Why are there other musicians? Why didn't UHF make $99,000,000,000.00? ARGH!!!!

The song is called THE SAGA BEGINS, and you can download the song and the video At this ultra groovy website which is a parody of the entire WWW.STARWARS.COM! The music video is available streamed

People of Foriegn countries! People that haven't seen THE PHANTOM MENACE... Beware. The entire plotline of the film is described point for point through this song and lest you get irrationally mad at Al.... I'm warning you! Save it for the DAY AFTER!

What the-- !? 'Weird Al' Kicks Ass!

    by darth mallrat

"Weird Al" Yankovic has sold more COMEDY albums then ANYBODY!- EVER! So I doubt he'll be "behind the counter" at "Ralph's" anytime soon.... *BUZZ* Thanks for playing though, eXcreMENt... & I know many a fanboy hates it when Al PARODIES (look it up) something they hold sacred, wether it be a song or STAR WARS {gasp} -- somebody usually has to bitch about it. I for one am getting up EARLY Tuesday (6/29), heading to my favorite music store & picking up the new album: RUNNING WITH SCISSORS!

    Weird Al Rules!!!!!!

    by judius

I think it's about people started making fun of Phantom Menace. The movie was an embarassment to the Star Wars saga. Sure the film had good special effects but no story. The beginning of the film was rushed, five minutes into the movie theyre already swimming towards the underwater city?! Lets not forget those lame oriental aliens at the beginning. Can someone tell me whats the point of make computer animated characters if you're just gonna make them look like friggin muppets?! Sheesh, I think Kermit the frog's mouth matched his words more realistically than these guys!! As for Weird Al, he needs to make a comeback. He always has you rolling with laughter whenever he spoofs a video!! People should take this star wars spoof in good heart and the only people who won't like their star wars being made fun of are those poor pathetic people who walk around in star wars t-shirts with no lives and have real debates with their friends about who is better, Chewbaca or yoda!

  • I was expecting to see Weird Al on VH1's where are they now in the near future. UHF was funny and I loved that parody of Beverly Hillbillies crossed with the "Money for Nothing" video. If Austin Powers and the Waterboy can be massive hits, I think it's time Weird Al gets to do another feature.

Dang, you know just like other artists, they have to disappear to record the damn record. Plus, Al hasn't been too out of sight. His parodies of MTV Unplugged last year (or maybe it was this year) were funny as hell. And you WILL be seeing Weird Al on VH1, but it won't be on "where are they now". Al is being trailed for an upcoming "Behind the Scenes" shows. So now he's up there with the likes of the Bee Gees and Motley Crue :)

UHF is still one of the all time funniest movies I have ever seen. Al is a genius who seems to be able to do it all. There isn't any type of music he can't tackle. Is there nothing this man can't do?
Hell, I thought UHF was going to signal some kind of semi regular movie career on the side or something, but never since. Please, Weird AL, make UHF 2 or another movie! WEIRD AL RULES!!!

    by mr. bojangles

I have no clue why this guy is so popular. Some of his songs are kinda funny the first time you hear them, but why the hell would you want to buy an album?Once is enough, man!I agree with whoever said his MTV Unplugged parodies were funny. And I liked the shorter hair he was sporting in those ads. But that's about it. I can't believe this guy is going on tour.I live in NY, and I read that he's playing Jones Beach this summer. Why God, why? I'd rather pay to see that Alien from the Star Wars Pepsi ads sing showtunes! Ugh!

    Al in concert rocks!

    by ansai

Hey guys, if you've never seen Al in concert, you should - I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It's fun for kids too - he must have made 10 costume changes (yes, the Fat suit from Eat it ..)

The new song is OK (little forced) but Yoda is a classic!

And regarding the VH1 comment ... they're doing a 'Behind the music' about Al starting the week of July 4th. I'm not sure if it's going to be a mockumentary the way The Compleat Al was though.

    "The Saga Begins" on MuchMusic

    by moby

They showed it several days ago. Very funny, but not as funny as
"UHF", "Jurassic Park", "Like A Surgeon" or the movie UHF.

MTV will premiere it July 7th on TRL. Please start voting for the video after they premiere it.

VH1 will also air a timeline in addition to the "Behind the Music" July 4th.

Oh, and he already had a comeback with "Bad Hair Day" which sold 1.8 million in the US.

His CBS show was funny, but on the wrong network.

Weird Al rules & Star Wars politics

    by bigjackiev

This and "Yoda" are so great...so is the album Yoda is on...Dare to be Stupid (another great song, BTW). And Phantom Menace wasn't the worst of the series, I'd rather watch it than Jedi (Empire and the original are FAR FAR superior, of course). And to the guy who said Phantom Menace had better 'politics'...well, I don't wanna sound like super nerd looking for deep meaning because, frankly, there isn't any...but did the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo strike anyone as, well, WWII-esque. I mean, battle droids rolling their tanks through the big arch on the main street of Naboo...I dunno, looked like Paris. And the senator that becomes a monster and a great big war...yadda yadda...

    by kingkrypton

That STAR WARS video was a classic! Weird Al does it yet again with another cool parody. My only regret is that we didn't get to see him with a lightsaber. That would have been a scream!

