Someone's Been Offered The Lead In THOR & Turned It Down!!

Published at:  Oct 21, 2008 9:50:06 PM CDT

Merrick here...

During a recent discussion about QUANTUM OF SOLACE, IESB spoke to Daniel Craig about being on the short list of actors to play the title character in THOR.

Craig said yes they [Marvel] did approach him but he turned it down.

...says THIS PIECE at IESB, which goes on to reveal more details about Craig's decision.

To the best of our knowledge, no director has been officially selected for THOR, although Kenneth Branagh is known to be attached & has evidently been reworking his schedule to accommodate this project.

He's 5'10, for gosh sake. Thor needs to be at least 6'4 or 6'5. Has to be an unknown/former athlete to pull off. Perhaps Craig was cast to play Dr. Blake, and they'd CGI Thor? Hard to character to bring to screen, to be sure.

I think they're at least thinking on the right track--

    by the reluctant austinite

Other than Dr. Strange, Thor has got to be Marvel's toughest egg to crack as far as making a big budget mainstream film goes. I've always been at a loss for good casting. You don't want a huge bodybuilder, you want a good actor. Daniel Craig is the right way of thinking about the part; someone who'll give a sense of realism to a part that could very easily look really silly. Kenneth Branagh is also a great choice for director; someone who can handle the grandiose Shakespearian operatic nature of the character and his world. The thing I'm most curious to see play out is how the film maker's are going handle it when Thor is plucked from Asgard and put into the modern world with "The Avengers." That's a potential train wreck waiting to happen. It'd be a fun mental production challenge to try and visualize that and sell it.

    A FEW THINGS...

    by mr. nice gaius

Thor is goofy. Especially when you consider his presence in the "real world". However, if they're shooting for a recognizable star like Craig, that's as good a start as any. In this case, I think Craig made the right choice.Kevin McKidd - no doubt he would make a perfect choice for Thor. However, when he was working on JOURNEYMAN, I distinctly remember reading somewhere that he had already been contacted about a role in THOR. It did not appear at that time that he was being considered for the lead. He seemed to insinuate that they were thinking of him for Loki. Make of that what you willFinally, Marvel needs to hire the casting director(s) from THE 13TH WARRIOR. Some of the best Norse-inspired character design can be found in that movie. They could definitely populate Asgard with some tough looking dudes.

is Thor really popular enough to make a feature length, high-budget film???...and succeed??? if i were a movie studio i would approach this with a modest budget...nothing over 50 million and do their damndest to find a bright up-and-coming actor to play Thor and fill the supporting roles with more well known actors and actresses or they are just ASKING for a problem. the first X-Men film had a modest budget given the material (75 million i believe) and relatively low-key actors at the time...and it was a BIG hit.

    by devil'sown

Karl Urban would be excellent in this role. Along with the Hulk, Thor is IMO one of the greatest characters of all time. The people who say he's not enough of a star attraction are blinding themselves to the entertainment value of this mythology. Thor is both royalty and a deity, his ego fed by lifetimes of praise. Whoever plays him will have to walk that fine line of being the noblest of heroes, and a bit of an ass, like Downey did as Shellhead. Like any fanboy, I'm both excited and cautiously optimistic (thanks to Iron Man)that Marvel is finally getting down to the business of creating a cohesive movie universe. If the story is treated properly, this could be a massive hit. And the resulting Avengers film could be the Lord of the Rings of superhero movies. I confess, the they're a sentimental favorite of mine. It was the first comic I owned. I admit, casting something like this is a challenge. Putting the right actor in the role of Loki is crucial, too. At least in comics continuity, he's the whole reason the Avengers come into being. Johnny Depp is the best suggestion I've heard so far, but they may have to go for somebody who's not a household name.

first off- thor could make a great movie in the right hands. it could be a mix of lord of the rings and iron man. they will probably go for the ultimates look- which means you dont need a heavily muscled guy. i hate to say it- but brad pitt has the right look (god i said it)... there are plenty of others out there but daniel craig?? HAHAHA that is the dumbest casting i have ever heard. thor is supposed to be a good looking, big guy. craig is small and ugly. i digress. thor would probably only be done justice in the hands of somebody like del toro or peter jackson- they have vision. branaugh does not know this character and WILL fuck it up. i will bet he doesnt even end up doing this movie...

