@ Hot on the heels of their announcement of January’s release of FEMALE FORCE: HILLARY CLINTON, Bluewater Comics announced this week that they will be publishing FEMALE FORCE: SARAH PALIN, following her attempt to become the first female Vice President. The comic will hit the racks in February and will be produced with two outcomes; one depicting a White House victory, the other a loss depending on the results of the election.

@ Garth Ennis and Carlos Ezquerra’s JUST A PILGRIM miniseries gets collected in hardcover by Dynamite in December…

@ Joe Kubert’s done a cover for #1 of writer Arvid Nelson’s CONAN spin-off miniseries KULL, due from Dark Horse in November…

@ Early DAREDEVIL artist John Romita Sr. has drawn a cover for #1 of Alex Ross’s DEATH-DEFYING DEVIL revamp, which’ll be written by Joe Casey and drawn by Edgar Salazar…

    by steve rogers

DC is pathologically incapable of hiring an artist to pencil their mega-events who will be able to keep to the schedule... and the schedule waits for no man! (unlike, say, Civil War. Lateness was a bitch but the story still has cohesion when you read it back now).
Dan Didio should take the blame for this.

    by psynapse

A fucking YEAR headstart? He shouldn't have accepted the gig in the first place.

    Reply to Talkback

  • And it's not like Jones was turning in his best work in years for FINAL CRISIS either. It was mediocre Jones' stuff at best. I actually applaud Didio for having the balls to say "If you can't finish it, we'll get someone else who will." I like Mahnke, so I'm ok with the relacement. Maybe this huge cut in pay for Jones will wake him up and get him to set down the X-Box long enough to finish a book he had a year to complete. Sure, maybe he had some kind of personal problems. And if that's the case, then we all missed out. But if he wants to make the professional money, he should show up and do the work. I've talked to quite a few writers who, off the record, complain about the extended wait for the colorist or the inker or the penciler while their finished written work is just gathering dust and being forgotten on the shelves. There are plenty of professional artists out there. Good for Didio for nabbing one of them to take over for Miss Priss.

Fuck Jones, but still... Doug Mahnke?

    by laserhead

Nothing against Mahnke, but he's not exactly an event artist. I keep wishing JH Williams III had gotten the gig, but maybe we'd have the same problem. I don't think Doug Mahnke's art syncs up very well with the other artists on board, though. The odd thing is that there's an artist whose style is very similar to Jones's and who seems to keep his deadlines: Chris Weston. He could have done this.Anyway, it could have been something special, and now it's an epic movie with three different cinematographers and three sets of actors playing all the roles. This is why Marvel laughs at DC, and I'm waiting on the tpb.

I have purchased all of the final crisis issues, and I have no idea what is going on. Marvel's "Secret War" is much better at telling a cohesive story. I know what is going on when I read it; I have no clue with Final Crisis. This time, Marvel defeats D.C.

Linguistics has shown that language mutates constantly and fastest in urbanized environments. Therefore the insertion of "Should of" in place of "Should've" is actually an expectable phenomenon regardless of grammatical rules. (But grammar nerds like MisterE and myself might call you out on it nonetheless) (*_^)

These days is for these so called big artists to basically do an issue when ever they feel like it. Bad enough that most of these events are ill conceived bags of half assed suck, but having to wait 3 to 6 moths for the next issue is just inexcusable. Thank god for torrents. I just ignore the Major event til it's over, download it and get the disappointment out of the way in one shot. Honestly, name he last GOOD Big Event in either universe.

Definitely agree with Laserhead. J.H. Williams has incredible, if not the best, page layouts, in addition to being well-suited for creepy-weird Morrison stories. Just check out the art on his League of Batmen story with Morrison recently. It takes the story to another level entirely.

Though the question as to whether or not Williams could have managed this schedule any better than Jones is there still.

    by matthew martinez

I'm kind of bummed to hear about the cancellation of Spider-Girl, even though I don't read it anymore. I was a faithful reader for a few years, but it really went downhill when Pat Oliffe left. If he'd been replaced by someone I like, I might still be collecting it monthly. Instead, they got Ron Frenz. I never liked Frenz's art very much, but I must admit that his '80s/'90s output wasn't terrible. As of now, it's pretty god-awful. (Why couldn't Marvel have picked an older and underused artist whose stuff is still good? Someone like Norm Breyfogle or... I'm drawing a blank.)

