FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Moves To DirecTV Tonight!!

Published at:  Oct 01, 2008 12:18:39 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The 13-episode third-season of Austin-shot “Friday Night Lights” launches on DirecTV’s Channel 101 tonight, then repeats on NBC starting in January. But the DirecTV episodes will run without commercials and NBC intends to run shorter versions.

Entertainment Weekly’s Mike Ausiello has long had the scoop on what’s ahead. To recap:

* Season three picks up eight months later as the new school year is starting.

* Tyra Collette has dumped Landry Clarke again, even though Landry dumped the cute little nerd girl (now off playing Hiro’s superspeedy nemesis on “Heroes”) for her.

* Tyra will be pursued by Tim Riggins’ rodeo star pal.

* Bad boy Tim and Jesus-happy Lyla Garrity are now secretly boyfriend-girlfriend.

* Tami Taylor will become her husband’s boss as the new principal of Dillon High.

* Tim, Lyla, Matt and Tyra are all seniors now, and it sounds like most if not all of them will be off the show if it goes to season four. New characters are being introduced, perhaps as possible replacements, including a freshman who early this season challenges Matt for the role of QB1.

* Matt and Julie remain friendly despite their breakup.

* As previously reported, Dillion grads Smash Williams and Jason Street are leaving the series early this season, but either or both may return at some point.

* No word on what's ahead for Coach Taylor. Presumably he'll continue yelling at everybody to make them better players.

Never watched the show but love the "Devil Town" song in the promos.
Anyone know where to get it or who sings it?

Definitely worth watching. I think Herc would agree with me that it was one of the better dramas in its first season. Last season had some questionable story lines but this seasons sounds like it will be back on track again. If you end up liking it the DVDs of the first two seasons can be found for rather cheap at Amazon.

    Bittorrent anyone?

    by seanny_d

I'm wondering how this experiment is going to end up playing out. Personally, I don't have DirecTV (and if I didn't get such a deal from the local cable company, I'd have it almost exclusively for this show) and there's no way that I'm going to wait until January to watch the episodes, so I will probably be downloading them to watch immediately. ESPECIALLY if shortened versions will be appearing on NBC. I love this show. It's easily one of my favorites.

    by whysoserious

The show is GREAT and on DTV101, it'll be even better. However, this day-and-age, i torrent all my shows....i don't have time to plan things around a t.v. schedule.

"Devil Town" is by Tony Lucca

    by freakemovie

At least the version that appeared in the show.Terrific show that should've had better ratings and more discerning Season 2 plotlines. Season 1 is a near-masterpiece. Hopefully I can avoid spoilers until NBC airs the 3rd.

No Lyla and Tyra after this season?

    I really don't think that's a good move.

    Terrific Show

    by spawnofachilles

I love FNL, it's one of the best network dramas (and shows in general) that I've ever seen. Riggins will never graduate and if he does he won't go to college, so he better be around for years to come! And since Lyla is his little dime piece keep her coming too yum

    amazing show

    by clarkk82

I'll admit that last season wasn't as good as the first but it was still amazing. The killer "lance" storyline felt out of place but the acting was great and it helped move an almost unbelievable romance along nicely. I loved the character work with Matt and his sense of abandonment as well. I was pretty surprised to find out that everyone we thought was a senior in season 1 was a junior except for Street. Overall it is far above most shows on tv today.

    Battlestar Galactica

    by johnnysunshine

I'm thankful for DirectTV for coming in and making a third season possible, but I doubt many of us are going to sign up for it just to get one show. Remember when the first season of Battlestar Galactica aired overseas months before in America and SciFi was getting mad because everyone here was getting it off BitTorrents? I hope FNL finds the audience it deserves on NBC this year, but I don't see many fans being able to wait until January.

Oh, Devil Town is originally a Daniel Johnston song, but they use a cover in the promos.

    "It's not a sports show"

    by napoleon park

Seriously, that's the best thing anyone ever has to say about this turkey, "it's not a show about high school football."Dirty Sexy Money, Private Practice, Gary Unmarried all debut and Knight Rider second episode tonight, and some show that isn't about the only thing it's about gets a talkback?I've never seen it, I was just wondering what it's like to do what all the AICN haters do and bad mouth shows I don't watch. It actually feels about as stupid as I always thought it was.

    Excellent show

    by my pretty pony

I gave it a chance last season, watched one episode, and immediately understood why this show was so critically acclaimed. I bought the Season 1 DVD set and got absolutely hooked. Great acting, interesting characters, it's well-written, compelling, and has a very realistic feel to it. I'm not into football at all, but I found myself getting into the game scenes as if they were real football games because the show is just that good. It's true that Season 2 wasn't quite as good as Season 1, but the 1st season was so close to perfection, they had to have some kind of sophomore slump. Not to mention, we only got half a season because of the strike. I still enjoyed the 2nd season tremendously, though, and I can't wait to watch Season 3. I don't have Direct TV, either, so I really wish they could've found a way to bring the show back w/o sharing it with Direct TV. At least I'll have it to look forward to in January. I hope they'll put those extended Direct TV episodes on DVD, and not just the downsized NBC versions.

way to call a great show (which you have never seen by your own admission) that everyone on this talkback has praised up and down while at the same time crying about lack of coverage for Knight Rider (which is shit and has been covered at length on the site anyway... plus I had the Michael Knight car you could ride around in when I was a kid AND I have the shelby cobra that they bastardized for the show, it hurts me right in the heart how bad it is.)
you also don't seem to realize that saying the show is not about football is a compliment because a lot of people on this site probably don't care for football (I personally love the sport) so people say that to get those close minded individuals to give it a shot. The show is not about football, it's about interesting chracters and relationships in a town where the only thing most people care about is football.
