PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Director To Adapt FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND, From The Writer Of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT!!

Published at:  Oct 21, 2008 2:28:57 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

David Gordon Green will direct a horror thriller based on the Dark Horse graphic novel “Freaks of the Heartland."

The writer of "Freaks of The Heartland," Steve Niles, also wrote the wintery vampire graphic novel "30 Days of Night."

Green's prior directorial credits include "George Washington," "All The Real Girls," "Undertow," "Snow Angels" and "Pineapple Express."

Tuesday morning’s Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:

Illustrated by Greg Ruth, [Steve] Niles' six-part 2004 series about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen's attempts to protect his "monster" of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley's other "freaks" from their parents' worst instincts.

    30 days of night..

    by harold-sherbort

..exceeded my expectations for a modern day horror movie. Of course, my expectations were so low that you could drop a boulder on them and never hear it land, so.....

  • Goonies. This sounds like a rubbish rehashed plot and I hated 30 Days of Night. That film was absolutely rubbish and I'm sure this will be too!

    big mistake

    by roccotheripper

i've read this graphic novel and it is nothing AMAZING that must be caught in film form. it's about a bunch of freaks, just stumbling retarded giants, running away from their homes. idk... i don't think it's going to make any money in the theatres.

    Does this mean...

    by solongyoubastard

He won't be remaking Suspiria? If that's true then god bless this project. I'd much rather see Green make his own horror movie than leave a shit stain on Argento's classic. Cool title too.

so is this guy off the Suspiria remake then?

    by spandau belly

I hope so, just leave Suspiria be Mr. Stoner Comedy, you're not up to Argento's madness.

    Where's Preacher?!?!

    by tell_your_mom_i_said_hi

I have nothing against Steve Niles and his comics being made into movies, but what the fuck, man? Where's the damn Preacher film at? HBO doesnt wanna do it, fuck em--get it on Showtime! I wouldn't be impartial to some 100 Bullets either. There are helluva lot of "better" properties out there that aren't getting any film treatments. Makes me a sad panda.

Have you seen any of other DGG's work? I'd hardly call him a Stoner Comedy director. Pineapple Express was the exception to the rule.

    As for the Suspiria remake...

    by chaplinatemyshoe

I think it might end up happening anyway...this just means we're not insured a great young director will be on the project.

story sounds great...but I will boycott this director....

Fuck this. Too many talented directors out of work to finance this cunt's career.

    RE: DG's Dickblood

    by chaplinatemyshoe

Perhaps those "talented directors" should get back to work by making smaller scale movies like DGG did.

chaplinatemyshoe, maybe I was a bit harsh

    by spandau belly

I actually don't have any big problem with the few of this guy's movies that I have seen and I haven't seen Pineapple Express.I guess I'm mostly just opposed to the idea of remaking Suspiria. Though strangely, I think Tarsem would be the ideal guy to do it even though I haven't liked any of his movies so far.Maybe this DGG guy can do some more crazy stuff that I just haven't seen. His movies mostly seem like Gus Van Sant type deals and not that crazy dream world that Argento could build with his films.

    Undertow is a GREAT film

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

If you're only judging Gordon-Green on Pineapple Express then you need to watch Undertow. Only then can you comment on if he is suitable for this type of film. Over and Out.
