Cool News
The BBC just posted their first review of the new James Bond film, QUANTUM OF SOLACE!!!
Hey folks, Harry here - just got a ring from the BBC's Lizo Mzimba, who just got out of QUANTUM OF SOLACE, just typed up his thoughts, just posted them to the BBC - and then picked up the phone excitedly to tell me - THEY"RE UP! You can read his full review at the BBC - link below - but on the phone, he essentially told me the below, which is from the review, as the key thing that stuck out in his mind about the film. SOUNDS LIKE WHAT I WANT!
It's a film that feels like the second part of a trilogy, with this being the bleaker second act.
For a lot of the movie Bond is a particularly unsympathetic character, and often it's only Craig's performance along with the shifting morality of Bond's legion of enemies that forces the audience to root for him.
Olga Kurylenko, who plays a refreshingly different kind of female companion, does well with a part that has far more depth than most Bond girls.

Meanwhile - Ali from London & TheShizNit sent us this:
QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Where does a character go once he's been reinvented? Stripped down to
the bare essentials, the James Bond of Casino Royale – the 007 that
Ian Fleming would have approved of – proved extremely popular with
audiences and critics alike, enough for them wipe the slate clean and
agree to start afresh. Bond now rebooted, battered physically and
emotionally, therefore comes into this sequel a fully-formed, grounded
character with places to go: a man with drive, reason, purpose. But
despite his passport getting a workout thanks to a jet-setting
narrative that takes him half way across the globe, the James Bond of
Quantum Of Solace goes precisely nowhere. At times, you feel you can
see the character – and by proxy the writers – actually thinking, "So
what now?"
We pick up with Bond, James Bond, mere minutes after the finale of
Casino Royale – in Italy with the sinister Mr. White (Jesper
Christensen) in the boot of his car, nursing a painful looking leg
injury. But perhaps British intelligence isn't what it used to be. "We
used to be so paranoid," laughs White, "looking over our shoulders,
thinking you were listening to our conversations. But you didn't even
know we exist!" White claims his organisation Quantum – think SPECTRE
but without the awesome lairs – has men everywhere, and he's not
wrong. Bond travels to Haiti, London, Bolivia and Russia chasing
Quantum goons, principally the weasely Dominic Greene; a smarmy
eco-crusader in public, but facilitator of evil deeds behind closed
doors. Think Al Gore gone insane with power.
Bond's arc here ought to be revenge; the death of Vesper Lynd the
righteous cause. But Craig's emotionless visage is so blank, the
script so bereft of character, Quantum Of Solace feels like just
another day at the office for 007. Sure, he kills a few people he
shouldn't. He breaks the rules. He goes off the grid. But what kind of
Bond would he be if he didn't? It isn't until the final scene that
you'll actually remember Bond's motivations, so meaningless are his
exploits up until that point.
Craig, it must be said, is excellent. Any doubt he could inhabit the
role must surely now evaporate. His Bond is a real bruiser: smacked,
cracked, bleeding and beaten from pillar to post, Craig looks like
hell in the best possible way. The problems with Quantum Of Solace
should not fall at his feet. This is the best Bond he could be given
the circumstances.
No, the issues are with the studio's choice of director in Marc
Forster. This is a man who knows how to put dramatic audiences through
the wringer (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, The Kite Runner) but
he's completely out of his depth handling a franchise this large.
High-tempo sequences, like the opening car chase and an extremely
Bournian rooftop pursuit, are disorientating in the extreme: too fast,
too sloppy and too ruthlessly edited. Often, things change in the
blink of an eye – one second Bond is lying on his back, the next he's
jumping out a window, the next he's swinging from a rope. It's often
impossible to keep up.
Fight scenes often seem practised and stagey (Bond smashes an opponent
through a wall with ridiculous ease), while one shot sees 007 riding a
motorbike... at about 25mph. These are all hallmarks of a director
unfamiliar with action; perhaps former Paul Greengrass protege Dan
Bradley should be held responsible (it would certainly explain the
feeling of deja vu – as Bond jumps through yet another window, you may
feel like yelling, Alan Partridge style, "STOP GETTING BOURNE
WRONG!").
What's more, the realistic tone struck by Martin Campbell in Casino
Royale has taken something of a leave of absence here. MI6 use flashy,
over-the-top Minority Report-style holo-computers, when anyone who
reads the papers knows that British intelligence can't even hop in a
taxi without leaving their laptop in the back. Bond, leaping on a bad
guy's bonnet, finds time to fire of a clunky quip before his bullet.
Amalric's bad guy lurches uncomfortably from believably slimy to
ridiculously evil, lunging at Bond with an axe in a final showdown.
Though I hesitate to compare it to Indy's infamous 'fridge' escape,
the scene where 007 jumps out of a plane without a parachute /and
survives/ seems a little too far-fetched even for a Bond movie. All we
ask is for some consistency – this isn't Crank, this is Bond.
This is not a disaster on par with Die Another Day. In fact, in parts
it's quite watchable – Craig is a magnetic lead, those piercing blue
eyes are quite the attention grabber. Judi Dench, meanwhile, is once
again magnificent; all British reserve, stiff upper lip and frosty
delivery (a low-key scene with M at home, removing her make-up while
issuing orders, is perhaps the most disarming in the entire movie).
The Bond girls look the part, too, even if Olga Kurylenko (ticking the
boxes marked 'feisty' and 'headstrong') lacks personality and Gemma
Arterton (Agent Shagwell) lacks any decent screen time. On a second
viewing, perhaps the topsy-turvy storyline settles a little – a
menagerie of accents does mean some important plot points will be
missed first time around.
But make no mistake, Quantum Of Solace is a crushing disappointment.
Try as you might, you'll be unable to invest in any of the characters
– now Bond's heart has been broken, it's like nothing ever changed and
the character exists simply to get to the next location and car chase
and gun fight. It's a perfectly average action film, certainly better
than the last few Brosnan outings. But when Casino Royale set the bar
so high, it's not acceptable for a follow-up to simply stroll under
it. Once again, Bond finds himself at a cross-roads, standing still,
without direction. So... what now?

