Paramount begins to release images from JJ's STAR TREK - pick up new Entertainment Weekly!

Hey folks, Harry here... The cover of the new Entertainment Weekly has Kirk & Spock v.2.0 on the cover doing their best "strike a pose" - but inside the issue is the real treats - actual shots from the film. It is strange, it feels like a million years ago when JJ showed me the brief snippets of STAR TREK that he was willing to share, but looking at the below still of Sylar as SPOCK - I can't help but remember just how perfect he was in the scenes I saw. Quinto nailed the Nimoy thing. Had the eyebrow gymnastics down and the slight wry irony of observing these Humans down perfectly. I just can't wait to see the next trailer which will really give everyone an idea of what this film is. HOWEVER, for you STAR TREK junkies - pick up the new ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, as it's the first step to lifting the veil of secrecy off the direction of this beloved franchise. by JethroBodine

Why does every recent re-do of classic characters, especially really iconic characters have to have a costume with a scaly appearance? Spock's print pattern in that pic definately has the new "trendy" scaly look, as did Supes in Superman Returns, and so did Spidey in all 3 Spiderman movies. Seriously. What's with the fuckin scales? Enough already!

Sure, he has to be sprayed by an alien flower. or begin de-evolving to an earlier savage Vulcan state, or, like some one above mentioned, he could be going through pan far (every 7 years), or he could have a slimy plastic creature on his neck, or he could have that perspiration drunk virus, or Kirk pretended that Spock killed him again and this time he's pissed instead of happy to see him. Or maybe some other young Vulcan disappointed him and sided with a cabal of rouge federation and Klingon's. Spock is full of emotion, that's the point. He just has to suppress it all the time, so there are a number of things in the universe that can set the guy off. You guys are unbelievably petty, the pictures JUST came out!!!

i don't think of the trend as 'scales', but costume designers trying to add a texture or also a 'tech' feeling to future fabrics, or those of the superhero costumes. it was like spiderman's costume was itself made up of a flexible, modular, weblike patterned fabric. the trek suits and others are going for hi tech future fashion- it makes sense. that fabric probably stretches, insulates, cools, absorbs, breathes...etc. PLUS it's more visually interesting than 10 feet of spandex or polyester on the screen.

Looks like an expensive fan film

    by careyleefisher

Wow, this looks terrible! Hate everything I have seen regarding the new "Star Trek". Hated the teaser trailer, hate the concept and now that I have actually seen stills from the movie I have to say this looks like a really expensive fan web series. Did somebody on the "Hidden Frontiers" suddenly hit the lottery and put all the money back into their internet series? I mean, come on, does anyone really see Kirk and Spock here? Has anyone ever seen the Halloween costume contests in Wizard magazine? That is exactly what that cover of EW looks like. Quinto looks lost and confused and almost plastic on the cover and Pine does not make me think of Kirk. No offense to Quinto or Pine but I do think they will come to regret taking these roles on once this film is rejected by "Star Trek" fans. I predict that this film will open to a decent but not spectacular opening weekend and then be quickly dispatched by whatever opens the following weekend. This thing has disaster written all over it for Paramount. You think "Star Trek" was dead before? Just wait until this disaster opens. I know that part of JJ Abrams pitch is that "This is not your father's "Star Trek". However, what that hack fails to understand is our Father's "Star Trek" is what we do want. However, our Father's "Star Trek" is in the past. If you do not want your Father's "Star Trek" then , by all means, move forward not back. I will take my father's "Star Trek" over "Star Trek 90210" anytime.

Whose bright idea was this? Hey, Abrams, sometimes less is more. No need to overkill the uniforms. This whole things reeks of a total retcon of everything about the orginal series. I'll pass!

Watch it again. There's only three seasons it won't take you long and i think you will be surprised. It seems most folks i talk to, who dis the old series, haven't actually seen the great episodes in a long time and all they seem to remember about the show is Kirk smooching on alien babes. That's not the show. Sure, Kirk kissed an alien babe or two, but no more than Riker (he had seven seasons of alien babe kissing). The old series had great stories, written by great writers, some legendary Science-fiction authors. Go to, they have a bunch of old episodes free and high quality.

Is this a Prequel or a Reboot?

    by codymr

I remember reading about this project a while ago and my impression is that it was a retelling/reboot of the original Trek and characters and that it did not exist in the established cannon. For example I have read that Chekov appears in this film even though he was not seen in the original series until season 2. Does anyone know?

