    by spud mcspud

Having just nursed my Mum through it (and she's as tough as granite - it'll take the Almighty coming down Himself to collect her when she collects her wings) I'm now fairly well versed in breast cancer and everything that goes with it - so watching SOUTH PARK deal with this will be awesome. I mean, if there's one show that can make you THINK they're going to be just dumbly offensive, but then actually be insightful, satirical, intelligent AND deeply offensive, it's SOUTH PARK. Parker and Stone are two of the best writers on television - PERIOD.

    by turketron

Cool music, cool graphics. The rest of the show is mildly entertaining. I watch, but it's not like I mull the plot points over in my head after it's done. Most of the episodes have felt like X-Files retreads. Liked the previous one with the large tunnelling vibrator of doom, but even that left me empty as they explained... pretty much nothing. This week's was pretty paint by the numbers. Wow... a dude that makes electrical machinery go nuts. Meh.

    Missed opportunities for this episode...

    by pinkfloyd2000

This episode could have been CLASSIC. First, it should have ended with Wendy saying "I'm finished," and then the SP credits should have been presented in the "There Will Be Blood" font, with the same music. That would have improved the episode tenfold -- the ending was terrible. But I would have gone even further with the TWBB theme throughout the episode. Man...talk about missed opportunities to make an absolutely classic and epic episode. As it was, it was mildly entertaining -- but it should have been SO MUCH more. Oh well.

Can you imagine...a closeup of a crazed Cartman, saying, "I have a competition in me...I want no one else to succeed." Yeah, I would have made this a full-blown TWBB parody episode. But hell, I don't know what the primary demographic is for SP these days. Is it still popular with the kids? Or has the viewing demographic increased because this show has been on for so long now? When it debuted in 1996, I was in college, and it was huge with us, but I've stuck with it, and still enjoy it at 34. I guess that not too many 13-year old texter-addicted Generation Me's have seen There Will Be Blood, eh?

    The ending

    by spiketbb

The fight was also heavily referencing the final fight in Snatch, right down to the music, movements, the freeze frames and Eric's bruises.
But I half expected Cartman to charge Wendy from behind and pound her face in after she said “I’m finished.” Because I knew Cartman’s ego would be salvaged at the end some how.
But I think the ending was more than that, it was making a point they had been leading up to all episode. All through the show, Cartman's true character was shown and ever bit of cool taken away from him. He was shown to be a spineless sniveling coward, his "clever" manipulations he used on his Mom for years didn't even give Wendy pause. He had to go crying to his momma, begged on his knees, and ate his own underwear then got his face beat in.
BUT, and this is the point I think they were making, is that fans will STILL think he is kewl and 'the man' when they have gone out of their way to show he is anything but. He can be as hateful, evil and pathetic as possible yet there are many fans who think he is kewl anyway. In fact his appeal is based on his lack of any redeeming qualities.
I think the ending was a commentary on that sort of blind devotion to a character that lives out the Id of the audience. The same thing took place with Spike on Buffy for a time. The writers were talking through Cartman to the audience at the end. “It doesn’t matter what happens you all love me so much you think I’m kewl anyway!” As long as Cartman is doing what the many audience members wish they could do and get away with, he is will be seen as kewl by many.

You have to be willing to lose..

    by spiketbb

You know, in retrospect I think there may be even more to it than I said earlier. Cartman is the most popular character and yet many complain he is a one note joke. "You have to be willing to lose everything or the cancer will take everything." Maybe they are afaid of it becoming the Eric Cartman show and want to tell different stories but all they hear are people yelling for more Cartman. He sure as hell got humiliated last night, makes me wonder.
It also demonstrates how bored I am at work that I am giving this so much thought.

this was wayyyy better than last week's

    by tallboy66

Last week's episode was two jokes - Butters shooting people in the dick, Lucas/Spielberg raping Indy. That was fucking IT! 20 minutes straight. It was funny, it did make you laugh, but it was empty and repetitive. This one was, shockingly, about character development and it didn't have a out-of-this-world oh-so-shocking oddball Crab People moment. It was, actually, about the characters interacting and getting a hellova lot of millage out of it, and it even had the kids, for once, kind of acting like kids. And Cartman taking a crap on a desk, too. But good stuff all around, and it actually dealt with the reality of Cartman - he's a terrible, spoiled, bratty kid who'll do anything to win. And not just a mindless rape joke over and over. Good episode, probably one of my favourites this season.
