TRON 2 Is Crewing Up!
Beaks here...
Last week, Disney informed us that TRON 2 (or TR2N) is indeed heading into production. While this was reassuring after the maybe/maybe not announcement at Comic Con (that eye-popping teaser was essentially test footage), the lack of specificity (aside from director Joseph Kosinski and writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis) bothered me. If this is really happening, shouldn't there be some additional talent already attached?
Well, there is. And it's some seriously talented talent. Tonight, WATCHMEN and 300 costume designer Michael Wilkinson confirmed to me that TR2N is his next project (after TERMINATOR SALVATION). He couldn't offer up any precise detail on what he'll do with those iconic outfits, but it's comforting to know that he's approaching the film as a fan of the original. (He seemed impressed that I own a "Flynn's" t-shirt. Impressed or quietly sickened. Hard to tell when you barely know someone.)
Hopefully, we'll have more names to pass along over the next few weeks. We'll certainly have more on WB's WATCHMEN presentation, which was very, very convincing. That six-minute opening credit sequence scored to Bob Dylan's original recording of "The Times They Are a-Changin'" is one for the pantheon. I do believe Zack Snyder's got the goods, folks.

Just don't call it TR2N. FUCKING RETARDED. oh, and Disney, make sure it doesn't suck.
-
yes, i am pretentious.
-
want to see the dude in this
-
Tron is not one of them. Tron is a wonderful concept and a great piece of visual candy. I think that TR2N would do well to be like Speed Racer.. pure 'never-seen- before' eye candy.

the original is not on a pedestal like star wars, or raiders of the lost ark; so i hope they have fun with this. I'll be there.
-
zack snyder?
-
Or is it F5fth?
-
End of line.
-
I liked the promo they did for comic con. Hope this is good.
-
harry was going to have a conversation with the director of the original TRON. Did that never happen?
-
So Mr. Beaks, does the Comic-Con trailer have anything to do with TR2N? Will there be an evil Flynn? Fingers crossed!! BTW, good salutation.
-
that is all. oh and net neutrality for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After all the crap that's been floating around about this movie.
by googamooga
I thought it had already been made.
-
I loved the original as a kid and I kinda love that Disney is doing this. It's nice to see them involved in something that isn't pure animation or Ice Princess. If this means Disney is going in more daring directions it's good news for all of us.
-
I have total faith that this will kick much ass and just as awesome as the first movie.
-
Now about that black hole remake well I HOPE
-
I wish I knew what happened with the Steve Lisberger interview Harry said was going to happen on a weekend.
-
When you say "FTW" are you trying to say "For The Record"? Because that would be "FTR". If I'm not getting it, I'm sure you will let me know. As for 2TR2N2 or whatever they decide to put on the poster, they should definitely go with the alluded to plot that the test footage showed. And get BB for it.
-
DIGITAL IMAX 3D....
-
I DOUBLE DARE YOU MUTHAFUCKAS!!! Don't! Fuck! This! Up!
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........
-
I mean a Tron movie without Tron and Flynn would be meaningless.
-
they got Bridges to return for test footage?
-
Never bothered to see it as a kid because it looked to hokey and pretentious(I was one of those "who was Mrs. Cain?" types who got beat up for blowing the bell curve and not the gym teacher in my little redneck mountain town). It being a Disney film didn't and still doesn't help. Why should I support a company that made billions raping the public domain and is now trying to legislate public domain out of existence to protect Mickey Mouse?
-
fuckin'a
-
Well I hope so, we'll find out in March. Based on 300 I'd say he didn't have the goods. We'll see.
-
... okay, Che, siddown. Yeah, yeah, the evil Empire of the Rat. Duly noted. TRON's an okay SF riff on WIZARD OF OZ that worked as a theatrical experience because it was so visually arresting, particularly on a 70MM screen like the one near my house in Chattanooga. It's a reeeeeeeeally languid movie, all things considered, and I watched it put an entire crowd into a state of deeeeeeeep hypnosis at 3:00 in the morning at BNAT one year. But it's groovy, and if the right people do this film the right way, it could be a lot of fun.
-
but he owns a Flynn's T-Shirt? Ugh, 2012 can't get here soon enough.

According to an interview he did for the Guardian last week....

