AICN COMICS SHOOT THE MESSENGER: 1st image of Captain America from Hulk DVD? Previews of DMZ, THE DARKNESS, JSA!!!
What’s SHOOT THE MESSENGER?
Well, AICN COMICS: SHOOT THE MESSENGER is your weekly one stop shop for comic book news that’s dropped in the previous week. Thanks to Newsarama, CBR, Wizard, etc. for reporting it as it breaks. Click on the links for the original stories. This column cuts the crap to run down all the vital information for those of you who don’t follow it as it comes in, and serves it all up with that special ingredient of @$$y goodness. It’s also the place for interviews, previews, and special reports.
Hey folks, Ambush Bug here. I got an email this weekend that claims that this image is a still from the new HULK DVD that shows what looks like Captain America frozen in the ice. Haven’t seen this anywhere on the net, so I decided to put it here. Check it out.
The guy who sent me this said that if you play the Alternate Opening Scene and pause it at 2:25 into it, you’ll see the above image. Pretty damn cool. If it’s real, it’s a hell of an Easter Egg for the DVD.
Well, on with the previews.
Hey folks, short column this week. We’ve got a pair of previews for you to enjoy.
First up is a peek at issue six of THE DARKNESS. This book is written by Phil Hester with art from Michael Broussard. Check it out.
DARKNESS #6 is in stores this Wednesday.
Next we have a preview of JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #19. We’re up to our eyeballs in Gog and Magog these days in JSA. This arc has been a slow burner, but big things are happening to the JSA and soon the rest of the DCU. Check out this preview if you don’t believe me.
Get your Gog on this Wednesday.
Finally, we have a preview of this week's issue of Brian Wood's DMZ from Vertigo. After the recent multipart storyline regarding an attempt at a free election in the demilitarized zone, the book is taking a brief jaunt out to Staten Island for the first time since the series started. Wood is using the two-parter to introduce us to yet another new aspect of life in the DMZ, and naturally it's every bit as cheery as you'd expect from this title. I continue to be impressed by how well thought out the political and military scenarios in this title are. Check out these pages...
Be sure to check out DMZ #35, bombing the comic book racks this Wednesday.
Since we saw the first image of the new Cap this week from the HULK DVD, it’s got me thinking again about casting. Who do you think should play Cap in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER?
He looks perfect for the role and doesn’t have all the baggage of a big star.
Who do you think would be the perfect Cap?

Marvel doing Cap right.

I GOT A DINOSAUR!
-
Cool (and exciting) image!!! ANd I think Valley is a GREAT choice for casting! Good Call!
-
I see nothing in that picture whatsoever.
-
I'm seeing Cap's shield...concentric red and white rings, with maybe the darker blue in the middle. And, yes, that is cool.
-
While it is not clear (It took me a minute or two) if one looks carefully one can very distictly see the good Captain's shield quite clearly.
-
He's pure Steve Rogers.
-
I don't see anything in the ice either, by the way.
Valley has a recurring role on Fringe. He may get known for that long before the movie comes out. -
This is a better screencap;

the captain america image has been on the intraweb for days.

Looking for his shield makes it seriously easier!

Cap was trying to get to Superman!
-
I would imagine him in a block of ice since he's been there for a while, not peeking out of a snow drift but anyways it's still kinda cool.

of, er, some blueish stuff.

Michael C Hall as Cap: "In the end, we learned the Avengers...
by rock-me amodeo
"...were more alike than we realized. A brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal..." Brilliant! Maybe we could call it "The Avengers Club!" And...What? That's Anthony Michael Hall?Never mind.
-
He is too old. Mark is 44 years old right now. That is why Thomas Jane wont work either. Cap has to be in his 20s. He is supposed to be a young volunteer for WWII. You cant have someone in their 40s play Cap in the first movie. By the end of the trilogy (which they always do) he will look like Harrison Ford!!!!

