‘You’ve Been Cuckolded By A Stronger, Smarter Male!!’ Herc Insists Tonight’s OFFICE Is One Of Funniest Ever Aired!!

Published at:  Oct 09, 2008 5:13:12 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Thursday’s installment of “The Office,” titled “Business Ethics,” is hilarious, one of the best aired on NBC to date.

It’s loaded with laugh-out-loud moments, none funnier than those derived from Jim’s scheme to expose Dwight’s hypocrisy.

Details:

* I’m guessing this is the first episode of the series not to feature any new footage of Jenna Fischer’s face! (She does, however, earn at lest two big laughs this week via telephone.)

* Creed gets a HUGE laugh (from me) in the teaser, but curiously is not accused of any ethics violations.

* Also getting huge laughs? A salad. A sack of leftovers. A coffee pot. And a cola bottle.

* As new HR rep Holly Flax describes the recent “misconduct at corporate” and firing that precipitated her ethics meeting, new receptionist Ryan Howard makes eye contact with the camera from the back of the conference room.

* No Toby this week.

Deleted scenes from the season premiere:

9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

    I loved the Dinner Party

    by scottindc

Yes, it was painfully awkward and ended with one nasty blowout fight. But THAT'S THE POINT. It was supposed to be awkward because it was a turning point in the show and the way Michael relates to Jan (albeit short lived since she got pregnant). But everything from his being forced to sleep on the lounger to the tiny flat screen that he could "stand and watch for hours" was hilarious. And you can't watch it by itself..it has to be watched alongside the 'deposition' episode since both stories and character behaviors are inexorably linked.

    by danielkurland

it's the only episode that seems like it could have been an episode of the British original. That's how uncomfortable it is. I can understand how people are split on it though. It doesn't have as many "Jokes" as other episodes; the humor is just in how awkward it all is. It's actually a very depressing episode.

KXAN (the Austin NBC affiliate) has pulled their signal from Time Warner in a dispute over compensation. So instead of The Office we are treated to Starz Family. If you have access to another cable provider or an analog antenna you're fine. However if you're access is through Time Warner you're screwed like me. However, I'm more than happy to watch it online on Friday than have Time Warner give in to a local affiliate on a power trip!

And really, it got less uncomfortable on this viewing. I guess, I got more time to appreciate every single nuiance instead of just feeling like, "Run away, Micheal!". The best moment for me - other than Jan putting away the video camera & Micheal curling up on his trundle bed - was when the cops came and Dwight goes, "Let me handle this" and the cop dismisses him, "Not now Dwight."

Liked the NBC version at first, now I'm beyond bored with it. It just is NOWHERE NEAR as funny as the original BBC version. Its clearly been dumbed down for American audiences -- ratcheting up the slapstick, and using characters so completely exaggerated and over-the-top that they barely resemble human beings at all. I knew this was going to happen when the announcement was made than an American version was coming. Too bad, so sad, walk away, nothing to see here.

I can't watch it either. Don't blame KXAN, blame Time Warner. They charge for that signal whether KXAN gets it for free or not. That's right, you are paying for KXAN even though Time Warner recieved it for free. All KXAN is doing is getting a piece of an already existent pie. And the idea that Time Warner would actually pass whatever KXAN would charge on to the customers offends me. I will not be a time warner customer much longer.

as I did at Dinner Party. I did it practically hiding behind a pillow from the cringe-inducing awkwardness of it, but it was totally and completely brilliant. From the cheesy Hunter music to the postage-stamp sized LCD. It was a different vibe than the usual episode, but totally vanguard.

I Suppose It Depends Upon Your Taste In Humor

    by laserpants

If you like social satire that skewers the mundanity of real life in ways that actually resemble reality, then you'll prefer the BBC version.
If, however, you need to be beaten over the head with sledgehammer-subtle slapstick delivered by grossly exaggerated characters that bare slim to no relationship to actual people, then you'll prefer the NBC version.
In short: BBC version is smart and funny; aimed at a more intelligent, literate audience. NBC version is dumb and mildly amusing; aimed at the knuckle-dragging lowest common denominator.

I hate to get into a huge debate about this but I've been itching to start one....haha! I could understand KXAN's position if Time Warner was paying the other affiliates and not them. But KXAN's argument (according to their website) is that since Time Warner pays CABLE channels (not broadcast channels) for their signal they should receive payment as well. That argument doesn't fly with me. If Time Warner gives in this will set a precedent for other local affiliates and will only lead to higher cable prices. Thanks for the chance to debate Cotton. Bring it on! :-)

Because, well, if you do, then I have to honestly ask what do you watch on television?

I am, um, well, I run an office and sometimes I am so embarrassed when I see myself in Michael. Another office manager told me he can't even watch it because it hits too close to home. To say the characters are nothing like reality is just so wrong.

Except, I guess, reality is..relative? Different for everyone. I guess my office staff is just that nuts. And I am Michael, God help me.

