TOY STORY II images... including EMPEROR ZURG!!!!

Published at:  Jun 29, 1999 2:37:15 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. As most of you know, I've been hot on TOY STORY II since way back when it was a straight to video deal. I read the script and wrote this review back in February of 1998. I've been dying to see more and more on this film ever since then because... personally I believe the script for TOY STORY II is better, cooler and way funner than the original... And TOY STORY is in my top 5 movies of this decade... Hell... I have a six foot Buzz Lightyear cardboard cutout at the foot of my bed, and a Woody hanging on the wall above the Basil Wolverton pin and the Cat In The Hat doll whilst hanging below my Tibetan blacklight poster of Shiva. I love TOY STORY.

Now one of the adventures I have never written up for you folks is my journey into the bowels of PIXAR back after the A BUG'S LIFE premiere. Why didn't I write it then? Well... Since most of the 'news' was A BUGS LIFE news, I felt it would have just promoted A BUGS LIFE and it would have served as de facto advertising, so instead I sat on the knowledge and... well... over time I'll tell bits and pieces of it.

Today I received in the mail the infamous PIXAR stockholders report. This is strange because... well, I'm not a stockholder in PIXAR (unfortunately... it's gonna skyrocket with this TOY STORY II release this Fall) and when I got the tube I thought.... Oh Cool Oh Cool, what I get what I get what I get?

One poster was a big frame from A BUG'S LIFE of Flick on the Dandelion. Beautiful image, but what was the other stuff. There was a pamphlet on the state of the company. How much money they made, how much their taxes were, how much money they made off toys, news that TOY STORY 2 doesn't count on their Disney 5 film deal because it's a sequel, though A BUG'S LIFE and MONSTERS, INC. do. Also that there is a mysterious film after MONSTERS, INC, that they won't even hint at. The report talked about how the wild success of all the animated films from last fall/winter, just proved the gaining strength of the animated film medium. Then heralded how it looked like they were the only animated film being released this fall. (Though I could've sworn that is when Dreamwork's ROAD TO EL DORADO is aiming for a FALL release (though IMDB says March 2000)

Then there was... the other poster. And folks... I nearly shat myself. It was the cast of various toy characters from TOY STORY 2!!! Including EMPEROR ZURG!!!! I'm sooooo jazzed by this. Unfortunately the poster is much larger than my scanner allows, and the digital camera just doesn't pick up the lovely level of detail that I would like to show you the images at. BUT... I'll do my best. Now a WARNING! If you do not wish to see the looks of these new characters... CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO THE MAIN PAGE!!! or continue down the page here...

Now for the images... First up is THE PROSPECTOR...

Next up is Mr & Mrs POTATO HEAD!

The female toy in the Woody line of characters... Jessie...

And now... it's Buzz Lightyear and Emperor ZURG!!!!!

And lastly... here's a shot that I took with the Digital Camera. I'll need to get a good place to lay this thing out flat and well... I don't know. I think it'll be impossible for me to get the whole thing scanned right. Well, I did my best. Btw... The horse is named BULLSEYE and the penguin is named Wheezy!

    OUTSTANDING!!!

    by moriarty

    Hey, all...

I've had a chance to read this script, too, and I love it. I think it's smart, funny, and a great commentary on the state of toy "collecting" in this country versus just loving them for what they are... toys. These character designs are great, and of course, I loathe Mr. Knowles with a burning intensity because he owns that poster and I don't. I will get you, Big Red. Don't sleep with both eyes closed, man. Do you hear the pitter-patter of mutant henchmen feet drawing closer? Heheheheheheh...

    "Moriarty" out.

    The Toy Story 2 trailer

    by spike lee

I saw the trailer for Toy Story 2 on Big Daddy. (BTW, Big Daddy is horrible, but better than the Waterboy. Where is your pride Adam Sandler, I demand another loose cannon like the Billy Madison film.) Anyway, the trailer was lame and had like these green alien squeak toys say "Toy Story 2" and then Woody and Buzz bantered against a black background. My guess is that the trailer was Disney's idea, Pixar could do 110% better than that.

    The Emperor has no cloths!

    by alex rogan

If you can make a scan from the
    horses head to Buzz's shoulder,
then the 4 scans can be pasted
    together into one large image.

Also, the cowgirl looks more like
a kid than a woman. If this isn't
the final design I hope they give
    her more... uh, curves. Also,
    the Emperor doesn't look
    half as cool as Buzz
so perhaps they could fix that up
    too.

    But, it's probably too late.

    Nice images!

    by the graduate

Super-freaking cool! I love these new characters, particularly Jessie! Do I detect a love triangle forming between her, Woody, and Bo Peep? Could happen . . . or maybe he could rope both of them into a "ho down," if you know what I mean . . . seriously, though, TOY STORY is my favorite animated film ever because it has great characters and some real heart in it. I can't wait to see this sequel, particularly since I keep hearing that the story is as good or better than the original! To the person who grumbled above about the trailer before BIG DADDY: that was more of a teaser, and I think it worked well! First off, those little green guys were on the funniest things about the original. And Woody and Buzz's antipathy was the foundation of the story. So their banter indicates to me that they're still sharp. Don't worry; the release date is coming up quickly, so by the end of summer or early fall we'll probably get a great full-length trailer with lots of eye candy andfunny bits!

