Have Behind The Scenes Politics Scuttled LETHAL WEAPON 5??
Merrick here...
As recently as last week, word was LETHAL WEAPON 5 was being "fast tracked" by Warners, that producer Joel Silver was actively hustling to bring the film together, blah blah blah. More information about these reports can be found HERE.
What a difference a week makes.
In today's L.A. Times, director Richard Donner (who evidently was not involved with the theoretical LW5) says that the return of Riggs & Murtaugh may well have jumped the fast track completely.
"Mel turned it down," Donner said. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."
[SNIP]
"Joel Silver tried to ace me out of it. He tried to put it together but made sure he didn't do it until my contract was up. You know, it's typical of the man. A guy who wasn't even around at the beginning when we started on the first one. He came in late."
...says Donner in L.A. Times piece, which goes on to discuss Donner's preferred angle for the SUPERMAN franchise.

Hmmmm
-
I care...so little.
-
i was expecting to hear that Glover and Gibson declared that they tired of being exploited by that Jewish proloteriate...
-
Trying to ace out the "Don", come on Silver, give me a break.
I met Donner once, told him Superman changed my life. And I could tell he was told that millions of times, and yet I could tell he appreciated my praise.
-
fat.
-
I obviously meant the exact opposite of that word which is bougoise... oh god I really did waste my time at uni... bravo
-
The fuck gives three shits?
-
There is no need for another LW.
-
Its right up his suckage alley. Or maybe he's the one responsible for stealing the good out of Heroes.

Donner can still direct, I am convinced of that....
by nuking the fridge
You fucked up Joel.
Swallow some false-pride, apologize to Donner, hire him and all the pieces will fall into place for Lethal Weapon 5. That movie is bound to make a shit load of money for you, Warner, and above. Get over it Joel, do the right thing. -
That would be great.
I'm glad Lethal Weapon five isn't happening. -
16 BLOCKS
-
I wouldn't mind watching another one.
-
They bore no resemblance to 1&2. Riggs went from guy on the edge to channeling Robin Williams. So Donner wanted the same writer from 4 to do 5? Sorry I'd rather have Black take his shot. Don't get me wrong Donner has directed some of my favorite movies and my all time favorite comic movie Superman, but he's lost some of his bite. 16 Blocks was pretty pedestrian and Timeline...uh it was ok, but something seemed off on it.
-
I was hoping Speed Racer would mean he was out of a job. Fuckin hell.
-
...for me to poop on.
-
Mel is too busy making a 5th Century period piece about the sacking of Rome as seen from the Vandal perspective and in the Vandalic language. Or at least he should be.
-
It's those Jew's fault.

Donner is directing the new superman reboot - count on it
by indyabbey jones
trust me on this one..its the project that had a long history, and contracts are not finalized yet so he can't really disscuss what his true vision is but notice how the article shifts to supermans future right after the arthout mentions donner's secret project is mentionedexpect an announcment and pre production to start dec/januaray for a summer 2010 release..you can take that to the bank from an insider

Was True Romance's "Lee Donowitz" based loosely on Joel Silver?
by el bean0r peen0r
...or am i trippin' bawlz?
-
Right?
-
seriously, Donner, get over yourself. You havent done a good film in over 10 years. The direction isnt what made the LW flicks - it was Gibson, Glover, and Black's script. With Kiss Kiss he proved he can direct too. Step aside, stop whining, and let him do it.
-
Seriously, I'm sick and tired of this asswipe and all the shit he produces. Go the fuck away. And who would consider making a LW 5 without Gibson? Let alone Richard Donner. The guy's in good health and still has plenty of creative talent, despite the somewhat shittyness of some of his recent flicks.. Seriously, fuck off Joel Silver.

I like a lot of Silver stuff... but he did do Speed Racer
by shiftyeyeddog2
...and for that alone he should be taken out and shot.
-
one of the best action movies of the last ten years. So yea, Donner can still direct.

