Herc’s Seen The First New PUSHING DAISIES Since 2007!!

Published at:  Oct 01, 2008 3:58:04 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

What’s it called?
“Bzzzzzzz!”

Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to series creator/mastermind Bryan Fuller (who previously created “Dead Like Me” and “Wonderfalls”).

What says ABC?
“Chuck goes undercover as a ‘Bee Girl’ at a honey-based cosmetics company after their new spokesmodel (guest star Autumn Reeser) is stung to death. She soon discovers that office politics are killer (literally) between the founder (guest star Missi Pyle as Betty Bee) and the new owner (guest star French Stewart as Woolsey Nicholls). Meanwhile, Ned can't stand her growing independence or the fact that she wants to move out of his apartment. In other developments, Lily spirits Olive off to a nunnery so she won't spill Lily's deep, dark secret, on the Second-Season premiere of ABC's critically-acclaimed ‘Pushing Daisies’ nominated for 12 Emmy Awards.

“Guest starring in "Bzzzzzzzzz!" are Field Cate as Young Ned, Sammi Hanratty as Young Chuck, Sy Richardson as the coroner, Diana Scarwid as the Mother Superior, Peter Cambor as Dusty Fitz, Autumn Reeser as Kentucky Fitz, Missi Pyle as Betty Bee, Robin Gwynne as the customer and French Stewart as Woolsey Nicholls.”

Does Barry Sonnenfeld direct this week’s installment?
Another cinematographer-turned-director, Adam Kane (season one’s “Pigeon”), helms the opener, though Sonnenfeld is expected back this season.

What’s this about Olive knowing Lily’s “deep, dark secret”?
In what turned out to be the first-season finale, Aunt Lily (Swoosie Kurtz), having accidentally ingested an improbable quantity of anti-depressants, confided to Olive (and Olive alone) that Chuck is her biological daughter. (The reason Lily thinks of spiriting Olive to a nunnery is the nunnery is what harbored Lily as her stomach swelled a quarter-century earlier.

The big news?
Olive’s stay at the nunnery will extend well beyond tonight’s installment.

What else is ABC not telling us?
Though Fuller’s name isn’t on its teleplay, next week’s installment is arguably even funnier than this week’s.

What’s doing with the series’ best character, avaricious private detective Emerson Cod?
He continues to demonstrate his fondness for pop-up literature. And viewers will get a sense that his estranged daughter will be turning up early in the season.

Didn’t Diana Scarwid play Jaye’s mom on “Wonderfalls”?
She did.

Is Missi Pyle the hot shapeshifter from “Heroes”?
That’s Missy Peregrym. Missi Pyle is the hot alien from “Galaxy Quest.”

Why does “Autumn Reeser” ring a bell?
She played Taylor Townsend on 31 episodes of “The O.C.”

What’s great?
The hilariously abrupt arrival (and departure) of The Poor. Chuck’s spinning stool. The cornered Olive. Ned’s approach to waterbug control. The gingerly manner with which Cod unveils his ancient carbon-receipt credit-card device. The working lamp in the pop-up book. The coroner’s (knowing?) crack about talking to the corpses. “But it also speaks to the efficiency of your human resources department.” “You know, somehow a crazy cat lady don’t seem so crazy no more.”

What’s not so great?
This week’s dose of exposition can get dizzying.

How does it end, spoiler-boy?
Finished with his pie, the man dons his hat.

8 p.m. Wednesday. ABC.

    by shirtlesshostage

This might be my most highly anticipated season premiere. The writer's strike and then ABC's refusal to re-air the show during the hiatus has put me in serious Pushing Daisies withdrawal. There's nothing else quite like it on television.

also, am I the only one that doesn't mind the sense of whimsy this show has, and sees it as one of its strengths?

whimsy a strength and a weakness

    by newc0253

obviously i like the whimsy, or i wouldn't like Pushing Daisies. i also hope the show never stops being whimsical, or it would lose an intrinsic aspect of its character.

but i also agree that, by itself, whimsy for its own sake can be irritating: schtick like "Five years, two months, seventeen days, ten hours, six minutes and seven seconds" can get old fast. that's why i said the show needs to evolve over time (e.g. maybe exploring why the pie-maker has the particular power he has), because the show has greater potential than just being a chirpy version of CSI: Pie-Town.

Think of it in terms like this: An origin story is a lot like religion. Oh sure it claims to have all the answers you seek, but the more you really look into it, the more it starts to unravel. And I have to agree with bacci40... as nuts as it might make us, shows always seem to go downhill once they've had their entire mystery "explained". As for the rules for the pie-maker's ability... all I can say is this... We know what the rules are. Do we really need to know why those are the rules? I mean... the first season was only 9 episodes long. At least give it a chance to grow before it shoots itself in the foot.