I really like Valley for several reasons, one: he is a West Point grad, and former Army Officer, as well as a Desert Storm (GWI) veteran. This screams the type of background to play Cap, and do him justice. The way Downey Jr’s past made him the perfect Stark. Two: He has a very understated acting style and seems quite laid back, yet can bring the intensity in a flash when needed, and has an all American boy thing about him. Three: he looks like Cap. All are very good things.
On the downside, Mike 683is right, he is 43 almost 44 and in recent appearances is starting to show his age in his face more than before. Sadly as good of a job as I think he would do you must look for an actor who is young enough to fit Cap’s origin and will have the longevity to play the character for several outings. I would love if they found someone with a background similar to Valley’s though, cap needs to have a presence and way of carrying himself that having been a former military officer or sergeant lends to men. They have a subtle way that shows they are used to being a leader, and will add a bit more realism to the role.
Age also plays a factor I think in the character verses Tony Stark. Downey is in his early forties and I think the juxtaposition of Tony who by all rights should in his mind be the leader of the Avengers due to age and materiel contributions, will be trumped in ability and experience by a guy half as smart and nearly half his age, but with palpable ability and real world experience far greater than Tony’s. I like that a lot about Cap, he is just a good guy with smarts under pressure and tactical brilliance, leading a Norse God, two super geniuses , a stark raving monster, and a handful of other assorted bad asses into battle. Next to Hawkeye he is the most normal or close to unenhanced human character in the Avengers.
Also I hope the actor they pick is American. Nothing at all against British, Aussie, Kiwi, or European actors there are many great ones, that I dare say are better trained than most of our native stock, but this is Cap, he is an American icon. I’d like to see an unknown American actor play him in the spirit of Chris Reeves being found for Superman.
All told I have high hopes for Cap’s movie, setting in WWII is a great idea to intro the character and establish him as a symbol of America’s greatness as it once was and could one day be again, in a purer time that a lot of kids may see as hokey, but could learn alot from.
Has anyone heard yet how they are going to film Avengers and Cap? Since the movies are going to be released less than two months apart I can only guess they’ll be filming at nearly the same time, that will be interesting to see and a lot of work for whoever they pick to play Cap.

I saw this guy while my wife was watching 'The Ex List' (blows...fun to look at though...) and immediately nicknamed him Captain America..take a look

