazine talkin' about Jim Cameron's Spider-Man that was coming out in the summer of '98!!! Yeah there were some duds (even tho I don't think spidey 3 was AS bad as some ppl think. But yeah, Daredevil was a steaming pile of Bantha shit!) But just being able to know that in the next 3-4 years I'll be able to take my children to see Iron Man 2, Captain America, Spidey 4 AND 5, Thor, Ant Man (still excited bout this one!) and the FREAKING AVENGERS!!!!??? Makes me just full of ...hrm?...what's the word? Oh, HAPPINESS! I really, really love comics. I've been blessed by Jebus to be able to WRITE them for a LIVING (meager as it may be) but to be able to see the joy a person gets from seeing one of these films, a person who may have never picked up a comic EVER, justifies my passion for comics and film. Thanks a lot Harry!!

Oh, no doubt people will see the movie and it will do well. But that's only part of the money they make. They make a lot off of licensing of geek paraphernalia — and if the movie sucks, people are less inclined to buy any. Just ask George Lucas and all the Jar Jar Binks beach towels he got stuck with.

Hey, a member of the brethren! The masses will one day lay aside their mockery when they realize we're not all stereotypical nebs. I collected for a llloooonng time: Conan the Barbarian, The Avengers, Tomb of Dracula, Batman, Howard the Duck, Uncanny X-Men, New Teen Titans... Shame I still don't have that stuff, I coulda funded my way through college. I'm now a thirtysomething, I have my She-Devil and two beautiful hellspawn, and my former obsession has fallen to the wayside these past several years due to other priorities. This hobby has gotten damned expensive. I still try to keep up with the latest happenings in the field. Comics fandom is like the Mafia or the CIA- no one really leaves forever. Like you, I remember the bygone days when the concept of a superhero movie was only in my most fevered imaginings. I recollect the 90s was the time when the movie industry took notice of the Batman franchise and there was a push to make comic-themed movies. Oh, and how the fan publications speculated on which actors should be cast as our favorite comic book characters! But the problem was most of the actual films produced were made by untried talent and failed or succeeded on how well they translated on the screen. Some, like The Crow and The Mask, were modest successes. Others, like Judge Dredd and Tank Girl... well, the world just wasn't ready for them. The 2000s has seen the mainstream embrace geek culture, for better and worse. The iconic figures of our youth, Spider-Man, the X-Men, etc., have captured the attention of the world at large. Yeah, some of these adaptations have been less effective than others, but at least now I no longer joke about how I'll be a doddering grandparent by the time they make an Avengers movie. It's a very cool time indeed.
