Don takes a business trip to Los Angeles, where he hooks up with some interesting new acquaintances; Peggy's in the mood for an office romance; Duck contemplates the future at Sterling Cooper.

An old friend and Don renew acquaintances; Pete's personal problems impact a major account; Joan introduces her fiancé around the office.

according to the Emmy's and a dozen magazine articles published over the Summer. And the attention to detail in getting the hair styles, clothing, furnishings, technology and slang accurate for the periods is incredible.But it's still a soap opera, right? Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like a lot of evening soap operas - Desperate Housewives, Dirty Sexy Money, Lipstick Jungle, both Shondra Rhimes doctor shows - even House and Bones and Ghost Whisperer have a lot of soapy elements. so there's nothing wrong with evening soap operas, but that's what Mad Men is, right?

Because it pounds for this show and Christina Hendricks and January Jones. How many times will Don glare at Pete like he wants to punch him? My bet is seven but it could go up to an even dozen. Maybe he even will do it (or they'll save that for the finale). God I can't wait.

Everyone hates on them b/c you think of the daytime shows but come on. If you have to crank out of 5 hours of airtime every week, it would probably suck too. There is no reason a once-a-week nighttime soap can't be good and that's what MAD MEN is. A great soap.

The fact is Mad Men corners a topic none of us would think to be intensely interesting but the writers make it so. They explore the minutia of that time period, both in emotions and actions. This show represents a kind of symbolic history of American culture through fictive storylines that resonate within the social boundaries of today. Okay, last sentence sounded like BS but you know it's true. Simple answer: It's a very literary and exceedingly well structured show.

Can't wait to see how they move forward towards next season, considering Weiner's admission the show will jump ahead in time many years in between seasons from now on.

Yes, it was strange to see him in such casual attire after seeing him on MAD MEN every week. The other actor that he was happy for was Bryan Carnston who stars in AMC's other hit show BREAKING BAD, which if you haven't seen it is fantastic. I believe the new season starts in January. You should definitely check it out. Most people know Bryan from MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, where he played the eccentric father Hal. I'm excited for the latest episode of MAD MEN, which starts in just three short minutes.

Looks like Sal may have found a buddy. And that scene was rather uncomfortable as we now sort of know how some of the office gang feels about homosexuals.And how about Duck, huh? That Martini seemed to bring out his killer instinct. He's making moves!

Looks like the peeks into Don's Past, that i've been waiting for all season, will come in the next 2 ep's. Don's such a fucking enigma and that's what makes this show so great.

...the return of Dick Whitman?!It definitely looks like Pete will be positioning himself now that Don's gone AWOL. And I love the closing shot of the returned luggage.Very interesting story elements tonight. Good stuff.

Yes, the expression on his face during the MIRV presentation was very interesting. I wonder what was going through his mind...his tendency to live in the moment goes hand in hand with his somewhat fatalistic outlook on the world.

I enjoy watching Dexter, but I don't understand why people compare these two shows. For me, they are fulfilling and entertaining in completely different ways. That said....if you go into Dexter thinking it's going to exceed the quality and finesse of Mad Men, I think you'll be disappointed.

Herc- I'm not following you on how Don firing his secretary led to the whole Duck thing. I thought Duck got pissed that Sterling wouldn't make him a partner so Duck brokered the deal to sell the company to get even. How does the secretary play into that?

So many things....Peggy admiting that she chooses the wrong boys(i.e., Pete, Don?), Duck plotting to push out Sterling and Cooper, and masking it as the company taking on new international buisness, Roger falling head over heels for his new secretary chick(he got over Joan quick....does anyone remember the comment Joan made to him when he found her in his office, after it was announced Marilyn Monroe had dies?..something about 'Losing something that's special to you'?...Mad Men is a show deep with foreshadowing, and always follows-up ideas that are introduced, could reflect a current affair)...Pete's resoning behind not liking L.A. Made no sense, yet perfect sense: He complained about the people(I assume 'rudeness'), yet he chastised the bartender, got offended there wasn't valet, and was typical Pete. I thinl people who are asshole's tend to not recognize it within themselves, yet take offense to EVERYTHING. I also like that he noticed Peggy's hairstyle. How shocked was Sal when that dude came out of the closet to the office crew? Almost like a 'what if' moment for him...he'd better keep reading his Playboys. And last but not least, Don the man Draper....sorry everyone...Joy has Betty beat in my book....sure, she's younger, and her mind probably changes like the wind, but like it was said before....Damn!....I loved that Don said 'fuck it', and got in the car, without his 'things, i.e., Pete, his N.Y. life...definetly a temp escape for him(and what was the meaning behind the buis meeting with the missile presentation, and Don's fearfull look? A war vet realizing the sad nature of war? And, what about him staring at the crack in the glass in the pool? Anyone grasp that meaning?) Yeah, Don hasn't slept with another chick in a while, but hey....Joy HAD to get it....(And to all the talkbackers who salivate over January Jones, and can't see why Don would cheat, well, I could have Halle Berry at home, but I still would hit Salma Hayek...sorry, guess I'm a bastard)....what was the subtext of the book Joy was reading? And the frenchman and the kids? How creepy was the 'father' reveal, and what a crazy place(in bed) to have it revealed to Don? Also, love the camera angle that showed Don passing out, never seen that on a TV show before...very expressive...whoever Joy and her people were, they obviously share the same type of personality as Don("We're Nomads", and "he likes you, you don't talk too much")...I got a real' Pierce Patchet' from L.A. Confidential feel from them at first, like a call-girl service....
Any guesses of who Mr. Whitman was talking to? My money's on a past love, possibly the ex 'Miss Whitman'?, who was too afraid to make that leap to big New York with Dick? -
He's such an incredible prick. His "Hey, ladies..." moment was just sad. Interesting he just kept Don's disappearance to himself for now. Sal's moment in the conference room said so much. Flipping through a Playboy disinterested, and then giving up and complaining about "Loretta Young" instead. I dunno what that show was, but it sure sounds like something a gay guy would complain about.Um, what's with the suggestion about Peggy going after Ken? That didn't happen at all. The closest we got was Ken saying she doesn't smell. By the way, its interesting to me that Peggy is now more or less accepted by the guys, and they even seem to kinda like her.