    The best episode ever:

    by mraig

If you're in the mood for sad/funny: Boys and Girls. If you're in the mood for funny: Drug Testing. Both come from Season 2. Both episodes this season have been okay. Last night's show actually had a fairly sophisticated (as these things go) look at what business ethics is. Meredith was sleeping with someone to get a discount, and Holly, who understands the rules and guidelines, considers this unethical, and thinks that, if you're going to follow company policies strictly, Meredith should be fired. The people down at the bottom don't think she should be, because they understand that she's a single mom with no other source of income (this is the question of morals vs. ethics). This point of view was represented by Michael. The people at the top--represented by the guy at corporate on the phone--don't have a problem with it because she's saving the company money, which, ultimately, is all they care about. The fact that Holly believes in the policy as a policy--that she sees the value of a rule as a rule, as a standard to hold herself and her coworkers up to--shows a lot about her character. And I think her position is one we've all been in: nobody in the world agrees with her, and yet she's so sure that she's right. Of course, none of that stuff makes for particularly great COMEDY, but this show is often more of drama in comedy's clothing than a straight comedy. I liked Ryan's comment about the girl from Survivor, Dwight's response to Andy, Jim's BSG description, Michael dumping the salad into the trash can. It was not bad.

    by magnum opus

by a great stretch. As much as I love The Office all of the material just seems old and rehashed at this point. I laughed at Jim's version of Battlestar...and that's it. Over-the-top broad comedy Michael is the opposite of intelligent humor when not handled properly.

Sorry, not seeing it. It was a decent episode, but nowhere near one of the best.

Herc...I'll defend ya...It was UP there with the best!

    by cheif brody

I did LOL many times this episode (It's been a while)...But I liked that they got back to the core of staying IN the office...(with the exception of Holly & Michael's 'business romantic' lunch)...
The episodes that don't work as well for me are the road trip ones...and the trips to the hospital ones...and the run to cure rabies ones....where the actual office is nowhere to be found. Last nite's ep had great lines one after another...and actually gave Meredith something funny to say...(Normally she's the site gag)...
I LOVE they had the balls to put Pam on the back burner...and we didn't need to see her in NYC. I LOVE that Holly got served by corporate HR...which explains Toby's frustration...and how Michael has kept his job for so long. Glad there was no pregnant Jan...It just really fely like the BBC version for the first time in a while. That's a good thing.
The Best? Probably not...but Herc's allowed to have a frickin' opinion, fer Christ's sake!

Why it was a pretty good episode...

    by mel gibsteinberg

For laughs, I will give you that the only truly laugh out loud moment was Jim timing Dwight and frustrating him with innacuracies on BSG. "I understand its just a shot for shot re-make!" But what made this show great was the bizzare dynamics of Michael and Holly as they worked through their "friendship." All of a sudden you realize that Holly really is a weirdo, and maybe her and Michael do make sense, but then you realize that Michael is so unbelievably selfish and unaware that maybe the only person he deserves is Jan. Holly is better for Michael, but saddling Holly with Michael seems almost cruel. Reminds me of that great line that Pam said when Andy was first trying to get with Angela. "I couldn't do that to Dwight, or Andy...or Angela for that matter."

    Jesus, HERC.

    by gravitysrainbow

If you are going to throw about that claim, at least be mildly right. That episode was far from the best. Take whichever half opener from the season premiere and that's even a better episode than this one! You're more than entitled to your opinion, but to be honest, I came away from this episode pissed off because of your hype. Before you make a mention of how that shouldn't factor into my viewing, consider that as a daily visitor of this site, I consider you one of the go-to guys for TV. (Even though there's a conspicuous abscence of "Sunny" TBs...)

Yeah, that part was great. Solid episode, but there are at least 30 that are better than this one though.

Dinner Party WAS the best episode ever

    by snowdogs

By a country mile. It was the funniest and most memorable. Last night's episode had moments (the announcement of the engagement and the Battlestar Galactica scene) but it didn't touch Dinner Party.

  • Wouldn't put it in my top 5, but solid episode nonetheless, because all episodes of The Office are solid. But, funniest ever? Eh...to each his own, I guess.

good god almighty, the scene with Jim talking to Andy about Battlestar Galactica and Dwight's reactions was maybe the funniest beat of the series..oh my LORD, I was dying. I had to go back and rewatch it like 3 times because I was laughing over so many of the lines. Dumbeldore Callrision? I mean, jesus if that doesn't make you laugh, you are dead.well, here, watch it for yourself on youtube...

RED ISN'T THE BEST COLOR ASSHOLE! YELLOW IS!

    by david cloverfield

Leave it to talkbackers to argue such a subjective opinion. "IT WASN'T THE BEST EVARR! YOU'RE STUPID!" It's like arguing about what's funny and what's not. It was a neato episode though, I laughed all the way.