by indyabbey jones
we haven't had two good ones in a row since the dalton days..brosnan's era was hit, miss, hit, miss
i don't like the idea of a continuing story, but if EON want's to try for a third movie to cap off this story then at this point i say go for it, but ensure that craig is signed on to like 5-6 films so he can have some solo stories in his bond era, and plese keep pumping these out every 2 years..an actor should play bond for 15 years, somebody has to out reign moore -
in a row
-
But isn't Al Pacino meant to be in it?
BTW can we also expect Ebert phoning now to say the reviews are in?
Self propaganda rather then review, if you ask me... -
Amazing!
-
Hell... fucking... yes.
I know that's not what the reviewer meant by that statement, but I'm taking it as meaning that QoS hints at a third act. -
staring out of a window on a spaceship?
-
Enough said about that.
I'm pleased the film got a good review, although I hope the shorter length doesn't mean it's all over too quickly. Describing it as the middle part of a trilogy makes me wonder if the end to this movie will be picked up in the next. I just hope the next one doesn't involve Bond's father's redemption and the discovery that Bond was lusting after his sister... ;) -
Originally, we were supposed to get it on the (00)7th, but it was pushed back because Harry Potter was pushed back to next spring.
-
It's great that we get two weeks earlier but the cinema gods would really be too kind if we get the Trek trailer as well. Can't wait to see this film. Me and a huge group of friends going first night! cool!!!
-
I can play that game, too. And Dalton was the most accurate of the Fleming Book Bond, he was just done in by low budgets and tired cliches.
-
it is better than Casino Royale. That film got a lot of Oscar buzz, but no luck. If LOTR could finally shake the "fantasy film" taboo of the Academy, then perhaps Quantum of Solace can as well for espionage thrillers.
-
Can't wait.
-
I love this movie, but for the life of me what is in the suitcase? I know Frankenheimer was deliberately vague about it, but damn!! Anybody have any ideas?
-
Isn't it supposed to be T4? McG said so. bah who cares, this bond looks good.
-
Once the Fleming novels died up. They have no source material.
The producers are such a bunch of tight arses. They will never get a name director.
-
It doesn't matter what's in the case. That's why it's called a maguffin.
-
Total Film have given it 3/5:

Spielberg made the opening of Temple of Doom one long audition to direct a Bond movie. While a name director may sound good in theory, it adds to many individual personalities and voices. Every time Jenny Aniston or the Fresh Prince sign on to a movie, they have their people give it a little polish to enhance the part to reflect the star's style. A name director would do the same. Tarantino presents Bond or Scorsese's 007 would have little distracting elements that say, "I'm a Marty movie!" I think the producers have it right by finding solid dramatic Directors to flesh out the story elements and leave the action sequences to the proven and established production team.
-
He was.
-
I suppose if you really hated the Bonds that came before it, it might seem outstanding, but taken on its own, it would have been a completely forgettable movie if not for being a "new" take on Bond. ...Especially with the muddled and poorly paced third act.
-
is not a credible reviewer i'm afraid, i'd wait for the real reviews to roll in before breathing a sigh of relief.
-
Dalton was awesome as Bond.
-
The third act of Casino is dreadful, especially that comedy scene with the Swiss banker.
-
"Casino Royale set the bar so high"? This is sounding like a disaster. Maybe we'll get lucky and Craig will be out after this one.
-
QUANTUM stands for:Q-quickU-uberA-anarachistN-naughtyT-treacherousU-ultimateM-maniacsor something else....

Once completely redundant, now just mostly so.

I want to know if he's in it so I can get at least some solace after seeing these mediocre reviews.

