Someone's Been Offered The Lead In THOR & Turned It Down!!
Merrick here...
During a recent discussion about QUANTUM OF SOLACE, IESB spoke to Daniel Craig about being on the short list of actors to play the title character in THOR.
Craig said yes they [Marvel] did approach him but he turned it down.
...says THIS PIECE at IESB, which goes on to reveal more details about Craig's decision.
To the best of our knowledge, no director has been officially selected for THOR, although Kenneth Branagh is known to be attached & has evidently been reworking his schedule to accommodate this project.

love craig as bond. thor not so much.
-
At least they're taking the part serious. Thor always screamed goofy to me. Really goofy.
-
He'd be good. Although I'd prefer him for Oliver Queen/Green Arrow.
-
You knows it.
-
A usual rule in acting is that you adopt only one mainstream character at a time. The only exception has been Harrison Ford in SW and IJ.
-
Take back what you said about Thor!
-
Fucking awful choice.
-
Voila. Thor. Time to play The Gaaaaame!!!
-
should play Thor!
-
Kevin McKidd is amazing, and has kind of a Craig look.
-
He just does not seem like thor to me.
-
Would be cool but there going to need someone A List it is going to be hard enough to sell this movie to regular people with out one.
-
Johnny Depp as Loki (c'mon, it would work), Brian Cox as Odin, and Brad Pitt in a cameo as Balder (isn't Balder supposed to be ridiculously handsome?)
Viggo as Green Arrow? Brilliant, IMHO. He even has similar politics. -
I think I'd prefer to see Kevin McKidd as Loki.
-
...methinks yon noble Bond portrayer hast made a wise choice, anon.
-
and not professional wrestlers.
-
Do it the way Kirby would - a retelling of the mythology. Think Tolkien, not Superman. And none of the "forsooth" shit.
-
Hey, Loki, say hey to your mother for me.
-
...if he wasn't already Spock. I know Depp is a longshot, but Thor needs a really charismatic villain to work. If not Depp, Daniel Day Lewis or even Branagh himself (although he's physically not right at all).
-
Ohhh, they want actors. I think an all ex-NFL player cast would rock. Ditka for Odin!!!!
-
It'd be like Knight's Tale, he can play a big strong ox.
-
What's up beeetches ?!? Actually, Kevin McKidd is inspired ... I just don't know if he brings enough gravitas. Part of what made his Titus Pullo so good was what a good natured, amiable psycho he was.
-
Lucius Vorenus!!!!!!!!
-
wrong casting choice there.....
-
I can't believe that an AICN article about casting in a superhero movie did not reference Will Smith. Will Smith would be perfect with long blonde hair.

would have been perfect...but they waited too damn long to make the movie.

And Thor is gay as fuck

Will Smith for Thor!

He's done fuck-all and has achieved fuck-all. WHY the Feck is Kenneth Bran Flakes doing this? Why!!??!?!?!?!

As the thing that ate Thor. Was there a time when he was considered a "hunk"? Thats just funny.

That would be awesome.

Clancy Brown as THOR...kidding, maybe 15 years ago but not now...too old.
-
And not in a "Super Hero" way. This years episodes of L&O C:I he wore the same vertical striped shirt and big boy jacket to try to hide the fact he had put on about 60+lbs. He made his Gomer Pyle character in FMJ look TINY. I thought it was funny that all year this season, he never wore a tie or a suit for that matter. Same dark striped vertical shirt, same big as fuck jacket. Saw him in The Cell last night, and he surprised me at his leanness even 8 years ago. Time to call Jenny, Vince!

He's 5'10, for gosh sake. Thor needs to be at least 6'4 or 6'5. Has to be an unknown/former athlete to pull off. Perhaps Craig was cast to play Dr. Blake, and they'd CGI Thor? Hard to character to bring to screen, to be sure.
-
And really, casting Craig as Thor? Really?
-
That should play Thor. He's got everything, the chops, the look and I really hope its all fantasy until The Avengers.

Awesome clip.

that coulda been fuckin badass. he was a great choice. next up...Brad Pitt as seen in Troy with a beard? any takers?