The Jews are blocking Gibson's involvement......................
by crackerfarmboy
You know it's true!
-
...the idea of a LW 5, or the idea of another Joel Silver produced movie.
-
I really don't give a shit about a LW 5, but seeing as it's bound to happen, I consider myself having the right to bitch about Joel Silver. 16 Blocks was pretty good, and I still think Donner could deliver a good sequel. Shane Black probably wouldn't be much of a bad choice either, but again, no Gibson, no film. Plain and simple. and preferably Donner would be there as well.
-
Let shane black do it, i mean c'mon donner want to put the same writers from the 4th film to this one. NO THANKS... Shane Black is the reason LW is so good and fun, he should direct the new one with a script written by himself.
-
That's still doable isn't it?
-
It's okay, I'm a jew and can thus make that joke. Still, too soon?
-
it's been said many times...
-
but you really can't bag on his record. I mean, come on, folks:
Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Predator, Lethal Weapon, The Matrix, Commando, Weird Science, 48 Hrs, The Last Boy Scout, Tales from the Crypt, Veronica Mars, V for Vendetta, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Whatever other stinkers he's made, that right there is a fucking laundry list of must-see viewing. Mark my words, future generations of movie geeks will revere Silver as legend. -
makes me want to watch them right now. Why did they have to set them during christmas? Since it's so close, I don't want to ruin it for this december.
-
Nothing against Richard Donner, but 3 and 4 sucked ass.
-
I mean, yeah, the guy made The Omen, which was brilliant. Then he went and made a bunch of junk. Nothing else in his filmography is wihout serious flaws.
Silver may be an ass, but he's an ass who's got a helluva track record. A much better one than Dick Donner. -
... so I doubt he's trying to block the involvement of his buddy Mel.
Although that won't stop certain Jew-hating pigfuckers from opening their mouths, will it? -
...Lethal Weapon flick. The first two are sacred canon, but we really don't need number five. He should direct that Viking movie he kept talking about a couple of years ago...or Conan...or do a Mad Max. We love you Mel...warts, sugar tits and all...
-
crooks. two cons put together on the run when a con goes bad. mel was done with lw after part 2, we're lucky we got 2 more, i'd settle for just a book sequel at this point.
-

I always laugh out loud when I hear or read the words Sugar Tits
by banzai rootskibango
...what does that even mean anyhow?

can the government step in and stop some of crap films from getting produced?

Behind The Scenes Politics are getting too old for this shit.
by det. john kimble
-
Scratchy scratch.
-
The only reason I would sit through LW5 is if all the old gang came back, Donner, Gibson, Glover and Black. Since this isn't the case, I'm following Mel out the door.
-
No writer or director could salvage Lethal Weapon 5 from being an embarassment to all involved. LW3 is pure shit and LW4 is only barely watchable because of Jet Li. I'd rather see Nat'l Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 2 than another Riggs-Murtaugh retread.
-
Or Mel Gibson of course. Ridiculous. Argh, this makes me mad. I so didn't want Mel to do this, but still. To think that they treated Richard Donner like this... thank gosh, they will never make this movie. Never. Not without Mel and I think that Richard Donner is right: Mel turned it down in part because of what they did to RD. And certainly, the other part being that Mel said he was through with "Lethal Weapon" and he meant it. I hope we get some updates on "Edge of Darkness."
-
AFUCKINGMEN! We need another fucking Lethal Weapon like we need another native language Mel Gibson directorial effort.
-
that is all.
-
i mean that is all to my coment. not by that is all he ever made cause u got the fucken omen and the fuckin lethaly weaponzes
-
But that man sure can hold a public grudge.
-
Put Geoff Johns on a Superman script for sure! He is the best comic author out there right now.
-
when for months we've been submitted to rumours and Z-list hangers-on saying they are up for cameos in an on-track LW5, neglecting the fact that the lead and previous form director were nowhere to be seen.
Some franchises could do the new-angle, new leads but no Gibson-Glover = no LW. All films are about chemistry and capturing a moment in time. Thats why Indy 4 failed, and thats why LW5 would have failed. -
What about Superman and Lethal Weapon?
-
Agreed, the original Superman was the first comic book movie to treat its material seriously. The first 40 minutes of Superman is just gobsmacking. Look at the talent involved in that movie, John Barry, Geoffrey Unsworth, John Williams, and then look at the 'talent' involved in blockbusters today. Its no wonder summer movies are in the toilet.