I've finally got it: Charlie Hunnam!

    by the reluctant austinite

It took me a good bit of thinking to come up with a young actor that I think might be able play Thor seriously. I, for one, don't want to see a wrestler play this role. That would doom any chance this project has for success. Charlie Hunnam was the lead hooligan, Pete Dunham, in "Green Street Hooligans," and he was amazing. He had a small part in "Children of Men." Look him up on imdb if you don't know him. He's young enough to play the part for any number of Avengers films, and he kind of reminds me of a Brit Heath Leadger. He's also a semi-unknown, so there's no star baggage. Charlie Hunnam for Thor 2010!

He played "Little John" in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

    Come on!

I seriously surprised that someone said Chow Yun Fat as Thor. I was going to put that on.

C'mon Marvel, don't fuck this up. You've learned from the painfully miscast mistakes of the past. Don't have another "hot" actor cast as one of your properties. Ofcourse we don't expect you to find a 6'6" actor who's 200+ lbs. o' muscle. But this dude's a god who commands the forces of the storm. I don't know any other way to say it, it has to be someone good looking who can pull off the physicallity of the role. Oh, yeah. And it'd be nice if he could act. Otherwise those scenes he's going to appear in with RDJ (his brother in drinking and wenching) are gonna be awful AWKwaaarrd.

    by devil'sown

He basically played a badass Viking in LotR. He's perfect. Brad Pitt? Interesting choice, but I always thought he'd make a proper Cap. I saw Matt Damon mentioned for the Sentinel of Liberty. He's kind of an intriguing suggestion. After Bourne, I can't deny he could very well do it.

After rewatching that clip, I don't know how they can pull this off. Tech heroes are a lot more plausible to viewers than mystical heroes. Thor will be the first Marvel franchise to hit the big screen with a purely mystical hero.

    by orbots commander

I don't know how one adapts Marvel's Mighty Thor to the big screen without it being a big joke. I think one way to cut down on the silliness is to excise the Dr.Blake secret identity stuff. Branagh is better off making it a combination Lord of the Rings (the large canvas mythic epic-ness) crossed with Marvel's Ultimates Thor.

    Size doesn't matter!

    by mbeemer

(At least, in Hollywood.) For everyone dismissing actors as being "too small" or "not tall enough", that is child's play for Hollywood now. They made John Rhys-Davies look like a *dwarf* in the middle of crowds. They can adjust the size of any actor they cast as needed, if the actor is good enough to be worth the expense.

    Details on script?

    by devil'sown

I've heard people mention that it's good, but I don't know any of the particulars. See, a few years ago I read about Neil Gaiman wanting to do a Thor story for comics. Well, in my fevered little brain, I thought with Neil's recent ventures into screenwriting and his consumate grasp of all things mythical, he could have wrote a killer screenplay. Throw in a good genre director like del Toro or Snyder, and you'd have one hell of picture.*** I try to keep an open mind to other peoples' opinions. I don't always succeed, but I try. It kinda frosts me when these trolls (how apropos!) come here and say this concept is too goofy to fly, or there just isn't enough familiarity with the character to appeal to mass audiences. A thousands-year-old figure of Norse myth versus what? A video game character some neb designed six months ago? For those who would ponder how this project would work, I kindly point out it's all about carefully sustained at-mo-sphere. C'mon, we're big kids here- everybody knows you can do damn near anything with spfx nowadays. But what you do with said effects makes a world of difference. Yeah, it can come off as goofy, or if used judiciosly, can be really keewwlll, mmkay? And, not only do they have the myths to draw upon, but they have about forty frickin' years of Marvel continuity; from Kirby's Journey into Mystery to Walt Simonson's epic juxtaposition of fantasy adventure in modern times. I have yet to read Straczynski's run on Thor, but I hear it's the cat's ass.

Dr. Strange is something we'll have to ponder on--

    by the reluctant austinite

Johnny Depp is the first person that comes to mind that could really knock Dr. Strange out of the park Downey Jr. style. But Depp is either being considered for or cast as every major role that comes along these days. Jim Caviezel would indeed be interesting. Jeremy Irons maybe a bit long in the tooth, but could have been cool. Same for Timothy Dalton. I still say CHARLIE HUNNAM FOR THOR 2010!!!

    by chien_sale

I don't want them near someone as great as Thor. McKidd is more of a blue collar guy. Urban was so bad in Pathfinder, that guy is not an actor. And Bana was boring and lifeless in Troy so that's saying a lot. I think Craig just have that mix of grit and look to be Thor. He was pretty damn buff in the first Bond. Also they could give him things to stand on.
