The Trades Have The First U.S. Reviews For QUANTUM OF SOLACE!!

Published at:  Oct 26, 2008 10:53:33 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both just posted the first U.S. reviews of “Quantum of Solace,” which is opening earlier in Britain than in the United States.

The consensus? Not as good as “Casino Royale.”

Variety says:

… Played with a cold, mechanical efficiency that recalls the "Bourne" movies, with almost no downtime or emotional hooks, "Quantum" will find some solace in beefy initial returns but looks unlikely to find a royale spot in Bond history or fans' hearts. …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… Fans of [“Casino Royale”] and the earlier films might be disappointed that the new picture allows hardly any flourishes of style and character in the 007 tradition, but moviegoers seeking an adrenaline rush will be well pleased. …

British reviews say much the same. You can find links to those here.

It opens in Britain, France and Sweden Oct. 31.

It opens in 61 other countries, including Russia, India, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Turkey, Taiwan, Thailand, Slovakia, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Iceland, Switzerland, Latvia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Norway, Portugal, The Netherlands, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, Nicaragua and El Salvador by Nov. 7.

It opens in the United States, Mexico and Canada Nov. 14.

I'll still see it. Craig's Bond seems pretty less humorous, but it looks like a decent action flick. Especially if it sets up a SPECTRE-type adversary for the good guys to fight in future films.

    by yomomma

Haven't we seen enough "flourishes of style" in the last 21 (or 23) Bond films. It's nice that Casino Royale made it saomewhat plausible that a Bond film could be critically acclaimed, but I also like having a few series around that reliably deliver on the action and the T&A. Dark and overly intricate is great for Batman, but leave us guys some testosterone films.

    Bring back Brosnan-style Bond

    by critch

Bond is not and should never be Bourne. Casino Royale was 1/3 of a classic, and was merely passable. Not enough action, too much cards and romance. And in the US at least, it did about 7 million more than Die Another Day. It was also in a few hundred more theatres and released a few years later, meaning that if you take everything into account, it made LESS, at least here in the United States. Probably why we're getting it 2 weeks after open, by which I guarantee you we'll already have a good copy available for download.

It'll do well, but Bond isn't as popular as you might think. 167 million is hardly a huge blockbuster in today's market. The only reason this will approach 200 is because A. it's short B. Huge opening to offset the huge dropoff and C. There's not a damn thing coming out this season thanks to Warner Bros. moving HP to July, probably knocking 50+ million off it's total, and Paramount sending Star Trek to die right between Wolverine and Terminator.

Amy, if this keeps going, we'll never see another spectacular Bond epic. We'll just keep getting Bourne Bond.

Greedy producers have too much control

    by turdontherun

What the fuck is the point in hiring a director known for character based dramas and then having this entry be a pared down bourne-like action thriller (with a worryingly short run-time no less)? what was the pont of hiring him at all? the director is almost negligible. Let's hope that the momentum built up from casino royale isn't squandered here. there was a chance to do something truly epic with this film, like the dark knight to batman begins, increasing the moral complexity and ambiguous nature of bond in tandem with a ruthless and violent revenge thriller a la licence to kill (although much better and with more bondian flourishes than that movie), as bond continues to evolve in to the character he will become. but alas, I fear we will get 106 mins of bond chasing and evading bad guys, and little more.

    by continentalop

Or to be more precise, they don't need as much pointless, overblown action, such as the entire sequence at the Miami airport and the shootout in Venice. In my opinion those parts where unnecessary and gratuitous. Maybe I am in the minority amongst filmgoers, but I don't need wall-to-wall car cashes and action to keep me interested throughout a film. Honestly, I usually prefer the buildup to an action scene to most action scenes.