  • Oct. 15, 2008, 6:27 p.m. CST

So finally we can see for ourselves

    by Geekgasm

Its a REBOOT. They might have said so in the first place. As a REBOOT, I can go into it taking it at face value. But all that "oh its so respectful and revenrential of the canon", "oh, it fits right into the pre-existing lore", blah blah blah, that was obviously a load of bullshit from Abrams, Orci, and the other one. THat bridge set looks like an Australian's nightmare. So its the beginning of "J.J. Abrams presents: A Version of Star Trek", and not some kind of continuation of Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek". Fine. One might have said so in the first pklace instead of trying to sell everybody a phony bill of goods.

  • Oct. 15, 2008, 6:30 p.m. CST

    the idea behind chekov is....

    by menstrual_blitz

...the same explanation they gave for that continuity problem in Wrath of Kahn (how did Kahn recognize Chekov, if he wasn't a crew member while Kahn was aboard): he was always on the Enterprise in season one, just not working on the bridge. No one ever said his character had just arrived by season 2. Plus, you guys are way more sticklers for cannon then the creators ever where. In the first series they had multiple names for the federation , multiple histories and back stories, often contradicting each other. It just a show (movie).

.... do anything but stare resolutely ahead and emote nothing! Please. If Nimoy's portrayal did anything, it's show that Spock feels, and works to remain logical. And, bitches, Spock emoted quite a bit in the original Pilot. He also tells Starfleet to "go to hell" at the end of VI. So don't bitch and moan because Sylar looks kinda pissed. Maybe, you know, there's a good *story* reason for it. But you'll prolly skip the movie because you assumed some shit and you'll never know. Geez. Lighten up. We get short skirts and a guy that Nimoy has done nothing but praise publicly. Be happy we didn't get Jack Black as Spock or something.

"In the first series they had multiple names for the federation , multiple histories and back stories, often contradicting each other." That's because they were MAKING IT ALL UP FROM STRATCH on the original show. There's over 40 years of ironing out all the wrinkles, most of which was done by fans anyway. Somebody else has already done all the heavy lifting. These folks obviously wanted to make a movie that's their take on the material. Fine. Just say "we're re-making Star Trek! Isn't that great?" and don't smother everybody in bullshit for 9 months with all that "oh its a prequel ... oh its not a reboot ... well not exactly ... we're so respectful of the show's intricate backstory ... finally you'll see how the crew came together" - whatever. This movie is going to bear as much resemblance to the original Star Trek as The Phantom menace bore to the original Star Wars i.e. not too fucking much.

    by performingmonkey

The stupid cover shot aside, I am relieved at how good the crew and bridge look. The uniforms are right and the bridge has a very cheesy old sci-fi movie style but greatly enhanced with hi-tech. Spock, Bones and Scotty look good. Not sure about Kirk but Chris Pine supposedly knocked it out the park. Quinto aside (who HAS to look like Nimoy's Spock seeing as they both appear here), the performances are way more important than the look of the characters. Thank god too because the guy playing Sulu is nothing like him, and again you don't think of Kirk when you look at Pine (hopefully we will once we've seen the movie!). They certainly look young but that's the whole point, this is set BEFORE TOS FFS! Hopefully we'll get a sequel and they will have grown into the parts.

    the BRIDGE... is...

    by bma2192

WELL... it reminds me of a scene from CHICAGO with all those dancers...which might be cool if this were a musical-- the SHAPE of the original bridge is so ICONIC--and the only recognizable thing in the bridge pic is the captains chair-- and who thought that lining the entire room with ROWS of stage lights was a good idea?? Sorry-Im rooting for this to be a great movie... but that BRIDGE looks like a ROOM-- a lower budget set piece-- just hope Im getting a bad impression from a partial pic so maybe Im totally wrong... I expected the "tech" to be updated... but wow-- lining up a bunch of flat screens side by side across the back of a square room isnt convincing me to suspend my disbelief-- of course Im ranting and Im sure a lot of work went into this... but this is my childhood ship and we're all gonna be picky-- so drop us all some bigger pics to convince us:)

Arguably MI:3 was the best in the series. What killed the franchise was Tom Cruise acting nuts, to the extent that Paramount has been considering doing a new MI movie without him. JJ is hit or miss. As I said about, I expect he'll make an entertaining movie. I don't expect it will be "Star Trek". Oh, and what do you call a Vulcan one-night-stand? Pon Farr and away!

    The bridge...

    by Kelvington

Oh dear god, I had high hopes for this, and from the statements of people who had seen it. Kevin Smith in particular, I thought the bridge would be... THE BRIDGE, the iconic round multi-station clean images from our memories or at least something close. Are we sure JJ was watching Star Trek when he made this set? And not Buck Rogers? Or Stargate?

