GRAN TORINO is Clint Eastwood as an Archie Bunker You Do Not F^{k With!!!

Published at:  Oct 24, 2008 2:54:27 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... GRAN TORINO was once thought to be a story about an elderly Dirty Harry, well... turned out that wasn't accurate. Instead, it's about a new character that Clint is playing. About a grizzled, angry, pissed off at the world, elderly man living alone in a house... his kids trying to get him to move to a home... foreigners moving next door... and well... He's all kinds of angry - and he's armed. In an odd way this reminds me of HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, but it's CLINT EASTWOOD WITH A SHOTGUN! Holy fuck that's scary! Check out the trailer below!

filming that flick out here in the beautiful Detroit area ... so the local press has been following the movie pretty closely. It sounds like it's got a lot of potential, and props to Client for getting the feel right by shooting a flick about a retired auto plant worker with a car fixation actually in Detroit (and get set for a bunch of other Detroit based movies soon, thanks to our governor rolling out some egregious tax incentives for studios to start shooting here)

How can one man be quite so cool and tough over 4 decades. Just for arguments sake, how many other people in the movies can boast such an impressive body of work over the years? Sure, he's had his flops, but its hard to think of someone who's had quite so many iconic roles and also furthered their career as a director at a level that Eastwood has.

Clint : One of the good guys

    by mr dark

This looks great.. I will be seeing this when it opens..
I have a good Clint story..
When Kellys Hero's came out it premiered at The Parkway theater in Las Vegas..I knew a couple of the girls who worked there and they let me and a couple of buddies into the showing for free.
We wanted to see who would show up for the film and I was surprised but the theater was only about half full..We waited in the front row and in walks Clint, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland , and Telly Savales..
Now here we are about 17 years old and waiting for Rickles to start to rip into the audience but he and Eastwood said a few words about the film and then he and Don Rickles start to walk back to the seats in the rear of the theater. Don Rickles and Clint come over to us and stop and tell us that we shouldn't sit so close to the screen as it will hurt our eyes and that moving back a little will give us a better film experience.
Now here's two guys that cared that we got to see this film and enjoy it more by not sitting so close to the screen..I will always remember that. I saw every Eastwood film thereafter and really bacame a film geek around that time..This guy is a class act all the way around..

    by dracula_wants_the_amulet

Clint doesn't smoke. What's up with that voice. Sounds acted. Film looks like it's fun. the Thugs look weak as fuck though. We all know how these films end. The disgrunted forced to be a hero guy dies near the end and saves the person/ family in trouble and the community finally stands up for itself and fights the bad guys. Oh yeah and one of the bad dudes goes good. Still it's Eastwood, so my tickets already bought!!!!

    Fucking Old Batman Is Right!

    by snakesonabicycle

Looks just like Miller's old Batman when he fought Supes. And he's still got some muscle mass. Eastwood's aging like Newman; his whole face just keeps getting tighter. And now with those emerging liver spots and reddening of his cataracts he looks even scarier with a shotgun. However my enthusiasm would've went through the roof (for let's be honest, what looks like a small underwhelming film) if Hobo Eastwood woulda burned those gifts the Chinese neighbors left on his door for helping. I hope this guy is just as angry, even after his cliched redemption scene, and before he almost certainly dies. I want this movie to have balls. I want Hobo Eastwood to mumble some racial slur with his final breath. If he cries in this movie I will burn the theatre I see it in DOWN.

The '70s gave us Dirty Harry.

Eastwood's conservative too - supports McCain in this election and everything. What kicks ass about him is that he's one of the few filmmakers/actors that will defy his conservative beliefs in service of a story. The ending of Million Dollar Baby is a perfect example of this (SPOILER). He caught a LOT of shit from conservative talking heads who think euthanasia is wrong, and his response was essentially "I may not believe in it, but I'm not going to change a perfectly good ending just because it makes me personally uncomfortable."My point is this: personal politics don't apply in a film like this, because I guarantee that Clint Eastwood doesn't give half a shit about them when it comes to movies. He tells stories, period.

Her family were portrayed as unsympathetic. that left a really sour taste in my mouth. then there was the scene right at the very end where there are no other hospital employees around. so clint gets in unplugs maggies life support machine and walks out. odd.

get plaudits from Richard Burton. Burton was asked what it was like to work with Clint. Burton was dismissive at first, but realised clints greatness when he saw what he did with the small amount of lines that were given to him. Burton said that unlike other Hollywood stars he found CLint Eastwood to be really gracious. As did william goldman. Clint doesnt audition actors. He simply pulls out a list of actors from his desk from his non descript office. and his casting agents ring the actors on the list. and that is it.

RE: Eastwood's Voice in "The Dark Knight"

    by jorson28

Actually, I think Aaron Eckhart's voice after becoming Two-Face sounds the most like Clint Eastwood's, especially in the first hospital scene and especially since you see lots of teeth, but the mouth itself barely moves, though in this case I'd imagine that's mostly because it can't move much. Anyhow, just saying, if you want to look for Eastwood's voice coming from a different actor in the new Batman film, I think it's hands-down from Two-Face, particularly when Gordon says he's sorry and Two-Face grunts, "No! No you're not. Not yet..."