Obviously you're not familiar with the original Fleming novels, the early Connery's, On Her Majesty's Secret Service (despite Lazenby), and the Dalton movies. As well as Casino Royale, of course. Those are the true depictions of what the character is supposed to be like, not the Moore/Brosnan fun factories (or the later Conneries like YOLT and DAF) - though I like those movies well enough on their own terms. Bond IS quite a brooding, morally complex character - though this is balanced with humour and style and wit. So no, not Bourne, who is nowhere near as complex or problematic as Bond as a character (far too earnest and politically correct for my tastes - but that's just me). But he is certainly not a bright, cheerful, unambiguous hero, nor is the world he inhabits. So rather like Batman in those respects. and no, the villain should not be some sub-miami vice drug-dealer character, either - I meant the general tone and toughness of Licence to Kill, not its many generic and un-Bondian shortcomings.

    The problem is expectations

    by mrclark

Thats whats going to hurt this film. I don't know how people can expect there to be the same level of emotional depth there was in Casino Royale, that was the origin story that film to us from inexperienced rookie Bond to the fully formed emotionless killer we all know so well.

Honestly how much emotion was there in the first 21 entries to the series (aside from the one he gets married in)? For better or worse they crammed all the emotional development into one film so now that its out of the way what we get is the cold blooded killer that cares about nothing else than Queen and country.

From here on out i expect the series to go back to the old forumal (albeit much more grounded in reality) of being a thrill ride with lots of action fast cars hot women and great stunt sequences.

    by prossor

Isn't watching Bond supposed to make you want to be him? THat's the ultimate litmus test for me. Who the fuck wants to be Craig's Bond? a hulked out meathead with a face like he's sucking on a lemon who runs, tumbles and jumps around like Sonic the Hedgehog. leave that for the John McClanes and Jason Bournes. While blowing his top revenging with his itchy trigger finger and the unintentional hilarity of seeing Paul Haggis's dialogue like "my armor is gone you stripped it from me" being delivered by this imploding face. And his emoting, dragging out his angst and peeling the layers back, leave that nauseous shit for the oxygen network. Look at this photo ---> http://i33.tinypic.com/23lz7kx.jpg this isn't James Bond this is the fucking Terminator. I do miss the qualities of the past Bonds, the cool detachment in the face of danger, and unflappable suaveness which made Bond, Bond. 1962-2002 it was a good run Mr. Bond, may one day you come back.Look at this photo

    by dioxholster

i said it before many times and i will say it again...this bond got no charm, got no humor, got nothing that seems Bondish at all, hes just another action gu. what made the Bond character special was his style which was best portrayed by Pierce Brosnian no doubt, that style is gone now many pple mistaken that disappearance for a Bond Orgin story where he still gains bit by bit his personality; well you know what he wont hes gonna remain the same. and for fucking out loud, why an orgin story Bond aint a superhero who gains his superpowers but he had to remain as a mysterious character where we only get to see a glimpse of what he really is from each movie--a different aspect of his character is revealed and his haunting past is exposed. this bond truly sucks. Goldeneye was the best....and i blame the Batmanization and Bournization of movies for this and I also blame the Battlestar Galagatilization for the cancellation of stargate.

    Bourne Vs Bond

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

The Bourne Identity is a great film, but the sequels are chop-socky edited rubbish. All style, no substance. The only similarity i can think of with Casino Royale and Bourne is Casino made Bond grittier. Less ridiculous. It gave Bond more character than i'd seen before. Is this a good thing for purists? Maybe not. One of my friends couldn't believe there were no silhouetted girls in the opening credits. "Thats not Bond!" Well, I'm no Bond purist, and i really like where they started going with the character in Casino. And the end scene in Venice was awesome. And after Brosnans films (even though I loved GoldenEye) the franchise NEEDED a new angle. The World is Not Enough, Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day were embarrasing. I'm looking forward to Quantum. Will be seeing it this friday.

To the guy who said that Bond is NOT supposed to

    by coughlins laws

be like TDK, uh, actually it is. Ian Fleming never liked any of the Bond's portrayed on film. Daniel Craig is the closest to the Bond in the books as we've gotten. Connery was to smooth, Moore was to jokey, and Brosnan was not masuline enough. Timothy Dalton actually came close. Bond was supposed to be a more menacing figure. He wasn't a ladies man, he was a heartless womanizer, which they have set up Craig to be. The only thing I thought was awful about the Casino Royale is watching him jump around construction sites and cranes to catch that little acrobat. As far as his arrogance and ruthlessness, I think Craig has done pretty damn good...