This is NOT the bridge I grew up with, this is NOT the bridge I thought would appear and by God it's NOT the bridge I can appreciate.

I suspect next fall Stan and Cartmen will be doing an episode where Roddenberry's corpse gets raped by JJ and the writers.

    by TallBoy66

Okay, yes, the timeline will be changed by Nero and Spock traveling back, so by the end of the movie we have the JJ-Trek-verse so they can do whatever they want. However, if the movie is about thier first meeting, and if these events happened regardless of mucking with the timeline, then Spock couldn't have Ponn Farr'ed and flipped out and tried to kill Kirk because then they would have been like "Oh, yeah, Spock did this years ago, he's just horny" in Amok Time. We have no idea what is happening in the Spock photo, maybe he is not pissed, maybe he is just intensely focused on some sort of meld-thing with the captain, who knows. He showed emotion all the time in TOS, just not intentionally. And he showed more in the pilot...There WAS a short outfit in one photo, so stop your griping....So what about the bridge being high tech. Current effects just show the bridge better (same as the ORIGINAL explanation for the Klingon change before the DS9 and Enterprise writers got cute about it)....The cast is young, they should be (with the possible exception of Bones and Scotty although I forget the canon age for bones)....Time will tell for the rest of it.

Mission Impossible 3 was one of the most fun times I've had in the cinema i recent years. The action sequences were ACTUALLY FUCKING EXCITING. The Vatican sequence was fun. The bridge sequence was jaw-dropping. The performance from Cruiser was committed. The performance from Philip SH was kick-ass. It was better than CASINO ROYALE. It wasn't trying to be BOURNE. At the very least, it proved that in STAR TREK, JJ is going to do his utmost to deliver thrills and spills.

Open Letter To Hollywood: Stop With The Prequels Please!!!!

    by Media Messiah

We need to see the future universe of Star Trek, hopefully something that can be as sweeping in terms of the epic scope as the first two original Star Wars films, not this step down to prequels which have proven themselves to be off-putting at best, and poor marketing gimmicks in the least. I have never seen a successful prequel before, not one, as they all lack a spirited reason to be, known as purpose. Is such a thing possible, making a good prequel; Yes??? But is it something that is worth investing in when they, prequels, fail to advance the over all story??? Absolutely not!!!

The future of Star Trek is to be found in the future, not in the past. Move on please!!! And next time, hand Star Trek over to Joss Whedon, and give him a handsome budget in order to finally give Star Trek some much needed scope and grandeur so t can compete at the box office for once!!!

Forget EVERY SINGLE TREKKIE ALIVE for just one second

    by DOGSOUP

This will either blow up in the mainstream because everybody in it is just so dreamy (Heh, 14 year old girls fawning over Karl Urban) OR it will fail miserably because the mainstream will avoid it like herpes because the Fans freak them out. This movie will sink or swim based on how the kinds of people who have never seen a star trek show react to it. Jesus titty fuck what am I saying? You guys will give it Spider Man breaking numbers opening weekend because you'll see it 15 times so you can debate time travel continuity and the variances on the movie Enterprise and the OS Enterprise and how your childhoods were raped. Then a sequal then a prequal then a sequal to a prequal then a sequal sequal to ad nauseum. Get used to this crew because youse guyses are going to have them stick around for the next 20 years. If your going to make a religion out of it have the balls to actually declare its a religion and start churches. In conclusion, Things Portland Oregon has in its favor: Chuck Palahnuik, Suicide Girls, Dark Horse Comics, Will Vinton Studios, Hawthorne Girls, and The Watchmen playing in its entirety for the first time in front of an audience tomorrow night.

i dont really get the big deal, kirk often wore this green vest thingy on the original show along with the more famous yellow shirt. so this black top is probably their version of the green one. and the bridge looks pretty cool, totally not what i expected but while this is the past for Trek, its still the future for us so things shouldnt be big ass buttons and switches. its 2008 not 1968. granted its just one picture but its sorta funny how this bridge looks more advanced than the Enterprise one (as in the show Enterprise, before morons read the wrong way). lol

    by Pizza The Hut

The actors, the ship exterior, bridge set, costumes, and music. The rest of the show could really suck and often times did. Hopefully they haven't Fukd with the look of the Enterprise as much as they have the bridge, otherwise it could get really stinky. Costumes look OK though.