I think they're at least thinking on the right track--
by the reluctant austinite
Other than Dr. Strange, Thor has got to be Marvel's toughest egg to crack as far as making a big budget mainstream film goes. I've always been at a loss for good casting. You don't want a huge bodybuilder, you want a good actor. Daniel Craig is the right way of thinking about the part; someone who'll give a sense of realism to a part that could very easily look really silly. Kenneth Branagh is also a great choice for director; someone who can handle the grandiose Shakespearian operatic nature of the character and his world. The thing I'm most curious to see play out is how the film maker's are going handle it when Thor is plucked from Asgard and put into the modern world with "The Avengers." That's a potential train wreck waiting to happen. It'd be a fun mental production challenge to try and visualize that and sell it.
-
Wait, what are we playing here?

He's charismatic, stoic, conflicted, he would be excellent as THOR.

Shaq as Thor...Beetlejuice (from Howard Stern) as Mjolnir
by cletus van damme
Crayzee stoopit
-
but he's not got the stature for Thor. Interesting choice tho. Don't know any other big blonde brits. Hehehe. Big blondes tits... *ahem*
-
I would gladly shell out 10 bucks a ticket to see Shaq in a winged helmet swinging Beetlejuice around at giant poorly rendered CGI two-headed hounds.
-
not much of a name but a little. Has the look in my mind. And with Star Trek this summer could help him get more "big" work.
-
Anyone?
-
Yes, he could totally pull of both Blake (Dan Vasser) and Thor (Lucius Vorenus). He's got the authority and can be scary. He would be great as the unknown factor in the Avengers who would fuck shit up.
-
Thor is goofy. Especially when you consider his presence in the "real world". However, if they're shooting for a recognizable star like Craig, that's as good a start as any. In this case, I think Craig made the right choice.Kevin McKidd - no doubt he would make a perfect choice for Thor. However, when he was working on JOURNEYMAN, I distinctly remember reading somewhere that he had already been contacted about a role in THOR. It did not appear at that time that he was being considered for the lead. He seemed to insinuate that they were thinking of him for Loki. Make of that what you willFinally, Marvel needs to hire the casting director(s) from THE 13TH WARRIOR. Some of the best Norse-inspired character design can be found in that movie. They could definitely populate Asgard with some tough looking dudes.
-
You just know someone, somewhere in Los Angeles has uttered these words in the last few weeks. They probably work at Fox so we're alright.
-
I guarantee you that Craig will End Up regretting that decision. I think he's terrible for the part mind you, but he will regret it for sure.
-
Yeah.
-
I think I'd regret seeing this movie at all. Thor, to me, seems pretty lame.
-
Golden Compass, The Body Snatchers anyone?
He's made a big mistake here. This would have given him a financial hit outside of James Bond.
-
is and always will be Thor in my book. Plus, "no one leaves here without playin' the blues!"
-
Does Santa Barbara count for the greater LA area? Because I uttered those words just this morning.
-
Iron Man was a shot in the dark that happened to work really well. Thor is a great comic book hero, but on the big screen it is going to be a disaster!!
-
I am very glad he turned it down.
Thor needs to be very tall and of impressive stature.
Daniel Craig is in very good shape but not Thor shape.
So I am glad he had the presence of mind to say "No."
The best guy I've seen so far is the big blond guy from the 13th Warrior, but he's too old for the role now. How unfortunate, he would have been perfect. -
...of RDJ. If there was none of that wit involved, the movie would have fallen flat on his face.
-
I like Craig, but he's no son of Odin.
-
I'd also add a vote for Paul Bettany as Loki. Watch "A Knight's Tale" for the perfect mix of charisma and mischeviousness. . . he could be a scene stealer.
-
Johnny Depp *is* Thor, just as he's *been* every other role he's ever played.
-
Does anyone else's virus protection pop up on the IESB link?
-
"I can't do anything right. I need help. They all hate me now, Joker. Even you."
-
Gerard Butler He's a bit of a snob but If Kenneth attached he'd probably do it.
-
Maybe Craig was to be Loki
-
is Thor really popular enough to make a feature length, high-budget film???...and succeed??? if i were a movie studio i would approach this with a modest budget...nothing over 50 million and do their damndest to find a bright up-and-coming actor to play Thor and fill the supporting roles with more well known actors and actresses or they are just ASKING for a problem. the first X-Men film had a modest budget given the material (75 million i believe) and relatively low-key actors at the time...and it was a BIG hit.
-
thats a seriously good call on loki. hed be perfect
-
i don't work in a movie studio...so what the fuck do i know???...but if i were the studio backing this...i'd be caaaaareful, or end up with something like Daredevil.
-
I'm so thor, I could hardly pith thith morning! I'm sure some of you know that punchline. I couldn't resist.
Branagh's direction could be excellent if he keeps it in line with his other work. He could really give it the "mythic" feel that I would love to see. -
He is my choice for Thor. I also want Tim Story to direct it.
-
Then CGI his Thor form. .> And put flaming nipples on his black leather costume.

