When Kenan Thompson explains that Tina Fey is no longer a regular on the show, will Palin take to her helicopter and hover above the entrance of Silvercup Studios’ “30 Rock” set, ready to chase Fey up 22nd Street, “Apocalypse Now” style? Tonight’s Palin appearance on “SNL” will likely prove a huge win-win. Palin, always far more coherent when she’s got a script to read, gets exposure without having to deal with anyone’s bedeviling follow-up questions. SNL meanwhile should get a mammoth boost to its already surging ratings. Saturday editions of SNL have been up more than 50 percent over the prior year, routinely drawing north of 8 million viewers; to put this in context, election coverage helped a September episode of cable's “The Daily Show” top 2 million viewers for the first time in that series’ history. Bigger still is the Palin-free, Fey-free primetime Thursday edition of SNL, which has emerged as NBC’s highest-rated fall scripted series (new or returning) in the 18-49 demo, pulling in nearly 11 million viewers in total. 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
