Coolest Thing That Happened Yesterday! World Record Shattering THRILLER Sync Dancing in Austin: 881!!!

Published at:  Oct 27, 2008 3:45:38 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... All geeks, everywhere love THRILLER - I remember the Making of THRILLER that appeared on MTV back in the day - and when Vincent Price did that THRILLER rap at the end... brilliance. John Landis, Rick Baker and Michael Jackson were all in their finest form. It was simply a great time. Now there's this THRILL THE WORLD movement - to establish worldwide synchronized THRILLER dance offs. Here in Austin, it caught hold a bit deeper and wider than anywhere else. You see, the slogan for Austin is KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD - and folks like the Alamo Drafthouse, our mayor Will Wynn and well... our citizenry - tries their best to keep it going. We shattered the previous World Record of 140 Synchronized THRILLER dancers - by having 881 Synchronized THRILLER dancers going at it. Don't believe me... watch the videos below - Ain't It Cool?

The fact that a community can get together and agree to do something that zany en mass just goes to show how tight the community really is. I don't think you would see anything like that anywhere in America outside of maybe NYC. Bravo.

    When did this "trend" start?

    by shiftyeyeddog2

I had no idea this was becoming "a thing." The only one I had ever seen was that prison (Phillipines or somewhere) where they had choreographed all the prisoners to re-enact it, complete with individual roles and groups, as opposed to everyone doing the same dance as it is here.Looks fun, though. I'd love to take part in something like that!

Man I miss the old Michael Jackson. It's so sad when I think about what could of been. That man singled handedly took the Music Video genere to infinity and beyond. I still remember staying up until 12:00am, waiting for Friday Night videos to come on just to see a Michael Jackson Video. This was before the days when VCR's were affordable, so If you wanted to see the King of Pop, you have wait countless hours in front of TV just get a glimpse of his musical magic. Those were the good old days.

Actually - the only ones doing the entire dance was that triangle in the middle. The other prisoners were just doing small parts of the dance, that's why they don't count. PLUS - if memory serves that was forced via a crazy warden. And wasn't voluntary.

That prison thing doesnt count! Ours is cooler! If it has anything to do with Austin, it's automatically the best!!!!Please... getting a group together to all do the same dance is a fun event, but choreographing a MUCH larger crowd to work together to create an entire number with different parts, etc is WAY cooler. Get off your Austin high horse and accept that you've still been outdone.

    by rando calrisian

Can we just agree that both of these performances, and the many more around the world, are pretty freakin' funny and cool. I just watched the prison performance, and while it has more people in it, Austin's performance DOES have more people doing the actual dance. It was also overseen by a representative from Guiness, SO THERE! However, that dude playing the chick at the prison is fucking hilarious, and I love the opening where they are just zombie-ing around.

This is funny stuff - and gets me all warmed up for Halloween!

First of al, I freely admitted the Austin thing was cool and said it looked like lots of fun.and "10 negative comments"..."trolling"...?? I had TWO total comments in this talkback, and the first one was not negative in any way.Al I said is that Harry and co. have a tendency to think Austin is the "cool" capital of the world, and anything there is better no matter what anyone else does. You got serious hostility issues, Birdy. Take a breath, count to 10...

He lead the zombie walk, in character, pulling a mannequin in a wheelbarrel, through the mall. You don't report this. What gives? Is there something significant about doing "Thriller" is Austin? Was it filmed there or something? It's good outside the box thinking and a great idea for World Zombie Day, so maybe next year Pittsburgh will incorporate into their own festivities and shatter your record. Enjoy it while you can.

I'd love to know what you do with your time that is so outstanding that you can stand on your pedestal and criticize other people. Solving the economy crisis, perhaps, or maybe you're saving starving children from death and exploitation?

So what, they're dancing to 'Thriller'? Is it so wrong to have a pasttime that doesn't involve curing cancer or giving shelter to the homeless. Just because you think it's a waste of time doesn't mean it's not fun. And maybe some of the folks in the crowd actually do great things with their time when they're not dancing. You certainly wouldn't know for sure, since you're busy spending every waking moment of your life being productive.

..it's one of the few things in life that can't be taken away, only surrendered. Honestly, don't you find the level of effort put forth over something so mind-numbingly stupid a bit insulting? It's an excess, like diamond socks or $50,000 funerals for pets. Sure people do it, but those people deserve a severe flogging when you consider the level of suffering and misery in the world that goes unchecked. Sometimes the utter frivolous ignorance of humanity needs to be railed against, to do less weakens what noble human spirit remains.