I was thinking. watching the SOuth bank show special. a retro bond. it would have the look of the 1960's but be futuristic at the same time. it would have elements of Harry Palmer, dangerman and mission impossible, man in the white suit. throw In a metropolis landscape. it wouldnt have to be bond it could be a new character. but then bond was based on people that Fleming knew he was in 30 company. as well as himself.

    by emeraldboy

a couple of weeks with Joanna lumley. Bond is very much a creation of a certain time. that is long gone. on the south bank show. Barbara Brocolli revealed that Bruce Fierstein came to her and Micheal G wilson and suggested that M be turned into a woman. They were nervous as you can imagine but Barbara Broccoli said she liked the idea. That line about mysoginist dinosaur is one that feminists had wanted to hear for a very long time. They hated bond. some women loved the glamourous, sexy strong women. these purists dont like the radical changes. but they had to be done.

    by dioxholster

so he can die there and get rid of the stupid idiot. seriously, bond should never be TDK at all, what the world is like Gotham city now? Bond is a retro colorful character one that knows when to crack a joke and when to be serious. when u watch QOS or casino royale you will never gain that feeling that you always had ever since u were a kid when u watched a bond movie. its all hack and bash now, no substance just exaggerated dark realism that leaves us cold earning for the subtle style that is Bond, one who doesnt need to jump construction cranes to show that he is an action guy, and one who doesnt have to lick fingers in the shower to show hes a romantic.

I strongly Agree, M needs to be a man!!!

    by dioxholster

not because i hate women in leadership roles, but because the Craig bond is out of control and she cant control that fucking retard of a spy. a better choice would be a Black Man as hes boss should set him straight, tell him something like "OHHH Its On noW! whiteboy, No one fucks with M, No one breaks into my house and gets away with it, I will do to you what I did to Your mother" followed by a gun to the head.

seriously though, a man as his boss can contain that rascal. i think craig Bond is scary, I think MI6 created a monster. and now hes on the loose. a good story would be James Bond as the main Villain who wants to bomb London because of what they did to his parents. and the hero that would kill him would be Jason Bourne.
    THATS RIGHT!!! CROSSOVER!!!!!!! YAY!

to make a bond film which is not based on flemings books or short stories. if they go down the rogue spy route, they will need to very carefull that dont copy Jack Bauer of 24hrs. That is what Jack is after all. a rogue spy who doesnt work for anyone. but they could make the Charlie Higson books and go back to bonds school days. But and this a big but. by maelstrom_zero

I find it ironic that many self-professed geeks make such a hullabaloo over diverging from source material (i.e. no Tom Bombadil, or Toby's organic web shooters). Yet, when it comes to Connery and Dalton and Brosnan's take on Bond--which geeks seem to prefer--they're so far from the original Fleming material, that it's laughable. Casino Royale is, and always will be, the best Bond movie ever made because it channels Fleming with uncanny accuracy. Screw death rays and gadgets and poor humor.

    by dasher

It doesn't surprise me that Quantum of Solace is getting weaker reviews than Casino Royale. With the exception of Connery, a Bond actor's second film has tended not to measure up to their first.

The Man With The Golden Gun - Moore

    Licence to Kill - Dalton

    Tomorrow Never Dies - Brosnan

Again, only Connery managed to defy this trend, but he is Connery, after all. :)

Who says a running time will determine how good a film is? Both Dr No and Goldfinger go for 110min. If Quantum ran 4 minutes longer, would it be guaranteed to be as good as those? Is Meet Joe Black a good film because it goes for 3 hours? Is Toy Story a bad film because it goes for 81 minutes? Very odd argument.

