UPDATE!! Showtime Renews DEXTER For Seasons Four And Five!! Capone Has Seen 3.4, 'All In The Family,' For Himself!!

Published at:  Oct 21, 2008 3:45:17 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

UPDATE!! Showtime announced early Tuesday morning that it had ordered a fourth and fifth season of "Dexter." Each season will comprise 12 episodes.

Dexter's third-season opener attracted 1.2 million viewers. While meager compared to ratings scored by most HBO dramas, the opening was the second biggest series premiere in Showtime's history, second only to June's fourth-season "Weeds" opener.

The boundlessly resourceful and insightful Capone returns with a look at tonight’s installment:

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago with a quick look at "Dexter's" Season 3, Episode 4. Now, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the first four episodes of this season's episodes, but there may not be any other reviews beyond this one. Time will tell. These first four have been especially good, if somewhat scattered. What does Dexter's friendship with Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) have to do with his relationship with Rita and her kids? What does any of that have to do with Dex's sister Deb's increasing closeness with a confidential informant or her being approached by the Rat Squad to snitch on a fellow officer? I'm guessing all questions will be answered; I'm just a impatient bastard. But tonight's episode features a brand new case, unconnected to the Oscar Prado murder (I guess that counts as one more level of disconnect, but I still dug it). Read on, blood lovers.

What's the title of "Dexter" 304?
"All in the Family"

Who directed?
Keith Gordon, director of four previous "Dexter" episodes, including this year's season premiere. Sometime actor Gordon is probably best known as the lead (human) character in CHRISTINE, as well as for directing such features as A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, MOTHER NIGHT, WAKING THE DEAD, and THE SIGNING DETECTIVE, starring Robert Downey Jr.

Who wrote it?
Adam E. Fierro, also listed as a "consulting producer" on this episode (no others). He's better known as the writer of 11 episodes of the "The Shield," of which he is also co-producer. He also has written for "24," of which is a co-executive producer; and Resurrection Blvd., on which he is also co-producer.

Where do we pick things up?
Dexter fabulous narration wonders if Miguel Prado is his one true friend, since he was able to trust him with a sliver of his dark secret. Meanwhile, Dexter and Rita decide to tell her kids about her pregnancy; they are less than impressed. The daughter, Astor, seem particularly confused about the news, since Dex and Rita aren't married. Unadvisedly, Dex floats a marriage proposal in Rita's general direction, which she soundly dismisses like a bad joke.

As for the Prado's tensions are rising between Miguel and his sheriff brother Ramon, who argue constantly about finding their brother's killer. Miguel, knowing who the killer is, tries to dissuade Ramon from continuing his search. In an effort to diffuse Ramon's rage (often alcohol fueled), Miguel approaches Dexter about telling Ramon the truth about the supposed killer, Freebo, who Dexter dispensed with already. Dex talks him out of it, knowing the issues isn't quite closed, and he sets about a masterful plan to fracture the brothers' relationship.

Does Dexter's plan involve telling Ramon the truth?
It does.

Is the Rat Squad's Yuki Amado still after Deb to get close to former narcotics officer Quinn?
Mostly in the form of poorly timed text messages, most of which Deb ignores. Yuki makes an appearance at the end of the episode, with a profile of Quinn that matches to the letter what Deb is slowly learning about him.

Any new cases for the detectives to fret over?
Oh yes, and it's totally unrelated to the Prado-Freebo case. An apparent breaking and entering has resulted in a dead man, and a blood-soaked fiancee. The woman is so rattled that Deb's oh-so-subtle ways don't seem to work in getting a description of the killer, who blew right be her as he ran from the house. Quinn steps in to calm her down. He is therefore dubbed "The Witness Whisperer."

Do Dexter and Prado get to hang a little bit more in this episode?
Indeed. Actually, Dexter spends some quality time with two Prados this week. He deliberately runs into Ramon at a bar her frequents, where Dex proceeds to push his buttons while seeming to be Miguel's new best friend.

Other than a botched proposal, how is Dexter's better half?
Unemployed for one. She gets fired from her hotel job, and suddenly the logic of marriage seems clearly, but Rita is still resistant. Dex meets with Miguel to discuss the best proposal method, but really it's to talk about Ramon's increasing instability. He eventually even shows up in the squad room

Two weeks ago, Angel and Quinn uncovered evidence that would have cleared a man being prosecuted by Prado? What happened there?
Lt. Laguerta confronts Miguel one last time. She's sure that he's ignoring solid new evidence to keep his conviction record clean. He rebuffs her again, and this time she takes the evidence to the convicted man's defense attorney.

Hooker? Who said anything about a hooker?
Angel ends up in a hotel room with a beautiful lady of the evening. She yells at him for not having any money on him, even though his pockets are full of cash. Hmmmm…

Does Dex get to put on funny hats and pretend to be someone he isn't?
Yes he does. He gets to put on a fake Italian photo accent and pretends to be a key anonymous informant.

What I liked?
Angel's hooker incident reveals a vast emptiness and probably depression over losing his wife, daughter, almost his job. Also, we actually get to see Dexter at work, testing out blood-splatter scenarios. I also liked the one scene in which Deb and Quinn speak frankly about why she's bad with witnesses. But he also wisely tells her to get a poker face and use other tools in her toolbox besides a hammer. In addition, the way Dexter plays the two remaining Prado brothers against each other to get Miguel to change his tune regarding spilling their secret to his brother. Genius!

What I didn’t like?
The main through-line continues to be intriguing, but the dead fiancee case seems ripped right out of an episode of "Law and Order."

So is Freebo's body found by anyone other than Dexter or Prado?
No.

How does it end?
Not exactly a cliffhanger, but Dex realizes that marrying into a family isn't as important as being married TO the family. Meanwhile, Miguel reminds Dex that Dex is the only man Miguel feels he can trust in this day and age.