There's no Double Duty in the Comic-movieverse
-
You see this guy lately? Carrot Top should be Thor. That red haired prick!
-
Trust me, sign the guy for like 3 pictures and let the dude milk it. No one in Hollywood actor wise, that is a "name" actor has the physique to play Thor.
www.myspace.com/jerryhorror -
He's due a comeback.
-
The dude from that babysitting movie she did, back in the day. He played "Thor"...bring him outta retirement. He was tops. Him or The Rock in a blonde wig ;)
-
perfect for the role, not a serious actor and HUGELY built.
-
Dolph Lundgren. Sven-Oli Thorson as Odin and Stellan Skarsgard as Loki. They'll all be cheap as chips now, so you can put the budget into Valhalla! And Branagh? I say thee nay! That is all.
-
How's he gonna carry Thor? Besides, a f-ing viking with a hammer and metal hair ... seriously? You think kids are gonna go see this? I cry foul to the studio that greenlighted this. It was a wack comic and it'll be a wack movie.
-
FUCK YEAH but only if this made him a star and not ruin his career the dude was fuckin awsome in Trainspotting and to see him in Rome is just joy as he nails that role like a sex starved porn star let loose with a pocket full of Viagra into a brothel.
-
Give Mariusz Pudzianowsky something to do. PLEASE! That is all.
-
A re-imagining of the character.
Thor: "Tony Stark? I'm Thor, I want to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative."
Tony Stark: "Funny, he doesn't look Norse."
-
They should probably not hire someone with such a STRONG Eastern European accent. Maybe one of those Viking strongmen, though...and MAYBE Triple H, he is a farily articulate guy who might be able to pull it off. Can you imagine Branaugh directing that guy?
-
...could be, UM... a MUTE viking? Come on, he'd be cinema fried-gold! That is all!
-
and his Da should be his Da in it
-
The script was a polished turd so I walked. I need a better 'vehicle' to start my career.
-
with his long blond tresses, olde english, and blue tights. I'd prefer red-haired, bearded, burly transvetite alcoholic Thor with trouble holding his temper. Charles Bronson would have been perfect.

Daneil Craig would have been a great choice...................
by crackerfarmboy
It's a shame that he turned it down. I'm shocked he did with Branagh attached and the script being so well liked. It sounds like it will be a classy affair, just the kind of film that would have suited Craig well. Nuts!
-
Just saying.
-
Cause it hurts....
-
Karl Urban would be excellent in this role. Along with the Hulk, Thor is IMO one of the greatest characters of all time. The people who say he's not enough of a star attraction are blinding themselves to the entertainment value of this mythology. Thor is both royalty and a deity, his ego fed by lifetimes of praise. Whoever plays him will have to walk that fine line of being the noblest of heroes, and a bit of an ass, like Downey did as Shellhead. Like any fanboy, I'm both excited and cautiously optimistic (thanks to Iron Man)that Marvel is finally getting down to the business of creating a cohesive movie universe. If the story is treated properly, this could be a massive hit. And the resulting Avengers film could be the Lord of the Rings of superhero movies. I confess, the they're a sentimental favorite of mine. It was the first comic I owned. I admit, casting something like this is a challenge. Putting the right actor in the role of Loki is crucial, too. At least in comics continuity, he's the whole reason the Avengers come into being. Johnny Depp is the best suggestion I've heard so far, but they may have to go for somebody who's not a household name.
-
Remember him, from Die Hard and The Money Pit? He died some time back, but he looked like Thor. Oh well.
-
approach an anglosaxon midget to play the norse fucking god of thunder!