Bones, Criminal Minds and Lipstick Jungle, because that simplifies setting the VCR to tape the entire ABC line-up - the season premieres of Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money.and if I had a DVR I'd also record the Breaking Bad marathon on AMC. Or watch the Twilight Zone marathon on The X or the Boston Legal season one double feature on ION TV.And that's why Knight Rider and Gary Unmarried don't stand a chance of lasting 13 episodes.

    The Rules

    by napoleon park

When Ned touches a dead person, animal or plant it returns to life. When he touches then a second time they die. And if he doesn't touch someone he's revived within sixty seconds, someone else dies. that's how he inadvertently killed chuck's dad while reviving his own mom. And that's why he can never physically contact either Chuck or his dog. Those are the rules. While I'm enjoying the Daisies love-fest here, I'm waiting for the Heroes haters to pour in whining "everyone who dies on this show comes back to life!"They should have Jon Stewart guest as someone who also has the same power as Ned. They could call the episode "The Daisy Show". What, too lame?I don't have a nun's habit fetish, so i hope they don't leave Olive Snook in the nunnery too long.

    by napoleon park

Relax, I'm kidding.I did read an article with the DSM creators discussing how they plan to fine tune the show's feel and lighten it's mood a little. someone yelled out "And this year i can raise the dead."The point being, sarcastic or not, they were acknowledging Pushing Daisies as a more popular and successful show. And seriously, anyone who isn't loving the Dr. Seuss style whimsy on Pushing Daisies really ought to change the channel instead of griping about hoping they change the show the rest of us love the way it is. I think there are dozens of Tv shows considerably less whimsiical than PD that you might enjoy. I hear that "24" is hardly whimsical at all.

    by newc0253

wait, who said i hate the implementation?

is it the same guy who said i was demanding an origin story (something else i never said)?

all i said was that the show's whimsy wouldn't be enough to carry it long-term & that it would need to evolve at some point. yes, the show's universe is interesting, that's kinda *why* i'm curious to know more about it. i'm not saying that we *need* an explanation for the pie-maker's power, but i don't see why it'd be so objectionable to find out more about the show's internal logic.

but apparently wanting to know more makes me a hater. apparently i should just stick my head in the sand or something. seriously, i really like Pushing Daisies but some of you folk here are huffing the fumes.

Melvin_Pelvis said he liked the premise but hated the implementation. And no, wanting to know more doesn't make you a hater. Since the religion simile didn't go over well, think of it like a magic trick: When you don't know how it works, it holds a certain charm to it. Once the method behind the trick has been revealed... it's kinda lame. But of course, I'm sure a lot of people on this talkback have already matured to the point where all magic is lame (I blame David Blaine).

I hope we get to see other crossover locations (and people!) from Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me. Der Waffle Haus would fit right in. At least it looks like Diana Scarwid will be sticking around a little longer, so huzzah for that.
And if Kristin Chenoweth had had this episode to submit for the Emmys, she probably would have won. Olive just gets better and better. She's now without a doubt my favorite character on the whole show. Her confession about submitting a police report for her possessions, along with the "cabbage patch" line, made me laugh out loud. Missi Pyle was also great tonight. So glad this show is back.

    This is a perfect example

    by veritasses

of a show with talented craftsmen in all departments, all working to realize a singular, specific vision. It's a remarkable job. It's the type of unified focus I wish a show like Fringe would emulate. Having said that, I do think PD suffers a bit because what it strives to be is too big for the medium of network TV and I think this is one possible reason why - despite all the quality (and often detailed/subtle) work - the show can't quite make more "must see" lists and gain wider acceptance. It's sort of like the world's greatest conductor conducting the world's greatest orchestra playing the greatest works of classical music... in an elementary school gymnasium. You can see and hear greatness but what they're offering can never be fully realized in that type of venue. So while you might be content with the concert, you won't be awed the way you should be and your opinion of the orchestra won't be even close to where it would be if you had instead heard them in Carnegie Hall. An elementary school gymnasium is perfect for listening to elementary school musicians not a world class concert. The image Daisies projects is so strong and compelling that it makes me wish that the stories were a tad grander, that there were more time and money to setup a few more shots and tweak the lighting, that they created more shots with richer sfx to magnify the sense of wonder, that it were filmed in IMAX, that they did a few more takes to make a particular shot just right etc. As it stands, as good as things are, I'm somewhat left with a slight feeling that it doesn't quite hit the spot, like the orchestra in the gymnasium. This is a minor quibble though.

i dashed off a few comments on the six shows I watched tonight for the Jump the Shark yahoo group. Wasn't Chuck mad at Ned at the end of the first season? That plot went away... I guess she had plenty of time to forgive him during the strike and the long hiatus. Here's my "review" from JYS:The most whimsical show on television debuts - gets a fresh start - with some major plot developments continued from the short first season and all the familiar colorful and eccentric characters plus very cool guests Missi Pyle and French Stewart. The one plot they seem to have dropped or brushed aside, though, was last seasons cliffhanges about Chuck discovering how Ned was to inadvertantly blame for her fathers death. The opening narration makes it clear that it was accidental and Ned didn't know how his gift worked at that time. (he can raise the dead with a touch, kill them with a second touch, but he the revived person isn't re-deadened within a minute, someone else dies.)It's reasonable that Chuck would realize it wasn't Ned's fault eventually and forgive him, but the previous season finale seemed to suggest that that might take some time. Apparently that time occured during the lengthy hiatus.I'm not sure a person stung to death by bees would continue to swell up and develop welts or pustules or whatever those lumpy bee-stings are called. But I do know that this is NOT a show you watch expecting clinical forensic accuracy.