    Dexter

    by subtlety

Has been going downhill recently. I loved season 1 to death, but feel like it never reached those same heights since. If I remember correctly, season 1 is based on the entire first novel, which ends at the end of the season. Maybe that's why it never seemed to quite get is intertia back? Ah well. It's still hella fun, just a little diminished. And Jimmy Smits is a hottie, no doubt. Besides, he was the one good thing in the whole SW prequel trilogy -- since Dex is already pretty solid, adding him to the mix only improved things!

    by brendon

And Gordon starred in, and co-wrote, I believe, Mark Romanek's Static.

While the film IS available on DVD, Romanek's apathy towards the film has meant the title has ended with a very low-budget release and an accordingly crap transfer.

    A crying shame.

evilwizardglick had it about right on his take of the books, although I didn't think the third book was as bad as some other fans thought. For my take, I miss how the Dexter's Dark Passenger is more of a character in the books, but that would probably be hard to pull off successfully on screen.

season 1 is somewhat based off the 1st book, but there are key significant changes in the show. and as for the show diminishing in quality, i'm not sure what you're looking for but dexter is in the top 3 best shows on tv. its remarkable that we are cheering for a serial killer, and Hall executes every nuance about dexter morgan in a flawless manner. the stories are tense/funny/fresh, and if anything, season 1 had the most filler episodes out of all 3 seasons so far. i love them all, and cannot understand how someone would say its loosing steam.

As a word of explaination (1st season spoilers)

    by subtlety

I think the thing I liked about season 1 better than the other two is that it seemed more like a focused, slow burn. The Ice Truck killer appears in the very first episode and info about him is doled out very very slowly across the season as it almost imperceptibly ratchets up the tension. Although the "brothers" twist is about the oldest, most obvious trick in the book, I think its handled quite sensetively, and Brian is a great character. I guess to me, season 1 feels like a single story (Ice Truck) with a lot of subplots, where the later seasons feel a little less focused and driven in a single direction. I also think the narrative of the mystery of Ice Truck is better than the "will he get caught?" tension since, I guess because its a kind of more proactive rather than reactive setup. Just to clarify, though, I guess "going downhill" isn't really what I meant. I still love the show, and heartily agree it's one of the best things on TV. As far as my personal tastes go, though, the story arch from season 1 was far and away the most satisfying, although we'll see where season 3 goes. But I don't want to hate on the show cuz you're right, it is great. The quality of the show (writing, acting, production) was top-notch from the start and has remained so -- but for me the story has grown a bit unfocused. Matter of personal taste I guess, although I've talked to several other people who feel the same way. But hey, maybe I should quit complaining while something so good is being produced...

While I think it would be hilarious if it turns out he actually has a gay man crush on Dexter, I highly doubt it. I think it's pretty clear at this point that Prado, maybe finally pushed over the edge by his brothers murder, has decided that he wants to get into the serial killing business. It's going to come to light that Prado has known about Dex ever since the Bay Harbor Butcher case, and has been waiting for an opportunity to go into business with him.

The first season was brilliant, the second season was very good and this season is merely good. He's too human now. His code use to be about not getting caught, now it's about not killing good people. He doesn't come across as the different kind of creature he was in S1 and that was the heart of the show to me. And although I love Julie Benz, he should have bailed on the relationship as soon as she started to unthaw. I don't want a marriage-baby plot in this show.

Not that it's bad, exactly, just short of its initial brilliance. And its hard to tell if Jennifer Carpenter is hot or not, because Debs is such an annoying character, but it may just be the way she's chosen to play the needy, juvenile little sister. It'd be much easier to think she was hot if she was related to John Carpenter, but ah well, you can't have everything.

    dexter is only getting better..

    by soup74

i was hesitant after the first episode of season 3, it seemed like the freebo case was going to take over the whole season, but they wrapped that up in episode two and used it as a foil to introduce dexter having a powerful friend (jimmy smits) that accepts him for who he is (or a bit of who he is..time will tell if they do a full reveal.) also, one of dexter's biggest weaknesses (the show, not the character) was that all the other characters other than dexter were kind of one dimensional, but they're working on that a lot in season 3. also, while i liked the unfeeling killing machine dexter was in season 1, but we saw that already and he's been though a lot. it's interesting to see how his character grows. I think the character is a metaphor for how we can all feel disconnected to real emotions occasionally, but we learn. (especially in this episode.. the end proposal and voiceover made it seem like he wasn't just playing the role of 'husband and father' but that those were just new factors in him enjoying playing the role as 'human.')

    by fanboy71

The first two books were excellent, but the third drifts way too far into WTF territory for me. The idea that Dexter's Dark Passenger is some sort of supernatural entity that has been alive forever is just dumb. And it takes away the fact that people are ultimately responsible for their own actions. Also, on the subject of the kids, if every kid with a lousy parent grew up to be a serial killer, the world would be full of serial killers. To have 3 (Astor, Cody, and Dexter)under the same roof in ridiculous. I am SO glad that the series has branched out on it's own instead of following the books.

yeah, I know what you mean, especially on the volume of serial killers. Of course, the series does kind of live and breath on the idea that there are tons of serial killers running around Miami for Dex to kill, too (OK, some are just multiple murderers, not "Serial killers" in the traditional sense). I always laugh at the number of serial killers in media... there have only ever been, what, under 500 serial killers in real life, that we know of? And most have pathetically small kill counts. The number of S. killers in media is probably ten times the amount there have ever been in real life, and nearly all of them are waaaay more effective than the real thing ever is. But you're right, even in a show with the premise of a serial killer killing other serial killers in his home town, the three-under-one-roof thing was way past believable.