Women on AICN (yup, we're here!)

    by lambchop

Hi Dioxholster - I'm female, almost the same age as Daniel Craig and I've seen the film. I really enjoyed it but not because he's a womanizer. You're clearly speaking to the wrong women:) I particularly like Craig in the role because he looks like he could really snap your neck without hesitation. I'd prefer him at my side when walking down a dark alley. Brosnan and Moore never quite got that across but they had their own appeal in the role. Connery however, did have the same toughness on-screen that Craig has. In the 1st movie Bond loses the love of his life - 2nd movie he's consumed by hate and desire for vengeance but towards the end of QOS I felt that there was some form of acceptance/closure. There's an emotional arc I found appealing. . So, bottom line, I enjoyed this new incarnation of Bond but that doesn't mean I still enjoy watching the previous Bonds. Each had their own appeal. Would love to see feedback once more AICNers have seen QOS.

After all, with this story starting exactly 20 minutes after the ending of Casino Royale, throwing in a few jokes here and there would be very out of place. by dioxholster

you might like him but Bond was never supposed to be a tough guy, hes supposed to be a normally shaped guy who you dont necessarily run away from or fear him. people wont mess with me if Craig was walking with me cos hes a big guy as in masculine and stuff but if i were walking with Brosnian; no one would fear him---they fear him later after they experience his slick cunning actions. remember that scene in goldeneye at the beginning where he runs away from the russians; thats the bond i like. the one that is smart from the getgo uses what he has with him and at times where hes vulnerable he gets hit and smacked around by tough bad masculine guys.

craig's tough look doesnt allow his charm and slick attitude to be used. i personally always wanted to be Bond who didnt look like a tough guy but a handsome charming retro-gentleman fellow who used his brains more and was vulnerable at the same time

    Bourne vs Bond

    by i am rocko

I agree with a talkbacker above that Casino Royale did not remind me of the two Jason Bourne sequels. In fact the Bourne Identity (still the best one of that trilogy BTW) reminded me of the very early Bond films- like From Russia With Love. Craig I think does bring some humour to the role (like the scene on the train the first time he meets Vesper, the "that last hand almost killed me line") and also gives some of a John Mclane type expression in the "I can't believe that just happened" vein in some of the action scenes. I don't need QOS to be as good as CR, I just need it to be good and solidify Craig's tenure so that he can continue and I can't wait to see him meet Moneypenny, Q etc- I really think they should be back for the next film. I really wish Dalton had the chance to make one or two more Bonds. I think his intepretation was very good and it is funny that Licence to Kill was criticised for the same reasons people loved CR- less gadgets, more gritty and a rouge Bond who does some amazing stuff, but also messes up. Connery is still god though and From Russia with Love the best bond film ever!!!

The direction of the Bond story

    by frozen01

I agree that the new Bond isn't as suave as the old, but can we please remember that all we've seen so far is the origin story? Bond hasn't had time to learn those debauner tricks that become his signature yet and Casino Royale left off with him just STARTING to become the Bond we know and love (or knew and loved, if you're like me).
Give 'em another chance. Let Bond grow, so that we have an actual character that we have got to watch develop, instead of one just handed to us in a nice pretty package with a bow wrapped around it.

    by mr gorilla

...But in terms of plot some of them (For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy) respected the audience in terms of story & plot (if not execution) much more than the recent ones - including Casino Royale. Dalton's The Living Daylights, too. They might not be fashionable right now, but they actually took time to reveal their plots so that you didn't feel you were simply leaping from one punch-up to the next. Bond had to do some detective work - and so did the viewer. They felt like Bond films! Much as I love Daniel Craig, I felt that meeting 'the bad guy' straight after the opening titles seemed a bit on the nose. Of course, detective work is less fun these days as so much of it is done at a computer.

