For First Time Ever, OSCAR Telecast To Feature Movie Ads, SUPER BOWL-Style!!’

Published at:  Oct 08, 2008 7:45:01 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Something certain to send Oscar ratings soaring!

Once concerned that sponsorship might appear to influence voting, organizers have always banned from the Oscar telecast commercials promoting movies – until now.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences board of governors will, starting in 2009, allow one 30- or 60-second ad per studio for a film opening the last week of April 2009 or later.

The ads must never have run elsewhere prior to the telecast.

Doubt it'll impact ratings that much, 'specially since the ads will be on YouTube just as quickly.

"Oscar" shouldn't be mentioned near the "Superbowl"

    by tallboy66

The Superbowl everybody loves (generally) and ratings are always spectacular. It's a true event across the country. Then there's the Oscars that bleeds viewers every year and hasn't had a decent host for decades. No contest.

    Super Bowl > Oscars

    by mr spork

And why will TDK get any nominations? If it does, it'll be some award done off-camera.

Movies few have seen and/or heard of usually win, anyway. That's why people don't watch. Like last year's Best Actress winner, who in the general public had ever heard of her or her movie?

    SPRINGSTEEN

    by the insneider

Pretty interesting that Bruce Springsteen will (most likely) be playing at the year's two biggest ratings draws, the Super Bowl and the Oscars, within a month of each other. Saw The Wrestler last night and his song that closes the credits is a shoo-in for a nomination.

This won't help ratings at all

    by catlettuce4

The commercials may help the ratings for the superbowl because it gives people who dont necessarily care about football a reason to watch.

On the other hand, people who care enough about movies to watch anything for commericals are already going to watch the Oscars.

If they really want to up the ratings they need to get better hosts and stop rewarding films that at least half of the viewing audience doesn't give a shit about.

    by truecoat

I always wondered why they didn't do this before. Let's face it, you have a captive audience for the most part of 3-4 hours. Why not advertise your upcoming releases? It only made sense and I want to see them!!! Show me something that no one knows about ala the TR2N trailer. All I can say is bring it on!!!

country has to offer, before the automobile industry went to shit it doesn't surprise me. Esp. since the elephants have ruined this once great country we have the East to take over our dominance. The 19th century went to Europe. the 20th was all ours. And now 21st is Asia and India and maybe even Russia sadly. Lessen learned: vote dokeys for gods sake in November!!!!

Why are you posting about Supernatural beneath posts that have nothing to do with Supernatural? We posted a perfectly good Supernatural story in Coax last Thursday. There's also a Supernatural forum in The Zone. There are also probably entire websites and newsgroups devoted exclusively to Supernatural. What are you waiting for?

Hercules, I think Chrth would like a regular Supernatural TB

    by amy chasing

like the Heroes or Mad Men ones. The point of posting here is that that sort of TB does not exist for Supernatural. Nor does it for House, Chuck, No Heroics, Merlin, Big Bang Theory, Terminator and True Blood. Not that I'm complaining or anything - after all there are other perfectly good (and quiet) TBs to hijack. Case in point this one.

At least when I bring up SUPERNATURAL...

    by shermdawg

...I try to tie it in with the subject at hand...or where the discussion may have led to. And THIS certainly isn't a talkback that needed a SUPERNATURAL mention. And once again Herc, ya gotta realize...while The Zone is a fine community, it's a totally different community than this section of AICN. If you give a spotlight to shows that get ripped on constantly like Heroes and Smallville, why not give a regular talkback to a show that has recieved countless praise from talkbackers? And Amy Supernatural is better than several of the shows you listed. Which ones? I'll never tell. Now, back to the Oscars...

    TDK will win Best Picture

    by tenenbaum

The Academy Awards have been a ratings dog for the last few years, mostly due to the Academy nominating films most people never see. The Academy can turn the show into a ratings bonanza by nominating TDK, a well-reviewed film that everyone saw, featuring an Oscar worthy performance by a tragically deceased young actor. TDK wins Best Picture and the Academy ingratiates itself back to the unwashed masses for another few years.

Why is it that a Star Wars or Star Trek movie never wins

    by nyj_et

for Best Costume design? These types of movies have to design a wardrobe from the ground up. If Captain Kirk is wearing a pair of jeans, they have to at least look like their jeans from the 23rd. century. The award almost always seems to go to some period-piece. All they're doing is reconstructing clothing according to historical record. Not nearly the imagination it takes to do a Star Trek/Wars or Alien or even RoboCop movie. They're all rigged.
