Celebrities Telling You To NOT VOTE!!! F them Bitches! I'll Show Them!

Published at:  Oct 03, 2008 1:01:50 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Fucking Celebrities! Telling me not to vote, unless I care about some sort of issue... Who do they think they are? I'll show them, I'm going to vote - dispassionately. Yeah, I'll vote just cuz, why the fuck not? It certainly won't be because the world is on the brink seemingly. Who cares! I ain't hurting! I've got ALTERED STATES in HD and FORCED UNLEASHED on Wii! And a Cinnamon Roll Candle going. What could I possibly need? I just want that awesome "I VOTED" sticker - cuz that's the best status symbol I know! I remember at elementary school and dentist visits I got STICKERS - but as a grown up... it's the only thing I can think of that I get to do, that I get a sticker for!

    by steve young

All anyone is going to remember from this ad are the words, "Don't Vote" - repeated ad nauseum. The whole thing feels pretty condescending to me, and people who don't vote are going to walk away from it even more determined to stay out of the process.

As with any recent election, rock stars came out telling us who to vote for. Alice was quoted on this topic. I think his quote applies to celebrities, too..

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal." - Alice Cooper

    "Better the devil you know".

    by amy chasing

This phrase sums up how the Howard Liberal government stayed in power for 12 years in Australia. Simply put, their opposition was either crap or same-blokes-different-haircuts, or both. So we stuck with the devils we knew. For 12 years.

Now we have the Rudd Labour government. The devils we knew got so boring and out of touch the populace decided to give them the boot and try the untried. So we have new government, and what's changed? Said sorry to the Aboriginies. Our Prime Minister can speak fluent Mandarin. But otherwise the public health system is still suffering, teachers striking, workplace relations in turmoil. We can't even get decent broadband.

So I ask you citizens of the US: Which devil do you think you know better? Because either way, you're going to vote for one. Unless of course, you don't.

    by alice cooper stalker

No matter who get in there is not going to be a big change. Gas isn't going to go down to 1.25 a gallon, terrorists won't lay down their guns and start singing John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance, and Dogs and Cats won't start getting along just because a person of a different political party is in place. The only single person that can make positive change in your life is you...by getting an education, by getting a good job, by staying away from crack and gangs, by saving your money instead of spending it before you make it, by exercising and eating well, etc...etc. You have much better control over the quality of the life you live than Obama or McCain ever will.

Maybe you're joking but other parts of the world do have an interest in American politics. Like, countries you're either allied with in a war / may go to war with or countries whose financial systems are crumbling due to a world wide recession caused by selling off American housing market debts. So, it will be interesting to see how YOUR election turns out. Personally, it would be nice to see America return to being known as the most positive and friendly nation on earth, that has always been my experience of the U.S and it's people. Although it may have sounded that way in the end. No, it's just you have the democratic right not to, unlike in Australia's democracy where we get fined if we don't. So if you choose not to vote, you're exercising your democratic rights, which is what they're there for and no one should say you're "wrong" for making that legitimate choice. In fact to do so would be by definition: undemocratic. ;)

    by alucinor

The only reason all of these Liberal celebrities want people to vote so bad is because they know if someone watches a video and votes because celebrities said so, they will vote for Obama. Why don't they just come out and say vote for Obama instead of saying just go out and vote. They obviously think that voting for Mccain will doom us all so why all the bullshit? There is a reason you don't see Bruce Willis or Sylvester Stallone in any of those ads. How is being uninformed and voting better than not voting? Better to just brainwash the uninformed into voting for Obama right? There is no way a clueless person would be persuaded to vote for Mccain if all they listened to was popular culture. I think that's pretty sad.

You think 56% is bad turnout

    by tomdolan04

come to the UK, you'd be lucky if 56% could name the prime minister.

I think turnout for our last elections was hovering about 35%, and Gordon Brown wasn't voted in he merely succeeded Tony Blair as leader of the Labour Party. Whilst technically this is sound Brown was all set to hold an election early in his reign to serve as a reinforcement of his mandate - until a poll showed he would lose, at which point he delayed it until for a few years up to the legally required longest point.

Apathy is a dangerous regard, however there is a legitimate argument that it would make little difference which man in suit from Labour, The Conservatives or Lib Dems ran these small isles.