Watched the pilot then gave up

Although I can see where the show has it's fans. For me, the overload of...whimsy...was trite and forced, none of it felt natural at all, every moment came across as "aren't we the most darling show" to the point of being insufferable. It was a visual treat to a degree as well, but there again, too much time was spent on visual flair for the sake of flair to the point of distraction. Maybe the worst element was the now-in-vogue voice over...it's not as horrid as the voice over on Grey's Anatomy, or the "if you're too stupid to pick up on the themes then lets' spell them out" voice over on Desperate Housewives, but it was cute to the point of annoying.

I feel sorry for the folks that don't like this show...they're missing out on something wonderful. For me, this show is like PeeWee's Playhouse, several Dr. Seuss books, and a decent acid trip all rolled into one.

This show is to Tim Burton like for me

    by greatczarsghost

I like quirky things but Pushing is just boring. The talking to dead people is already getting old as is the (Catholic based) you can't have what you want most in life because only in heaven can you finally get it/her. I'm not watching this season.

thank the gods for the Daisies

    by oisin5199

That was a long hiatus. I'd forgotten what it was like to watch an hour long show with a smile on my face the whole time. So great when the rest of the shows out there are so relentlessly bleak. I just love this show. From the very beginning with bringing the bees back to life, such a great moment. I couldn't crush on both Chuck and Olive any more. Loved that Diana Scarwid made an appearance. I keep hoping for the rest of the Wonderfalls cast, at least Bill Sadler, the sister (forgot her name) and Jaye, of course. If not the actual characters, then the actors. I've never liked French Stewart, but he was made for this show. Can't wait for more.

    Really strong narrative

    by buffywrestling

Each episode feels like a fable storybook (A pop-book, perhaps?). Just everything - the voice over, the tone, the set design - screams storybook. It's really a different treat from stories that are like thiller/mystery novels or never ending epics (I'm not knocking either; I have favorites of every kind). But sometimes a simple storybook is refreshing - a head clearer.

Actually, I think Pushing Daisies has a lot in common with the piggy movie "Babe" and/or "Babe: Pig in the City".

Yeah, there WAS a lot of exposition wasn't there?

    by drath

Does anyone know if casual viewers can follow anything even with all the expository interludes? Cause it's only gonna get worse with all these wonderful plot twists. At times the voice over must sound likes its talking down to all the late-comers, and geesh it sure does eat up screen time leaving much of the rest of the show chugging at a manic pace to make up for the lost time. I guess I'd rather lose 10 minutes to constant recaps rather than see the show cancelled, but still, I hope they're letting Jim Daily catch his breath.

    Exposition

    by billypilgrimisunstuck

The first 2-3 minutes was bugging the shit out of me. I'm sure it was at the behest of ABC to make sure people who are just tuning in can enjoy it as well, but wow..that was just TOO long. But then I forgave them because the scene immediately after had Chuck in silk.

    A question regarding Chuck's parentage:

    by big jim

Her father was her father. Her aunt is her mother. Her mother/aunt's sister was engaged to her father. So exactly how are Chuck's aunts her aunts? I assume her aunts are not her father's sisters. She was told her mother died in childbirth. If Chuck's mother never really existed then who are these women who, I assume, Chuck has believed to be her mother's sisters? Or did I miss something?

for decades. You're too young for the old folks complaints.I'd say the music is "sprightly" and upbeat and certainly adds to the
shows mood without entirely overwhelming it.But if it's a problem for you, well, you know, Bones and Knight Rider and Christine/Gary and whatever's on PBS and cable.Or you can always read to the kids. Heh, try to get them to sit still for that.Although I will admit, just this morning I was thinking that Pushing Daisies does feel a bit like they took the opening credit sequence from Desperate Housewives - the theme song and the brightly colored art history animation - and stretched it out into an hour long. So you may have a point.

    Brillant Show

    by _maltheus_

It's like Hudsucker Proxy meets Amelie meets Tim Burton, but better than all of that. I don't care so much for the stories, but I love the look, dialog and characters. This and Dexter are my two favorite shows these days.
But it doesn't inspire me with confidence that Knight Rider scored better. I don't know how anyone could make it past that first episode. It's easily the worst new show I've ever seen. People in this country have no taste. A bunch of filthy savages we are.
