Coolest Thing That Happened Yesterday! World Record Shattering THRILLER Sync Dancing in Austin: 881!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... All geeks, everywhere love THRILLER - I remember the Making of THRILLER that appeared on MTV back in the day - and when Vincent Price did that THRILLER rap at the end... brilliance. John Landis, Rick Baker and Michael Jackson were all in their finest form. It was simply a great time. Now there's this THRILL THE WORLD movement - to establish worldwide synchronized THRILLER dance offs. Here in Austin, it caught hold a bit deeper and wider than anywhere else. You see, the slogan for Austin is KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD - and folks like the Alamo Drafthouse, our mayor Will Wynn and well... our citizenry - tries their best to keep it going. We shattered the previous World Record of 140 Synchronized THRILLER dancers - by having 881 Synchronized THRILLER dancers going at it. Don't believe me... watch the videos below - Ain't It Cool?

The fact that a community can get together and agree to do something that zany en mass just goes to show how tight the community really is. I don't think you would see anything like that anywhere in America outside of maybe NYC. Bravo.
-
The Thriller video scared the shit out of me as kid. Zombies, weird werecat monsters...Michael Jackson! Scary stuff!
-
Vancouver did their part on the beach, about a block from where I live and I gotta say it was pretty cool. (Even if it was pulled off on a gorgeous, sunny day instead of the dark of night.)

sample hater comments:
-this is cool news?
-I saw this on my brother's friend's blog like 10 minutes ago, AINTITOLDNEWS!!!p>
-ooh, a bunch of gay dancing, who cares?
-this site used to be blah blah blah
-[insert DANNY GLOVER'S DICKBLOOD comment here] -
I had no idea this was becoming "a thing." The only one I had ever seen was that prison (Phillipines or somewhere) where they had choreographed all the prisoners to re-enact it, complete with individual roles and groups, as opposed to everyone doing the same dance as it is here.Looks fun, though. I'd love to take part in something like that!
-
And you've got a winner.

Man I miss the old Michael Jackson. It's so sad when I think about what could of been. That man singled handedly took the Music Video genere to infinity and beyond. I still remember staying up until 12:00am, waiting for Friday Night videos to come on just to see a Michael Jackson Video. This was before the days when VCR's were affordable, so If you wanted to see the King of Pop, you have wait countless hours in front of TV just get a glimpse of his musical magic. Those were the good old days.

I'm pretty sure you guys got pimpslapped by these guys: http://tinyurl.com/27poze
-
So I ain't interested.
-
MJ used to be fucking brilliant, then he went fucking crazy
-
Actually - the only ones doing the entire dance was that triangle in the middle. The other prisoners were just doing small parts of the dance, that's why they don't count. PLUS - if memory serves that was forced via a crazy warden. And wasn't voluntary.
-
Kidding ofcourse.
But seriously, remember when Michael Jackson was still... Michael Jackson. -
say what you want harry, but the filipino one was ten times better. the was so much smoother. this people are even synchronized so this shit shouldn't count. it was still cool though.
-
say what you want harry, but the filipino one was ten times better. there's was so much smoother. these people aren't even synchronized so this shit shouldn't count. it was still cool though. ok, that's better.
-
....if their hopes and aspirations for success or fame in life depend on getting people to dance to "thriller"....that's sad.
-
It's called having fun. You should try it sometime.
-
Ahhh the memories of Michael showing up on screen with women.
-
Another cool thing yesterday, World Zombie Day, with the largest contingent of zombies gathered at good old Monroeville Mall. World record number this year (unofficially) of 1375 zombies that participated in the walk to help raise food for local food banks. Who'd have thunk, zombies giving food? http://tiny.cc/O0hdd
-
I'm so proud of him!!!!
-
I wanted to be there. Too much going on...too little time. I learned the dance and everything. I am so sad:( but it could not be helped. Congratulations to all involved!

Great idea. Looks like everyone had fun. It's funny to watch those who would forget what was next and quickly adapt.
-
I think Guiness has lowered it's standards. It seems they'll let anything be a record.
-
"Say what you want Harry but the Filipino one was ten times better. Theirs was so much smoother. These people aren't even synchronized so this shit shouldn't count. It was still cool though. Ok, that's (even) better."
-
He did warn us that all of this playacting as zombies would leave us unprepared for a real zombie attack.