IDunno, Alucinor has some merit to his statement

by shut the fuck up donny

I think a lot of the 18-25 year olds they're trying to appeal to with this ad ARE more likely to be more immersed in pop-culture-laden media than straight news sources. When I was in college, people talked about the Daily Show, Family Guy, et al--not what was on Meet the Press.

So if you take those who are generally apathetic about voting, and persuade them to vote, the odds are good they're going to vote based on what they know about the issues based on this pop culture. And last time I checked, pop-culture doesn't tend to celebrate conservatism/republicans. Case in point, last week Family Guy wasted 3 minutes running a "Laura Bush killed a guy" gag into the ground. No joke, really, just Seth McFarland and Co. repeating it over and over just to let you know.

Now, do I think the ad is a little petty and insulting to a lot of people in that demographic that truly care about politics? Yes. But I don't think we should totally dismiss Alucinor's observations on the ad's method of attack.

Meanwhile Ohio is voting 37 days early and busing in truckloads of homeless men and degenerates, telling them to vote for the welfare candidate, and by the time my little electorally irrelevant state even opens up it's polls the election will be decided by media pundits and political operatives. Apathy is dangerous, but is actually a symptom of a seriously fucked democratic process. As someone above said, if you live in a state that is a foregone conclusion then there is no incentive to vote. Ideally, no state should be a foregone conclusion, but the sadly blind party allegiance means that it is. And if you are unlucky enough to live in a state that is overwhelmingly against you, then unlucky. The inexplicable popularity of Palin proves this- it doesn't matter how badly the Republicans have fucked the country, and how obviously inappropriate she is, you'll all turn out in droves to vote for them because that's your party. Sigh, it's the same everywhere. Tom, athough attendance in the UK was staggeringly low last time, I reckon it will be very high this time- too many people hate Nulabour.

Presidents are usually inbred, rich, stupid cocksuckers (and the two candidates now aren't any different). We've had bad presidents and good presidents. What matters is who you put in Congress. And, if you're gonna respond "we can't afford to assume," please kindly remove yourself from the gene pool. I'm not saying you have to die. Just try birth control or keep masturbating. And, Harry, you've said some stupid things through the years and I never called you out (this week) but wtf? "I just want that awesome 'I VOTED' sticker - cuz that's the best status symbol." It is? It means that even only for one day every (approximately) three years, people have to care about the political process. We don't need to be told to care, because if we stay home, a nice letter from the electoral commission arrives with a fine notice attached.

Really, that's how big a difference there is between the two parties. McCain & Obama both support the criminal bailout that just passed. McCain & Obama both believe in the "War on Terror"... the Federal Reserve system... big money election campaigns... negative campaign ads... and on and on. All the big issues - no difference. Minor, petty issues... faux debate. Wake up, people.

Remember how a couple months ago you guys were saying "We're not in a recession"... guess what assholes! We're now bordering on another Great Depression! And if you're going to say "We're not bordering on a Great Depression." Think about what you said about us being in a recession. You bring up an interesting point about the candidates not having our interests at heart. The thing is, those best suited for leadership are those who would never actively seek it. People want to be President because they want power, first and foremost. And I'm including both candidates in that. But Obama does seem to want to help people, and he does seem to want to restore our standing with the rest of the world. Will he succeed? I don't know, but I sure as hell know McCain won't.

Voting only matters in a few states

    by savage lucy

Unless you live in a swing state (Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Minnesota, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina) your vote doesn't mean shit. For instance, if you live in Utah and really think voting for Obama will help get him elected, you are a naive idiot. Utah never has, and never will (barring a mass suicide by the mormans) give their electoral votes to a democrat. This pisses me off. Fuck the electoral college Because it does not matter how many people turn out to vote in a given state, the Electoral College eliminates any advantage to a political party or campaign for encouraging voters to turn out (except in the swing states mentioned above). If the presidential election were decided by a national popular vote campaigns and parties would have a strong incentive to work to increase turnout everywhere. Individuals would similarly have a strong incentive to persuade their friends and neighbors to turn out to vote. The differences in turnout between swing states and non-swing states under the current electoral college system suggest that replacing the Electoral College with direct election by popular vote would likely increase turnout and participation very significantly.

