Additional BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Bits of Information!!!

Published at:  Oct 22, 2008 7:19:00 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - I had sent Tim League off to the Island chain of Ponga to meditate upon the brilliance that will be BUTT-NUMB-A-THON X - that's Roman for 10, he tells me and not the rating for the festival... though, you never know.

Anyway, Tim returned late Monday, so he and I met here at Geek Headquarters to discuss many BNAT things. First on our list was the location. You may have noticed in the previous post - BNAT 10 Applications Announcement - that I did not say where it would take place. This year, due to some of the hijinks we have planned, it was decided that the ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE on SOUTH LAMAR would be the best location. That's the same world renowned theater that we host FANTASTIC FEST at, along with many of our fantastic year round events. The theater is slightly larger, to fit more of you good folks - and well - for secret reasons - it had to be there. You'll see.

Also - if you are applying with additional people - they must all fill out applications as well. So get on your guests, friends, spouses to fill out everything at THIS LOCATION!!! Be sure to read all the instructions - from the top of the page down - before loading your pictures - and good look, we've been having tons of applications coming in and some hilarious pictures - the Yearbooks are going to really be aces this year!

ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DUE - One Week From Tonight - OCTOBER 29th - 11:59pm (Central Standard Time)

Ok?

Groovy. Some very cool stuff is in the works, just wait till you get a load of it all!

We are still working out photo details here, but they should be great.

This is great news, too. I would LOVE to share the love of BNAT with even more film/movie/flick geeks.

I will also be working diligently this weekend on BNAT9 Retrospective. I usually have it done by now, but it seems that the evensmallerdemon takes a bit higher priority over most of my other projects.

    question

    by nora inu

I'm curious about something. Have any of you applied and been accepted to several BNAT's but don't know Harry or anyone associated with AICN on a personal level? I was at BNAT 6 which was the first time i applied and I've applied every year but one since then but never gotten accepted again. Yet I remember meeting or hearing of people that have been to many of them. I'm not pissed about this or anything, that's perfectly fine that he brings his buddies in every year, it's his B-day afterall and its awesome that he tries to make sure lots of people who've never experienced it before get in... i'm simply curious if someone has randomly managed to get in many times (stand by doesn't count) and if so, what is your secret? i hope to make it back this year!

Every year - there's about 35-40% of the audience that's never been before. BNAT is a community that continues to grow. BNAT 10 is the end of a cycle - the 'first age' of BNAT so to speak. There are folks that have traveled great distances, yearly, to attend- and have attended all of them. These are folks that I really don't know. I know their faces, I've heard stories of them, but they're good people. Everyone that gets in or tries to - are good people.

The new folks that get in tend to somehow seem interesting - via their application. They become someone that I think would be nice to add to the group. I always work to discern people that really want to be a part of an experience, instead of just seeing something specific. Probably the most important question towards all of this is the which 3 vintage and future films question. It reveals a lot about a person. Sometimes I let the person in with marginal knowledge or depth of film in, but who needs something to fire their passion. People who will take more from the vintage films, than they'd ever expect.

Through the BNAT application process, I get to know people a bit, if they let me. Often times at BNAT, I surprise people by knowing their names and the details from their applications - cuz ultimately these are the people I want at this celebration. My favorite day of the year. Hopefully I'll see some of you again or for the first time.