Make this on my pay to see list. Craig is Bond and for reasons I fear to ponder, I would plow Dame Judi like a fresh meadow at planting time the display window at Macy's on Friday after Thanksgiving. She is My Personal Mila Kunis.

Saw it tonight, he's nowhere to be seen, and I can't see how a scene could've been cut either. Must've been total BS.

Don't they say that with very Bond movie?

Just read the second review... Damn...

I was looking forward to this, and now, I don't know.....

If that is who you truly are... was it a good movie? Was a Blofield-like character present?Did Bond ask for a martini shaken, not stirred?

Die Another Day is under-appreciated. Yes, the second half gets incredible, but the first half was solid.
I will go to Quantum of Solace only because the trailers promise big action--at least bigger than lamo-feeb chick flick Crapsino.

Connery was hands down the best. I do believe that Craig is great but too much credit is given to him. What made Casino Royale so engrossing was that it was an origin story. However, the formative Bond that Craig plays MUST become the smooth, ruthless, and suave killer that is 007 a la Connery.
-
Harry, I'm surprised you haven't reported on this yet: WATCHMEN had its first public screening last night (Thursday) in Portland, Oregon. Sad to report that... possible spoiler... per the most recent Alex Tse draft, the squid is history. It's nice to report, however, that Rorschach's gory and gut-wrenching origin has been left intact. And that Dan and Laurie have hot, costumed sex on the Owl Ship to the tune of the "Hallelujah" chorus. I'm sure the reviews will be spilling in like sliced arteries from everywhere soon... -
you'll find no solace here

They did it with Dalton and Brosnan already.

Ok, so Bond has just been put through the ringer, and they're going into SPECTRE territory, right? I want to see supervillians and take- over-the-world stuff this time. Realism+henchman+lasers-texas holdem= Bond perfection.

Casino Royale was confusing, and had too many villains...yet nobody was really the villain just sociopaths without a compass??? James Bond was a sociopath without reason, other than to be grumpy and simmering with burn-out and jadedness, again, for no reason??? And we never really saw Bond go from a fumbling unsure agent, to being a cold blooded killer--hell, the movie started with him being a cool killer even though it was his second kill. further Bond was pullng stunt moves Spiderman would have said was over the top, this from the near opening of the fiilm on???
Casino Royale was just overhyped and Daniel Craig is a miscast actor in the role, one who should have played a villain in the piece, not the hero!!! The point of the matter is, the producers were just using him as a transitional James Bond, a casting sacrifice, and a bridge from the old, to the next real perminent Bond, at least for a while, that is. The problem??? The movie accidently became a hit, thanks to all of the hype surrounding it. Still, I am certain that this was fully unexpected by the producers, who are now stuck with Craig for some time to come. Gerard Butler should have been cast as the new James Bond. He would have been amazing and enormously expressive in the role, something that Craig lacks. All Craig can play is down, cold, and moody like a sterile machine!!! James Bond needs to be played by an actor who is well rounded, someone who can make the character 3 dimensional, not monotone as Craig has done. -
This isn't insane with power?
-
...i wouldn't trust his review of a mars bar.
-
I'm still going no matter what the critics say. This is fucking Bond after all.

I really hope this review is wrong!

Good movie? Yes, but only good, we're not talking Casino Royale great.
There was NO Blofeld-type mysterious boss at all.

Tom Cruise's publicist is denying reports that Cruise is dead. I havent read this elsewhere. so a large pinch of salt is needed. The story that MTV is running is that Cruise it has been alleged fell to his death in New Zealand.

we are getting three more daniel Craig bond. so suck on that. There will be a bit of a gap between this and the next one. but the final Daniel Craig bond movies may or may not be sequels. I read that his final bond will be a new story. We will see....