Most of the others were superficial somewhat misogynistic male power fantasies, Casino Royale had a lot more depth. Also, this one appears to be an actual sequel in the series, which given the events in CR, may explain the constant action as this is the payback portion of the story.

    by scottindc

I, like so many others, was a doubter. Daniel Craig didn't work for me..UNTIL I actually saw the movie. It amazes me how many people now want to criticize Casino Royale..not because they didnt like it - but because they think it makes them look cool to be a 'contrarian'. It's like the people who are now criticizing TDK for being "dark, plodding and plotless". Totally ludicrous and makes the critics look foolish. Casino Royale was an overly long but altogether excellent Bond film. It did need some editing to shorten the ending; but the film itself was a much needed enema in the fetid ass that was the Bond franchise.

    by peter skellen

All point to Eon being running scared of Bourne and the film being bleak and not a huge amount of fun. Call me mad but I thought that was the point of Bond films - a refuge from reality. Hopefully, one day, Bond will be restored to his former glory with an actor who doesn't need shoe-lifts or look like an Albanian plumber. I have to laugh when the early Conery films are held up as realistic templates for the Craig era. Watch From Russia With Love. Connery breezes through the film as if he's in a Bob Hope spy caper! I heard Barbara and MG Wilson do a radio interview today and neither struck me as the sharpest knife in the box. Babs, bless her, seemed to think it was a tremendous stroke of genius to keep moving the gunbarrel around in each film. What did she do with her Dad was still around? Make the coffee?

is there a gun barell opening scene and does it apapear before the opening..and it it a classic one or does it add something new like DAD and CAR did...thanks in advanceas for the series as a whole if i were in charge heres what i would do. Get a new M preferable a male and one that respects bond..(i always get the feeling dench hates bond and is always rooting against him)also keep the films coming out 2 years apart and ensure an actor is signed for 5 or more movies..dalton and brosnan's era was way too short, an actor can play bond from his 30 close to his 50's, craig has already hinted that he might not return after a third one and that would be a shame..you can't have that fast of a turn around time and expect audiences to fiollow along and invest themselves in the series, also bring in more m16 characters, the banter between bond and q as well as money penny was a big part of the ealir films..i even miss the debreiefin scene in m's officeand finally..stop it with the rogue agent crap, i understand bond needs to work outside the lines occasionally, but he should still have the support of m16, the last few films he's been a rogue agent and it just sends the films into bourne/24 ripoff area..i get the feeling QOS looks like a bond as a rogue agent movie. And lastly go back to flemings novels and grab unused ideas...theres tons of stuff that was ignored in the previous films, not enough to base a plot on but enough to base scenes within a story on..hell TSWLM was a complete creation of the films producers they used nothing of the plot form the book for that movie (fleming didn't like that book, but he's dead and i'm sure his estate would allow a direct copy of that plot now)

    From Solace to Soulless

    by acquanetta

This isn't surprising, considering that these are the same people that gave us Die Another Day. People act like Pierce Brosnan wrote and directed his own films, and the producers had nothing to do with them. In reality, Brosnan spent most of his tenure pushing for a return to Fleming, while the producers opted to play it safe. The Sunday Times really opened fire on the new film, while 007 Magazine was also hugely disappointed. It's amazing that the producers apparently learned nothing from the success of Casino Royale. They've gone straight back to relying on an overdose of action- which is one of the things people criticized most about Brosnan's films. But, after all, these are the same people that gave us Die Another Day. What did you really expect?

i just noticed the fact that he only does two women per movie. thats not much. that means he approximately fucked 44 women in his lifetime as a 007. thats not much at all. any douche can break that record during his sophomore year.

Casino Royale had the best balance of any Bond film

    by performingmonkey

Looks like they threw that out the window for Quantum of Solace. Now it's just action directed by someone who's never directed action (apart from the pirate scenes in Finding Neverland). If anything there should have been LESS action than in Casino Royale. This should have been more of a character piece with tension bubbling, then by all means do a third one with a shitload of action. Sounds like they well and truly blew it. The worst thing is that the reviews are just *meh*. None of the classic Bonds are *meh* even if some of them (View To A Kill, Octopussy) are fucking terrible.

    Barbara Broccoli

    by emeraldboy

is a real temper tantrum throwing control freak. Everyone who works on these films is very scarred of her. Craig was hired because they wanted an actor who would tow the line. Brosnan was fired because he seen as a threat to broccoli and they fired him in a brutal manner. In interview after interview Craig has been told to say that the following line "the bourne films are very good and I like them but the bond franchise has been around longer". Even the director Marc foster said they are stylistically different. its bs because all of the bourne movies were co-ordinate by dan bradley. who just happens to be the stunt co-ordinator on qauntum of solace.