    2. to look for with reason or justification: We expect obedience.
    3. Informal. to suppose or surmise; guess: I expect that you are tired from the trip.
    4. to anticipate the birth of (one's child): Paul and Sylvia expect their second very soon.
—Idiom5. be expecting, to be pregnant: The cat is expecting again. It's not wise to attempt to school me in regards to language, because like the Nazis, you'll lose. (*_^)

A What If...? tale spun off into a series that lasted 130 issues, and gave way to the short-lived 'MC2'line of comics... nothing to be too bummed about. It's remarkable it lasted even that long. You can bet Marvel will still publish Mayday stories every now and then after this title comes to a halt.

Since Jones accepted a contracted assignment to produce the art for "Final Crisis" and he was unable to produce the art within the contracted time frame, I would say that his is the greatest failure in regards to the topic of discussion. DC would not have removed Jones from the book if factors unrelated to his contribution to the project were responsible for the failure. DC's ultimate responsibility is to produce a product by a scheduled date, and they are unable to produce said product if its components have not been delivered by those contracted to deliver the components.

I do like DC, its just they don't generally tell stories that interest me. Its like how I bitch about the Avengers having BBQs in full costume, well, to me, DC is ALWAYS like that. DC heroes just don't seem to have "real" civilian secret identities, let alone Civilian clothes, there's Green Arrow, just walking down the street, dressed like a Broadway Robin Hood. DC secret identities always seem more like place holders, more like the hero is hiding behind their civilian ID, rather than having the civilian ID be the driving force of the story. Is Batman the mask or is Bruce Wayne? Does Clark Kent really exist or is he just Superman in glasses? Peter Parker is a real person. Luke Cage is a real person. Wally West is just who the Flash is on wash day.

    by oisin5199

You know how to revamp Black Panther? Change his gender? Well, sure. Or you could get a much better writer. I love how in the article, Hudlin says his run has been 'controversial' - which is code for, 'most people thought I sucked.' The revamp started out really well, but as soon as BP married Storm, it was all downhill. Not that the marriage itself was a bad idea. But that whole 'mystical frogs' storyline with the FF was some of the worst crap I've ever read in a Marvel comic. And that's saying a lot. The Killraven stuff was a bit better, but really BP is running on fumes. This whole gender switch is a desperate ploy.

  • The only possible way Sarah Palin has any relevance when that hits is if McCain actually pulls this out and then dies before February. Otherwise, at best she's Vice President, and nobody cares about her because there's no way McCain keeps her as close as Bush keeps Chaney. Or they lose, and she's back in Alaska where nobody gives a damn what she says or spends on clothes, and *maybe* the Republicans dig her up in 4 years. If that comic isn't coming out next week, there's zero point to it coming out at all.

    best recent comics event?

    by ian216a

As already stated - Sinistro Corps War for sure. Probably the best comic crossever ever to be honest. The first and last issues were the most jaw-dropping books I've read for years. That last double page spread in the first issue that revealed Superboy-prime, Hank Henshaw and THE FUCKING ANTI-MONITER!!! was just amazing, only beaten in recent memory by the giant bullet phasing through New York in Astonishing X-men. And Ambush Bug - right there with you, there should have been a more Kirbyesque look to the art in Final Crisis. My vote would have gone to Scott Kolins repeating the style he used for the Darkseid/Orion fight in Countdown. Best thing in that series by far.

    Regarding the Black Panth-ress

    by thrillho77

Marvel AND DC need to quit making so many of these shitty little series for these individual characters that nobody buys. When they do that, they spread their talent and quality QUITE thin.

That said, I realize that a lot of people are fans of these minor characters. I, myself, am a big Moon Knight fan. And for the longest time he didn't have a series (and I'm worried his current one will be canceled) - they simply aren't often viable.

Instead, they need to make up new team books, so they can satisfy many fan-wanted characters at one time. Maybe that's not the right idea either, but it's not working the way it is now. These individual series just keep getting hopes up and crushing them when they're canceled.

    by thrillho77

And if the Black Panther wasn't viable enough, do they really think making it a WOMAN will do them MORE business?!?! Really?

Female counter-part comics almost always fail.