He's got the looks, he's from Montreal, and he's born on my son's birthday...3 votes from me..but damn this guy looks too young to play Cap...even at 29! He's too young 'looking'..if you get my meaning...but who knows..could work.
-
I had originally started that as four different posts, but just lumped them all together, sorry to anyone who reads that unbroken block.
-
I think you're all picking the wrong Fisher brother for this role. Krause hasn't done a whole lot since The Lost Room on Sci-Fi, and while people know who he is, he's not saddled by tons of baggage for the role. Talk about a guy that can act, has the right look, and would completely own that part. He'd be note-perfect casting.
-
Its going to be hard finding the balance between someone who looks like a mature Cap, like Valley; bit is pushing too old to continue the character for long, Verses someone like Andrew Walker who is closer to Caps supposed age at his origin, which I think was only 22 or 23 and the fact that actors that young with the chops and gravitas to play Cap are extremely few and far between. That’s why I used the example of Reeve in Superman. He was only 26 when he first put on the tights to play the man of steel but he had a great maturity about him that made you buy into his earnestness and sincerity. Whoever plays Cap needs to have that feel. But at the same time comes off a soldier who has killed and seen war first hand.
-
Remember Cap is not just a man out of time, he is also a man suddenly thrust into peace. This is a guy who not only goes to sleep in 1945 to wake up in the 21st century, he also goes from mid battle in the largest war mankind has ever known to a time in which he will not be fighting as a soldier. That will be a strange thing two. If you have family in the military, past or present, they can explain what that feels like going from war to home overnight. It is jarring, or at least it was for me.
-
If this is indeed a vague glimpse of what the Captain America suit will look like (very true to the comic), then I'm a bit surprised. Cap's suit was one of those that I assumed was a bit garish and "comic-booky" for the more realistic film world they would put him in. The traditional suit is great but I wonder if it'll translate well to film. Can't wait though, Cap was always my fav next to Batman!
-
Yeah, Thot, I was surprised that it was so faithful too, but it may be likely that in order to sell more figures, there'll be a number of suits in the film. And probably one from WWII and a redesigned one (from Tony?) for the present. And about the grainy pic. It is what I got. Sorry to make y'all squint.
-
If buff enough and enthusiastic about the role.
-
Cap’s costume actually works quite well in a modern context since the advent of “dragon scale” body armor, it the perfect way to explain his chainmail like appearance on his tunic. Just say it an experimental form of miniturized D-Scale. I know they are going to play with his look a bit, but I really hope they go no further in altering it than that of his Ultimates look. That was a good revamp of the Cap suit without going apeshit crazy the way Alex Ross did on his Cap Redux, God I hate that thing, shiny flexible chromed red, white, and blue armor up top, and black everything else. I just don’t want to see a rubber Bat style Cap suit, either. Make it cloth and functional, give it a light neoprene or nomex-like look. I hope the WWII Cap gets the Ultimates' take on a customized US Army WWII infantry uniform, I thought that was a brilliant idea.
-
Paul Walker is who you want.A. He's still youngish.B. He's in shape.C. He looks like Cap with his blonde haired, blue eyed young Americanis.Check out Flags of our Fathers to see him as a World War II soldier and check out Running Scared to see his chops as an action star with emotional range. He's the guy, experienced, talented and still generally unknown enough not to taint the role with baggage. If not Paul Walker though, it should go to Cole Hauser, although he isn't that great of an actor.
-
One of the few things I'd ever complain about from the artist, being the fan that I am. His design should hold ZERO influence on the movie costume.
-
He's a bit too pretty to be Cap.
-
'Merica.
-
Flexible Chrome Skin Tight Shiny Body Armor, ala the old Iron Man red and gild armor... Such an artistic cop out.
-
But he's box office poison, so that's a problem.
So, how about Spencer Pratt?
I kid, I kid.
The McConaughey idea is hilarious. I would SO go see that movie, but for the wrong reasons.
Thomas Jane is ideal, but yeah I guess too old. But then, who could do it that's young? All the young actors have the body, but that's about it. Need to go with a semi-unknown similar to the guy who played Pyro in X2, or the guy who did Iceman. But a bit older. -
He's an actor. Do you think an ugly guy is going to play him? No, we might as well put that arguement to bed right now... the guy who plays cap is going to be "pretty", he's not even going to be rugged, he'll be pretty, there's going to be too much money involved in the project to not try to bring in other demographics besides the nerd fanbase. Cap has got to look like a good ameican boy and yet still be able to kick ass and Walker has pulled that off. Personally, I hope they stick him in the WWII Ultimates costume for at least part of the movie. Thats a great design.
-
Seriously. why do people like him? What has he done that has earned him this postivie regard people seen to have? I don't see it.True on Walker, he doesn't have a great track record, but I wouldn't call him box office poison, I mean come on, he's not Taye Diggs
-
But there's a difference between Pretty and a Pretty-Boy. You can be "pretty" and still kick ass, I just pray cap doesn't have this perfectly quaffed metrosexual thing going on, I liked Routh in Superman Returns, but thought he was too much a pretty-boy the way he was done. Cap is gonna need to look like he can get dirty without needing a wet knap. Sweat without be spritzed, you know what I mean? A "pretty" guy’s guy, if that doesn’t sound gay enough.
-
And is he still FRESH after all these years?
-
Watch Stander.
-
but he'll damn sure be cool... Ah, hell yeah...
-
you can clearly see why jane was picked for the punisher after seeing Stander. good film for an action/crime thing but how could it not be given the story it's based on.
-
And it didn't blow my skirt up. As far as crime movies go, it is at best: mediocre, not great and not anything to rail against. His performance wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't a "wow" performance at all. I mean, what, that movie plus a forgettable turn as Frank Castle in a what is only saved from being the WORST Punisher film by the simple fact that the first one is AMAZINGLY bad, makes him a geek icon? what's with that? Besides, the guy is like 2 and a half feet tall, come on...
-
Watch Flags of our Fathers. Walker plays a convincing all american soldier in WWII and does not come off as a pretty boy and he certainly does not come off that way in Running Scared, which while it may be a stupid movie, it does let him bad ass it up a bit.
-
than a pretty one is my point. Paul Walker is WAY too "Pretty-Boy" IMHO.
-
And he'll never, ever get the role.
-
I've seen Walker in Flags and Running Scarred and like him in both. He's a good possible for Cap, but I still lean on the idea of an unknown getting the role, that way there are no presumptions following the actor in the role of Cap based on good or bad work in the past.
-
Well, not Paul Walker. He looks the part, but lacks..."gravitas"? Now that Norton and Downey Jr. have made superhero roles A list...would Matt Damon be willing to do it?
-