Now if only LeAnn Rimes would cut a record called YOU LIGHT UP MY LIGHTSABER: FORCE-FUL SONGS, I'd be even happier!

    Another parody

    by edward peregrine

Radio station 98.7 in Los Angeles played a song a few times by an artist whose name I don't remember, backed by "The X-Swing Fighters." It was called "Star Wars Cantina," done to Barry Manilow's "Copacabana," and was more focused on the story of the first film. While uneven, it had some clever phrasings, and sampled from the movie a lot, which made it kinda cool. I haven't heard it lately, making me think the samples caused Lucasfilm to order a cease and desist on the song. Remember the days Lucas had a sense of humor? When MAD magazine parodied EMPIRE, inadvertently drawing a panel with Han Solo unfrozen, and Lucas himself wrote them asking if this meant he could skip doing JEDI? Or actively encouraged the online TROOPS parody? Those were the days...

Was the parodist who did "Star Wars Cantina". It was spelled "Johnathan" on the Dr. Demento CD I saw, anyway. ********** And I must admit, Weird Al puts on the *BEST* live concert show I have ever seen. EVER. Better than Pink Floyd and The Monkees put together. The Only thing that came close was the time I had front row center tix to see Sam Kinison... But that's another story.

    Al never disappeared

    by lister of smeg

Great to hear your fan of Al, Harry. Everytime he releases a new album, we hear the same old shit about "where has Al been all these years...blah blah blah." Hell, his last album was almost universally praised by critics and went platinum ninety days after it's release. Sure, he has some great parodies, but his originals are really the meat of his genius, whether they're totally original or his "Style" parodies. While agreed, the UHF soundtrack was far and away his best work ("The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" is perhaps one of greatest epic folk ballads ever written), he continues to write and produce quality hilarious material. I bought his first album in 1983 when I was twelve years old. Now I am 27 years old (no shit, Al fans, a coincidence) and have grown up watching Al break new ground in video and mature into an outstanding songwriter, musician, and producer.

    THIS VIDEO SUCKS

    by gontron

Harry, I'm sorry, I love your site But holy shit anyone who can be so blind as to like this video is a fucking retard! It's not funny in the slightest, he's just pretty much singing what happens in the movie. It doesn't take much genius to do that. And I'm not an anti Weired Al guy, I like most of his CD's But the difference there is that they are actually funny. The video is also quite boring and cheap. Ahhhhh! I hate that damed video!

    HEY!! Be nice!

    by theadore

I'm a huge "Star Wars" fan and an even bigger "Weird Al" Yankovic fan! And as a FAN of both, I loved SWI and The Saga Begins! They're great! And it's getting difficult to sit hear and read all these messages of people saying how much one or the other sucks! I mean, if you don't like it, that's okay because maybe it's not your cup of tea, but if you've got that big of a problem with them to the point where you come on about either SWI or TSB and say "oh this SUCKED" well I gotta ask you "why?!" Star Wars I was AWESOME, I came in expecting to be let down, but I was amazed! The effects, characters (Jar Jar too!), music, and especially the ammount of continuity... elements and terms not defined by Lucas himself but by the post-RJ novelists and others were readily incorporated. And The Saga Begins was just hilarious and overall well done! I *especially* liked the lyrics... I know most of Al's lyrics off by heart and if they weren't so funny I wouldn't even waste my time! I also liked the quick transition between the dunes and the Catanina (sp?), the whole video really did Don MacLean justice! (And American Pie is one of my favorite songs!) So hey brighten up a little people! It seems like all the AICN talkbacks are just for whiners and complainers. Fine, you don't like Al or SWI. Well don't rain on our parade, okay?? =)

    Weird Al

    by cyboman

I love Weird Al- and I must say he is in a very neat career nitch. Parodies are constitutionally protected speech- that's why you can use the EXACT SONG for the backing tracks but not run into any copyright hassles (George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord', anyone?) What this means for a parodist is that he or she has a supply of basic material that is LITERALLY ENDLESS. Our pop culture will keep setting them up, and Al will just keep knocking them down... Great career. Great mind. Great musical heritage, too, what with his father Frank and all. Weird Al, I wish I could construct parody as sharp as yours! THANK YOU.

oops! he ain't Frank Yankovic's son!

    by cyboman

I've been diving into Wierd Al research ever since reading this AICN item and posting the above message, and I have to say, I was wrong- 'Polka King' Frank Yancovic is NOT Al's dad! I've been thinking he was ever since the eighties...I don't know why, but I swear I heard it somewhere before. Turns out that a grade school music program offered either guitar or accordian lessons to seven year old Al, and his parents chose accordion. "Since Frankie Yankovic (no relation) was America's Polka King, my parents opted for accordion lessons, perhaps because they figured there should be at least one more accordion-playing Yankovic in the world."

Harry, my respect for you grows...Weird Al is probably one of the most underappreciated musicians out there today. His parody songs are just a small part of his musical genius. His original songs are comedic works of art, and there aren't many bands out there that work harder. I personally can't wait to see his Behind the Music special on VH1 this coming Sunday.