The story MTV is running is that cruise hasn't fallen to his death!
as for future bond (and anything else for that matter) don't believe everything you read. That's years away yet. -
There's another review at The Times' website: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/film/london_film_festival/article4965892.ece
-
But I tend to go with the BBC review, although I can see how Forster is not the action guy they might have needed. One name: John McTiernan - the guy directed Predator, Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October back to back to back. Granted, 20 years ago and since then Rollerball, Last Action Hero and Medicine Man have passed, but given the right script he is the man Bond needs...
-
I got a ticket to last night's screening at the Odeon. Was it good? Of course it was!! Craig gives a much grittier performance following on from his Vesper betrayal. The action is full-on and the shorter running time doesn't effect the film, IMO. There's no gunbarrel at the beginning, instead this is attached to the end of the movie. There's a great scene where Bond evades capture by MI6 people when he skips over a low wall and casually walks along a high-up ledge and around the oncomming posse. It's a nice throwaway touch and is reminicient of Connery. Overall, Craig gives a top-notch performance.
-
some of you dont trust his reviews? What the fuck has that got anything to do with it? His reviews are more clearcut than most critics who tend to be full of pretentious shit.
-
Taken from the ticket. Of course I dont believe everything I read in the papers. As for the MTV non-story.BS Im sure .I dont watch MTV. Maybe they are desperate.
Craig has signed up to do four more films. Will the character continue to develop? "Well, if this one doesn't work, then who knows what will happen next. We will put more of a gap between this and the next film. The point of doing this film was to tidy things up from the first film. Next time the story will be starting from scratch."
-
Verdict: A pacy, visually imaginative follow-up. If it doesn’t even try to be bigger than Casino Royale, that’s perhaps a smart move in that there’s still a sense at the end that Bond’s mission has barely begun and he’ll need a few more movies to work his way up to destroying the apparently undefeatable Quantum organisation. The only real caveat is that while it’s exciting, it’s not exactly anyone’s idea of fun. To keep in the game, perhaps the next movie could let the hero enjoy himself a bit more.
-
Campbell did a GREAT job directing Goldeneye, and I had so much optimism that the other Brosnan films would also be great......but the powers that be hired other directors for the following three movies, and they all SUCKED!
They bring Campbell back to direct Casino Royale, and it's a great movie, maybe one of the best ever, and I worried what would happen if they didn't bring him back for the follow-up! My fears were apparently justified! -
and I'm expecting to...
-
Did you just compare Gerard Butler to Daniel Craig? Butler is a more well-rounded actor? Have you actually seen him in anything other than 300? The guys about as exciting as watching paint dry unless you're into good looking men with six pack abs. Come to think of it...
-
they seem to have something against other forms of media. especially uk media.
-
It bears repeating: "The only real caveat is that while it’s exciting, it’s not exactly anyone’s idea of fun. To keep in the game, perhaps the next movie could let the hero enjoy himself a bit more." Hmm, what some of us have been saying about this humorless, melodramatic, pointlessly grim take on Bond and Craig's blank portrayal.
-
was aksed to come back and direct QoS and said no.
-
"If we don't marvel at Bond's ability to extract the information he needs, and he becomes just a running, chasing, killing machine, that removes a large part of why he's attractive.
Daniel Craig looks extremely cool, and he has always been a strong actor, but he's never able to show us the depth he did in Casino Royale.
In his second outing as 007, he sets about using his licence to kill, in no uncertain manner. So set is he on vengeance that he makes Rambo look like a pussycat.
That monotony of callousness may be very modern, but it's the reason Timothy Dalton never quite worked as Bond - he lacked wit and humour.
Craig showed in Casino Royale that he can play comedy, but he's lost without help from the script.
The gags have gone, along with the gadgets. Wit and fun have deserted the franchise."

Almaric should star as Polanksi in a biopic of his life
by unionjackass.webs.com
That would be awesome. An extraordinary life acted by a great actor. Wow.