    Hey Assholes

    by toxicbuddha

Just because a movie has ethnically diverse actors doing bad things that doesn't make it racist. And claiming you are trying to point out how overly sensitive others are just shows off what a pissed of small minded white boy YOU are. (ESPECIALLY when no one to this point has posted a talkback even remotely suggesting the film is biased). There are Asian gangs in this world. Some Black guys in Detroit are bad people. Old White dudes are sometimes prejudiced. Just becoz some assholes cry racism doesn't mean you have to justify them by even responding. Do urselves a favor and only speak of Spike Lee when he makes a good movie. You would be amazed how much time it saves.

Clint in Millers Dark knight returns has been a dream of minr for over a decade.

that story was picked up before this site ran into to the toilet. I think If i am not mistaken it surfaced around the time that eastwood went to Cannes film festival. Eastwood shot the story down. saying no more dirty harrys. They were planning to remake them. I can imagine the response. "over my dead body." that is that. move on. Clint did say something about a series of videogames. You cant make them without him.

This movie looks fuckin' HARDCORE. The whiny diaper-needs-to-be-changed snotnosed children on the IMDb are mocking this film and it's star (CLINT EASTWOOD) 'cause he's too old. Fuck 'em. As far as I'm concerned Clint is God, albeit with a bigger dick.

    Looks a winner from here. . .

    by chief redcock

. . .these recent films of Clint's (Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, now this) seem to have a great formal symmetry to them. You know this won't just be another revenge/action type deal. . . it will have character development, story arcs, a fulfilling climax, the whole deal. He really has become quite a storyteller. In interviews and such, he makes his views, ideas, and politics sound awfully one note, but his films are always a LOT more complicated. . . Unforgiven is practically postmodern in its reassessment of the American western. My prediction is that this and Changeling will both be A pictures.

    "foreigners moving next door"

    by jmn

Yeah, because all Asian people are foreigners? WTF Harry, do you call your wife a foreigner too? Those slant eyed kids in the trailer didn't "speakie Engrish with any chinky-assed accent," did they? I'm not sure if I care to watch another "white man saves a bunch of minority 'foreigners,'" but it seems like at least there are some three dimensional Asian characters in this movie. So I'm giving this film the benefit of the doubt.

    by chuckimania

Seriously, it makes my dick limp knowing that a handful with you would rather bitch about Harry referring to Walt's gun as being a shotgun, or the Asian people next door being citizens. Instead of recognizing a joke (which wasn't hard to do in this case), and watching an amazing trailer a select few of you would rather tackle the insignificant in order to impress your internet pals. Love the trailer, will be there opening night. Thanks for posting this Harry.

I believe his debut was Dirty Harry, no not the whole movie. During the suicide jumper scene the director took ill, and Clint too over. I think this happened before Misty, but I could be wrong. Too tired to hit IMDB at the moment.

Eastwood did fill in direct those scenes in "Dirty Harry," but that wasn't his first directorial effort. "Play Misty for Me" came out a few months earlier and, in fact, there's a scene in "Dirty Harry" where he walks past a theater showing "Misty."

    by bones

I don't really have a desire to see this...and I don't know why. Maybe it is because it looks like an Urban "Unforgiven" , but you know, with Joss Whedon as a priest instead of Morgan Freeman and a bunch of Korean kids instead of whores...Or maybe it's just that frontier justice isn't as appealing in the Britney Spears/NASCAR/Dubyah USA we live in now...
    Dunno.
Maybe Clint is just f**king old.

    by vern

I'm surprised by how many talkbackers seem to think the movie about him being racist and how that's okay. If you've seen a movie before, or if you've read one sentence about this movie's plot, you know that in addition to being the asskicking Eastwood movie the world demands, it is a story about him learning tolerance through his relationship with his immigrant neighbor. Duh.
This is also pretty standard Eastwood characterization, for example take a look at THE ENFORCER, where he's very chauvinistic but Tyne Daley earns his respect.

    by continentalop

I agree with you that the movie obviously deals with Clint overcoming his racism by befriending his Asian neighbors. However, since this is a Clint Eastwood movie, I bet you it doesn't end with the typical Hollywood action movie ending. Look at his current track record - Clint's movies have progressively gotten darker and more complex over the years.

    Vern and Continentalop are correct

    by grammaton cleric binks

Duh, how can this be a racist movie if Clint defends, befriends, and it looks like maybe even mentors one of the Asians. Anyone watching the whole traile, and think this is racist has their head stuck in their third point of contact.

    by nizzuts

When are they going to make a movie with Clint and Sam Jackson kicking ass together? They should have made Sam Jackson his son-in-law in this movie and then have to the two of them kick the asian gang's ass while trading angry one-liners and staring down punks. That would kick ass!

Ah that's one thing about our Harry, doesn't play any favorites! Harry hates everybody: Limeys, Micks, Hebes, Fat Dagos, Niggers, Honkies, Chinks, you name it.
Gonzales: How does he feel about Mexicans?
    De Georgio: Ask him.
    Harry Callahan: Especially Spics.