...in their casting so far which is great. Norton and Downey are not the pretty-boy types and I've like both bits of casting, hopefully they'll keep this eye for character when they cast Cap. I'm still waiting to see who they're going to peg as Thor and Antman, though the rumble if it even was one about Eva Longoria speaking with Marvel about playing Wasp scares the piss outta me. Please not one of the fucking housewives, and no one from Sex and the City, my wife drove me nuts with that show.
-
I love that word. Thesauruses rule.
-
I've been saying Mark Valley in the talkbacks for a long time, since he was on boston legal! I'm glad i'm not the only one to see it...
-
I'm sorry but I have to agree with Joenathan. While Walker isn't box office poison, at the same time, he hasn't done much that make people go, I want to go to his movie to see him!
-
Cause they took it out in Ultimates and it annoys me.
-
I don't see jack shit, but ice.
-
Can't see shit for ice!?
-
Thats about all you can make out, okay? God damn, buy a new computer screen...
-
That Peter Krause suggestion IS a good one.
-
he woudltn have the circle shield when frozen, he woul dhave the triangle one. plus why would the shield be in Iron man if Tony Stark has no idea there even is a captain america till the end of the movie when he meets Fury. Its cool they are doing this , but they need to think about the timeline .
-
I really hope thay do rid the costume of the wings and I'm sure they will. There's no reason for him to run around with what looks like to humming bird wings glued to his head. All they would do is serve as grabbing points for someone to knee him in the face.
-
are better than Namor's at least.
-
They never establish that the public doesn't know about Cap in Iron Man. In the comics he was used as a promoter for American recruitment and posterboy for the war effort, so Tony being a fan of old hot rodes and classic things may have been tooling around with a new shield jus for kicks for nostalgia and what if purposes. I have a feeling this is going to be the angle they use in the rest of the Marvel flix. But you are right, he should have had the triangle shield in the ice.
-
I never got why the hell the Submariner would have wings on his feet. He is a sea based creature, then again he flies, so why the hell they have him do that? I never got the whole Namor thing, he was just too much of a jumble of random powers.
-
they made it the exact suit in the comic so its more recognizable to comi cfans under the ice. its just some mattepainters 2D painting of him. Definitly not the Final suit for the movie in anyway.
-
Even if he wasn't too old, and prone to overemoting when his character is supposed to be upset, there's the fact he's busy as the lead character on ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money". I wouldn't call that "not doing a whole lot"--he's got a bigger role than Donald Sutherland, fer cryin' out loud.
-
"Surrender??!! You think this letter on my head stands for France!!!" Oh, good times. I remember Mark Millar had to apologize for that shit. I call foul on that, France just needs a sense of humor about that shit already. We’re used to the “Stupid American thing.”
-
He was thawed with the round shield, in the comics he only had the triangle shield in his first couple '40s stories, then got 'upgraded' to the round one. Later on when Marvel started doing flashback/retro/origin/etc stories they would give him the triangle shield in those.
-
I'll take Paul Walker over McConaughey, but he still aint the best man for the role.... How about Justin Timberlake?
-
With Kate Winslet as Sharon Carter, and Billy Zane as the Red Skull. Seriously, I think Leo should be Cap.
-
This was over on Nukethefridge yesterday, and as we in the UK got the disc today (Saturday for net preorders) I confirmed it. Alternate ending, literally 2 seconds before the end.
-
What a great idea.
-
Talking to Hulk on an iceberg?
Would someone be able to confirm this because I'm busting to see it. -
Well, since they didn't use this in the movie, it doesn't conflict with Tony having the round shield in Iron Man, because... since it wasn't in the film it didn't happen.Milflover is right. Originally, Cap received the round shield from FDR, so he WOULD have it in the ice, but since they're using the Ultimates Universe as a guiding light, I'll bet Tony was hired by the government to make this shield for them and they didn't tell him why because Cap's recovery would be classified. I bet that Iron Man the movie takes place at the same time as the Cap movie. That he's already been recovered, but not yet revealed to the world, that he doesn't have his new gear yet and he's probably still dealing with culture shock meanwhile, Tony is making the shield because he was paid to.
-
No, there isn't. sorry.
-
He was Sgt. Colbert in Generation Kill and plays Eric on True Blood. I love the dude. He can act and has a good look. I wouldn't mind Paul Walker as I do actually think he can act. I DO think this Cap should be on the younger side....
-
Cap's adamantium shield was frozen with him. That couldn't have been his shield in Stark's lab. My guess is that Stark was helping the military attempt to recreate the shield, since nobody has ever been able to duplicate the accident of construction that created it. Do I get a no-prize?
-
Ol' boy just has that generic-ass frat boy look to him.
-
Seriously?
"Ah hah, Bucky. Ya'll think ya'll can be the Captain of America, but you're wrong. Cuz it's me. Right? Ah hah."He's a great choice if Cap is gonna smoke pot, own a boat and never wear a shirt. -
Muahahahaha.
-
Thats regular Cap that had the shield with him in the ice. Ultimate Cap did not have the shield with him and as for movie Cap... who knows, so that shield in Iron Man, that totally could have been the real thing. Time will tell.
-
Walker is the next best. Skarsgard like Valley has a military background too. He was a marine in Sweden. Like some other TBers I'd prefer an American for the role but he is the best choice.
-
Seriously, Alexander Skarsgard makes a lot of sense. We know he played a similar role very well in Generation Kill (he was a standout) and he's got serious acting chops to hold up to guys like Ed Norton and RDJ. He has the look and he can play a wide age range. I'd be down with this guy. It doesn't matter to me that he's not American.
-
http://tv.yahoo.com/show/39472/photos/16
How much does he look like Cap. Alex Skarsgard could make a very good other blonde avenger with a hammer... -
I vote Colin Ferguson from Sci-Fi's Eureka. He's got the look and charisma for the part. Only weird bit is having a Canadian playing Captain America.
-
It'd make the NeoCons happy after losing Republican stranglehold on Washington.
-
...my suggestion for Cap casting--Josh Hartnett. Firstly, he's a decent actor and would probably take the part. Secondly, he's an all-American type, which is probably the main criterion for casting Cap. Third, I don't think Cap should feel like the totally in control, square jawed hero in a WWII origin movie. He's a young man thrust into a position of terrifying responsibility, like most soldiers in WWII. I reckon Hartnett could bring that hint of vulnerability in contrast to some of the more fan-friendly choices. Then again, unlike our Fearless Leader, I'm not even completely closed off to Will Smith. He'd at least bring some charisma and distinction to a character most audiences only know on name level. As for directing, I reckon Paul Greengrass is somewhat conceivable and would make a good movie.
-
He's been playing Steve Rogers for the past 4 years on BSG. Plus he's got the look, the talent, and the "will sign on for multiple films at tv salary pay" appeal to the studios.