    Hopeful but restrained...

    by prankster

Well, what can I say? I'm looking forward to this one, of course. But, not to be a gloomy gus, but I have to point out that no matter how good the script is, in an animated film that's only half the battle. Animation is the only medium in which the visuals are AT LEAST as important as the script. That's why Tarzan was a pretty good movie despite its' crummy, formulaic sccript. The animation is a vital part of the storytelling. Now, chances are good that if anyone can match the high standards of this script with great visuals, it's PIXAR. But I'm a little dubious about this "better than the original" stuff...BETTER than TOY STORY?!? The most F*#&$IN' BRILLIANT animated movie of the decade, and my second favourite movie after Fantasia? Doubtful. Still, here's hoping...

Zurg looks like a clear homage to Tytla's demon (rising from the mountain) in Fantasia. Just another cool thing that animators do to tribute each other - watch the Disney a-holes sue Pixar!

    Pixar rules!!

    by dr. vee

Everyone oughtta consider buying a few shares of Pixar (PIXR). We've held a very small stake for a few years, and each year Pixar sends us something totally cool in the mail. This year we got the 2 posters and letters from Steve Jobs; last year they sent us a video of the awesome animated short "Geri's Game" and some ABL cards; a couple of years back we received another bitchin' Toy Story Poster.

I'm not a big time investor or nuthin', but there is something kinda cool in having a stake in a company like Pixar, and my kids get some neato gifts each year. We're gonna mount this years' posters on a cardboard backing and hang 'em in the kids' room...

    by pwong5

Last year I took my first dip in buying stocks and the first one on my list was PIXAR. Since then, the stock price has gone up and down and although I've been tempted to sell many times, the annual report from PIXAR which I received last friday was a sure sign from above to hold onto the stock until the end. The posters are beautifully made and of good quality. I even like the letterhead for each of the forms Harry described (it's got different characters from each of the movies standing alongside the PIXAR name.) Why can't all companies send out reports like this???

I HAVE SEEN GOD AND HIS NAME IS JOHN LASSITER. Okay not really but the guy is a god on earth and he makes awesome movies. I wish I could get inside his head and see his imagination for a few hours. That would be cool. This movie is going to rule. Any movie with a teaser that cool deserves an Oscar or something. It is greatness. Talk to yall later.

    by the big t

I hate to say this unless you have been to disney world in the last few months I saw Emperor Zurg first in the new Buzz Lightyear laser shoot up ride which is fun as hell. Also he talked during the ride and it was one of those voices that has a saturday cartoon evil quality to it like "I will get you next time Buzz Lightyear hahahaha" I have no idea who is doing the voice but i couldnt pick up any famous voices.

"What is it?!? What is it?!?" - Rexx

    by room_a113

The above quote is from Rexx in Toy Story, and Harry if you read this and you remember Rexx's emotions at that point, you know how I'm feeling. I'm beeegggging you to give us the story of your trip to Pixar!! Pleaaaase! Did you learn anything about Monsters Inc? Did you see where they're building their new studios? Did you get to meet Jobs? LASSETER? Catmull?

I'm a Pixar shareholder and I received 4 of the poster sets (I own Pixar in multiple accounts). I already gave one away, and I'm framing another, but I might consider selling and unopened package to the highest bidder!

    "Only animated film this fall"??

    by chowlifung

While the Miramax release of Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime)may come late in the fall (Oct 29th) to an initially small (microscopically small at the moment) number of theatres, it will be another animated movie out there in theatres besides TS II this fall. Miramax seems to enjoy releasing foreign films in their hands in a limited way and then expanding as time goes on so maybe MH has a chance. Although its unfortunate that such a beautifully done film will most likely get killed by such a giant as TS II, maybe american movie watchers will suprise everyone.

    by inwood

I remember seeing Toy Story for the first time: I was numb! Pixar is the most wonderful thing to happen to animation, and cinema for that matter, since... I don't even know what!! A Bug's Life was even better and TS2 looks to to top even ol' Flick's adventures. I say BRAVO to John Lassiter and EVERYONE at Pixar! "Bravo!" You make cinema a happier place. Thank you.

    by irie

I saw "Mononoke," and it sucked big time. "Toy Story 2" looks great. The other Fall animated release will be Brad Bird's "The Iron Giant." It's being released too early to be "competition," but if Warners does it right, who knows, they may just push it through the entire season!

Nobody, not even Harry knows this!!!!

    by hitechtoon

    Hi folks!

I have to agree that Toy Story 2 looks utterly awesome. As the original movie is my all-time favorite, I can't wait to see it come Thanksgiving weekend. For sure I will be camped outside the theatre -- maybe the El Capitan, who knows??

Anyways, for the story nobody but only a few people knows, about the sequel. Someone with no connection whatsoever to Pixar wrote a screenplay for the Toy Story sequel right after the original movie premiered in the theaters, titled "Toy Story Continued" and got Don Rickles' agent to handle it, as Mr. Rickles would have had a much bigger role as Mr. Potato Head in TS Continued, if Pixar and Disney had taken an interest in the script.

As far as I know, all the original characters from the movie are in TS Continued, with the introduction of a major new character who supposedly leads Woody and Buzz into a wild adventure. That's about all I know about Toy Story Continued, except that it was completed and copyrighted in early '96, and that it was turned away by both Disney and Pixar because of their policy against accepting unsolicited scripts/ideas. How do I know about this? I'm a friend of a friend of the screenwriter; my friend, knowing what a HUGE fan of Toy Story I am, told me about the project and that she had read the script herself. She said it was an exciting, fast-paced story but refused to divulge any info about the new character or plot, etc., etc. That's all folks -- to infinity and beyond!!!

The first Toy Story somehow managed to excel on all levels, and I'm hoping (with more faith now that I've seen these shots) that lightning can strike twice. If anyone can make it so, it's Pixar and John Lasseter. BTW, my fave TS-1 gag? Mr. Picasso Head. Knocked me on my arse.
