Jackman As Antony Opposite Zeta-Jones In Soderbergh’s 3D Rock Musical CLEOPATRA??
I am – Hercules!!
The reason Southern California’s Century City exists is because 20th Century Fox lost a fortune on its Elizabeth Taylor “Cleopatra” and had to sell most of its famed backlot to real estate developers.
Now Steven Soderbergh, the fellow behind all those “Ocean’s” movies, wants to retell the Cleopatra story with "Chicago's" Catherine Zeta-Jones, "Viva Laughlin's" Hugh Jackman (as Marc Antony), and a bunch of electric guitars.
Who will give his voice unto Caesar? Michael Douglas? George Clooney? Tim Curry?
Guided By Voices wrote the music for the project:
Read all of Variety’s story on the matter here.
Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem ...
Blood and destruction, because of one man!!

Great Name!
-
So sayeth Fred
-
best idea ever
-
Soderburgh has had a pretty busy career. He has never really stopped working. It is a shame to suggest he is the Oceans guy.
-
I didn't see Robert Pollard's name anywhere in that Variety story, but if they're saying the music is by GBV, he has to be involved. And that's all the reason I need to get excited for this.
-
What next, the musical Ma and Pa Kettle? (Sorry couldn't resist).
-
can't wait!
-
Jesus.
-
Now I look dumb. Thanks a lot.
-
Sounds crazy. But... I'll see anything 3D.
-
This is very strange, as GBV effectively ceased to exist on January 1, 2005 after their goodbye show. With Bob Pollard writing the music and Jim Greer -- an ex-Spin writer, GBV biographer, one-time bassist for GBV and former Kim Deal squeeze -- penning the script, this sounds like one weird movie.

So this ISN'T the "Onion?" And wasn't Cleopatra of a darker skinned complexion?
-
Still, this is the oddest news I've heard in some time.
-
as long as we're doing this up bat shit crazy style...
and who are you all kidding. if you're real film fans, you'll see anything Soderbergh does. he has a permanent blank check in my book. hard to argue anyone making movies today has more pure talent than him...
-
Because GBV is no more. Remember?! I attended one of the last shows. You bummed a cigarette from one of my friends and shared Miller Lites with those of us at the foot of the stage. Besides, what of your great Boston Spaceships, Bob?! What about them?
Such odd news...and so not GBV.
-
enough so that it might just work.
-
Really?
Really?

what happened with that? I wanna seeee !

For a guy pushing.. what? 51? His new music sounds young, fresh, unique.
-
I did reply to your reply and so-on about Blood Meridian in whatever the hell that original thread was... just so you know...
-
3d animated, or 3d as in live-action stereoscopic? Or both 3d animated AND stereoscopic?
-
And not in a good way.

Soderbergh can do whatever he likes as far as I'm concerned.
by Knuckleduster
Love his movies. Even his failures are worth watching.
Yep, I'm one of those people who thought his Solaris was brilliant.
-
I mean, if you want to go OVER THE TOP and produce a fucking 3D rock opera Cleopatra, you go OVER. THE. FUCKING. TOP! Paul Williams is your man. He's not doing ANYTHING. Call him before he dies.
-
One of my favourites :)
-
Jesus. Can't believe I listened to that shit. Great guitarist NOT! Never mind all the other reasons this is a bad idea - 2 hours of that banal fucking music? I'd rather suck razor blades.
-
"Walk Like An Egyptian".

Boy, we asked for something original out of Hollywood
by Shut the Fuck up Donny
and we got it. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
However, I'm still intrigued.
-
He certainly ain't makin' studio movies. GBV is brilliant though, and Jackman hasn't made TOO many mis-steps. Viva Laughlin and Deception being the only things I can think of right now (?)
-
I think I still want to wait for Universal to wise up and make another "Van Helsing". Or better yet, get their theatricals to do a musical version of that movie. :D (Hey, I can dream, right?)
-
He's recently promoting a musical version of "Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas" in Conneticut, and he's still trying to get a stage version of POTP off the ground as well as being involved with the new Muppet TV movie.
-
Yeah, sure, he's doing something. But you know he's perfect for this. Unless you get Emerson Lake and Palmer to do a Karn Evil 9 / Tarkus prog rock extravaganza. This project must be as ridiculously over the freaking top as possible, thus Paul Williams came to mind.
-
Don't need to re-imagine or re-boot. "Ape has killed Ape!" "Aldo has murdered an ape child!" "You murdered my son!!!"
-
I'm saying it now, and I'll say it again. And chunker: No. No, she wasn't. Cleopatra was a Ptolemy, making her 100% Greek, which means that she would have a light olive complexion, just like CZJ.
-
a demanding queen married to ancient relic. or when her career dries up Catherine could make a film called I married a mummy. only after the cameras stop rolling she gets to go home to the mum..or I mean Micheal.
-
Should be Tim Curry or Anthony Stewart Head...
-
Oh please. I can't believe you idiots buy into the hype behind Guided By Voices. I grew up in Dayton Ohio and always knew them for the joke they are, it's time the rest of the world sees it too. For those not in the know, here's the big concept. Their singer, does an English accent while singing. Ta-dah! I give you guided by Voices. And since he's always so f-ed up on stage from the alcohol, they've rightfully earned the name Guided By Vodka. I had a friend make me sit through one of their concerts, it was torture. So, why is it that GBV is going to be inflicted upon your ears? Kim Deal of Pixies fame, and also from Dayton wanted to support the local scene, which there is none. So she had her "Spin" mag author hear them. If you've ever read the crap in Spin, you will understand why he enjoyed them, and somehow they got a small following. They still suck. Their big contribution to music is a song you've never heard called "I am a Scientist." which could have been written by the 12 year old in the garage next door, and played much better as well. Every now and then a band or artist pops up and has small success when the world should really just tell them no. As a nation we said no to Sanjaya, we said no to Kelly Osbourne, do your nation, no the world proud, and say no to Guided By Vodka!
-
I'm all hot and bothered for Repo! right now, and this news just makes me unbelievably happy. I love rock musicals... and a period piece Rock Musical... fuck yeah, I'm sold.
-
Have people learned nothing from Starlight Express?
But seriously, period rock operas can be great. If not atleast quite funny.
-
WRONG!!!
And if you actually think that Spin magazine had anything to do with GBV (or Pollard's) following...
...you're double WRONG!!!
-
And he's just a little envious of this CLEOPATRA concept.
-
making this movie will only prove my theory that movies suck nowadays. im curious to see this trainwreck.
-
...That Jackman started in musical theatre before he made the transition to the big screen? Curly in Oklahoma... Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz... Singing is what he does - He'd eat this role for breakfast!