Maybe they should treat it like a Conan film, so we can avoid a Daredevil-level disaster of a film. Peace, bro.

Logan, perhaps if they wanna show Thor's berserker side, yeah. With the abscence of strong language (til he gets to Midgard) or nudity, it could have some graphic scenes of Thor goin' upside the heads of trolls and frost giants.
-
. . . maybe Clive Owen should take the job. Hehehe.
-
heh heh, I have a big hammer, heh heh. Thou either with me, or against me. heh heh.
-
If he did it he would get the slightly silly tone of the dialogue and hit it out of the park. His shagging scene in Rome Series 2 was totally fucking ridiculous - hilarious - should have won a razzie. Ace actor though.
-
And Brian Cox for Odin - keep it Scottish eh?
-
Remember people said the same thing about IronMan
-
Had the best fucking Thor voice. Film is fucking awesome too. And Russel Crowe would make a good Thor. Yeah he is short but so was Arnie.
-
first off- thor could make a great movie in the right hands. it could be a mix of lord of the rings and iron man. they will probably go for the ultimates look- which means you dont need a heavily muscled guy. i hate to say it- but brad pitt has the right look (god i said it)... there are plenty of others out there but daniel craig?? HAHAHA that is the dumbest casting i have ever heard. thor is supposed to be a good looking, big guy. craig is small and ugly. i digress. thor would probably only be done justice in the hands of somebody like del toro or peter jackson- they have vision. branaugh does not know this character and WILL fuck it up. i will bet he doesnt even end up doing this movie...
-
Bale seems to be the only actor these days trying to be an action star. Seriously, I bet if offered Bale would be Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Cap America, Ironman, Hulk, Wonder Women and Thor. And would probably do a better job then most.
-
Nathan Jones will either be Thor or Conan.
-
it just depends how its done...
-
It took me a good bit of thinking to come up with a young actor that I think might be able play Thor seriously. I, for one, don't want to see a wrestler play this role. That would doom any chance this project has for success. Charlie Hunnam was the lead hooligan, Pete Dunham, in "Green Street Hooligans," and he was amazing. He had a small part in "Children of Men." Look him up on imdb if you don't know him. He's young enough to play the part for any number of Avengers films, and he kind of reminds me of a Brit Heath Leadger. He's also a semi-unknown, so there's no star baggage. Charlie Hunnam for Thor 2010!
-
Hey, I believe Harry had some influence on the casting of Elijah Wood as Frodo. I'm throwing my hat in the ring for Charlie Hunnam. Let's make a good Thor movie! Who's with me?
-
You mean Heath Ledger 2 right?
-
He is from Newcastle. I could have swore that IMDB said he was from Australia when I looked him up with Sons of Anarchy first came on.
-
I don't like him but Russell Crowe wouldn't be a bad choice for Thor. Plus he will be able to hold his own with RDJ, Edward Norton and Matt Damon (who will be Cap America) for the Avengers movie.
-
He's blonde. He can do long hair. He can act. He has a heart throb movie star factor that would be easy to sell to audiences, and he isn't particularly famous--yet. Plus, he hangs out with Ron Perlman on "Sons of Anarchy." He's got to be cool! I've said my piece. I hope Hollywood is reading this today. Harry, back me up if you think I haven't lost my marbles.
-
Josh Brolin as Captain America.
-
Doesn't have the right shaped head to sport a long flowing mane. Also, I saw the trailer for his new flick Defiance over the weekend... Looks pretty bad. He even gives a Braveheart-esque speech on horseback... In a World War II movie... About Jews fighting back against the Nazis... It was bizarre.

by the reluctant austinite
Hunnam is no boy band actor. Strangely, he and Kevin McKidd were both in "Nicholas Nickleby" together, and I agree with some of the others here that he would also fit the role. He can ran as vice president in my CHARLIE HUNNAM FOR THOR 2010 campaign.
-
Why do people want a kid to play the God of Thunder against RDJ's Iron Man and that drama queen's Hulk? Thor is the youngest Avenger? Kevin McKidd sounds better and better!
-
Good choice. I loved Rome as much as anyone, and McKidd was great in that, but I think he may be too small for Thor.
-
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
-
Yeah, Karl Urban would be cool, but he's already done the long haired fantasy warrior thing in "Pathfinder" (I know, it sucked) and "Lord of the Rings." Brad Pitt did in "Troy." Sean Bean would indeed be an awesome Thor, but he's done it in "Lord of the Rings" too. I do love Sean Bean, though, and would love to see him hit it big as star in a Marvel Comics movie. Shermdawg, you've tempted me. I like the way you think. You know, we could always support Sean for Loki. Hell, Sean Bean basically HAS to be in the Thor movie somewhere! He lives in Asgard, you know.
-
Urban or Bean would be cool. My favourite would be Brad Pitt, but like you say he kinda played that character in Troy. Hell, tell Hunnham to grow a red beard and I'm all for it ;)