I appreciate your response. BNAT is a truly wondrous experience. In addition to BNAT 6 I also was lucky enough to make it down to Half ass a thon so i certainly don't believe I have been given the shaft by any stretch. It's funny that you mention giving people who may have fairly marginal film knowledge a crack at BNAT. That was me back in '04 at BNAT 6. I had really just started to delve completely into geekdom in general and movies of all genres/eras in particular. that fall leading up to that first bnat (i'd only discovered AICN maybe a year or so before) was a time of discovery. I'd just started a netflix subscription and began my quest to every oscar best picture winner. This spiraled out to something I never imagined. a hundred years of cinema to discover and enjoy. i'm starting to sound like a turner classic infomercial, excuse me. but BNAT 6 was a monumental event to me and particular at that time, i was having a shitty year. that year i also discovered kurusawa whose excellent noirish movie Stray Dog supplies my handle via its japanese name. anyhow, BNAT is awesome, everyone apply.

    by master bitchfist

i have my picture done, but i haven't uploaded it yet because I don't know how lengthy the application is. is it the kind of thing one could do in 20 mins? or is it more of a few hours writing kind of thing? (i know its subjective to the writer) my real question is just whether or not one can go back to the website at a later time, having time to think about an answer or something. how is it set up?

I haven't submitted my app yet, but from what I've read in the first TB, you have to submit everything at once. Once it's submitted, it's in; you can't go back and edit. That said, it'll probably take you more than a few minutes, but certainly not several hours.

    by rustle

This is great news. If it's in the largest theatre, it will hold even more than the old downtown location. I think it's a better place for the event, and anything that allows more of us to attend is a good thing. My application will be in this weekend.

    by 433

There are usually breaks between films, sometimes as much as 20 minutes, but occasionally movies roll right into each other, the most awesome of which was ROCK ALL NIGHT leading directly into the original KING KONG.

As for food, you can order the awesome Alamo Drafthouse food (delivered right to your seat!) at any time during the show, up until about 1 or 2 AM, after which they just have appetizers until breakfast.

Great idea. BNAT should expand to every English speaking country on the planet. They could hold 'em at the same time with different AICN staffers in each country, or Harry could go to 1 a month throughout the year. Get bigger venues, go for the o2 arena in London. Expand it Harry, if it is a popular as I suspect you could make a fortune (either for yourself or some well deserving charity). I am sure a huge film fan like yourself could have a blast planning and touring a geek festival, what a way to make a living. 2nd thoughts, I am going off to register that idea in every English speaking country and get the rights to it.....

    BNAT?

    by superjim

Does Harry usually screen any blockbusters from the summer ahead at BNAT? If so, anyone care to speculate what he might show at BNAT X? Terminator? Potter? Or are they usually just film geek films that I will never hear of away from this site?
The reason I ask is that I am a mainstream movie fan, my film education is fairly limited. I cannot and do not get excited about the old/obscure titles a lot of BNAT attendees go crazy over but may be jealous that I cannot go if there are some films from the future being screened.

It's a mix of films... some new (last year we saw "Sweeney Todd," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Mongol," "Trick 'r Treat," and "The Poughkeepsie Tapes"), some vintage ("Lonely Are The Brave" and "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" were a couple of those... great stuff!), some just hands-down insane (I'm looking at you "Farewell, Uncle Tom").Not to discourage you, as BNAT is awesome, but if you "don't get excited about the old/obscure titles," you'll spend at least half of BNAT wishing you were somewhere else. 24 hours is a LONG TIME if you're just holding out for the not-yet-released blockbusters. For us geeks who love the old/new/weird -- all of it! -- there's nothing better.

    longest-out movie...

    by grendy

...was actually The Decent, 433. It came out in August the following year. And this is after both Father Geek (and a few others) leaving for the lobby from the claustrophobia and Vegas yelling like a scared cheerleader in one part. Shoot man, that was the best part, Vegas' embarrassed face afterwords. Though, Trick 'r' Treat would have been 10 months out, if some fools had gotten off their asses and put this one out this season. It was really quite good and fun. I mean, Paquin's a hit in True Blood, she's got a whole new audience waiting to see her in more stuff. I applied on Saturday, and hope to heck I get in!

    by lissa-triana

The Decent freaked me out. I had never heard anything about the movie and when the cave dwellers showed up (unexpectedly I thought) I freaked out ("What is that? What... OMG! It's Gollum!"). I was already suffering from claustrophobia before that.