    Just to be contrary

    by toshiro-solo

I would actually prefer that the original artist stay on a book like Final Crisis. Yeah, the delays are kind of annoying, and delays like this should cost Jones work in the future, but I'd rather be able to go back and read all 7 issues once they're done and see the cohesion that can only come from having the same writer and artist(s) on all 7 issues. To me, I have plenty of comics (some good, some bad) to read on a weekly basis. I'm not terminally ill (that I know of), so - if it takes an extra 3 or 4 or 6 months to get to the end, then so be it. I'll read other stuff in the meantime. I have a hard time with the idea that people are JUST SO DYING to see what happens next that a delay like this is the end of the world. Annoying? Yup. Definitely. Annoying enough to mar the eventual finished product? Not for me.

I'd totally wait for Jones, I hate multiple artists

    by tallboy66

I like a cohesive whole, and Jones art has been gangbusters - check out that final page of issue #4 of Nu-Darkside giving his thumbs down - fantastic composition and dramatic and dark. I don't see how a delay is a bad thing - you save money, and there are other comics to read. Stop bitching.

Leafar the Lost - Marvel always wins

    by most excellent ninja

when has DC won? back in the Watchmen days? Maybe Sinestro Corps War but at the end of the day Marvel is taking 50% share of the market and delivering acclaimed comics and even their other comics look amazing, professional yet DC's most important event since the first Crisis has art not worthy of a c grade Marvel hero.

    by most excellent ninja

crossover, superhero story. Whatever. Watchmen is the king of comics but Sinestro Corps War is the most entertaining ultimate story ever produced in comics. Fact. The best Star Wars story since Empire.

    by chewbaccacabra

May not be all his fault. There were a few blog posts that were pulled because they were potentially libelous. Here's a link to what some have pieced together. Who knows if any of it's true. At any rate DC is huge mess. WB needs to really clean house over there.

    Watchmen is WAY over-rated...

    by psynapse

It was originally Moore's deconstructionist take on the Charlton stable of characters and nothing more. It was a decent story but nowhere near the Holy Grail of superhero stories that so many make it out to be.Aand the Movie? Oooh it's R-rated superheroes! Big whoop, been there done that.

    by joenathan

The true legacy of Watchman isn't SOLELY based on its very well done story, but its lasting impact on the comic book medium itself. THAT is the main reason Watchman is, and always will be, remembered. It and Dark Knight completely revolutionized the industry. That book opened whole new worlds up. Comics wouldn't be what they are now, if not for that book. Do you REALLY not know that? Or are you just be contrary merely for the sake of some really strange, nerdy scenester perception that taking this stance would earn you some kind of comic "indie" cred? Oooooh, the comic book "cool" kid... Big whoop, been there, done that.

    Watchmen

    by steverodgers

As much as i want to be annoyed at all the regular folks i see toting around the watchmen graphic novel these days i can't - i hope its a gateway drug for all those folks. This summer i saw multiple people reading it on the subway and i have to say it made me wicked happy. I think the praise of that comic cannot be overstated - it's timeless.

    The Rumor is this:

    by psynapse

***DISCLAIMER: This is an unsubstantiated rumor that was posted by someone known as "DCInsider". The original post at blogspot has been deleted likely to legal threatening as it IS potentially libelous.AGAIN, this is a RUMOR and neither myself nor anyone associated with AICN accept ANY responsibility or credit for it's contents.**
Supposedly the reason that JG Jones has gotten so much DC work over the last few years is because Dan Didio is sleeping with his wife, Jann Jones. From Rich Johnston's LITG column dated 10/20/2008: "Which executive gave an artist a phenomenal amount of work over the last two years so that the executive may woo a colleague and partner of the artist, in a manner rather reminiscent of the biblical tale of David and Uriah?"

It's not the 'fanboy community', it's the 'creator community'. By all means, correspond with Coleen Doran, Valerie D'orazio, Diana Schutz, Gail Simone and any other women that have worked at DC and get them to tell you what kind of bullshit goes on at DC (and Marvel for that matter). BTW, Rich Johnston IS the LITG guy (or is that just a typo?)

What is it with you prickly fucks? Every time someone disagrees with what you perceive as unquestionable truth, you get to be a douchebag about it--anonymously, of course. I mean, read the last line of your post to synapse to see what a prissy, imperious little ass you are: assuming characteristics about someone you don't know, and then mocking them for it. Hey, I think Watchmen is overrated too, regardless of its historical importance. Must make me a moron. However, I am in total agreement with you on slow artists. This seems to be a mystery that will never be explained.