And get Ratner on this ASAP. What other choice could there be?

by stereotypical evil archer
That guy is badass.

Not really.
-
Yeah, I should probably watch Sons of Anarchy. But I really hope they dont go the "young Thor" route! Well maybe in this first one, growing up. But they really need an older actor to fit in the Avengers!
Why is Pitt crazy talk? He'd be great! -
Have him fight The Hulk.
-
Yeah, sure. As Thor...wtf? What idiot is casting this? Thor is massive, not a scrawny little shit!
-
What is it, 90210 on motorbikes? No, if they have to go with young Thor, get Alexander Skarsgård and beef him up. Like someone said, then we can get Daddy Stellan S as Odin.
-
He is to small to play Thor. I know it is the IN thing to get some guy who has the cut build and sex apeal. If I had to chose, I would chose the guy who played the Head Viking in "13th Warrior" if anyone remembers who I am talking about. He seemed like a good actor for that role and has the size to pull it off. Unless he is not near as big as he looked in that movie.
-
My favorite Marvel character's punch line.
-
Kevin McKidd would be fantastic in this. He's a great actor. Rome is one of the best TV shows EVER, with him and Ray Stevenson beeing totally awesome. Pullo forever!!! But we know he won't get it cos the studios are idiots. Fucking Daniel Craig. He's shite.

C'mon Marvel, don't fuck this up. You've learned from the painfully miscast mistakes of the past. Don't have another "hot" actor cast as one of your properties. Ofcourse we don't expect you to find a 6'6" actor who's 200+ lbs. o' muscle. But this dude's a god who commands the forces of the storm. I don't know any other way to say it, it has to be someone good looking who can pull off the physicallity of the role. Oh, yeah. And it'd be nice if he could act. Otherwise those scenes he's going to appear in with RDJ (his brother in drinking and wenching) are gonna be awful AWKwaaarrd.
-
He basically played a badass Viking in LotR. He's perfect. Brad Pitt? Interesting choice, but I always thought he'd make a proper Cap. I saw Matt Damon mentioned for the Sentinel of Liberty. He's kind of an intriguing suggestion. After Bourne, I can't deny he could very well do it.

I've wanted to see Josh Holloway in that role for a long time. If he can ditch the Georgia accent, he'd be great.

by orbots commander
I don't know how one adapts Marvel's Mighty Thor to the big screen without it being a big joke. I think one way to cut down on the silliness is to excise the Dr.Blake secret identity stuff. Branagh is better off making it a combination Lord of the Rings (the large canvas mythic epic-ness) crossed with Marvel's Ultimates Thor.
-
Jared Leto. Tried to think of someone for Thor, but have zero interest so came up with Cap.
-
'Verily, thou hast unbeknownst to thine portents... awww HELL no!'

(At least, in Hollywood.) For everyone dismissing actors as being "too small" or "not tall enough", that is child's play for Hollywood now. They made John Rhys-Davies look like a *dwarf* in the middle of crowds. They can adjust the size of any actor they cast as needed, if the actor is good enough to be worth the expense.