    Belly-aching whiners

    by rotgut1

To those belly-aching whiners out there: it's fine to have an opinion, I am all for that. But think about this. Which would you rather have: A) Another half-baked attempt at "Star Trek" via another Trek spin-off featuring a bunch of copy-cat characters with 1/100th the soul of what made TOS so wonderful OR B) A TOS-era movie with original TOS characters recast with talented actors and an updated, reimagined look which may or may not meet your exact specifications It's not like they made the bridge some giant, stadium-sized arena or something. It's not like they made the bridge the size of a Toyota Yaris. So there's some creative license with texture and color and lighting. I say embrace change - sometimes change is fun! Besides, we haven't seen the whole thing yet - a full bridge shot might look really great! Think about it. After several miserable, failed, lame Trek projects, we are getting an honest, "from the heart" attempt at TOS in 2009 and the prospects of it actually being better-than-decent are looking good. Weight the pros and cons and stop your belly-aching because a lot of us are sick of it.

    Don't mess with what works

    by The StarWolf

Rotgut1 - one of Hokeywood's biggest problems is its insistence on messing with what works until it doesn't. OK, that's true of the computer industry as well. Point being, one of the most 'magic' moments in the entire TREK franchise was in the Next Fabrication episode RELICS when former Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott - who'd spent decades in a transporter matter stream - tells the Enterprise 'D' computer to set up a holodeck program. "The Bridge of the Enterprise." "Please specify which version." "NCC-1701, no bloody 'A', 'B', 'C' or 'D'." "Program complete. You may enter when ready." And Scotty does and, as the doors open, we're back in time on *The Bridge*, complete with blinkie winkies and sound effects. We were home. Unfortunately, Abram didn't get that and, just because it was good enough for 40 years doesn't mean we should use it. Let's just forget it all and go with a whole new look and feel. Reminds me of a famous restaurant here which had been booked solid, 'reservation only' for about 35 years, until it was bought out and the new owners decided it needed a makeover. A few months later they filed for bankruptcy. Some people never learn. You don't mess with what works.

    by EverythingEverywhereStinks

Well all you "I never liked Trek" people out there must have rock hard boners for all this crap that surfaced on the net in the last 24 hours. That ridiculous bridge in the photo looks like it's made of plastic. I expect to see Gil Gerard and Twiki in the background of that photo. Jar Jar Abrams could have saved everyone a lot of time if he had simply been man enough at the beginning of all this to tell us he was reimaginging Star Trek to the same degree that Battlestar Galactica was, instead of stringing us along trying to make us believe he knew what he was doing. It is amusing to see though that the harmless, nerdy Star Trek fan will be replaced by the hide-behind-my-ISP, hyperagressive, destroy all opposition with vulgarity Star Trek fan. I'm sure Gene would be proud that Jar Jar Abrams has made it acceptable for Star Trek fans to be blood thirsty assholes. Have at it Space Monkeys!

    The bridge

    by DreadPirateRoberts

While I totally agree with 'StarWolf' about the moment in Relics, Abrams is walking a fine line here. First, the old bridge looks lower tech than something we could build today, let along in the 23rd century. So he needs to respect the old show mythology (which it looks like he is attempting more than I thought he would with the uniforms and such) but not alienate a mainstream audience.
And as for not messing with something that works, remember that TOS did not "work" in the end from a mainstream success perspective. I loved it, but it was canceled after two seasons, and got a 1 year lower budget reprieve. It became beloved AFTER it's original death. And the later TOS movies did not respect the old bridge, uniforms, alien makeup, or lots of other things, so this is hardly unprecidented.

  • Oct. 16, 2008, 11:21 a.m. CST

Having actually watched when it first aired...

    by crankyoldguy

...I have high hopes, even if I've been lukewarm about Abram's TV work - Alias, Lost, though haven't seen Fringe. Maybe I'd like lost if I'd got on board from the beginning, but every time I attempted viewing, it was a case of I don't care a whit about these folks, what else is on. Still, the general look of the uniforms, even the bridge chair, taps into the 8, 9-year-old in me that watched the original series when it first aired, not the syndicated re-runs. If the bridge isn't an exact replica, it doesn't bother me. DS9 and Enterprise did those tributes. Clearly, this is a re-boot/re-imagining with nods to that original show. Remember, Shatner was mighty young when he started on the show; we've just all grown up with him, some of you knew his older movie Kirk better than the TV version. Ditto for Spock, etc. Sure, there's lots of sentiment and personal memories tied up with Trek, especially the original program. But so far, there's a lot in these photos that look right, not wrong. All the already-hate-it children on AICN are no surprise. But I don't want to see any of that "raped my childhood" crapola as I really did see TOS as a child (hence my being old; I've been cranky since my 20s) and this is no "raping." I think it will do well and hope it does well or all we'll be left with are those "few" hours of Trek available - how many hundreds of episodes is that from the various series?