...and I thought Austin was this supercool bohemian oasis...
by pdorwick
...in a very red state. I guess I was wrong.
-
That was the coolest shit ever...even if Harry says it doesnt count, it counts in the world of being awesome. that chick was fucking hot!
-
I thought Mayor Wynn (Winn?) was a hip dude but his support of Proposition 2 and its expansion of commercial development is disheartening. VOTE NO ON PROP 2!
-
Buttastic.
-
Who knew?
-
That prison thing doesnt count! Ours is cooler! If it has anything to do with Austin, it's automatically the best!!!!Please... getting a group together to all do the same dance is a fun event, but choreographing a MUCH larger crowd to work together to create an entire number with different parts, etc is WAY cooler. Get off your Austin high horse and accept that you've still been outdone.
-
Can we just agree that both of these performances, and the many more around the world, are pretty freakin' funny and cool. I just watched the prison performance, and while it has more people in it, Austin's performance DOES have more people doing the actual dance. It was also overseen by a representative from Guiness, SO THERE! However, that dude playing the chick at the prison is fucking hilarious, and I love the opening where they are just zombie-ing around.
This is funny stuff - and gets me all warmed up for Halloween! -
that means it blows
-
MTV is such a train wreck today. VH1 isn't far behind.
-
that is a serious question. debating the nuances of mass thriller choreography is lame enough, and harry was barely on a fucking high horse of defense. can't you just enjoy it for what it is without throwing in about 10 negative comments and a couple of jabs at austin. your life must be seriously shitty where you are this negative and would actually troll something this fun. you suck and you know it.
-
There, I said it. Now, fuck off.
-
Yeah, that's not the only city that uses that slogan. I live in Denver and I've seen lots of "Keep Boulder Weird" hats, bumper stickers and t-shirts. Portland uses it, Eerie uses it.
-
Gayest...right? Thriller? I thought Texas was full of badasses! Turns out it may just be full of ass bandits.
-
First of al, I freely admitted the Austin thing was cool and said it looked like lots of fun.and "10 negative comments"..."trolling"...?? I had TWO total comments in this talkback, and the first one was not negative in any way.Al I said is that Harry and co. have a tendency to think Austin is the "cool" capital of the world, and anything there is better no matter what anyone else does. You got serious hostility issues, Birdy. Take a breath, count to 10...
-
I keep seeing Mayor Will Wynn (yes that's his real name) doing that dance on the news. He looked like a damn fool. Well I guess i'm glad we set the record. By the way I wouldn't limit the fans of Thriller to just "geeks". That video/song has universal appeal.
-
Or the long center or whatever it's called? That is a very nice view of the city, I must say.
-
...place is as whitebread as it comes. It is full of weirdo fundie christers, though... I guess they could qualify as weird...
-
So enjoy it eh? fucking awsome in my book, too many homophobic red necks on here im afraid...
-
this looks like so much fun. Austin makes me want to go to Texas...which is saying something.
-
I just like that Harry replied to some idiot who calls himself DamnMichaelBay. .... .that makes me Chuckle Out Loud.
-
I clicked on that one guys link to see the philipino(sp?) prison version and found something even cooler. How awesome is this? http://tinyurl.com/ytz9hr all other versions of thriller have officially been faced.

The coolest thing was actually Ken Foree at Monroeville Mall
by hikaru ichijo
He lead the zombie walk, in character, pulling a mannequin in a wheelbarrel, through the mall. You don't report this. What gives? Is there something significant about doing "Thriller" is Austin? Was it filmed there or something? It's good outside the box thinking and a great idea for World Zombie Day, so maybe next year Pittsburgh will incorporate into their own festivities and shatter your record. Enjoy it while you can.
-
have 800 ppl flip through magazines at the same time, or hang laundry in the yard at the same time... That would be cool.
-
concept wise,,, neat idea but when I sit back and think about it......what losers!!!!!!..........GET A LIFE!
and I thought FurCon was a bunch of losers,,,boy I was wrong
I'm more impressed with the phillipino prisoners.......
ummm , i'm done talkin'...back to whatever -
very very good find there sir!!
-
than i live in nerdworld.
-
What a bunch of fucking assholes. With the entire fucking world melting down this is how these dicks spend their time? Mankind does not DESERVE to ascend or thrive and this stoopid shit proves that point very well. MY GOD! Why couldn't these dicks shove a fucking sign in their mitts and head down to the nearest courthouse and demand Bush stop the fucking unending fucking aggression? Better to imitate some retarded pedophile's dance number, that's a great use of your time.
-
...so I could do Brock Sampson donuts through every inch of that chipole-eating crowd of douchebags.
-
I'd love to know what you do with your time that is so outstanding that you can stand on your pedestal and criticize other people. Solving the economy crisis, perhaps, or maybe you're saving starving children from death and exploitation?
So what, they're dancing to 'Thriller'? Is it so wrong to have a pasttime that doesn't involve curing cancer or giving shelter to the homeless. Just because you think it's a waste of time doesn't mean it's not fun. And maybe some of the folks in the crowd actually do great things with their time when they're not dancing. You certainly wouldn't know for sure, since you're busy spending every waking moment of your life being productive. -
that is outstanding enough for you...mortal.
-
Suck compared to the prisoners. Bring them back.
-
I don't remember seeing that when I was in Austin?
-
Just another j-horror remake. That's just louder and bigger and not as good as the original.
-
..dancing to Thriller IS wrong, it is an afront to human dignity. What these people are doing reduces us all collectively as a race, if you don't understand why it will do no good to explain it.
-
It's overrated.
-
Did you break out the Electric Boogielow?
-
..it's one of the few things in life that can't be taken away, only surrendered. Honestly, don't you find the level of effort put forth over something so mind-numbingly stupid a bit insulting? It's an excess, like diamond socks or $50,000 funerals for pets. Sure people do it, but those people deserve a severe flogging when you consider the level of suffering and misery in the world that goes unchecked. Sometimes the utter frivolous ignorance of humanity needs to be railed against, to do less weakens what noble human spirit remains.

Was ACORN there? I bet there were really only 37 people!
by snake foreskin
It's all just smoke and mirrors.
-
then at least for one day, my life was 10x cooler than yours, rich boy.
-
Second video, about 30 seconds in.
-
not when Fall Out Boy did it, not even that movie (13 Going on 30?), but when Naomi Campbell did it on a water commercial. She sucked at doing that dance. Chef did it the best.
-
Fall-Out Boy did Beat It. I'm not aware that they did Thriller (though I could be wrong - I'm not much of a music guy)
-
Whatta buncha fags!
I used to live in Austin and so regretted having to move.
Now I'm glad I left! -
i thought when i read the title that this was lame, actually entered just to say how lame this concept is, however after watching the videos i want to be part of that!!!
-
That brought a huge smile to my face. Plus there was something hot about seeing girls in the 2nd video doing this dressed up as zombies. Guess I have a sexy dancing zombie fetish.
