van Damme's In FULL LOVE!!

Published at:  Oct 13, 2008 1:32:49 PM CDT

Merrick here...

I missed the recent Fantastic Fest screening of JCVD, but I'm dying to see the movie. I'm all about "reinvention", and have a lot of respect for anyone who 1) perceives the need to reinvent themselves for personal or professional reasons (or both), and 2) actually manages to do so successfully.

In this particular case, I'm referring of Jean-Claude van Damme, whose JCVD is a radical departure from the work he's done before. A newish trailer for it can be seen HERE.

With JCVD currently making its way to screen across the world, Jean-Claude is already at work on his next film: FULL LOVE.

Very little is known about Full Love at the moment other than that it was shot in Thailand and is a very personal project for the man behind it, so personal that two of his children - Kristopher and Bianca Van Varenberg - both have roles in it. As for Van Damme himself, he describes it as being “based on a true story, based in another reality”, which is as confusing as it is intriguing. Beyond that he simply notes that it is “about love, friendship, and dedication.”

...doesn't JCVD get rid of the forehead lump? I mean, is it attached to his brain so that it is impossible to remove? I don't get it. It looks like a cyst of some kind. Does he only believe in "holistic" medicine or something?

    by flickapoo

...I saw Van Damme...I think it was on Letterman, a long long time ago. He had this terrible VERY long in the back mullet and he was taking some heat for it...anyway, he resisted all attempts at humor and tried to explain that the mullet was there for a reason...that the long flap of hair would swing around in slow motion during jumping kicky stuff and beautifully enhance the motion. He then made an earnest appeal to the "ladies" in the audience to confirm his theory...

    Timecop 2

    by kdoc13

I know there was already a Timecop 2, and a lame TV show. But if he wants a real comeback, this was his biggest flick, and probably his best one. He needs a good script for a sequel, a decent director, and a halfway decent budget. But I'd be there.

He's a joke? He is a desperate man? What are you people, all Kings and Scholars? No one is allowed to be desperate, and to use that desperation to make some good material? My God, it must be so easy for you fat, socially inept, hate-filled losers to shit on a 3 minute clip in order to exert some measure of control over a world that has otherwise ignored and marginalized your very existence. You are all what is wrong with this planet.

    by thelastcleric

Van Damme lied through his teeth about his martial arts credentials and has managed to piss off just about every real martial artist he's come into contact with. He also blinded a stuntman due to his own ineptitude when filming Cyborg and instead of doing the right thing the poor bastard had to sue Van Damme to get reasonable compensation. Van Damme also has a history of talking shit on other people, apparently in between doing lines of coke, which is why he got his sorry ass handed to him at Scores. (The Muscles from Brussles was knocked out in one punch by the way) The man was always a fucking fraud, his movies for the most part are shit, and he's a notorious asshole. Excuse the fuck out of me for not being impressed by his little comeback special, especially when there are so many other true martial artists who deserve our collective intention. Fuck this sorry bitch; he’s had more of a career than he ever deserved.

I hear it's supposed to be pretty good.

Sounds like Van Damme has taken firm control of his career and with a tongue stuck firmly in cheek is putting out superior product.
he can with one hand poke fun at himself and with the other make a good AA film.

    van damme is no fraud

    by gavinvandraven

he may have embellished on his resume for martial arts, but he WAS legit as a fighter. the guy was a competitive kickboxer with an 18 and 1 overall record with 18 ko's. he is a black belt in shotokan karate and has trained in muay thia during his acting career. the reason his moves look so fluid is due to 5 years training in ballet, which is no joke.... ask anyone who has tried it. could the guy compete in mixed martial arts right now? doubtful. back in the early days? maybe in a match with another pure striker. i bet he would beat any talkbackers here in a fight. i wouldnt fuck with the guy. oh yeah... one sucker-punch knockout doesn't mean shit by the way. ANYBODY can be knocked out, especially if they dont know they are in a fight and get hit on the jaw or point of the chin, as was the case when JCVD got knocked out. almost every guy in the UFC or any other MMA organization has gotten knocked out at least once. if they havent been floored at least once, then they havent had any real competition yet. you fight for long enough, you get beat. that's the way it is. sure the guy has made some mistakes, but he seems to be making better choices these days, and that is worthy of praise in my book. good for him if he is reinventing himself. i bet all you fanboy tools were dissing Robert Downey JR back in the day... and look how he has turned it around. good stuff. good for you JCVD.

Good to see JCVD on the comeback trail

    by killakane

Been consigned to DTV hell for far too long. Made some entertaining albeit cheezmongous and dare I say it 'classic' action flicks in the 90's (Kickboxer and Bloodsport being personal faves). Nice to see an action star taking a risk, and throwing it out there, seems like it's paid off. Looking forward to catching it (hopefully at the cineplex this time).