Adam West was seroiusly going to play Bond after Connery because he was friends with Albert Broccoli but said Bond shoould be British so he didn't, but imagine if he did, i think it would have been pretty cool. As for Barbara Broccoli, no one should believe anything that wafts out of her rotten vag, it's just part of the PR campaign to pimp the money, when Albert died GoldenEye was the lsat movie he influenced, and when she took over afterward the movies have sucked. Any coincidence there that GoldenEye was the last great Bond??

Please bring back John Cleese and Martin Campbell and get rid of Barbara Broccoli. She is the reason that we only got one decent Brosnan Bond.

I truly miss Cleese. While he would never fill the shoes of good ol' Desmond, he brought in a sense of humor all his own. Cleese was the only good thing from Die another Day and World is Not Enough.

    Reviews

    by mr_p

I have read loads of reviews in the UK rather than just the two in the article and they are split down the middle but they are all either 3/5 or 4/5 stars and noone has said it is a poor movie so why all the fuss and chat as thought its a disaster. At least theres no way it will be as rank as Indy and look how much that made. As for Bourne - who cares the two sequels were absolute gash and I fell asleep during the last one. Why would they be running scared of Bourne, I am not aware of an iminent release of Bourne to threaten them. And one last plus who cares if its the same stunt co-ordinator when has that been an issue with any other film ever?

    Fleming's Casting....

    by jacksparness

Again, despite people saying Fleming wanted Moore as opposed to Connery to play Bond, saying that he didn't like the casting decisions for the films is ridiculous! He never saw the Bond movies, bar maybe Dr.No. His opinion does not count. How do we know that he didn't change his mind about Connery after watching Dr.No?

Brosnan Wanted to control the franchise...

    by emeraldboy

He wanted a say in almost every single aspect of the production. and for that he was fired. Barbara Broccoli is a steely broad. so the mantle of bond was ripped from brosnan's hands. and given to someone who would do what he was told. Craig has admitted that he does from time to time make his suggestions heard. one was that he does his own stunts. He gets his way some of time.

Looks like Jonathan Ross's Time at the bbc is coming to an end. 10 days ago he and Russell brand phoned andrew sachs and left crude messages on his sachs answer machine. The show was pre-recorded. and filmed in digital and downloaded on to Brands video blog. called my viddyvid. Someone in the bbc still went and braodcast it. big mistake. Brands contract with the beeb will be terminated. What angered everyone was Brand's message about having sex with Sachs Grand daughter. There have more than 5,000 complaints. Mps are calling for brand and ross to sacked or suspended. BRand will almost never work in the us again his controversial appearance on the tonigh show and after calling president bush a retard on tv.

    THE AWFULISM

    by mr gorilla

Thank god someone else agrees that CASINO ROYALE was tedious. You know, if I want to see a drama with characters, something that will move me and tell me about the human condition, I'll go see Carl Theodor Dreyer or Nicolas Ray thank you very much. I go to Bond for a balls-to-the-wall thrillride, with some laughs thrown in for good measure. I mean, Christ, was anyone here actually MOVED when Vesper died? They strung it out for-fucking-ever. Compare with the brilliantly underplayed way they killed of Diana Rigg in OHMSS.

I liked it better than Casino Royale (MINOR SPOILERS)

    by novaman5000

Which dragged for me a bit and didn't have much standout action aside from the opening chase IMO. Here, the on-foot chase through the city that the movie opens with (AFTER the beginning car chase which was a little too MTV-like in its editing for my tastes) is thrilling and well done, begins with a bang and features that great fall onto the construction site, and there are other consistently standout set pieces as well.
The boat chase is great and pretty inventive and as improbable as the plane battle might have been i could not help but be entertained. Opera scene was well done also. The hotel fuel cell concept will either work or not for some people, i was ok with it, but it could be seen as a bit silly... The only way the writers could figure out a way to blow up an entire building room by room. I also liked how Camille wasn't simply someone for Bond to fuck- She had her own motivations and there was a respect between them that previous bond girls never seemed to get the benefit of.