I didn't like 300, it was an ugly, pointless, and dare I say, racist propaganda film designed to bash Persians (Iranians)!!! Even worse, the film was all in its edit, all slo-mo, and fast, herky jerky effects edits...designed to hide that the film was lacking in budget and substance. Further, the backgrounds looked like a video game and painted. It was just another CGI abomination. And yes, you are right, Gerard Butler has been given, and or, picked, films that are beneath him since 300, considering all of the rich opportunities he has been afforded because of its very surprising success, due to the monstrous head of the hype machine showing itself, once again, and wllfully duped audiences buying into it???!!! Still, I think the role of James Bond would have suited him well, as he has a sort of a Hugh Jackman vibe, just a very smart and warm something about his manner...but he can also be very hard in tone. Craig, on the other hand, is monotone, stilted, and stoic, emotionally speaking, and that just doesn't work for me.Another actor who would have made a great James Bond is Sam Worthington...who you will soon see in the next Terminator film and James Cameron's Avatar. The guy, right now, is one of the best kept secrets in the industry, but boy can he emote. This guy, Sam Worthington, is the real deal!!!
-
I was totally scared when Marc Foster came on board. I thought he was so wrong to do a Bond movie. Then I saw the trailers, and my fear was slowly starting to fade a side, until this review.
Now I usually take any review with a grain of salt. But they mentioned the director, so now my fears have returned. I plan to see it no matter what, but now my expectations have been lowered a little. Shit. -
He had the exact look , he had the menace ,and some charm thrown in.
He just got given 2 crappy movies. -
Casino Royal was a good adaptation of Fleming’s book. I enjoyed it and hope that “Quantum of Solace” is able to deliver the goods. Daniel Craig is great in the role and, this holiday season, 007 is one of the only flicks I’m really looking forward to. The fact that the Star Trek trailer is attached just sweetens the pot.
-
Craig-the movie was missing too many of the Bond elements, as an action film it was good but as Jame Bond? overall his performance had too much brawn, not enough brains or humor-Brosnan was perfect-the right mix of brains and Brawn-Dalton was bland and boring-Moore was too Prissy,he didn't seem tough enough for the part-Lazenby was ok, but nothing memorable-Connery was the classic,iconic-BUT didn't seem smart enough -all brawn no brain
-
Hey I'm going for Daniel Craig. Casino Royale was flawed but salvaged by the supremely fine editing of Stuart Baird, who rarely does any wrong.
-
Please say it ain't so. I suspected it couldn't be as good as Casino Royale, but I wanted it to be. Expectations sufficiently lowered.
-
I thought he was ok, but far from the best bond. But I love Living Daylights - great Bond Movie!
-
are actually the same contents of the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Or the box in Kiss Me Deadly. Or the container in Mission Impossible 3.
-
sounds lame, bond now is just a replica of Bourne and Jack Bauer. on fact if compare them bond is the least person i care about. this new bond seems like the villain maybe they will do a video game adaption of goldeneye: rogue, where bond is evil. this sucks. pierce brosnian movies were at least original in style. and goldeneye is 10 times better than casino royale; which was a gay movie, dont believe me watch craig come out of the water; that scene was for fags. since when was bond so self-absorbed. the actual Bond had duality: cares for the people but maintaining his sanity by caring for himself.
-
How the hell is 300 racist?! It's based on historical events - are all WW2 films racist because they 'bash on' Germans?
-
First, the movie changed some of the historical events, and as you may know, one man's hero, is another man's terrorist!!! Now, the movie 300 is really about race baiting, in order to make Persians/Iranians look inhuman, and to demonize them!!! What a coincidence that this movie came out just in time for the U.S. to start threatening Iran??? I say there are no coincidences in life, and if they do exist, they are very, very rare...and this isn't one of them. It's called a Psi-Ops, and mental conditioning...a form of brainwashing of the public!!! Yep, this was a part of a much wider pre-planned propaganda campaign move to make the movie version of the comic book, for purposes of subliminally brainwashing many in this country, making the case that any war against Iran is just, and fair. And the fact that you bought into without asking any questions proved that it worked, at least, with some. I'll remind you that the Iranians protected the Jews from the Arabs and others, throughout history; I believe they even protected Jews from the Nazis. Recent problems between Iran's new President and Israel, do not speak for Iran. Iran's people are said to love America and the West...this is a known fact. The real rulers of Iran are its religious leaders, not its President, and one of those leaders is running against the current Iranian President because he disagrees with his positions on Israel--also a fact!!!As for the Spartans, they did not have clean hands, and there is an argument that they were not the good guys. Hell, they killed their own children, who happened to be disabled??? And many healthy children were intentionally killed during fight training!!! So much for being the good guys???!!! They sound like Nazis to me!!!
