Would You Believe...?? Of Course You Would...Warners Is Spinning Up A GET SMART Sequel!!

Published at:  Oct 07, 2008 11:03:14 AM CDT

Merrick here...

The Powers That Be have been clear that sequel to Steve Carell's GET SMART movie was feasible. Now, it seems, the project is one step closer to inevitable.

An almost throwaway reference to another Carell-driven GET SMART movie comes from a Variety piece about Carell's new three year, first-look deal with Warners.

The studio is mobilizing a sequel for Carell to return as Maxwell Smart.

...says THIS VARIETY ARTICLE, which also indicated the SAMRT sequel exists outside of Carell's arrangement with the studio.

Let the titling begin!

    by marillion

last week on a transcontinental flight... I'm not a big Carrell fan or a big fan of the OS, but I have to say I really found myself laughing out loud at a lot of the movie. In reality, I liked it so much I took the wife and kiddos to see it in the dollar theatre this past weekend as well.

I though Anne did a nice job playing an older character and looked HOT in the evening gown!

Haters can protest, but I even liked the Rock's performance. I'm sad it ended the way it did because he'd be enjoyable to see again in a supporting roll.

    by marillion

This only works IF they DON'T do what Scooby Doo and Charlie's Angels did by making the sequel take itself too seriously.

Both of the originals were an homage to the original series.. Almost spoofs in many ways.

But in the sequels, even though there are reference points to the original series, the movies tried to come off as bigger and badder.

While no one wants to see exactly the same thing, you can't lose the original intent of the first movie. Sorry this sounds confusing.. I'll shut up now...

    by flickchick85

However, why the hell did they fast-forward the Max and 99 relationship? I mean, they practically got married and rode off into the sunset. All they needed for a satisfying happy ending was to have them as permanent partners (and happy about it), maybe just hinting at a future romance. That whole montage where 99 realizes she's in love with Max when thinking he was dead was where the movie went off the rails.

Their was nothing wrong with Get Smart. I thought it was one of the few if any of the old tv shows turned movie that worked. I don't remember a lot of the old shows but the Carell driven movie was an entertainig comedy and it was modernized and again it worked. If guess if you're not a fan of Carell then you wouldn't like the movie, but i'm all up for a sequel.

I don't get all the bitching about movies like this. It was EXACTLY what I expected it to be. People always act like movies like this are so disappointing, but what, do you think it's going to a masterpiece? A summer-remake vehicle for Steve Carell? If you're the kind of person that's going to bitch about movies like this, obviously you know what kind of movie you are going to see, so why would you see it in the first place? Oh, so you can come online and bitch about it. Sorry, I get it now. I don't get people who think every even slightly sub-par film is an abomination or the worst movie ever made. Instead of shelling out ten bucks to see something you're gonna hate, go watch Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or Charade, or something.

Is anybody else with me? Sick of all the bitching?

Actually, GET SAMRT would be an awesome title.

    by jonquixote

Without a sequel, we will not see any new Maxwell Smart.. ever. And even if we do, the odds of it being better than the one we got are thin. The truth is, Carell was born to fill Don Adams' shoes. *** Not grading on a curve, I found the movie affable. For an "action-comedy based on an old tv series" I found it fantastic. Compared to... I SPY? BEWITCHED? STARSKY AND HUTCH? GET SMART was the freakin' CITIZEN KANE of repackaged lukewarm tv to movie franchises. The cast was top notch. It was *pretty* funny. And I thought they did some interesting (if not exactly revolutionary) things in 'updating' Max and 99. *** I want to see a sequel. Steve Carell is a talented, likable, funny actor and I don't think we're likely to see a better vehicle for him.