I vote Michael Cera
-
And the blue hump to his left is Moon Knight. The blue hump to his right is Black Panther in the fetal position, and at the top of the iceberg, you can see light reflecting off the Vision's metallic cock. Talk about satisfying cameos!!
-
NEED I SAY MORE?
oh and Colin Ferguson!
Now why didn't I think of him, he's great he just needs to hit the gym and he's Cap. -
at first I could see something in the ice, but not make out any Captain America details, then I read some of the TB and then I saw it clear as day, very cool
-
That is all....
-
should be Hawkeye!
Hawkeye lives motherfucker...now,pass the bongos! -
It my be nice to have a young guy in the mix; also, I don't know that hartnet is such a bad idea either. Eckhart is too old. Save Mcconaughy for Hawkey as a side character. I don't really care about the dream of an avenger's movie, but i could see this coming together...
-
He's younger than Robert Downey Jr.
-
Ryan McPartlin, I can totally see this dude being Captain America. I don't know about the acting, but he definitely looks the part.
-
Best line ever.
-
Well kind of...http://www.youtube .com/watch?v=CBKlHBvn6ds

just above recruitment age. Jensen Ackles I say.
-
...because, for some reason, I just can't get Power Girl's costume outta my head!
-
...it's Cartman! And he'll be frozen there for 5-HUNDRED-YEARS!
-
I agree with blindambition238. I just got into BSG last year, and within 2 or 3 episodes I immediate thought Jamie Bamber would make an ideal Cap. he has the look, the jawline, the eyes, and the ability to play altruistic almost to the point of wanting to smack him. That's PERFECT for an out-of-his-era conflicted boy scout like Cap. Plus Bamber has great range, both emotionally and physically. Look at how many different personalities Lee has gone through on BSG...cocky young CAG, rebellious son, defacto leader military, Battlestar Captain, googly-eyed obsessed in love, underground militia, lawyer, and ultimate President. And he has gone from young and fit to old and dumpy to reborn and steely. We literally watch him age. It's hollywood magic, but he managed to pull it all off.
Mostly though, it's his ability to play a character driven by his own very basic moral code, even when that leaves him at odds with his friends, lovers, father, etc. Perfect for Cap, who is driven completely by his internal sense of right.
I've been saying it for over a year, I love Bamber for this part. Others may work and may even be better, but he is the only one I feel confident CAN'T mess it up. Others MAY be great, but I feel I KNOW Bamber can be could (and possibly career-makingly awesome) in this role. -
(Good thinking, KCViking.) How awesome "AVENGERS" could be, with the right people involved and complete willingness.
-
Casper Van Dien of Starship Troopers.
Pretty, but not too pretty.
Definitely All American.
40 this year, but can still pull off mid or early 30's. -
This dude has the looks and definitely the acting chops for it. Anyone not watching sliced awesome that is Supernatural is really missing out.
-
Stop it, Optimus. No! Bad! Bad, Optimus!
-
I was afraid I was too late to the game to make some heads spin.
I will say that ten years lighter and with a smidge more acting talent, he wouldn't be the worse choice.