-
I am sure the action sequences are shot rather mediocre, but that entire (rather short) review seems too focused on the failures of the movie as an action film. Its a terrible and unbalanced review that doesnt even address the dramatic and emotional content that will probably make this film worthwhile. Just because Ali from TheShizNit cant invest in the characters does not mean most people wont be able to with ease. Horrible review I say!
-
You need help. Serious help.
The Persian Empire no longer exists, obviously - and the vast majority of your average filmgoers would not equate the Persians with the Iranians, so it's not exactly the most effective bit of propaganda is it?
'I bought into it' - no, sorry; if I 'bought into it' and 'it worked' then surely I should be a rabid Iran hater? Fact is, I don't give a shit about Iran, and I think you'll find that most people who watched 300 didn't come out of it suddenly thinking, "Fucking Iranians...".
You further shit on your own 'propaganda' theory by suggesting that the film's heroes resemble Nazis; so once again: not a very good bit of propaganda is it?
In short, you're a fucking delusional idiot with far to much time on your hands and an overactive imagination.
I bet you think 9/11 was an inside job as well don't you? -
Really? That is what you have to say? You Sir are a douche bag! You dumb F@CK Dont you realize this was a movie based on a comic book that came out in 1998 and it even says a FICTIONAL RETELLING of The Battle of Thermopylae.
Media Messiah you sir are a Dumb Dumb person who does no research and looks for things that are not there.
P.S. Stupid People are Stupid. -
...talkbackers are critical of the uk media because 9 times out of 10 it's full of shit (uk film critics kiss so much hollywood ass it's unreal!) and the other 1 time out of ten it's just a poor imitation of the US film media. you can't get through an issue of empire these days with out 20 references to 'film geeks' and 'fanboys', terms popularised by this very site. i love this site but the british film media has no identity of it's own to speak of what-so-ever.
-
I actually find that many UK Film Media outlets are extremely snobbish towards 'typical Hollywood popcorn' films.
How does the UK Film Media imitate the US Film media?
And just so you know; I was using the word 'geek' before Harry Knowles knew what an Internet was, so the word has been around a while. It was actually popularised in American film and TV, which being English language, tend to get shown in the UK... words travel. -
they believe British films are somehow better. This happens around the time of Baftas. The british press tends to look down its nose at films that are made outside britain. Irish films always do better in the US. They dont do as well as in the UK due to snobbishness. the net is full of shit too. I wouldnt trust half of the information that comes from it.
-
I simply answered PawPrint's comments in reference to the history of the battle, as that is how he presented his statement. You may or may not know this, but according to many press reports, many people blindly took the events as presented in The 300 for gospel, and thus a number of historians felt they had to correct the record by going public about the truth. The Spartans were feeding some of their own children to dogs for not being strong enough in battle school, and that was conveniently not talked about in the movie...as that would gotten in the way of the propaganda machine!!! And did you notice, no one of brown skin or darker, was presented in any way other than evil, sexually deviant, and morally depraved in that film???BTW, Hitler was exposed as a villain in a comic book, and he took the attacks he received very seriously, pre-World War II and pre-Holocaust, and guess what the name of the comic was??? Answer: Superman. Hitler said this was evidence of America trying to create Supermen, meaning, presenting ouselves as being more powerful than other nations. And that comic book, Superman, just happened to be right about Hitler, so comics can carry timely messages and political messages, both right, and or, wrong. The Watchmen warned of corrupt globalists and a staged attacks to bring the world closer, just like 911...and now we have a war and a economic crisis fueled by corrupt globalists??? And Batman Begins talked about globalists creating a Depression so that people could be better controlled, and here we now are facing a 2nd Great Depression??? what's the old sayng, more truths being told in Jest (and Fantasy Books and Movies), than openly, and or, in mixed company!!!My point, any art form, any media, or medium, can be used to spread propaganda and ideology...from the Simpsons, to South Park, The 300 movie, or in comic books like The Watchmen, to movies like James Bond, they all have their messages, even the Wizard Of Oz. All I am saying is, that The 300, unlike the others in my example, has the wrong message!!!