Look fr Michael Kamen to be replaced by Marco Beltrami
by nasty in the pasty
-
Even 3 and 4, which I know some people don't like at all. Very, very rarely do I stop enjoying movies because of anything I've heard about the actors involved. If it's good I see the character, not the actor; all that crap stays off the screen. But it's gone past that point with Cruise, and it's gone past that point with Gibson. I'd never pay good money to see something with either of them in it. Unless it's South Park. Which pisses me off, frankly, because both of them were in some damn good stuff. So, no LW5? Couldn't give a monkey's left nut either way.
-
Some series need to just f-ing die *cough*Indy*cough*
-
before they are 'too old for this shit'?
-
I mean, I would've seen it and all, but the only reason I had any hopes for it being good was Shane Black wrote it. Now, get on with making Mad Max 4, that's a series that isn't finished!
-
I really didn't like the 3rd film too much, but I enjoyed the 4th one. I thought it made sense...they are older and they are showing it. They aren't superheros...they are human. Great work. A fifth one could still be good!
-
What ever happened to the next ROAD WARRIOR movie. I would rather see that then another one of these stupid flicks.
-
...I don't care why. Praise Jesus.
-
Love sticking needles into the voodoo doll that is BACK IN THE DAY syndrome. As I remember - Summer of 78 included Convoy, The Wiz (BOOOO HISSSS), Jaws 2, Bad News Bears go To Japan and the truly officious The Swarm. For you kids playing at home - there's a reason you dont most of those titles - they were lumpy, stench-ridden piles of cinematic turds not worthy of the rose-colored glasses treatment.
-
Please - argue that Grease with that pre-Physical "I wanna get aaaaaanimaaaal" Olivia Newton-John is in the same-class as Dark Knight. I dare ya - i double dog dare ya.
-
With Steve Carrel.
-
Wasn't it axed cuz of civil war in Namibia or somesuch? And sorry - but Mel Gibson is not a viable commodity right now and even if he were to stage a remarkable comeback in 5 years, he'd be pushing 60 so cmon let it die - rewatch your Master-Blaster special edition with bonus footage Road Warrior instead.
-
...23 YEARS AGO? Too old for this, indeed!
-
Too old for this shit, indeed!
-
It turns out Riggs has a son he didn't know about and the criminal conspiracy is actually an alien conspiracy.
When the film turns out to suck Mel can blame the Jews. -
...other movies released in 1978 such as the Deer Hunter and Midnight Express are certainly superior to The Dark Knight
-
Heaven Can Wait and Coming Home, again, two more movies better than The Dark Knight.
-
LW5: written by Black, starring Gibson and Glover, directed by the man himself, Richard Donner. Riggs and Murtaugh re-team to avenge the murder of Sgt. Butters.
-
I'm kinda glad to see this die. Some series really should just be left alone.
Mel ain't exactly the same guy he used to be and Danny Glover is getting too old for this shit. -
and he can go rot in hell. he uses fear and intimidation needlessly and engenders absolutely no loyalty, even among those who have worked for him for years. oh, and he is a taltentless fat jackass of a fuck. how does i know? i only sent ONE script home with him the ENTIRE time i worked for him. that says it all, doesn't it folks?
-
When did Silver ever work on anything good besides the first Matrix and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? I hate how he praises himself during interviews. Judging by Sword Fish and now Speed Racer, he is also on meth.
-
The Warriors, 48 Hours, Lethal Weapon, Predator, Die Hard, The Last Boy Scout (yes), V For Vendetta, Veronica Mars. He's made plenty of crap too, but to act like he's made no good movies, not to mention several iconic movies, is ridiculous.
-
or he'll wind-up in another SAW crapfest (reprising his role as a really dumb dick).