I don't know what I was doing in 1982. I've seen thousands of movies, I'm a huge movie geek and I've never seen this and I only saw ET on video once like 10 years ago. But if the Dude's in it, I'll check out the sequel.
-
you know, like in sports... " and the kick is good! It's Johnson for the win!"
-
I think Tron needs to be approached with *more* reverence, simply because the other two series you mention didn't and you are getting into hardcore geek territory now... if Tron 2 isn't faithful, and a step UP in story quality, it will utterly bomb and be rejected by both the geek audience and hte mainstream. However, if they hit a home run the geek audience will carry the movie themselves and drag mainstream audiences to see it.

"Doing the new Tron movie is something that is just too good to pass up." "Is that why you signed up for the new Tron movie? Yeah, that's another unique, wild experience that was too good to turn down. Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting. Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that. There's such a retro love for Tron. How do you bring it up to date? Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron." (From the Guardian article as mentioned by jpdisco)

I like that. Say it in an Elmer Fudd or Barbara Walters voice for maximum amusement.
-
I was prepared for news like "Zack Snyder set to direct, Colin Farrell and Jude Law will star."

Bridges and Boxleitner are essential? Whatever. DAVID WARNER!
by Shut the Fuck up Donny
That man is God to me. He totally needs to be working more.
-
Suckas they be sayin' they can take out Adam Horowitz.
-
The CG was so well done and so INTRINSIC and APPROPRIATE to the story that it'll be fun to see what they do with the new toys in the sandbox this time around. Hell, I think they should do it in 3D too. Why not take the volume up to eleven and just have a lot of fun with it.
-
Now that's nerdy on top of geeky.
-
Then all the morons who buy tickets to it can sound like Elmer Fudd.
-
That also accepts apostrophes that roam around and appear where not needed, internet speak lolz, txt messaging shortcuts, bad US spellings in countries that aren't the US (fucking color!), and any number of other laziness. It's just real life, after all. There was no golden age, people have always come up with shit like that.
-
Don't scare Orcus like that
-
And I was hoping for a trailer.
-
Not only do you need to bring back Warner, but make his character a good guy - or at least an anti-hero to root for. Think about how much fun *that* would be.
-
Make it a revenge flick. Warner is incredible. Anyone ever see among his other great movies Time After Time?
-
...is the use of his voice for any MCP lines. Sark is dead, and would have been purged from the system when the MCP went down. Yes, there could be backups...but he'd be more like Dumont than anything else if portrayed like Flynn is...older. Maybe they'll do to Sark like it appears they did to Clu...?

Here is a link in case anyone hasn't seen it http://teaser-trailer.com/2008/07/tr2n-trailer-tron-2-better-version.html

Beaks is clearly the most knowledgeable guy here (followed closely by Moriarty and Massawyrm), and if he thinks Snyder's got it, thats a huge endorsement for me. P.S. I don't want to disparage Quint, Capone, or Harry, I love their reviews just the same, but they represent the "normal guy", where Beaks and Mori feel like industry guys. Massawyrm is just a lunatic.

No Squid, No Peace!

Know Squid, Know Peace.

Much better name.
-
But still, in the context of what was written,For The Record makes more sense than For The Win. I'm just tryin' ta' communicate.

Is my new vote for movie title.

Really, the best way to name the sequel is thus:

-
That would rule to see a fat dude in Tron.
-
Yes, Sark is dead. But, like the Boxleitner and Bridges roles, he was both in the real world, and in the cyberworld. Remember he stole all of Flynn's games, and gained control of the company. Make him return in human form. Besides, he could always be Sark 2.0
-
Da Doo Tron Tron by the Rolling Stones!
-
Because Tron was all about the technology, and the tech has moved so much in 20+ years. Most reimaginings are all about prettier, younger faces and bigger FX. For this, the FX is organic to the concept. But, yes, be respectful to it and keep the distinctive look, as much as possible. The original actors could participate as live action or voices, too. I hope this comes out well.
-
I didn't read Gungan Slayer's comments right... he really did need to say "for the record" or something like that FTW doesn't make any sense. ( Maybe *he* didn't know what it means! )
-
Interesting! So Disney actually DO films out of teaser trailers?
-
Now THAT'S what the title should be...
-
There are too many "far too late" sequels that have irked me (Episode I and Indy4 I'm looking at you.) The trailer was kick-@$$, so for the love of GOD... Please don't screw up TR2N!!!!!!
-
YES!
-
I think she's auditioning for a part in TR2N. Check it out. Mind the spaces.
http://movies.msn.com/celebs/gallery.aspx/?gallery=18833&photo=973572

just before Internet bust. That would actually make it quite timely.