The Nomads comment was key for Don. It's excatly what he has been and now he has to decide whether to keep moving on, or really commit to his family.
And the warheads thing...Most of you all are too young to remember living under the threat of potentially instantaneous destruction, but the fact that the horror of it had such an impact on Don is a good sign for the state of his soul -- at least long term. -
by this episode? I liked everything, especially Duck succumbing to the dark side of alcohol. Mark Moses played the scene at the restaurant with just the touch. I understand the concept of "The Nomads", and Don's desire to leave it all behind to join them, and his libido needing someone like Joy. It was the cast of characters of the nomads, the visicount, doctor, Carlos, etc. that were drawn like a parody of a bad foriegn film. And Don seemed to view them with a bemused detachment, more than being drawn to them.

Laura Ramsey played Joy. She's the blonde in "The Ruins", didn't even recognize her.

There seemed to be a "European" theme running through the show, or, with the whole Soviet slideshow, an "International" theme...the Italian casually coming out of the closet, the Palm Spring "nomads", Duck's old employers (wasn't that Mr. Sheffield?). They all swept in and subtly and not-so-subtly changed or seem to be about to change things...including Peggy's hairstyle!

Betty has curves and a large bustline. The 1950's style of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield. Joy is built like a pixie/dancer. Being European means she also references the mid-1960's style of Twiggy. Also, that she has no hang-ups about sex foreshadows the coming sexual revolution.I too got a "pimp" feel from "The Nomads", and I think the broken glass showed that the real owners of the house had been gone for several weeks, maybe even months. None of it was real.Peggy getting her hair cut by a gay man was a bit stereotypical, but with it turning out to be the "Jackie Kennedy Flip", the point was how The First Lady's style and image was seeping into the larger culture.I just started watching a few weeks ago, who old is the neighbor boy who has a crush on January Jones. If the final year of the show is set in 1968, that could make things very interesting.-----later-----m

I sorta wanted more of Pete and Don but Duck's development has me interested. I'm worried they're going to minimize Roger though. Slattery is always doing plays and stuff after all, maybe what's her name will inherit his shares of the company if he dies. I could see that being an arc they pursue next season or two.

I can't even comment on this episode because there was too much fantastic stuff going on. These last two episodes are going to be insane, and I love that Weiner has wrote or co-wrote pretty much every episode this season. And in regard to Herc's comment about Don firing his secretary leading to all of this...The firing of the secretary led to Jane, which led to Roger and Jane, which led to Roger divorced, which leads to his wife bleeding him dry and him needing to sell the company.

Don's new fling is the smoking hot Laura Ramsey. She gets naked in The Ruins. She's unbelievably hot but also a very talented actress. She was by far the best thing about that disappointing film. I knew I knew her from somewhere while watching it but the wig threw me off. Had to look it up.

I just love Don's casual hatred of Pete. Pete makes one comment about hanging with the ladies by the pool and Don threatens to fire him. Pete's a prick, but jeez, Don. Gotta love how he just completely ditched, Pete, too.

The whole thing was so awesome again. It's weird how pete is covering for Don ... I feel like though he has fucked with Don before, ultimately he really wants his approval. Don always thought he was a weasel - rightfully so - and really that's what drove Pete to get into it with Don. I think he actually sees him almost as father figure.The stuff with Joy was very interesting. Pretty subtly disturbing too ... I wondered if it was a dream or something, but it seemed too detailed. But there was a surreal element to it. Can't WAIT for next week.

each episode seems to out do the previous. Every plot point is so subtle, you really have to pay attention. And the character play is awesome, every actor seems to live and breathe their role perfectly. definetly one of the shows that requires repeated viewing

Enjoyed the episode. Had the weird drunk rabbithole time-dilation feel, but in a good way. I've hit a couple eps that felt like forever, and they were lesser eps. This one was... kinda hot. Wifey was trying to put a finger on it and I had to synthesize it as the "Europeans are... different" episode. The scene with the "coming out" over donuts was priceless.

Finally just got to watch and several things come to mind. 1. The girls in this show are ridiculous. Second only to Smallville's chicks among active shows. 2. Duck Phillips is becoming the villian that Pete couldn't become last season. Comparable to Joker and Lex Luthor? Could be around the corner. 3. The slutty chick Don was with and her father = eww/wow. 4. The openly gay hairdresser very exciting writing. I'm hopeful the next 2 episodes might up the ante even more. Although Dexter is still way better Herc.
