I'll be getting I, Madman and not just to see Jenny Wright half neked either, it sounds pretty goddamn awesome. As for In The Mouth Of Madness, I adore that goddamn flick, I loved it the first time I watched it. It's got a fantastic Lovecraft vibe to it, Sam Neil is THE MAN in it and it's downright SMART. It's got so much creepy shit going on in it. It's one of Carpenters best so far as I'm concerned.

seeing this when I was about 10 years old, it didn't make a lot of sense to me back then but I remember the evil doctor and his fucked up face.
Nice to see some love for ITMOM and POD, you hit the nail on the head when describing how they are his scariest work yet not his greatest.

And has been since it was released.

Carpenter's last great film. I can't understand why people hated on it, its creepy, imaginative and has one of the greatest film endings going. Its even got Hayden Christensen on a bike!

Whatever happened to that movie? I thought Robert Rodriguez was doing it, years ago. Post Sin City, i'd be very excited to see that get maid! In the Mouth of Madness, along with Prince of Darkness, is prob the last time Carpenter made a decent film.

Even though I don't remember much of it, I remember it being a solidly entertaining horror flick.

And speaking of The Gate, Stephen Dorff had a GIANT head when he was a kid. It's like he grew into it. He got older and taller, but his head stayed the same size.

Do you know these movies that you see standing in your local video rental as a kid and you are fascinated by the cover and every few years you read the title of it or see the trailer or something, but never got around to watch it?
Fun Fact: "Die Mächte des Wahnsinns" means "The forces of madness".
Oct. 28, 2008, 7:46 a.m. CST
I'll admit to not liking it when it first came out. I hadn't read much (if any) Lovecraft at the time and so I couldn't really appreciate what Carpenter was trying to do.

. . . I saw it in the theater on too much weed. Saw it when released on VHS on too much acid. I've been creeped out at the thought of revisiting it. It's about that time . . .

In the Mouth of Madness is one of my favorite horror movies. Fantastic work, and probably the swansong of Carpenter's good work.
Oct. 28, 2008, 8:38 a.m. CST
First you mention the Gate, which is one of the few horror movies I watched as a young'in, so we're off to a great start! Then I Madman sounds great, I love shifting reality stories, and will definitely be seeking this one out. And then you throw down with one of my favorite horror flicks ITMOM, which got so much right I don't understand how it was ever hated on.

I think this is a sign it'll be a good day :)

That movie was brilliant and I doubt whatever lightning they bottled at the time can be caught again. In fact, I'd rather watch ITMOM than Halloween any time.

Theme goes. Horror High Good, Return bad.... Full Moon High= Utterly Fucking Awesome. I miss Just the Ten Of Us Bill Kirchenbauer. I know he's still alive, but he aint what he was in the 80's... That reminds me I need to go see Night Patrol.
I hope Talking through a rubber chicken wearing golloshes Student Bodies makes the HMAD Cut. The Breather predates Scary Movie, and the Jamie Lee Curtis Joke was ahead of it's time. I think it was the first satire slasher flick. The Airplane of Slasher flicks... Fucking movie is overlooked, and where in the hell is The Stick??? That dude was a fucking riot. No one know's where he is. I think he had marfan syndrom and is dead. Had to be something like that.. That guy was huge and lanky!

I saw it a long time ago on Skinemax, I remember it not being scary at all, but Marsha Brady was still hot. Didn't realize Clooney was in it, I wonder if this came out before Return of the Killer Tomatoes...

I was thinking ITMOM reading this article and BAM, great to see some love for it. I remember back in the day I saw ITMOM on the theater the same day I saw THE HUDSUCKER PROXY. Never have had such an amazing double feature since that day. I remember going into the theater for ITMOM and two old ladies are walking out from the previous show. One of them turns to the other and says "This is the last time I watch a mistery movie!!" I don't know why that seems so funny to me, but it does. Awesome movie.

Great story, really well shot (the location scouts almost did the best work in the entire film), great actors. Apart from one or two ropey looking monsters, it's borderline perfect. And to think that it's the same director who in recent years has given us Ghosts of Mars, and those risible Masters of Horror things.
Oct. 28, 2008, 1:36 p.m. CST
Watching flicks like that and some others, you realize just what a HACK Kevin Williamson is... Or WAS, since we haven't heard from him in ages. Guess he stole all that he was capable of...
Oct. 28, 2008, 2:41 p.m. CST
In fact I'd go so far to say that In The Mouth of Madness was Carpenter's last truly great film. I mean I had cheesy fun with Vampires, Escape from L.A., and even Ghosts of Mars to a certain extent, but none are a patch on the work that had come before, and don't even get me started on those truly awful Masters of Horror episodes that he did. Come back John Carpenter, we miss you...
As far as horror recommendations go, Near Dark better be on that list, or I'm going to rabbit punch you mister Quint...
