Have Behind The Scenes Politics Scuttled LETHAL WEAPON 5??

Published at:  Oct 13, 2008 8:13:42 PM CDT

Merrick here...

As recently as last week, word was LETHAL WEAPON 5 was being "fast tracked" by Warners, that producer Joel Silver was actively hustling to bring the film together, blah blah blah. More information about these reports can be found HERE.

What a difference a week makes.

In today's L.A. Times, director Richard Donner (who evidently was not involved with the theoretical LW5) says that the return of Riggs & Murtaugh may well have jumped the fast track completely.

"Mel turned it down," Donner said. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."
[SNIP]
"Joel Silver tried to ace me out of it. He tried to put it together but made sure he didn't do it until my contract was up. You know, it's typical of the man. A guy who wasn't even around at the beginning when we started on the first one. He came in late."

...says Donner in L.A. Times piece, which goes on to discuss Donner's preferred angle for the SUPERMAN franchise.

    by slder78

They bore no resemblance to 1&2. Riggs went from guy on the edge to channeling Robin Williams. So Donner wanted the same writer from 4 to do 5? Sorry I'd rather have Black take his shot. Don't get me wrong Donner has directed some of my favorite movies and my all time favorite comic movie Superman, but he's lost some of his bite. 16 Blocks was pretty pedestrian and Timeline...uh it was ok, but something seemed off on it.

seriously, Donner, get over yourself. You havent done a good film in over 10 years. The direction isnt what made the LW flicks - it was Gibson, Glover, and Black's script. With Kiss Kiss he proved he can direct too. Step aside, stop whining, and let him do it.

To think that they treated Richard Donner like this... thank gosh, they will never make this movie. Never. Not without Mel and I think that Richard Donner is right: Mel turned it down in part because of what they did to RD. And certainly, the other part being that Mel said he was through with "Lethal Weapon" and he meant it. I hope we get some updates on "Edge of Darkness."

when for months we've been submitted to rumours and Z-list hangers-on saying they are up for cameos in an on-track LW5, neglecting the fact that the lead and previous form director were nowhere to be seen.

Some franchises could do the new-angle, new leads but no Gibson-Glover = no LW. All films are about chemistry and capturing a moment in time. Thats why Indy 4 failed, and thats why LW5 would have failed.

Agreed, the original Superman was the first comic book movie to treat its material seriously. The first 40 minutes of Superman is just gobsmacking. Look at the talent involved in that movie, John Barry, Geoffrey Unsworth, John Williams, and then look at the 'talent' involved in blockbusters today. Its no wonder summer movies are in the toilet.

Even 3 and 4, which I know some people don't like at all. Very, very rarely do I stop enjoying movies because of anything I've heard about the actors involved. If it's good I see the character, not the actor; all that crap stays off the screen. But it's gone past that point with Cruise, and it's gone past that point with Gibson. I'd never pay good money to see something with either of them in it. Unless it's South Park. Which pisses me off, frankly, because both of them were in some damn good stuff. So, no LW5? Couldn't give a monkey's left nut either way.
