The DRAGONBALL Teaser Pretty Much Sucks, But...
Merrick here...
The teaser for the (can't get no respect) DRAGONBALL movie adaptation has shown-up over at dbthemovie.com.
It's looking pretty thin if you ask me, although being caught in a Bulma/Mai sandwich wouldn't be altogether objectionable. And if that's not the zenith of film/marketing analysis, I don't know what is.

DBZ is perhaps the worst anime I've ever seen, and the movie is a piss-poor adaptation of that. No one here seemed remotely interested. So why give any press to this?

Admittedly it been a long time since I watched any DBZ, but I only recognized Goku and Piccolo from the trailer. Who were the rest of those fools dancing around pretending to know some kind of Martial Arts.. If your going to fill the movies with a bunch of secondary characters no one cares about, at least put in the perverted pig guy who likes to steal panties. Or was that DB and not DBZ..
And how hard is it to make Piccolo look like he did in the Anime, he a green skin lizard looking guy, not a Cenobite from Hellrasier.

Y'know, one of the guys who created "Space: Above And Beyond" (a.k.a. what BSG tries so hard to be but fails with every single second of it), where responsible that "Millenium" was one of the greatest series ever and made "Final Destination"(a.k.a. that one modern teenhorrormovie that doesn't suck).

...but speed racer is more like what dragonball should be. not a dark mortal kombat/kung fu movie with real moves, but an exaggerated computer effects laden movie. when i think of dragon ball, i think of floating in the air, energy blasts, sky streaking, shouting and ridiculous fights (basically one guy frantically punching or kicking and someone else standing there and blocking and laughing. for like 100 episodes. the cartoon does suck, but if the movie was true to formula it may be entertaining. this just looks like they didn't even try. maybe someone thought 'gee, let's make the batman begins of dragonball- have it be bare bones realistic and dark looking'.idiots...

shouldn't leave the format in which they were created. Dragonball will only ever work as animated fare because the budget needed to do a live action version properly would never be secured. The money that will be spent on this travesty would be better spent redubbing the shitty Funimation version of the anime since the Vegeta Saga and part of the Ginyu Saga are the only dubs they got right out of the whole series.

Chow Yun Fat in a gay crackhead bath house than this steamer.It looks like the trailer for a new Mortal Kombat flick. I don't expect a moving tribute to the Last Emperor, but this does look like Velveeta.

Dragon Ball looks like a cheap Hong Kong movie, because it was shot that way. -

What was the budget for this movie? It looks like it has the quality of an episode of Heroes (I also thought the trailer evoked Power Rangers quite a bit). I was kinda thinking this might've been a cool movie, but it looks like I'd be better off watching D-Wars again (man was that a shitty movie).

was so positive and happy go lucky as a kid. Seriously, why would you change that? He was so positive in the face of danger. He doesn't have doubts. He's light-hearted and almost goofy sometimes. Maybe he got a little more serious in DBZ, but not in Dragonball. Oh, and they should have picked an actor to play Piccolo that would be worth keeping around for future movies, that guy looks 100 years old. However, I'm willing to give it a shot...

I remember how psyched I was for that movie as a kid. I enjoyed the hell out of it when I was 8. But catching it later on tv as an adult, you realize it's a piece of shit. I imagine alot of DBZ fans who are kids right now will experience the same thing.

Kinda strikes a similar vibe to the old live action Mortal Kombat TV series. Where pretty much nothing ever happened while actors exchanged terrible dialogue on cheap looking sets.
The only way to make the movie work would have been to give it the Speed Racer treatment....make it into a live action cartoon, with all the weirdness and fun that comes with it. -
Dragonball should have been done more like what they're doing with Tintin. Of course, who'd pony up the cash for that?

How bad this movie is going to suck. I really think any one competent could make a decent DBZ movie. All you have to do is respect the animations and take it seriously enough that its bad ass. I really don't think it would be terrible difficult. Do the Saiyan Saga in one movie, Frieza next if it does well, then Cell, then Buu. I'm sad this movie is such terrible idiotic schlock. We're past the time where a movie is allowed to look like this. I think the proper term for this point in time is a Post-Dark Knight landscape.

