    Theory about who don called

    by moseschrute

Missed out on reading last week's talkback, so sorry if this ground has already been tread upon, but at the beginning of the season, when Don mailed Meditations in an Emergency to someone, didn't he sign it "D—-" That could be Don or Dick. You think the person he mailed that to is the same person he called at the end of the last episode?

    by powers boothe

I have a feeling Jon Hamm won't seem as cool once those writers on SNL feed him those shitty lines. The sketch writing on SNL is so dreadful that I hate to see someone I dig, host the show.

herc confuses the hell out of me with those exclamation points sometimes. And yeah, the book reciever is the same as the phonecall. and dollars to donuts says its the chick that knew he wasn't don draper at car lot. three unsolved mysteries and the answer to all three is the same thing. tonight we get to find out what all those things mean i bet. by timahh

don is sitting in the pool with joy late at night. he stares for a long time at his glass and then the camera looks at the glass. We're talking at least 7 seconds devoted to this half empty cup. Next time we see don he wakes up and immediately makes the phone call............theres something to that.

    by mansuper

were being used imporperly last week too!!! I know the characters on the show don't end every sentence with such unbridled enthusiasm!!! But it could be said that te exclamation points actually refer to the great feelings of anticipation the viewers(us) have when contemplating what significance those quotes have.

What a spectacular episode. I love Peggy's, "I'm sleeping with Don. It's really working out." Priceless. I love the comfortable affability that we see between Peggy and Pete. But Poor Joan is right. Peggy is such a perfect counterpoint to her in this episode. Both are caught in the tension of the time's expectations of a woman, and where Peggy is excelling you have Joan getting just degraded. Awful. And Betty! What a delicious turn during the phone call. And as for Don, could you not just feel the change in him when he's around Anna? You see how everyday he can be and how stifled he really had become in his own home. And it also shows how good Jon Hamm is. What a show.

    Anna & other observations...

    by growltiger

    Some thoughts and observations...

What a wonderful friend Dick has in Anna.

I always thought that tarot readings was an artifact of the late sixties. Silly me, of course the tarot has been around for centuries. And that was some reading Anna gave.

The shots where we gaze out the draped window have a nice cinematic quality.

I recall, as a youth, the hot rod and funny car craze. (I grew up in Southern California.) The call of the Sunday, Sunday, Sunday races in Long Beach or Irwindale raceways had been buried until this evening.

Speaking of cinematic shots, the rug level shot of Don's office whilst Joan was being raped were also compelling.

    Man Men is a gem!

    by xiphos_2

I loved all the insight into the Dick Whitman/Don Draper dynamic. I thought it was genious the way they used light to show the difference between LA and NYC and how much younger and more care free Don seemed. Maybe Betty might be getting back on the rails since she started to treat her daughter decently.Peggy rocks. Everbody at Sterling Cooper better watch themselves. She rounding out nicely, landing accounts, getting a premire office over every male, She's learning to operate. Man poor Joan, that's all I can say. Lost the TV gig, lost face in the office, now her fiance is a shit bird. I hope she figures a way to get back at that limp prick closet case.I need to build a new chopped and turned out car.

    by tophat

...that Betty has been putting up a front just like Don this whole time? We saw glimpes of her true self last season (her shooting the birds) and explained them as her being a typical repressed 1960s housewife. But, after how she's been acting while Don has been away, I'm starting to believe she acts this way, not from repression, but because this is how she really is and she's been acting a different person just like Don. Also, does Joan's fiance have erectile disfunction? Is that what they were talking about in bed? I think he just can't have a confident woman like Joan be on top, so, he forced her down.

    by danielkurland

I'll focus on Pete. Probably his best stuff this season in this episode, and I'm sure we'll see it continued in the finale. Also, that Joan rape had so many shades of Lynch in it. Just from the ambience to the focusing on the arbitrary objects. Don will be so pleased to see Peggy excelling when he turns. It's fairly clear that Don is the main charcter. But really, it's not difficult to mildly slant your perspective and watch this as Peggy's show or Betty's show.

    by unscripted

I don't really get all the Pete worship here - he's a spineless, manipulating wuss. He never measured up for Daddy and now he never will. He took Peggy when she was extremely naive and vulnerable, and now circles her warily like he's waiting for her to strike back. Of course he "respects" her now - she's clearly got her hands on the power levers. Aside from being mildly interesting in context, he's a despicable character.

Betty, OTOH, is showing herself to be an evil witch. That setup of her friend and the horse guy was one of the nastiest, coldest things I've seen outside of the grittier eps of Sopranos. BTW, anyone not familiar with the title piece should go give it a listen. It was the perfect mood-setting piece for both the ep and the season. You're right, it was $947. I was looking at what must be the YTD figure. OTOH, $16k in October means something like $20k a year - which isn't all that high and isn't close to the $45k he got early in the year. (I recall my Dad making around $11-12k at the time as a GS-12.) The real money must be coming in dividends and partner shares - so Betty isn't as smart as she thinks.

    Betty's little accident

    by unscripted

Betty getting her period has several facets with respect to the story line and show drama - plus, as my wife commented, it's something you NEVER see on television except for occasional crude humor. I can think of several reasons for that inclusion, but here's the most important: she's either not pregnant (important to close that story door after their roll on the floor)... or she's had an early miscarriage. Stay tuned.

I guess I mean arrogance, in that he reacted in a "oh yea, well fuck you then" manner, when he probably could have smoothed things over with his father-in-law just to save the account. Yes, his father-in-law was a weasel for dangling the account for "review", just because his daughter was unhappy, but I would think in the world of Sterling/Cooper the bottom line is the account, family comes second.

I think the character is more nuanced than some of you guys give credit for ... In fact this episode made me think that specifically; that the "good guy" Don/Dick is seriously flawed, and the "bad guy" Pete has the capacity to redeem himself or be redeemed. What's true of them both is they are messes, in general - very human messes.

    Best one of the season...

    by mr. n

and perfectly sets up next week. Can't wait. Don will obviously come back but I hope that he's at least a little bit happier about his life when he does. Betty is cold and cruel and I could see divorce happening but not yet, it's too early and it'll have to be instigated by Don (cause Betty would never go through with it). I love how this show has two couples that just bristle with tension (of the sexual nature), Pete and Peggy & Roger and Joan. If Joan really does get married then both couples will have the attraction but be unable to act on them openly. I eventually see Peggy outgrowing Pete (which she sort of already has) while he still remains interested in her. Her deliver of the "sleeping with Don" line was incredible. Poor Joan, Hendricks deserves awards and more for this episode. Joan deserves to be her own woman which she won't let happen. I think she'll hook up with Paul (since he's single now) again and leave or kill her husband (hereafter known as Dr. Rugrape).

Pete never wanted a kid in the first place...

The idea of raising someone else's kid is just sending him over the top.

Or just an heir in general...

I thought Pete's mom just wanted a grandchild of their blood, not necessarily a male. And SHE was the one putting pressure on him, no one else. Pete has ridiculous Mommy issues. But yeah, it wasn't a male heir, this show is in 1962, it's not the Middle Ages where rights were only passed down to males.
