    by danielkurland

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the emotional intensity and general uneasiness of these past few episodes, but Pete is a great character, and he hasn't been featured nearly as well as he was in season 1. Hunting/marriage monologue anyone?

But my Church is a box with a screen. Football in the afternoon (and baseball playoffs for this month). Entourage, Dexter and Mad Men. Ain't no mountain high enough. How sweet it is.

Seriously, AMC has got it down. Between MM, Breaking Bad and their upcoming Prisoner remake, I couldn't recall last time I was interested in EVERYTHING a channel was producing.

Don't get me wrong, Pete is a great character, and a likely antagonist to just about everyone on the show simply because he is looking out for himself and no one else. But goddamnit he's a sneaky little bastard! Which is precisely why he's such a great character. I love to hate him. Just about every character on this show does things that the average person would consider bad, but then there's this one character(Pete)who's out to ruin them all if it will further his personal goals and increase his status.

    by thunderbolt ross

He's a great character to a degree. I actually think it's best they don't focus on him too often, as he can be a bit much at times. He's as close to cliche as the show comes, but is fun in smallish doses.

When the encore presenation started I caught Marti Noxon's name and I yelped! This episode was SO amazing to me. I mean, they all are, but there was so much in this one. I find January Jones to be so watchable. I love her quiet moments. She IS so profoundly sad. I love that this show allows itself to just be... quiet. And so often. There's just a tone and feeling that this show captures that's unlike anything else. Wow.

I don't know what to say anymore. Every episode this season has been top-notch. Pete's drunken talk with Peggy was so bizarre and so great ... Betty and her dad, Betty and Don, Betty and that kid, Betty and the kid's mom. That last shot. Pretty much everything in between too.I didn't realize there were only three episodes left. So sad.

... is kind of okay with me here. I'd rather have high quality conversation than a large quantity of "January Jones, how I want to jump your bones." Even if that particular statement is true.

And that kid, Glen, is awesome. Betty's perfect foil.

    by exie

Seriously, I don't know how they do it every week. Some of the best acting on TV ever, not to mention the writing. I cannot wait to see Pete and Don in LA. I thought tonight was a Betty tour de force. Every single scene she was in was heartbreaking. She is truly the loneliest character in TV history. I also find it very interesting that Don hasn't cheated on her once since she kicked him out. I wonder if LA brings the dog back out in him.

What a great character! A riddle, wrapped in an enigma slicked down with Brylcreem! After a lifetime of following the rules and getting nowhere (beyond being stuck in a cubicle as the last vestiges of imagination and creativity are slowly quashed from my being), I've finally learned the only way to get ahead in this world is to lie, lie some more and if caught, continue to lie! Thank you Don--you're my hero!

You are absolutely right in my opinion. During the first episode of Mad Men, my first thought about Hamm was that he could be a great Man of Steel. I thought Routh was OK, but he looked a bit young for the part. I think Alex Ross' take on the character is closest to my imagination and Hamm has a close resemblance to Ross' art.

There's a great Betty scene in season one...

    by danielkurland

That I feel is even more impactful now, since her character is a lot more developed. That ending to the episode though where she's smoking the cigarette and shooting the rifle. It's such a nice little scene, and something that thematically would even fit in now.

    by powers boothe

Their scenes together always have a Blue Velvet vibe to 'em. I wonder where the writers are going with that. Good stuff. While I understand Pete's a huge fan favourite, personally it's Betty for me. Truly heartbreaking stuff. I see a little mental illness in her future. Right?

    Betty

    by wenchy

I don't think she is headed toward mental illness. I think she has been trying to live this perfect Wind Up Doll life women had to live back then when careers were barely an option and marriage/family was the only choice really and if you got a divorce you were practically a pariah.

But underneath the perfect exterior is a real person who realizes how much it sucks to be home, starching your husbands shirts and raising the kids practically alone and realizing he is cheating on you and possibly does not even love you. She wants him to make some real declaration of his love and he is not doing that. he just keeps asking “what do you want me to say”.

I think she wants to scream but a lifetime of conditioning to be ladylike and demure and fit into the herd is preventing her. She can’t decide ifiliving in a loveless marriage is worth “keeping up appearances” or if she is strong enough to go it on her own. If this was 2008 she ’d have hired a shark of a divorce lawyer by now.

The civil war flashback was great. I am disappointed the relationship between Bill and Sookie seems to have died down for now, they had good chemistry. The show is all over the place - romance, kinky sex, violence, drugs, murder - the transitions are bit jarring sometimes but ultimately it's all good!

I think Sookie realized again why she likes Bill so much after his Q&A with the town folk. I think they will get back together again but who knows after what happened to her Grams. BTW, loved when Lafayette kicked the shit out of the rednecks.

Given the year (1962) and the title of the season finale (Meditations during an Emergency), the season finale is almost assuredly going to take place during the Cuban Missile Crisis (October '62). Kennedy won't be dead for another 13 months.

Noticed her name in the credits on the September 14th episode. She's also involved in Private Practice, so I guess it's her ying and yang of series involvement.Creepiest scene had to be Betty's Dad casually pawing at her to "head upstairs", and Glen eyeing her on the couch.I would love to see this series carry through the decade. I predict some fucked-up preteen years for Don and Betty's kids.

    Thoughts...

    by danielkurland

I find True Blood really strange. I enjoyed the pilot a lot, but I feel some scenes, especially that at the vampire house at the beginning of episode 3 are really poorly written. Which is strange because Alan Ball is by no means a bad writer. Interestingly enough, episode 4 was when I really started to enjoy everything and Ball didn't even write that one. Back to Mad Men...all of the stuff with Betty's dad was so uncomfortable, especially the aforementioned groping. I just felt so bad for everyone there. The scene with Pete and his brother at their mom's was the same sort of thing. I know I go on a lot about Pete here, but Betty definitely is my favorite. I went on a lot about her last year where her condition was only hinted at, with her hand twitch and all of that, but she's featured so prominently here, I don't feel it's as necessary to talk about her, as it's obvious she's great. Her brief flirtation and interest with call girls in the pilot really made me think she'd be going down that route, which hasn't happened. I definitely wouldn't have been surprised to see a depressed Pete pay a call girl Betty for sex, not knowing she's Don's wife. They've never met before, have they?

... to me it just seems a little too formulaic and mannered. Yeah, yeah, I get it... things really changed a lot in the 60's. The advertising industry has us all brainwashed even still. Got it. (Yawn) Maybe because I work in the ad biz, it's no revelation to me. Still, the show's execution and performances are excellent so I'll keep watching. Wonder when everyone will start showing up in miniskirts, bell bottoms and sideburns? Figure it'll be in another season or two... oughta be good for laughs, anyway.

I realllllly don't think there's supposed to be any great revelations about advertising being ... well, being what it is. In fact, I think it's fair to say there is pretty much no attempted insight into the advertising world, but it's used as a dynamic backdrop and an indication of perceptions changing. Plus lying for a living makes for interesting characters.