Please please please make Golden Compass 2. That world has some really nifty concepts that are just crying to be fleshed out.
-
I've heard people mention that it's good, but I don't know any of the particulars. See, a few years ago I read about Neil Gaiman wanting to do a Thor story for comics. Well, in my fevered little brain, I thought with Neil's recent ventures into screenwriting and his consumate grasp of all things mythical, he could have wrote a killer screenplay. Throw in a good genre director like del Toro or Snyder, and you'd have one hell of picture.*** I try to keep an open mind to other peoples' opinions. I don't always succeed, but I try. It kinda frosts me when these trolls (how apropos!) come here and say this concept is too goofy to fly, or there just isn't enough familiarity with the character to appeal to mass audiences. A thousands-year-old figure of Norse myth versus what? A video game character some neb designed six months ago? For those who would ponder how this project would work, I kindly point out it's all about carefully sustained at-mo-sphere. C'mon, we're big kids here- everybody knows you can do damn near anything with spfx nowadays. But what you do with said effects makes a world of difference. Yeah, it can come off as goofy, or if used judiciosly, can be really keewwlll, mmkay? And, not only do they have the myths to draw upon, but they have about forty frickin' years of Marvel continuity; from Kirby's Journey into Mystery to Walt Simonson's epic juxtaposition of fantasy adventure in modern times. I have yet to read Straczynski's run on Thor, but I hear it's the cat's ass.
-
'Cuz it's too much t'ask to have everything spelled correctly.
-
Just because The Golden Compass wasn't the blockbuster some hoped it would be doesn't mean they cannot adapt The Subtle Knife. It would be a damn shame to waste all that potential.
-
So Daniel's would be good!
-
...and once you see this clip, you will all know the truth. There is only one truth in this world. Only one man knows the truth. Only one man *could* know the truth. Only one man lives and breathes badass. Only one man can truly play THOR because he IS Thor. That man is....TECHNO-VIKING!!!.http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=_1nzEFMjkI4http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=_1nzEFMjkI4TECHNO-VIKING is THOR!!!!
-
He is always the bride's maid, but never the bride. Were they going to give Daniel Craig elevator shoes for the part, or were they just going to cast really short actors to make him look taller? Go with Kevin McKidd as Thor...Aaron Eckhart will play Captain America...
-
Come on, he would be perfect. Hell, he would be perfect for almost every superhero role. I'd reserve him for Dr. Strange

Dr. Strange is something we'll have to ponder on--
by the reluctant austinite
Johnny Depp is the first person that comes to mind that could really knock Dr. Strange out of the park Downey Jr. style. But Depp is either being considered for or cast as every major role that comes along these days. Jim Caviezel would indeed be interesting. Jeremy Irons maybe a bit long in the tooth, but could have been cool. Same for Timothy Dalton. I still say CHARLIE HUNNAM FOR THOR 2010!!!
-
And I think he'd make the character his own a la Downey with Tony Stark.
-
He looked perfectly like Dr. Strange in that movie
-
Too small and ugly. Thor is a norse god. Not a classless thuggish Bond.
-
Talkin' 'bout long hair and crazy cool chainmail. My cat walked on my keyboard.
-
This is a really gay part to cast. They need to offer mucho money.
-
No shirt. No shoes. NO DICE.
-
Could one 'o you butch mofos please explain to me how this particular property is "gay"? Is that gay as in the word homosexuals use to desribe themselves, gay as in the mid-Atlantic usage for lame, or both? And why is it more gay than say, a video game like God of War, or the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia franchises?
-
The release date better be on a Thursday. :)
/Think about it for a minute.... -
No matter what they're making a movie of, the usual contingent of baboons will come out to denounce it.
-
Marvel should hire you for this one. Tell 'em how to do it right! Oh and Straczynski's Thor brought me back to comics.
-
Yeah I said that too. People going "character not well known to make it big". Well, he has his own day in the calendar, every damn week!
-
I'd have to go with Kevin or the Norse/German character from Kingdom of Heaven, which McKidd was in as well. I've been a fan of Thor since Journey into Mystery. I don't want them to mess this up like they did the FF...Doom was my favorite Marvel villain until Fox got a hold of him...ah, well...
-
I didn't see your Thursday comment. Cracks me up that someone else thought of that too!
-
god bless cbs circa 1979
-
Because Favreau did choose Downey Jr. and it was a great choice. Let Branagh choose!
-
I don't want them near someone as great as Thor. McKidd is more of a blue collar guy. Urban was so bad in Pathfinder, that guy is not an actor. And Bana was boring and lifeless in Troy so that's saying a lot. I think Craig just have that mix of grit and look to be Thor. He was pretty damn buff in the first Bond. Also they could give him things to stand on.

Donell Blake. BY MY STALE 40oz, I SMITE THEE DOWN!
-
Anymore.