Dalton's Living Daylights is EASILLY one of the best post-Connery films. Licence To Kill had some flaws, but it was admirably violent and gritty. Too bad it came out 20 years before 007 fans suddenly WANTED that in the character.
-
I said the film was BASED on historical events. I worked out for myself that Xerxes wasn't a giant, no mutants were used by the Persian army, and probably no Rhinos...
"And did you notice, no one of brown skin or darker, was presented in any way other than evil, sexually deviant, and morally depraved in that film???"; apart from the Ephors, the corrupt councilman, the Hunchback, and Xerxes (portrayed by a Brazilian).
Grow up.
-
Meant to say there were plenty of 'non-dark-skinned' actors portrayed as evil such as the Ephors, the corrupt councilman, the Hunchback, and Xerxes.
More piss on your racism theory... -

i'm not talking about sight and sound or the broadsheets here...
by billyhitchcock
...they do snobbish to the max. some in a good way. but most english movie magazines, the tabloids and pretty much all tv shows festuring movie reviews will do anything to get a sniff of a c-listers pants. sycophants like paul ross, anyone on GMTV, BBC breakfast or T4 will whore themselves to any movie star that acknowledges their existence. 'ooooo tom cruise spoke to me and is aware i'm alive'.
jonathan ross is the only person in the mainstream that gives an honest opinion and luckily he's a film geek too :-) -
...maybe imitate was the wrong word. i should've said emulate.
-
"most english movie magazines, the tabloids and pretty much all tv shows festuring movie reviews will do anything to get a sniff of a c-listers pants."
As will most American magazines, tabloids, TV programmes - it's because they want to sell more magazines/papers or get more ratings. -
I've read all the broadsheet reviews; and Empire and Total Film.
Everyone, they are all positive. Some extremely and some merely respectful. Seems those in the latter category are bemoaning the lack of humour and wit - something which I personally will not miss one bit.
I think Bond fans have waited an awful long time for the Fleming character to be taken seriously enough. He's pissed that the love of his life has been taken down - and this is that story. Awesome
Cannot wait for October 31!!! -
I'm sure there are already Brosnan/Goldeneye comparisons being made based on these negative words. It did make me wonder, momentarily, if Martin Campbell is cursed?
Both his Bonds have been spectacularly better than everything else (Bond) in the last twenty years and set the bar rather high - is Craig going to be served the same kind of crap Brosnan was following Goldeneye?
To add to the parallels, the Quantum game has already garnered reviews comparing it to the watershed Goldeneye game for the N64...
I think I'll reserve my judgement until I actually see the movie.
I remember a lot of people damning Craig before Casino came out and being quite confident he would kick ass - which he did - and my faith in this follow-up is not quite shaken just yet... -
but that second review makes the movie sound like it might turn out like tomorrow never dies, which was just a huge miss...like a movie that didn't know what it wanted to be untill the third acti'm hopinh it turns out better and i'll reserve judgement untill i see it, but i really hope forster wasn't a bad idea, because if the movie does suck, they will just go back to a random action director for the third movie and we'll get die another day part 2
-
There's just not all that much hope...for it to be better than the classic GOLDENEYE 64.
-
But the most entertaining interviews are the ones with jonathan ross and gordon ramsay. very entertaing and very funny. always a pleasure to watch. I think there is an issue here about critical analysis. people find the essay style thing boring and I was given part three of the grant film reader series for christmas.
-
and the wit was very good idea. and before all the paul haggis card psychology nonsense. the film rocked. The film kicked ass.
-
Simply because it's following one of the better Bond films of all time, Casino Royale. The expectations are way too high, so people are going to overreact when it doesn't eclipse CR. I envision a Tomato Meter reading between 75-80%
-
Blaming the action sequences on Bradley is BS....! Bradley shot some 2nd unit on the New Indiana Jones and you can obviously see he was guided well by Spielberg. I do hope the action was shot well and not over edited MTV style.
-
to the franchise's detrement that they are copying Bourne. they even snagged, the stunt co-ordinator. If you look at the trailer and I have seen it twice, QoS looks very bourne like. but the trailer makes it clear that Vespa Lynd was devious and like leChiffre was expendable. These people are ruthless.
-
shorter than CR.
-
...we're going to go ahead and discard the opinion of a BBC reporter and go with the dude whose site is called "The Shiznit."
-
I mean, get real, sell outs. You blew the franchise (again) right there. Seriously. you think ANY Bond Girl get's their stuff Avon? What's next, Bond suits at WALMART? Brand saturation at its ugliest. CAN'T take it serious now. Idiots.
-
I won't add any further comment as we are in agreement about your words.
-
i concur the gayest scene in the movies.
-
So you agree that there were just as many 'non-dark skinned' people portrayed as evil in the film '300' - in fact the main 'evil' characters were all 'non-dark skinned' - which then pisses on your "'300' is racist" theory?
It's nice to agree. -
Tom Cruise will live forever! Even if he doesn't go the Vanilla Sky route and freeze himself, the madman will no doubt be abducted by his alien Gods and become a Prince in whatever faraway world they reside in.
-
were Greek right? Not American/English? So how is this an anti-Iranian movie?
-
It's nice to know what turns you on.
-
I don't suppose it crossed your (and the other 'Bond is Gay' guy) mind that that scene might appeal to people who fancy men who AREN'T other men - you know, like woMEN?!
It takes a certain kind of man to read gayness into a scene when it isn't really there... don't be afraid, just go with your true nature. -
rather watch these than endless Bourne Unlimiteds
-
To: Lemming I know my history...and I am a big fan of Greeks (maybe not the Spartans per say, but the Greek peoples over all, yes), but as cast in the movie, there was a distinct pro-Euro, pro-western theme, that was anti anybody other than that.
To: PawPrintThe problem with 300 is that it had brown or dark colored villains and white colored villains, but while it had white colored heroes, it did not have brown or dark colored heroes...a very interesting and intentional omission??? -
Casino Royale was one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. I miss the REAL *cinematic* Bond, the suave super agent who likes his martinis shaken and not stirred, wields campy gadgets and battles over-the-top megalomaniacs bent on world domination. Bond films are SUPPOSED to be over the top. Daniel Craig and company sucked the fun right out of the frandchise by pursuing a "realistic" direction. Frankly, this new creative team deserved to be taken down a peg; Craig's ego was out of control. The Brosnon films were superior because they encapsulated all of 007's mofits, and I eagerly await the day when the Bond I know and love returns to battle evil on the silver screen.