The movie has hot asian girls and a really cute Emmy Whatshername. I'll see it just for them. It doesn't matter anymore if they look nothing like the cartoon, after Transformers, G.I. Joe, X-men, etc, I'm used to the fact that Hollywood butchers every property they touch. But, at least Dragonball has HOT ASIAN GIRLS IN TIGHT, SKIMPY COSTUMES!

But This sounds worse then MAsters of the Universe, At least Frank Langella was good. Kungo_fu Hustle and The Matrix was the blueprint for a DBZ movie and they seem to have ignored it.

That trailer doesn't give ANY feeling as to the asthetic of the film. It doesn't have any tension, and it uses pretty cheap looking graphic cut aways. It really doesn't even seem to be for a film, just a collection of images. So really, I don't have anything to say about it, other than its a fucking shitty trailer. Maybe if they come up with something to show me that actually solidifies that theres a movie behind it, then I'll be dissapointed or impressed.

Doesn't even look like anyone can fly. I remember the main appeal of the TV show were the ridiculous explosions. They took the destructions to an insane level and that was about it. The movie looks like wire-fu with some terrible costumes. Does Chow Yun Fat have gambling debts or something?

I've watched DBZ. This should be an indie art flick. The entire movie would basically just be all of the warrior just standing around talking about their and the other fighters' power and contemplating powering up for an attack and contemplating what's going to happen if they lose, etc. ad infinitum. If you have seen BBZ, you know that "battle" is practically irrelevant compared to all of the build up to the battle. The movie should END with them just starting a battle.

You know what looked good? 300. The Dark Knight. Batman Begins. the first Spider-Man. Lord of the Rings. Why do I mention these movies? Because they are film Adaptations fairly true to the source material. And don't give me the webshooter controversy cuz in spiderman they stayed TRUE TO THE CHARACTER! Goko never went to school, he was raised in the wilderness! He can't drive even as an adult he can't drive. He barely ever wears anything besides that training uniform. This film could have had such potential. Yeah yeah it's a trailer i know I'm not an idiot but I'm also an actor and an artist and I know crap when I see it. Someone got it right when they said the production value looked like it didn't eclipse 1 million.
It's ridiculous when your source material gives you characters that can do LITERALLY ALMOST ANYTHING AND YOU HAVE THEM DOING FLIPS IN THE AIR!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? There are barely any real names in this movie so they obviously didn't spend any money on actors. I saw little to no effects so theres no money there. WHERE IS THE IMAGINATION? WHERE FOR GODSAKES?! PATHETIC! THATS HOW YOU GRAB AN AUDIENCES ATTENTION?! I LOVE THE DRAGONBALL SERIES I LOVE DRAGONBALL Z. WHAT THAT WAS, WAS NOT IT, NOT EVEN CLOSE. I COULD HAVE MADE THAT IN MY FRIGGIN BASEMENT! You wanna see what Dragonball could be go watch SHAOLIN SOCCER. Watch the last fight sequence between Neo and Agent Smith in the Matrix Revolutions. That was power rangers with obvious stunt doubles, where the camera is so far away thats theres no way that you can see the face of another person. this is ridiculous. FOX...wow. Real quality right there. Oh I am just soooooooooo impressed. These actors should be ashamed to be in this movie. I am beside myself with the garbage that I watched on Friday. That's film making? Film is an art. An ART! That was like watching my dog lick his gentials..but worse. That was worse than watching the cubs get swept, or watching Bush btcher the english language. How friggin dare you try to sneak that past us? After seeing Iron Man and the Dark Knight when it IS PROVEN THAT QUALITY SELLS YOU TRY AND DO THE LEAST QUALITY WORK YOU POSSIBLY CAN. MY ADVICE? SCAP THIS MOVIE. FIND AN ACTUAL WRITER, AND ACTUAL DIRECTOR WHO WILL BRING IN THEIR PEOPLE, THEIR CINEMATOGRAPHERS, AND DO IT RIGHT! WE AS CONSUMERS DEMAND QUALITY! I WILL NOT, I REPEAT, WILL NOT SEE THIS MOVIE! I WILL ADVISE AND ALREADY HAVE BEGUN ADVISING MY FRIENDS TO AVOID THIS MASSACRE ON THE SENSES.