My gripes: The villain, while interesting, is underpowered YET AGAIN. This new series has yet to have a real badass for bond to go up against, though the introduction of the Quantum group sets the stage for a pretty epic 3rd film... Provided they continue this storyline. Agent (Strawberry) fields doesn't get enough screen time, but she does get a couple memorable moments. Bond's motivation seems to get lost as time goes on and he seems less about revenge and more about just getting the job done about halfway through the movie.
Yes, it's more of an action movie than a character study this time around but in no way is Daniel Craig's bond anywhere near the silly mess he had become before the reboot.
This is a dark, brutal movie and if you loved Casino Royale, you'll at least LIKE this one. If you thought Casino was a big of a drag at times, I think you'll find, like me, a marked improvement in pacing.

    by acquanetta

"I also liked how Camille wasn't simply someone for Bond to fuck- She had her own motivations and there was a respect between them that previous bond girls never seemed to get the benefit of." They've actually been taking that approach- on and off- ever since The Spy Who Loved Me. In particular, Licence To Kill and Tomorrow Never Dies are two were it was readily on display.

    The dubious nature of reviews

    by turdontherun

Did someone above just quote a Daily Mail review? As anybody from the UK will know, their despicable 'reviews' (as with everything else in that newspaper)mean next to nothing. As for that odious blow-hard "Dr." Kermode, I have no respect for his pompous and frequently biased opinions. But the jury remains out - I will go by the opinion of the best judge of all - myself. And for anyone who found the wonderful Casino Royale 'tedious' and suggest a return to the cartoonish and bland Brosnan era (where the films really were generic action vehicles), I have only one thing to say - invisible cars. If that's your preference over Craig's layered and interesting take on the role, then there's no hope for you. I expect Quantum of Solace will be a step down unfortunately, but we'll see.

Kermode is a pretentious bawbag who's opinion I hold no stock with and the Daily Mail's demographic is middle aged homemakers hence so many articles on "how to look pretty for my man" and "how to lose weight" so I can't see them promoting Bond to their readership. Like you I will decide for myself but to be fair I will like it no matter what and it will be a few weeks before I am really objective!

Hmm, I thought Die Another Day was 2nd best Brosnan Bond

    by drath

People are way too hard on Die Another Day, probably mostly because it's the last one they remember that relied so much on trick cars and gadgets. Even with it's flaws, I liked it a hell of a lot more than Tomorrow Never Dies and World is Not Enough. Goldeneye was the least gadget-crazy of the Brosnan Bond movies though, and none of them were what I consider great Bond either, but Die Another Day had the best pacing of the four for my money, plus it had my favorite villain of the four in Toby Stephens as Graves--who I totally didn't expect to be any good. I'd have loved Sean Bean more if they'd not turned him into a typical Bond villain by the end. Debates over the best Bond movie and Bond actor are just narcissism. We don't all like the same things, it doesn't work to try and force your preferences on others. The only truth here is everyone likes something different. Putin...I mean, Daniel Craig has an intensity that works good for Bond, but I don't think he's that much closer to Fleming's Bond than Brosnan or the others. Actually Roger Moore was probably the closest to what Fleming had in mind, yet he rarely gets praised as the best Bond. In the end who even cares? The movies aren't the books, and I doubt I'd enjoy seeing movies that are just like those books now anyway. My favorite Bond movies are From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Living Daylights, and Casino Royale, and I'm not surprised those titles keep showing up in lists of favorites. But I'll always have a warm place in my heart for Octopussy, You Only Live Twice, Spy Who Loved Me, Die Another Day, and even A View to a Kill. And of course all the Connery movies are entertaining, even if there are some turkeys like Diamonds are Forever and Never Say Never Again (yes I know, it's not truly part of the series and just remakes Thunderball, but dangit, Fatima Blush was the best Bond villainess ever, even better than Xenia Onatopp).

Taking all the good bits out of the movie. again i have no idea. but anything is possible. If and this is a big if they re-edited before putting the movie into cinemas. Why? needs some investigating.