    Palin IS the Anti-Christ

    by ninja nerd

...OK, that should get some idiots typing like mad. And just plain mad. Speaking of "PLAIN"; ever notice it's an anagram for PALIN? As in plain dumb? Seriously, neither party has presented a good candidate this cycle. McCain/Palin is the more frightening of the two. Obama/Biden won't bring about the Apocalypse because "it's the will of God", but Obama won't be very effective as President. He just doesn't have the power base to get things done. Biden helps that somewhat, but not enough. I don't think any of these folks are "bad", but I'm not real impressed with any of them, either. And no, Sarah Palin is NOT the Anti-Christ...but, as Governor of Alaska, she did negotiate a trade deal with Satan.

    A few points...

    by zerocorpse

    1. The need to not muck up the URL at the bottom of the screen with a watermark. Seriously, how fucking stupid is that? You make a video with a URL printed at the bottom, and then you imprint a fucking watermark over it so you can't read the URL? What are you? Stupid?
    2. You conservatives are right. This is totally an Obama-supporting ad. You really should spite these liberal celebrities by doing the opposite of what they say. If they say "Vote if you care about your country" you can just say, "Fuck you, celebrities! I'm NOT voting. So there!" -- Really. Stay home and watch John Wayne movies or something. That'll teach those libby celebrities that you don't let them tell you what to do!
    3. As usual, Sarah Silverman brings class to everything she does. (/sarcasm)
    4. According to fivethirtyeight, Florida and Ohio are currently blue. Missouri and North Carolina just turned white (evenly matched) for the first time a few days ago. McCain is boned, but only if people get off their asses and vote the Republican assholes out of the "fucking up the country" business.
    5. Liberals: Don't let the gnashing of teeth and loud whinging from the neocons on this board (or the rest of the Internet) discourage you; Let it embolden you. What you're witnessing is the death shriek of a party that has lost its way. Republicans are NOT conservatives anymore. Republican these days means fundamentalist religion, outdated morality laws, and handing the keys to the nation over to private corporations who call for bigger, less efficient government. All the true fiscal and social conservatives are either sitting this one out, voting for Barr, or switching sides and voting for Obama just to teach their former party a lesson about letting the fundies and CEOs take over and fuck things up. If you get out and vote, they'll lose and maybe the REAL conservatives will grow some balls and take back their party; That would be in the best interest for all of us.
    6. Neocons: You're fucked. The pendulum has swung the other way, and your bellicose, greedy, idiotic way of doing things will soon be a bad memory. I sincerely hope true conservatives come back and kick your asses out of the Republican party. I respected those guys, but you Neocon shitheads? Not so much.

    by toonol

if you're not passionate or educated on the candidates and issues. A vote cast in ignorance is irresponsible, not a virtue.
I'm trying to get an idea circulating: All ballots should have no mention of political party on them. You wouldn't be able to do a straight party vote; you would have to actually know the names of the candidates you're voting for.

Jeez. The cynicism on here is astounding sometimes. My response is to register, yes. And go vote, yes. But my bigger response is to do a little research. Get informed. Learn something. There is more on the ballot than just the Presidential election. Even if you think that Obama/McCain doesn't make a bit of difference, you can leave that part of your ballot blank. Take a look at your congressional races. Take a look at whatever propositions are on your state's ballot. Because I guarantee if you pay just a little attention, you'll find some issue or some candidate that is relevant to YOU.Is the system perfect? Does your vote solve all ills? No. Democracy is a poor form of government; it's just all the others are so much worse. But you can make some measure of difference. Cast some influence. Show you give a fuck about not only yourself but your fellow human beings.I'm done.

How do people think this should be run? At least 4 times in the past the winner of the popular vote didn't win the election. John Quincy Adams, Hayes, Harrison, and "W" didn't win the popular vote. I'm also willing to go out on a limb and say Kennedy might not have either. That not only negates the "just a popularity contest" argument, it kinda makes one wonder why doesn't the most popular candidate win? Whats wrong with being popular, anyway?

    Celebrity cult

    by spiketbb

Reminds of that '80's hit by Living Color, "The Cult of Personality"
"I exploit you, still you love me. I tell you one and one makes three.
I'm every person you need to be.”
It's funny to watch it with the sounds muted and see how they all ape the same emphatic, intense gestures. You know that condescending head shake people use when they think you are too stupid to understand? Sarah Silverman gives a good example, but a lot of them use it in this. Also the dismissive two handed karate chop "case closed" gesture. Third most frequent seems to be the "how stupid are you?" shrug. The body language seems very hostile and condescending.
Could be the best sort of response to this type of manipulation is to laugh at it, then forget it and do what you were going to do in the first place.