-
but now Bond is just a pathetic cliche. Spy movies are supposed to reflect the times and fears of the audience. This is why Bourne is relevant with the audience. Bourne was a tragic figure with no place of rest or peace of mind just moments of sadness before explosion of rage. When yopu watch Bourne even tiny expression of body language (or lack of ) convey something to the audience. But with 007 secret squirrel we get bloody sharks with laser beam eyes and over the top glamour models being "nuclear scientists". Just trashy tasteless rubbish. Jason Bourne is the main man now.
-
he nailed it....his Bond had brains, muscle and Humor-something sorely lacking in Craig....
-
Almost every new Bond film features at some point a complaint that the new director can't do the action right. Unless they've changed things completely, every Bond film since Goldfinger has had a dedicated second unit team to do all the action. The same team that did all of the Brosnan action sequences (more or less) did the Casino Royale action scenes and, I suspect, the Quantum of Solace ones. The only real exception was Die Another Die, where the director did more of the action than usual and had a greater say in how they were edited. And we all know how that turned out.
-
Try to use references people outside of London pubs can understand! :(
-
Seeing as how you're the only two to reply to my message with eerily similar responses to give in to your ways, well look no further for your kindred spirits with each other! May one day if you're fortunate enough to be caught in a gay sex ring with some politicians that some director will make the life story of you two and your by-chance-meeting on a internet talkback! Kind of like that tom hanks/meg ryan romantic comedy. I'll leave you two to set your first date.
-
Firstly, well done on remaining civil and calm despite my insults; I was in a bad place then.
Secondly, the filmmakers were trying to put the point across that (in the context of the film) the Persian army was multi-racial showing how much of the world Xerxes had conquered. King Leonidas is a Greek being portrayed by a white actor; given that most Greeks look ethnically the same, it makes sense that all the other Spartans be portrayed by white actors. You're reading far too much into it. -
Nowt wrong with a bit of healthy man-on-man assfuckery if the situation presents itself; I just don't go out of my way trying to see gayness in films when it isn't there.
And remember - it's not gay if you're the one doing the fucking, plus, in the dark, all arseholes feel the same.
Sweet Dreams! x -
Lame comeback. Try again when you've developed a wit.
-
What has Bond become? Bond is NOT supposed to have a TESB film!
-
Presented by Joanna Lumley. It was all about the creation of bond. from flemings time at admiralty through to his time at the telegraph. his meetings with Charles Fraser Smith. the inspiration for q. How fleming lost someone he loved during the blits. to his marriage to anne and how he eventually considered killing off bond. and how bond tooks its toll on fleming and his marriage. Annie hated bond and all his sexist attituteds to women. which were flemings reflections of UK attitudes towards women. Bond has stood the test of time due to Flemings exhaustive research, his attention to detail and above all bonds magnetic personality. Fleming died on his beloved St.georges Golf Course aged 57. There were other fascinating things in the documentary. flemings creation is very vague. He loves women and is attracted to them. But he is a sexist dinosaur, as m put it and a relic of the cold war. when doing research for goldfinger. Fleming reasearched all about gold. even down to golds smell. There was one character, the female bond villain with the poisoinous boot blade, who was based on the notorious female nazi camp guard.
-
Will avoid.
-
I'm sorry, but this is not Bond. It just isn't. Casino Royale was trying way too hard to be Bourne, and it sounds like this one is too. Bond is campy, he has gadgets, and supervillans. All that stuff they worked so hard to get rid of, that was Bond. Maybe it was outdated, but it was Bond, it was the same the whole way through. What ruined Bond was Austin Powers. When someone finally made a joke out of it, and people could see the flaws rather than see past them (Christmas Jones anyone?) That was the end of Bond. I'd have rather they ended it there, because this is just more run of the mill generic action crap. I'd have probably enjoyed it much more if they hadn't used the name Bond, or much of the Bond elements like M or Moneypenny. Bond used to be cool, now he's a thug, with a revenge fetish. Fuck Quantum of Solace. You ruined a series even the lothesome Timothy Dalton couldn't kill.
-
Yeah, not everything is the Star Wars trilogy. I seriously doubt this is a Bond "Empire Strikes Back". There are too many things wrong with that analogy. Try again, Harry.
Wasn't the first one fucking bleak enough? I can see the producers and distributers in their committee meetings "So, they liked all the bleak stuff in the first one, eh? And they liked Bond acting like a thug? Great. Don't mess with success. Double helpings of both for the second movie!" Fuck. Me. -
doesnt mean anything. It was line that was discovered in one flemings notebooks. They allowed bond to get bloated. Now they stripped bond back. I actually dont mind. a gadget less bond. bond has not been the same since des Lyllwellyn died. This will make money. however, I have a note of caution for the makers. When they decide to make a bond film with a all new story. the wheels will come off the bond franchise. they could make the higson books. but wouldnt that be like anthony horrowits all over again.
-
"Quantum of Solace" is the title of a Bond short story, from one collection of Bond short stories. It actually was about Bond sitting around with another dude, and being told a story about a husband and wife having marital difficulties, while Bond smoked cigars and sipped Cognac.
-
I think those are the only Ian Fleming titles left. So I guess we know what the next twp movies will be called.
-
Bored me to tears...I'm with the other posters who have coined the "The Bonde Identity." I'm certainly not in the mood for another.
-
Hmn?
-
There's "007 In New York" as well. Which COULD be interesting, if they kept the movie entirely on Manhattan.
-
Campbell went on the record to say that Barbara Brocolli wanted him to do quantum of solace but he turned down the offer. and in all fairness you can see his point. He didnt want to straight jacketed.
-
and that is precisely what the brocollis plan was to launch for the 21st century. Campbell fit into their plans. EON offered campbell a lot of money to stay but you can see that he felt in away that his career would have been straight jacketed. With the relaunch out of way, campbell felt his job was done. The same directors have made more then one bond. Campbell may come back. if they make a New york bond film. they should hire paul greengrass. or not cause with Barbara brocolli the director will have to do what they are told. Greengrass sounds like a very combatative man.
-
hitchs the birds. screw that one up and he will have bird shit all over him for the rest of his career. and this is the same guy who did beyond borders. with brangelina and clive owen zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