    by Friendo

Reimagining or updating the Bridge design is fine with me. I just don't like what they've done here (assuming this IS the Enterprise bridge and not an Academy training bridge). Those rows of dressing table lights, the overall whiteness and brightness (more like a Sickbay ambience) feels all wrong. And the CLUTTER. There are cues they could take from the TOS bridge: simple, elegant, functional, iconic, abbreviated, with BLACK, GREY AND RED... none of that is evident here. So it feels completely off. The only thing is the captain's chair. I know the TOS bridge tech was crude and primative by today's standards, but what I always liked about it and what I still like about it was how abbreviated the tech was. A few rows of colored lights and buttons, a viewer thing for Spock... you could operated an entire starship with a row of unmarked buttons and damn few viewscreens or displays... and the bridge was usually a rather dark brooding place with indirect lighting. This photo looks, as someone else said, "like an Australian's Nightmare". - ha ha ha ha - The casting and the uniforms look good though. And some of the dashboard tech that was leaked earlier (I think it was a shuttle craft) really had that clunky '60s tech look nailed down. I'm reserving judgement for now. - - - - Oh, and speaking of homoerotic, did anyone notice that Kirk and Spock's tits are touching on the Entertainment Weakly cover???? HAHAHHAH AH AHA HAH AHA

    by Asaraiel

You idiots bitching about the Bridge do realize that you're seeing very little of it, right? The full pic has Spock up close so its from his station. You see Sulu in his CHAIR, but not the forward stations at all. You see Kirk, in a chair not too far departed, Sulu in a chair, and the area behind Kirk. That's not much. And certainly not enough to say that they've totally gone away from the original core idea. Obviously, since Spock is where he is in the full pic, it's a round, mid-sized room with stations lining the back wall in a curve, and a forward set of stations with a raised command chair. That's a fucking Star Trek bridge. The end. Every show has featured that basic design with minor variations here and there. Stop bitching.

Since the movie starts off during the NEXT GENERATION era, they should show Picard and the Enterprise try to stop the renegade Romulans, but are unable to stop them from going back in time, luckly Nimoy Spock is on hand to try to save the day. As for why the bridge looks different, who's to say that when the renegade Romulans went back in time that they didn't destroy the original Enterprise being built in space, and that's why this "new" enterprise is being built on Earth (so it can't be attacked) and that the look of the inside is different now because of the renegade time bandits. Star Trek is wasted on its fans.

    by JumpinJehosaphat

This thread is what I would point to in defense of the eradication of all sci-fi geeks. Why would you whine about details out of context? Oh, that's right: you know better than anyone else. Just you against the world. "Spock would never blah blah blah", and "Enterprise would never look like blah blah blah". If a phrase like this has ever been said or typed by you, you have the joyless existence everyone thinks you have. Wretched nerd people! I should have the theater to myself, at least. I'm sure some of you will show up anyway, you hypocritical bastard sacs.

    Context my ass

    by ominus

ok i ll accept that we have to see in what context is the pic of the ready-to-kill young spock.he is younger,he cant control his emotions etc.ok lets accept it,althought i dont understand this argument.spock is supposed to be a half vulcan, alf NORMAL-human,not michael mayers..
but concerning the bridge why should i wait for the context? it doesnt resemble at all the original ncc-1701 enterprise,it doesnt resemble the bridge of a semi-militaristic spaceship in a movie where speace battles and human confrontations are expected,it doesnt even resemble a well designed bridge for a spaces<>hip.i mean what the fuck are the black joysticks for?.is the crew playing atari games during its break? is this the context are we talking about? that retrogaming exists in the future too?
anyway this movie and watchme will be the crapfests of 2009.yes they will be good movies, and probably they are going to make money, but for me they dont their respects to the original source, well notas they should.

For all you people who "know" star trek...

    by menstrual_blitz

The writers of this film have already mentioned the Next Gen episode "Yesterdays" enterprise (one of the most acclaimed episodes ever) as a huge influence on this new story. Now, if all of you out there complaining about continuity and the new design of the bridge would just think about Yesterdays Enterprise and how time travel effected our heroes and their environment, you'll see that all this bitching and moaning is a waste of time. Cannon is safe and sound people. To spell it out for all the trekkies; remembering the Next Gen episode mentioned above, it would be like seeing the Enterprise D bridge after the Enterprise C went through the time rift and saying "What the fuck happened to the bridge? and what's Tasha Yar doing there and why is Wesley Crusher an actual officer, this totally shits on next gen cannon." UNDERSTAND PEOPLE.

It’s high time to confess that you surprised us with your perfect outcome related to this good post. Thus, I have to try to write the legal dissertation on the base of your stuff. Or believably, this is achievable to find some thesis service.
